TESLA COIL

Wow! What a great science demonstration. The coil sparks, transmits energy across space, lights incandescent and fluorescent bulbs at a distance (or with only one wire). Tesla's theories were obviously correct. Cheapest and most reliable kit coil on the market.

I was hoping that since this was a TESLA coil that it wouldn't need to be plugged into Electricity to get it to work, but it does. The spark it pretty neat to see and it's good for experiments but I would have been better off looking for something else for my needs.

I love this product so much because I can create so many different activties with these letter cards for my kids to play and learn at the same time. My son is six so he can create words and learn how to spell his words for his homework and my 3 yr old can learn to put words together too.

Excellent for preschoolers to 1st graders who love to read. They can start spelling new words by combining all the different sounds. color coding helps, aids in rhyming, too. Good investment for kids.

I never review things I have never purchased, but you could not convince me to pay that much money for this. It is a novel idea, but disappointing to see such a dated model. It has been dated for many years. First of all, the animal should have feathers, and it's forelimbs should fold like the wings of a bird. It looks too much like a beast and bears none of the animal's true elegance. And what a fierce elegance it can be!

The model should educate children based on recent scientific findings. In an age where dinosaurs are becoming even more dynamic and even better understood than ever before, this model, despite it's best intentions, is too old to be relevant. I'm sure it's wonderful for teaching anatomy to children, but if you want to spend this much money teaching them dinosaur anatomy, buy a different dinosaur.

(and, just a personal pet peeve . . . 4D. Really? The fourth dimension is *time* folks.)

I cannot agree with the former reviewer. It is about as accurate as you can get, the feather no withstanding. It is easy assemble and educational in the process. If I were to have one caveat, it would be not showing the wrist joint whose construction mirrors that of birds and establishes the dinosaur-bird family relationship.

Best LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Lowercase Letters Expansion Pack Deals

LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Lowercase Letters Expansion Pack
Customer Ratings: 5 stars

Buyer beware; these letter are the larger heavier magnet letters for the original blue Word Whammer with the red handle on top, and the original Fridge Phonics that is a blue and green square. The newer, smaller white jet ("Leapfrog Fridge Words Magnetic Word Builder") that also spells 3 letter words, and the new "LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Magnetic Alphabet Set" that looks like a yellow star and a blue cloud use smaller, lighter weight letters.

The Leap Frog Fridge Phonics are awesome learning tools and lots of fun. My son just turned three, and knows his alphabet, upper and lower case, by name and all the different sounds each letter makes, and spells 3 letter words and knows how to spell many longer words as well. I can't recommend them enough. He also has the ClickStart computer, the Word Launch 4 letter word builder (with non-magnetic letters), the Turbo-Twist Addition, subtraction, and Phonics, the Little Touch Leap Pad, My First Leap Pad, Leap Pad, and Quantum Pad, Tag, and the 5 Leap Frog DVDs, Math Circus, Letter Factory, Talking Words Factory, Code Word Caper, and storybook Factory. All their stuff is great!

Although advertised as compatible with ALL fridge phonics sets, I was dissapointed to open the expansion pack on my son's birthday and discover that the letters did not fit his fridge phonics word builder or magnetic alphabet set. A call to Leap Frog to try and resolve the problem was unsuccessful. The company does not seem to understand the meaning of the word ALL. They claim that the phonics products I have are new and the expansion pack is old therefore negating the compatibility. The packaging does not list any product age disclaimers. Luckily, Amazon accepted the return easily.

For anyone who has the basic Word Whammer from LeapFrog, the lowercase expansion pack is a must-have. My 4-year-old grandson loved the Word Whammer, but he was even more excited to receive the lower case letters. He learned them very quickly, and they fit into the Word Whammer interchangably with the upper case letters. We've been having a great time learning sounds and spelling words.

Honest reviews on LeapFrog Fridge Phonics Lowercase Letters Expansion Pack

My son knew his capital letters but had a hard time with the lower case letters. He would get the b & d mixed up. We have both the word whammer & fridge phonics. after a week of playing, My 5 year old & 3 year old know know all the letters big & little.

We live overseas--English letters and words are pronounced differently, so this is VERY helpful for our daughter to say things the "American" way. She loves the music and has started recognizing the letters. We bought the first pack (capital letters) and bought this one, so that she can start spelling. Her teacher says that she is very good at identifying letters at her daycare. Her older brother helps her with this and it keeps her busy when we are working together in the kitchen. We will definately get the Word Whammer so she can start to spell.

A nice variation on a classic. The book is well constructed and the graphics are great. The magic hat pictures create an animation as you flip the pages nice effect. Unlike the classic magic coloring book, this one does not create a 3 way illusion (black and white, color, blank) but just has text and images. The advantage is that it is not as clumsy as the original and it's clean design allows for use as a close up prop as well as parlor performance. About time this effect was given a facelift.

