My 3 year old loves this toy. We bring this in the car or to the restaurant for my son to play with. Since he got it for Christmas, he has finally started to learn phonics which I had previously tried teaching him using flashcards. Like the other posters have mentioned, this toy's music doesn't drive me crazy. It's easier on the nerves than most. The toy has many features including a game in which children are either given the letter name or the sound and asked to locate the corresponding letter. It keeps score so you can monitor progress. The music option lets them play the alphabet song providing they hit the letter keys in order from left to right (like reading). Great toy! I would have rated it 6 stars had that been possible. We've had lots of electronic toys, but this has been mine and my son's favourite. LeapFrog toys are superior.

My niece is two and loves this toy. She plays for hours at a time and likes to mimic the sounds. I always buy educational toys and feel that Leapfrog has toys for all ages and children learn as they play. How can you beat that? If you want your child to be entertained and learn at the same time BUY THIS TOY!

I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old for Christmas and have really enjoyed watching her play with it. She sings the alphabet song along with it, which is a treat for me. My 5 year old nephew who is a special needs child also loves this toy, and loves the Letter Sounds mode. It has been dropped down a flight of stairs already and is still working perfectly. The option to turn the sound down is also great. Anyone who has kids knows that the most annoying thing is to hear a toy all the time, and when this is turned down it is definately manageable, and not nearly as distracting.

Ok, my wife purchased the leap frog alpha-pet explorer from a used toy shop (At least that's where we get most of the kids toys, almost brand new, half the price). My boy loved it. Played with it for the first six months constantly. I had some individuals (mainly his speech therapist) state it should be used in moderation, and I agree. However, my son might not be talking as much as other children but he sure knows his alphabet. Ask him to bring some of his fridge phonics letters over (made by the same company) and he can do it by the letters name or sound (he could do this by age two). Would I use this toy as they only thing to teach the alphabet to my son? NO! Do I find it useful in moderation and to supplement other learning methods? Yes!!

*As a side note I have done a fair amount of research into early reading programs, and have had much better results with phonic based material.

My son received this as a gift when he was not quite two years old. He liked playing around with it right away but was really only able to play with two of the modes the music and the one that just tells you the letter. Now that he's nearing 3 year old he plays with this literally every day. He'll sit for 15 minutes (or more) at once playing with this. And he's clearly learning his letters and the sounds they make. Now he plays all the games on it and is learning about how to make his name out of letters. He enjoys it and it has been a great learning tool for him.

I like it because on the lower volume (which, lucky for me my son will leave it at) it doesn't annoy me in the slightest. Most noise-making toys annoy me too much.

Our son had a set of these that he loved to play with at his preschool. We finally tracked them down on Amazon and bought a few sets for the play room and a few as Christmas gifts for friends that have children. Everyone loves them. They are always getting pulled out when we have visitors come over to play and it's so nice to see them play with something that doesn't need batteries for once and something that might actually still be considered fun even as he gets older. They are quite sturdy and have been stepped on and dropped many times with no ill-effects. Would highly recommend a pair or 2 of these glasses for a rainy day pick-me-up.

[I have a Style 2. The three styles work the same way, differing only in their shape. Since the shape is unimportant and has nothing to do with the way the guitars perform, I'm repeating my review of the Style 2 here.]

I wasn't aware of Paper Jamz instruments until this year's Black Friday sales when many stores were selling them dirt cheap. My first thought was that it was a cute twist on air-guitar, but something had me look into it a bit further and I couldn't believe what I was reading. That much technology for about $20?!?!?!

Also, I've been playing guitar for ages and, after reading the many descriptions and reviews, I began to wonder how much real music could be made with one of these guitars...so I got one!

I still can't believe it!

You like music? Well, this is like music. In fact, it arguably *is* music. Most guitar players are familiar with the concept of "open tunings". In standard tuning, strumming the open strings of the guitar is not particularly harmonious because the notes don't form a chord. With open tunings, a guitar is tuned so that the open strings *do* form a chord, and that's how the Paper Jamz guitars are set up. Move your right hand over where the strings would be on a real guitar, with your left hand not touching the neck, and you get the sound of an E chord. If you place the index finger of your left hand across all the strings anywhere on the neck, you get a another chord, just a different pitch. Placing your index finger across all the strings just behind the first fret gives an F chord and so on 2-F#/Gb, 3-G, 4-G#/Ab, 5-A, and so on.

