This is a functional, low power (3X or so) telescope, but is really more a novelty or display item. It seems to be fairly well built, with clear, undistorted optical quality. The main tube is covered with real black leather overstitched with a a cross stitch. The wooden box is nicely fitted and solid, lined with a blue velvet material with some brass inlays/appliques. The item I received had some small stubborn black tarnish stains on one of the brass tubes. The brass inlays on the box were very tarnished and seemed to be coated with brown stain or paint. I scrubbed and polished the brass and the item is presentable.

Buy 10" Handheld Brass Telescope w/ Wooden Box - Pirate Collection
I was at first disappointed with this telescope, but then a co-worker, an ex-marine, showed me how I could focus by changing the length of the tube: I extend the tube all the way out, then kind of work it down a little until it's in focus. My co-worker unscrewed the different parts and showed me how it worked, and told me it was actually a pretty good quality little telescope! SO glad I talked to him, because I was just seeing a lot of fuzz, and couldn't focus, but now I can actually use it! Getting two for my nephew and niece for Christmas.

Reviews of Quivering Crazy Solar Powered Bug Grasshopper toy
I bought this for my daughter and my dog boomer. It turned out that boomer loves more than my daughter. Who knew?
For the price, I think the item is awesome. It is amazing how it works. I surely taught my daughter how solar energy works. I also learned that solar power is stronger than I thought before.
I have been using it for a while now and it has been working great. I think the quality of the item is great.
I am buying 5 more to make a crazy town of grasshoppers. It will be fun seeing multiple grasshoppers shaking.

Reviews of Dandelion Organic Toy Crinkle Book
This toy was an immediate hit with my 3-month old baby. She loves the crinkle noise it makes when she squishes it. It is hard to find natural and organic sound and effect toys. This is a good affordable option for an infant. It washes and drys well -a must since baby will chew on it. Still a favorite at 5 months.

This toy is ok...it does make the nice crinkly noise as advertised, but as far as being a "book" and teaching letters and numbers...It has One Apple on the first "page", two birds on the second, and three cat heads on the third page (the name of each item drawn starts with the first three letters of the alphabet: an apple starts with an a, birds starts with a b, and cats starts with a c) and that's it...there are no actual numbers or letters on the toy. The pictures are sewn in light colors as you see on the front with the apple. As it is hard to tell from picture, the colored appendages you see on the sides are not hooks, rather they are simply little flat tags (two layers sewn together--not thick). This is not an educational toy (beyond simple motor skills, color contrasts maybe), but does pass as a regular organic crinkle toy, if you want to pay that much for one. On the plus side, the white cloth is very soft (the tags on the sides are a bit rougher material).Best Deals for Dandelion Organic Toy Crinkle Book
My son enjoys this little toy, and it happened to be one of his first toys. It is sweet and pleasant looking but after a certain point there is nothing too visually stimulating about it. A different texture or textile inside the pear would have added some interest but at 9 months, my baby could care less about this. The pictures really aren't interesting enough to give a second thought to. The quality is very good and the fabric is soft and you can feel good that it is natural. I think the best age for this toy would be for 3-6 months. But there are certainly cheaper options available.Honest reviews on Dandelion Organic Toy Crinkle Book
You HAVE TO GET THIS crinkle book! I have now bought two because my baby started teething at 3 months and is now 10 months and has totally worn out the knots on this thing! First of all he loves the crinkle sound and mostly he can't get enough of the knots! I have to keep washing it so he has it available for those tough days and it's holding up really well except for the knots, those have gone pretty much bald, lol....either way I bought the first one when he was about 3 months and the second one recently so it has lasted a while. This way he can have one available while the other is in the wash. I feel completely comfortable letting baby chew away on these knowing they're completely safe for my baby. I will be buying these as gifts for all my new mommy friends!Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Dandelion Organic Toy Crinkle Book
I'm always looking for the perfect toxic free toy for my six months old baby. After getting this toy I got buyers remorse for how expensive it is, for what it is. The toy is non toxic, however, it's so boring! My baby took a look at it play with it for one minute and that's it! I tried to entice her with the crinkly noise she seems to like so much, but no, she is not interested. I gave 3 starts for the fact that this is a very green toy, I hope my baby will come around and like it one good day.Buy Spiralin' Seas Waterpark
This is perfect for my twin granddaughters who are 15 months old. They are just the right height to stand and splash in the water. They have also figured out how to put the balls in the center spiral and watch them come out at the bottom. Then they learned to turn the crank and spin the wheel. This would be a good gift for any toddler. It was easy to put together too.