This game is great for my 3K son. He needs to learn his alphabetletters, sounds, and writing. He feels like a "big boy" playing his game and he is learning! We like it.

My son was getting stuck on the second letter (H) so I tried helping him. I did everything it asks you to do several times but after the last step it starts you over saying, Are you ready to learn the letter H? Really? Ug. How is it an adult can't even get this game to progress. Maybe I got a dud, stuck on a loop But really, save yourself the frustration and try a different game.

Update: I got tired of having this game just sitting around being useless so I called customer service. They told me they were having difficulties with this game and to recalibrate the screen. (you can get there by holding the ? button while you turn the system on or go into the settings) it finally let us get past H but is still a little too difficult to be labeled for 3 yr olds. There are other 4+ games out there that are easier to play.

Best Deals for LeapFrog Explorer Learning Game: Letter Factory

This is one of my daughters favorite games on her leap pad. She is 3 1/2 and while she already knows her letters pretty well, this is helping to cement the sounds with the letters in her mind. This game teaches what the letters look like, what they sound like, and how to write them, all using fun little games. I love it when kids are having so much fun learning that they don't realize they are actually learning! It's definitely an easier game for the little ones. My 7 year old played it for a minute and got bored since he can already read etc

This was purchased as a gift for a four-year-old grandson. He loves it!!

I taught school for 40 years before I retired--the last 18 years were in preschool. If I still were teaching I would get several of these players and games to use in centers for the children. This game teaches capital and lower case letter identification, how to write them, and phonics in a most delightful way!! The game shows how a letter is made and then the child traces it in the right way or tries again until he has it. Great feedback!! And most of all--fun, fun, fun!!

Review of Fellowes Mouse Pad with Microban Antimicrobial Protection, Graphite

Fellowes Mouse Pad with Microban Antimicrobial Protection, Graphite
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

For a $5 mousepad, it has everything that I expect. the surface is soft so my hand feels comfortable on it. It has rubber pad on the other side which keeps it from sliding everywhere on the table. I don't know much about the "Microban" stuff regarding antimicrobial issue but it does seem to collect quite some dirt easily. So far I can just use my hand to pat it off.

Tracking:: I'm using Logitech VX revolution mouse (Laser) on it. This mousepad really slow it down quite a bit. (possibly due to the softness of the surface) It is not quite sensitive and precise and require a noticable slight more effort to move the curser around. Please keep in mind that my comparison is between putting the mouse on bare table surface and on this mousepad. I like fast and sensitive mouse but well, I adjust just fine so far.

DO not buy this pad if you have a wood finish surface. I purchased the Microban mouse pad six weeks ago. To my horror when I removed the pad there was a clear outline of the pad in my new $7000 desk Apparently the black non stick-surface of this pad can react with certain wood finishes. I can't recommend this pad unless your desktop is a non wood surface.

The other mousepad was a quarter of an inch thick and and all the corners were raised up.So this mousepad was well worth the money, and is working great. It's made from rubber so I dont think the sides coming apart or rolling up will not be a problem. Thanks

Honest reviews on Fellowes Mouse Pad with Microban Antimicrobial Protection, Graphite

Never used one of these, though I've been mousing for more than 15 years as a profesional illustrator/graphic artist. I hate the slick, plastic surfaced pads because my hand sweats, so this is the perfect mouse surface for me: fabric, good size, anti-microbial. You oughta try one. Sincerely, Art Boy

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Fellowes Mouse Pad with Microban Antimicrobial Protection, Graphite

I had been experiencing jumpy mouse pointer movement with a Logitech MX700 optical mouse and an LX7 laser mouse. Logitech Support Answer ID 29 described that a black or wood grain surface could cause erratic mouse pointer movement. Those are the surfaces that I have. This is a link to the support document.

I chose the silver Fellowes Microban mousepad (model 5934001) for its higher reflectivity. It measures 3/32-in (3mm) thick by 9-in (23cm) wide by 8-in (20cm)deep. The thinness of this pad is useful for fitting over the integrated black mousepad on a keyboard tray. I chose the pricier Microban product because surfaces do get a bit grimy around my workstation.

Learning Resources Stethoscope Reviews

Learning Resources Stethoscope
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

We just got this Stethoscope for our 2 1/2 year old because she had been asking for one. This is a nice Stethoscope, but it really hurts when you put it in your ears! I had read the reviews but figured that maybe the other reviewers were exaggerating. They weren't. I can only put it in my ears for a few seconds and my daughter has not been able to put it in her ears yet. I am going to keep looking for a Stethoscope that does not hurt so much.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

Great toy. My granddaughter hung it around her neck and became a doctor. It is just like a real one, looks like one, works well and people can hear the heart beat. It is somewhat tight in her ears which we tried to adjust, but that is the only concern we had. Great value for the money we spent.