The standard rock song has three chords. In the key of G, they would be G, C, and D, and you get them by placing the index finger of your left hand across the "strings" at 3rd, 8-th, and 10-th frets, respectively. So, yes, you can make real music with the Paper Jamz guitar!

But wait! There's more! If you're a 3 year old, you can still make music with the thing. Have mom or dad put in in song mode and when you strum you get nice sounding proper chords for the songs built into the guitar or songs that mom or dad can have added for you.

I've had the guitar for a while now with much to report.

Setup *can* be a royal pain. It installs Apple Quicktime on your Windows computer if it is not already there. When it is run for the first time under Win XP, an error message may be generated that the program cannot run because the file winusb.dll is missing. In that case you, can either download a copy from the Web or copy it from another computer that has it. The file should be placed in the directory C:\Windows\system32. (If downloading, please be careful if visiting an unfamiliar site because there are many sites that appear to offer free downloads in an attempt to get users to unsuspectingly download malware.)

I found the software performed flawlessly once it was installed and recognized the guitar. The guitar's overall sound can be can be set to one of 13 settings.

* 12 string electric

* acoustic

* acoustic compressed

* country (as close to a tele as a #20 plastic guitar can get!)

* garage

* jamcaster

* nervous system

* rectifier

* robot revolution

* sitar

* superchunk

Then, there are the songs. Some come with the application. There is also a long list of other songs that are PaperJamz Pro compatible. They can be purchased from iTunes, but they need not be if you already own them.

As an experiment, I ripped Elton John's "Bennie and the Jets" from his Greatest Hits CD. When I moved it to the library by drag-and-drop, the program recognized it as compatible. When I moved it to the guitar, it behaved like the songs that came with the guitar. Whenever I strummed the guitar, it played the proper chord!

As another experiment, with great hopes, I loaded a song that wasn't on the list. At first, I was disappointed that the program wasn't fooled, but then I found that I could play my own chords along with the song. That is, in may ways it was no different from playing a real guitar tuned to an open tuning. This song was in the key of C, so placing my finger across the fingerboard just before the 8-th fret gave me a "C" chord, just before the 1-st fret gave me an "F", and just before the 3-rd fret gave me a "G".

So, there are *three* ways the guitar can be used.

* freestyle, playing your own notes or chords

* strumming along to compatible songs without ever hearing a bad chord.

* strumming along to songs that are not compatible where it's your job to find the right chord.

It might seem that there's no real difference between the first and third way. If the guitar is in freestyle, you can play along with anything. But, having a song or two at the ready whenever you want it is a nice touch.

As a guitar player, one thing that confused me initially was how to play minor chords. The user's guide shows two circles, which I interpreted as the placement of two fingertips. However, it's really where the finger goes. For example, to play an "A" chord, a finger is place across the fingerboard just before the 5-th fret. To play an "A minor", one finger is place across the fingerboard just before the 5-th fret while another finger is place across the fingerboard just before the 6-th fret, that is, just add one more finger. It also stresses the importance of placing the finger squarely across the fingerboard. If it crosses a fret so that it's spanning a fret, you'll get a minor chord instead of the major.

Highly recommended. I still can't believe all of this technology is being sold as inexpensively as it is.

Oh, yes. One other very important thing. Because these instruments are meant to be played with each other and with recorded music, they had better be in proper pitch...and they are! I'd considered using toy instruments to make real music but was always put off by their invariably being sharp or flat. Not so with the Power Jamz guitars!

I can download my own songs as well as download different guitar sounds to change the tone of the guitar.

The Pro version lets you play single notes, chords, bend notes, hammer ons and tapping. There's a "rip strip" which acts like a whammy bar, as well as a motion sensor built in that acts like tremelo or vibrato when you shake the guitar.

This model's fret board matches a real guitar so aspiring musicians can actually learn where notes are on the guitar neck.

This is the closest you can get to playing rock guitar with out buying a real electric guitar and amp. My boys LOVE it!!

Totally worth the $$.

Plug it into good speakers and you really hear how great this sounds.

We bought this for our 4 year old for Christmas and were not sure what to expect. This is the coolest toy and we went out after Christmas and got another one for our year old. We have all enjoyed playing with it. We also bought the strap and the amp. The strap is helpful but if I had it to do over, I would not buy the amp. The guitar has great sound on it's own and we generally don't bother hooking up the amp.