My Kids love this toy! My son got it for his 1st Birthday (now 3) and all my kids have enjoyed it (6yoB, 3yoB and 1yoG). The kids have a lot of fun and its at the perfect height for 1-3 yo but even my 6yo loves to play in it. I know its 2 years old but Im a little sad that the sun has done its fair share of damage. The colors have faded, and most of the attachments have broke off due to the frailness. The center swirl thing and the Ferris Wheel thing are the only thing still intact on mine and I even managed to break the swirl thing the other day trying to dump it out to clean it... (totally my fault) :( The legs tend to come off fairly easy too. You want to put it exactly where you want it, cause theres no dragging it or picking it up to move it, the legs fall off and then someone has to be standing there to get them back on... over all though, its a GREAT toy. I recommend putting it away when not in use (shed) to keep down the sun damage! Id recommend it to any parent!Best Deals for Spiralin' Seas Waterpark

Quick to put it together and my daughter loves it (at least for a few minutes). A little difficult to take the legs back out but not that big of a deal.Friday, September 26, 2014
15" Handheld Pirate Telescope with Wooden Box - Nautical Antique Reviews
After I received this telescope I used Brasso to clean it up. Looks unbelievable. Other students at my Sailboat class could not believe how much I paid for it. Looks much more expense.
I was very pleased with the look, feel and functionality of the item. My adult sister even thought perhaps it had been in our family!
One thing keeps it from being a 5-star item. While the case (which can be worn bandolier style) is great for a kid on the hunt, the one I received smelled badly. Imagine a wet dog laying on leather for some time. My sister was going to soak it, but I've not heard back as to whether it worked. That aside, for the price, this is a terrific deal.

My 3 yr old daughter definitely likes this. It is well made and stores well on a shelf. It would have been great to have a top lid of some kind too. I would certainly recommend it.
-made of wood not plastic
-educational but fun
-has specific angled cuts so that only the right pieces will fit together
-the box lid doesn't bother me as it did another reviewer
My 14 month son will grow into this. This is much better than their alphabet puzzle which I just received, which is tiny by comparison. I would only give that product a 3 or 4 rating because I was disappointed with how much smaller it was. :(

I bought this for my 2 and 3 year old sons. They enjoy naming all the numbers, counting the items on each piece and matching the pieces together. It was a good purchase. The pieces are nice and big (much larger than the alphabet set, which we also have) I like that it's wooden (very sturdy) and it has definitely helped them with their number recognition. I would recommend this product to others.Honest reviews on Learning Resources Woodshop Toys 1-2-3 Puzzle Blocks
I bought this because it was simular to one a friend has. I love it but for one thing--the container of the puzzle should always be bigger, this way when children are done or you need to quick clean up you can just throw all the pieces in its container and put lid on. Manufactures should think of these things more.Wednesday, September 17, 2014

Cheap Electronic Playground 50-in-one

The Electronic Playground reminds me very much of the type of electronics kit I had when I was young. I bought this for my son who is 6. While the instructions and details were a little above his head the kit was not. The projects are very straight forward and the the wiring guides are as easy as "connect the dots" (really!). My only minor complaint is that the frame is a bit flimsier (paper and plastic)then I would like.
My son and I did two projects in about 2 hours (two of the smaller ones) and I was able to use the kit to make some customizations (leverage the variable resistor add a light to the electronic buzzer etc.) and show him how circuits/components can be expanded and improved.
But beyond the ease of use the instruction booklet is really quite an excellent resource on basic electronics. For an older child the kit could/should provide a pretty good grounding (pardon the pun). The combination of straight forward instructions (so you get get things to work) and well written explanations (so you know why they work) is great.
I really can't wait to do more projects with my son or ....
maybe I'll just borrow it at night and do them myself.
The toy is lightly built and would probably be reduced to junk outside of adult supervision but it is sturdy enough for him to use when supervised.
As a parent, I will add that the guidebook which comes with this kit is very informative. It provides a lot of easy-to-understand introductory information on circuits and similar topics. My son seemed interested while we did a few of the lessons and projects together during some "father/son" time. I think this type of information is good for developing brains, since it gives children a brand new topic to analyze and absorb; it also gives them a basic understanding our our "electrical world".
In summary, I have mixed feelings. If you have a child who shows a liking or interest in this type of toy (assembling, testing, doing small projects, taking apart his/her current electronics toys to see how they work, etc.), then this might be a good choice. But, I cannot pound the table and say this is a "great" toy. It's a "good" toy for the right child. If you think your child might be the "right" child, then I encourage you to give it a try!
The playground is made of relatively inexpensive cardboard (really wish that they would have used something that felt more sturdy). However, it was very easy for my son to wire between the different pieces. He did not have any problem following the provided instructions. With the additional background that was provided, he was able to take the intended lesson and further explore on his own .... and understand what he was doing. With the Snap Circuits Pro, I did not feel like my daughter was given enough information to freely and easily experiment. Interesting that they seem to be made by the same manufacturer. My daughter has had her set for 3 years so maybe things have changed.
This was a very inexpensive way to provide a great introduction to electronics. My middle child was following along with my son and agreeing with all of the written explanations she learned at school for why the experirments worked. As an intro kit, there is certainly quite a lot that they teach the kid thru the many "experiements" and it is a good guide to test a child's interest in electronics before committing to a much more expensive set.
But I am sorry to say that it is very cheaply made. The base is a thick cardboard rather than plastic, so it easily tears. In fact, we ripped the battery flap almost immediately, even though we knew to be careful. Nothing a little strong tape couldn't fix, but considering that this toy is supposed to be tinkered with, it really needs to be made stronger to last awhile.

I got this for my ten year old son who was interested in electricity and electronics. We have been going thru the lessons one at a time and he has been learning a lot. We bought this for a boy (age 10 1/2). He found it interesting for a while, but grew tired of it quickly. If you have a child who is really into tinkering with electronics, etc., then this might be a good choice. Otherwise, it might become boring too quickly. Once the user gets a feel for how each of the included circuits, resistors, etc. work, then there's not much left.As a parent, I will add that the guidebook which comes with this kit is very informative. I purchased this for my 8 yo son who had an interest in learning more about electronics. My elder 11 yo daughter was not interested in sharing her snap circuits set (she has the SC-500). We were not interested in making a large initial investment. While I really like the snap circuits and the easy directions and ease of assembling different projects / experiements; but I prefer the electronic playground for the instructional manual. The manual does a very good job of explaining what is going on, for examples, how do resisters work, what are their puposes. It questions the student to come up with real life uses of a resister such as in a light dimmer. The playground is made of relatively inexpensive cardboard (really wish that they would have used something that felt more sturdy). We got this for Christmas, for my 8 year old son who is a budding electrician. He loves circuits and is familiar with Elenco products. Cheap LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet Set - Styles May Vary
My 4-year-old daughter is a former micropreemie and as a result, she is profoundly delayed, non-verbal/non-sign, and has autistic traits and sensory integration dysfunction (SID/DSI). She functions at about a 15-month old level. She got this toy for her birthday and it is AMAZING!!! She is identifying letters...if I say, "where's the K?" she'll put the K magnet in the toy. Since she has autistic traits, she likes repetition, and this is the perfect thing! She is even starting to say some letter sounds like, "mmm, mmm, mmm". She has MANY Leap Frog toys, and this is another great one to add to the list!! My daughter licks *everything* in sight, including the letter magnets of this toy, and it has not affected the ability of this toy to work.
*** Note to parents/friends of Autistic/SID/DSI kids My daughter "stims" on several of her toys, but this one doesn't cause her to do it as bad. She sometimes likes to push the button of the toy without a letter tile to hear it go "blingy, bling", and sometimes will push the letter tile/magnet repeatedly at the beginning of the song so it goes, "A/A/A/A...A says/A says...but like I said, not as bad as with other auditory toys. ***
I do find that I have the "A says ah and A says ayy" song in my head a lot. There are two volume settings and an off switch. However, even on the low setting this toy is awfully loud. We put clear packing tape over the speaker and that helped a lot. The ABC song and the letter sounds song are the ones you will find on other Leap Frog toys and the Leap Frog videos. This is good if you want reinforcement...which my daughter needs.
The magnets are nice and strong. If they come off the fridge, they aren't too bad to step on either :-o! ...unlike the "traditional" letter/number magnets.
The toy is very multisensory kinesthetic, auditory, visual (color/letter), and tactile. Kudos to Leap Frog for another great educational toy!
My 6 year-old also likes to help his sister with this toy. He loves to arrange the letters for her and quiz her. Then he likes to spell words and teach them to her. The vowels are red and the consonants are yellow or blue. So I ask my daughter to find letters based on certain colors to increase the educational value. Unfortunately, her name has two l's and two e's, so we can't spell her name with the letters.
When you place a letter in this gadget, though, the gadget sings an entire song from The Talking Letter Factory movie by Leap Frog: "The A says Aaah, the A says Aaah, every letter makes a sound, the A says Aaah." The song is informative, but it's lengthiness gets in the way of showing a child that letter sounds can be glued together to make words. In order to show your child that D,O, and G make the word DOG, you have to listen to the D song and then the whole O song and then the whole G song.
I would only recommend this product to a child who does not know his letter sounds at all not to a child who is ready to put letter sounds together to make words. My one year old son was a more appropriate user of this product than my three year old.
I would not recommend this product to a parent or teacher who wants to avoid teaching letter names until letter sounds are mastered.