My 2 year old daughter loves this toy! We bought it for her last week, and she has played with it every day. There are three modes of playnaming the object in English and Spanish, finding the object, and deductive reasoning (the object is red, there are three of these. I do have two problems with the toy though. I think the taped voice is sometimes difficult to understand, especially for one who is just beginning to understand different words, and the pictures are sometimes difficul to recognizefor example the balloons and the maracas look very similar, and do not accurately represent what these objcts actually look like.

Hi everyone! I just bought this toy for my daughter a couple weeks ago-and I'm so glad I did. My daughter is 16 months and she is soooo into Dora the Explorer-she's thinks she's the coolest chica on 2 feet, next to mommy of course,wink wink. So, I picked this toy up because it seemed to scream to me on the shelf with all of it's pretty colors and lights..and Dora. I was going to save it until xmas but we(meaning I) couldn't resist. The different modes are great so you don't get sick of the same old thing. We can both learn some Spanish and listen to Doras backpack sing, and watch the lights and try to find the objects Dora is looking for in Spanish. Very durable-my daughter stands on it a lot(its her new thing) and it's held up like the best. We both love this toy, I recommend it to all DORA fans!

I agree with the review by Manhattan Mom stating that some of the pictures are hard to tell what they are, and sometimes the voice is a little hard to understand. That being said, it hasn't deterred my 2-year old daughter at all, and she seems to understand it just fine. She plays with this toy on a daily basis and loves it. She loves the fact that it plays short snippets of the Backpack song and the We Did It song too. Great purchase for us.

My daughter likes Dora and we had a Dora party for her 2nd birthday. She was always interested in my son's Blues Clues light up alphabet toy so this toy seemed like it would be a hit. She plays with it a few minutes each day but then abandons it. I think she has trouble because she doesn't recognize the spanish words. My soon to be 5-year-old son has played with it more. She definitely prefers the Dora Floating Island bathtub toy she got. She plays with it both in and out of the bathtub. Perhaps she will get more into it as she gets older and she becomes more familiar with the Spanish words.

I am a baby-holic and have expensive taste. I received this book as a gift and LOVE it. I have been reading it to my baby since he was four months (he's now seven) and it is by far his favorite book. He loved looking at the interactive images during tummy time, it was the only thing I could do to stop him from crying on his stomach. Now that he's moving, I use it to lure him to crawl and it works wonders. I have other soft books but this one has more crinkly paper which works well. I have even read it to a 3 year old toddler and he can't stop reciting the words. This is definitely my next baby shower gift!!!

This is a great book for infants and toddlers. It is soft and has several flaps to lift, under which baby is hididng. The flaps have different textures and/or make different noises. It is also very colorful with simple text that teaches different prepositions: udner, behind, it, etc. Under the last flap is a mirror in which your baby can see himself. I washed mine and let it air dry and it held up well.

My grandson is a very good student and he loves activities that help him to learn and have fun. When he heard we had this volcano kit he just had to work on it. This is a wonderful kit for several reasons. There is an activity book and an adventure guide that provides fun activities and some scientific background on what volcanoes are and how they work. There is a great hands-on part of the kit where your children get to paint and create their own volcano design. And finally the grand finally where the volcano erupts and they see their lessons and creative design in action. The results can be seen in our attached video.

My grandson learned a lot about volcanoes, where they are located like the Ring of Fire, the location of the largest volcano in our solar system, how seismic monitors work and the parts of a volcano. He had a good time and learned a lot.

It was a several hour project of studying, painting and finally taking the volcano outside to make it erupt. Though the chemicals are safe I recommend adult supervision when adding and mixing the chemicals and creating the eruption. We both had fun on this project and so did my wife. I recommend this as a good learning tool and a family activity.

I had three children working on this Volcano Kit. It comes with one small paint brush and a small set of paint colors, so I brought out a few more paintbrushes of a similar size. The children wished for bigger paintbrushes and more paint. It turns out, the paint supplied was enough to cover the volcano, and the colors were in a scheme that would work no matter how the children applied it. It looked pretty good.

The kit comes with citric acid, sodium bicarbonate, and some red coloring. Mix it together and add some water to see it work. There wasn't a huge eruption, so we decided to try one of the alternative methods suggested by Dr. Cool: baking soda, vinegar and detergent.

My son gives this kit four stars, because the volcano did not give the eruption he expected, but it was fun overall.

This is not our first volcano science kit, but it was certainly the best one we've come across. What made the experience better for us was the ceramic volcano. The last kit we bought was just a bag of paper mache and our volcano ended up being an ugly mess. I also loved the real specimens in this kit. This is definitely a durable "volcano" that can be used time and time again, provided care is used when conducting an experiment. If you didn't know, "a volcano is a type of mountain formed when the earth's surface opens an molten rock from deep within the earth's core comes out." Of course before you know the hows and whys of a volcanic eruption, you do have to know about the structure of the earth.