This is a GREAT toy. My daughter is 23 months and loves playing with this toy. It's great that it's in the kitchen too so I can cook or clean while she plays. She has pulled it off the fridge and banged it a few times and it still works great. I love that she is learning the alphabet so early. She now recognizes letters and points them out to me. We had foam letters for the tub too, but this is the best and most fun. We love Leap Frog!Best Deals for LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet Set - Styles May Vary
This is an amazing product. My mother purchased it for my 1 year old at Christmas, and even though she doesn't understand it yet on an educational level, it works on her motor skills because she has to pick the letters off of the fridge and put them correctly in the spot for them. She then gets the reward of listening to it sing to her. My four year old daughter will sit in front of the refrigerator for what seems like forever and just arrange the letters in order while she sings the alphabet song along with the toy. My oldest daughter who is six will sometimes even go to the magnets when she is stuck on a reading word and I tell her to sound it out. Lastly, every child that comes to our house is drawn to the magnets. They all love it, and so do I !Honest reviews on LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet Set - Styles May Vary
I thought that my child would be able to place a letter in the special gadget that comes with this product and quickly hear the sound the letter makes. I thought that we could quickly place three letters in the gadget in a row, and hear their sounds, rapid fire. For example, I thought you could place the letters D, O, and G on the fridge and quickly get to hear all of the sounds in the word dog. I based my assumption on the fact that some of Leap Frog's products allow you to hear the letter sounds without being distracted by songs that tell about the letter names. (The Leap Frog caterpillar toy called Alphabet Pal allows you to do this.)When you place a letter in this gadget, though, the gadget sings an entire song from The Talking Letter Factory movie by Leap Frog: "The A says Aaah, the A says Aaah, every letter makes a sound, the A says Aaah." This little cylinder has quite the special effects. It's beautiful and fun to use, but also carries with it a certain kind of power -or maybe that's just the kid in me remembering experiences with thunder and feeling my guts tingle. It makes you feel that when you use this simple device, you are actually conversing with the Thunder Gods and soon, very soon, it will be raining and booming.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program the children could not get enough of these wonderful specs which show us how how animals see life.
in the upper grades this may spark discussion of evolution, and how one vision has advantage over others, and not, and preservation and survival, etc.
But at the lower levels it makes for very interesting times and excellent masks.
good at any grade, engaging and demonstrating the reality
I think that this toy rates really high on the scale of the coolness factor of toys that the kids have played with. Educational and intriguing. A winner!

I can't wait to use these with my first graders next year. I had my own family check them out and my college aged children said they would have lived these. What a great way to let students see the way animals see.Best Deals for Educational Insights Geosafari Junior Animal Eye Viewers, Set of 3
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The educational value of this toy receives and A++++. My science-minded daughter could not get enough of all three of these viewers, but she loved the "insect" viewer the best. All five of our kids, ranging from age 5-10, took turns looking through these, and it turned into hours of good fun for them. I only wish that this set had MORE than three different viewers, and I would pay more for a bigger, more substantial set. Also would have been great if the company would have included more literature about each "animal" represented.I think that this toy rates really high on the scale of the coolness factor of toys that the kids have played with. Educational and intriguing. A winner!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program What can a shark see? What can an insect see? What can a chameleon see? If you have a curious child who is four through eight years old then this would make a great gift for them. GeoSafari Jr. Animal Eye Viewers are a set of three animal masks with lenses that help the child see the world like a shark, chameleon, or insect would. They can carry them around on a nature walk or around the house. They can better understand how other creatures see the world differently from themselves. It is a fun way to learn and explore.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Educational Insights Geosafari Junior Animal Eye Viewers, Set of 3
the chameleon and insect eye viewers didn't seem to offer a different view as promised. this was overall a bit disappointing.