Dr. Cool has written an Adventure Guide that tells you a lot about volcanoes. The guide has some pretty amazing diagrams and full color photographs that will practically blow your mind. Just kidding, but you will learn about things like plate tectonics, the "Ring of Fire," the parts of a volcano, the three different types, how volcanoes are classified, the largest ones on earth, how volcanic eruptions are predicted, "volcanic winter," the benefits of volcanoes, geothermal energy, and you'll learn about the rocks in your kit.

There are also some "Cool Science Facts" scattered throughout the book. For example, did you know that "pumice is so light that it floats on water?" It does! Along with your Adventure Guide there's an Activity Booklet with some "A-Maze-Ing" puzzles for you to work out.

This is an excellent volcano science kit that children will love experimenting with. Of course if you have additional citric acid and sodium bicarbonate you will be able to run this "experiment" time and time again. If the completed volcano is unfired it will obviously not look like the picture, but keep that in mind when you order. Most towns and some schools do have a kiln available and would probably be willing to a volcano in it (inquire first).

The lava "explosion" is essentially an Endothermic Chemical Reaction, a safe one, but I'd still recommend adult supervision. This would be a fun, educational experiment that can be conducted at home or in a homeschool or classroom setting.

My son loves this game! You can make your car in the beginning by selecting body style, color and one more custom element (flames, engine, spoiler, etc) and you drive along the road like the other games for this system. The games within it are fun. You can pick engines and drop them into different cars. The object is to rev the engine to a certain number on the tachometer. In another game, you crash into the cars with the highest numbers on them and try to get the highest score. Another is a racing game... Its great for kids that like cars. Its a little educational, but he doesn't get it yet. He just likes playing the games. Its rated for 4+ so I am sure he'll figure it out soon.

I really wish FP would do a second gen of this player! It has been the only one to live through 3 little kids! InnoTab 1st & 2nd gen broke quickly. MobiGo lived a lot longer, but not that much more! We still have 2 out of 3 iXLs working and the iXLs are the oldest of all these items! This game is a good one. Not all are, but the nice thing was you could install on as many as you wanted. You don't have to sell a kidney for your kids to enjoy this little marvel.

Signing Time has created another wonderful product. This book is very sturdy. I have triplet 2.5 year olds and they love Signing Time. This book, along with the other two, are their favorite books. There are 10 flower petals with holes from 1 to 10 in them. After you build the flower puzzle, you put pegs in the holes and count from 1 to 10, so this is educational, and it's also cute and colorful. I did deduct a star because the pegs are very small and might be easy to lose if parents didn't watch their kids with this toy.

I used this to get off some annoying afternoon eating habits that I suspected to just fulfill the need to chew something more substantial than gum. I'm a healthy adult and can chomp on this all I want without making a dent (unless I do my best to pinch little chips off with my canines, that would probably work if I really put myself to the task on a rainy day). Chocolate flavor is very muted and can't really taste it after a while, which is obviously a bit of a pity. Works well though.

I have had this item for over a month and it still smells like chocolate. It has held up very well for one a my clients, who is a frequent chewer.

I didn't buy this for a child, I use it to pick up tiny feeder crickets. For the purpose I'm using it for, it works fantastic. 1/4 inch crickets are hard to pick up with out injuring them. Sometimes they don't go into the tubes and it can be a PITA to catch them. That's where this toy really comes in handy! It sucks the little buggers right up! It didn't work too hot on the spider my son tried to get off the ceiling. If the bug has some grab on something or you don't have the right angle, it's not as successful at sucking up the bug. If you need to grab tiny crickets out of the corner of the cricket bin, this does a stellar job!

Our house has become a fraternity for Stink Bugs. Those little jerks swarm our house every fall thanks to the soybean field behind our house. Is that a stain on your curtain? Nope, that's a colony of stinkbugs trying to stay warm for the winter.

My wife refuses to catch bugs in a cup..you know, the old fashioned way...so i ordered this bad boy to try to coax her to catch sneaky little buttholes ...and it worked!

She can vacuum the bugs like she does the carpets...vrrooooom vroooooom and then empty them outside.

The only thing that kept this from being 4 stars is that the suction could be a little better...but i guess you don't want "cream o' bug" in your vacuum so i can see why the suction is on the low side