Best Deals for Learning Resources Stethoscope

I really like this stethoscope. The only reason I didn't rate it for 5 stars, is because it's actually very tight on the ears. I'm not sure if it will loosen up as we use it, so we'll see.

As for the durability and level of fun/education it's really great. I bought it for my kids for Christmas and they love it. You can hear your heart very good. The kids really love playing doctor and it's hilarious to watch my son (6 years old) take them off his ears and drape the whole thing around his neck like real doctor does.

Honest reviews on Learning Resources Stethoscope

Learning Resources Stethoscope / B00004WKU2

When my heart starting skipping beats unexpectedly due, apparently, to chronic stress, I decided I needed a stethoscope on hand for quick assessments of my heart beat during my palpitation periods. Amazon is my standby in these emergencies and, among the expensive "med student" options, there was this Learning Resources toy. The results, in my opinion, are mixed.

First, this is not the most sensitive of stethoscopes. The heart beat is softer than more expensive stethoscopes, probably to lessen potential damage to a child's eardrums if the stethoscope is mishandled. (Seriously, that would be a huge concern of mine before handing this toy over to a child. Hearing loss is permanent and should not be flirted with.) The stethoscope realistically picks up every errant movement or flutter of clothing, so the user must hold very, very still in order to get a decent read on the already soft-sounding heart rate.

Second, as others have noted, the hearing pieces on this stethoscope HURT. I can't leave the stethoscope in my ears for more than a minute or so. The hearing pieces are fairly big (I'd estimate larger than a small child's ear could comfortably accommodate, but I can't say with certainty), very hard, and press inwards strongly, and at an uncomfortable angle. Attempts to "stretch" the metal out a bit have failed so far.

Bottom line, though, is that this stethoscope does work for what I purchased it for, even if it doesn't work as well or as painlessly as I'd like. I can monitor my heart during periods of bad heart activity, although I dislike that the stethoscope is too painful to use for frequent "spot checks". I can't imagine that this would be a particularly sturdy toy if I have to keep the chewy rubber away from inquisitive cats, I'd have to think that small teeth could so just as much, if not more, damage. Although I suppose the majority of children don't chew on their toys past age 5, a younger brother or sister could wreak a goodly amount of havoc on this toy.

Ordered this item, along with a pair of children's scrubs, for my 5 year old daughter. She was super excited when the box arrived. She has been playing doctor to her bears/baby dolls/family and wearing around her neck since. She loves that it looks just like Mommies (I'm a RN Nursing Student). Perfect size, fits perfectly in ears, and being able to actually hear heartbeats is wonderful!! I think I have a future doctor on my hands.

I own 2 of these printers and am buying a 3rd in the next few weeks. my printers run 24/7 building parts for my business. they are both trouble free. i install a clean nozzle and recalibrate nozzle height every week. that's it.

i run the cheapest abs available and have no problems at all.

print quality is GREAT.

the software that comes with the printer is GREAT.

my printers have no faults at all.

these are truly commercial quality printers.

update 2-13-13:

running three of these now. fried a cpu on one, table heater failed on another. ALL covered by warranty. have an occasional plugged tip but that's it. these are bad boys :)

Having owned another brand of 3D printer, and researched many others, this printer is hands down great! Fast prints with low resolution, slow prints with high resolution, easy to use software, telephone tech support. The print quality is very good. The software is easy to use. Wonderful. The first and second prints were absolutely great, and they keep being great (dozens so far)! This printer does the best job of documentation, tech support, everything you need. If one does a simple web search on getting ABS plastic to stick when printing, even so, again this printer does a great job with that as the supplied print platform holds the part well while printing.

The printer can be set to print fast (fan flap open or not) with 0.4mm layers, or super high detail with fan cooled 0.15mm slow printed layers. I printed great 28mm models for my 13 year old son, and now he is using it to print his stuff. Impressive detail. As a parent I couldn't be happier. I also print housings for work as fast as they can print, with repeatable great quality. Holds mechanical shapes well. Holes print very well. No post drilling required as the holes print properly! Strong accurate parts.

If you have never printed with a 3D printer before, you might find issues with 3D printing. My only issue, is ABS plastic printers have a tenancy to warp larger parts right where they attach to the build platform. I am experimenting this ABS warping issue, (but this is an issue with all sub ten thousand dollar printers). I have tried many things. So far I found that the supplied printing base works very well,(but parts when printing can come loose). For this price point this is a great printer. (As I understand this, this issue goes away with PLA plastic, but PLA does not have as high a working temperature if one wants to use the parts for real things. PLA gets soft at 60C, and ABS takes at least 110C to get soft, a big deal with parts that might sit in a hot car, or get truck shipped.) Even so, this printer can print PLA!

Update 2/28/2013 Experimenting with part warping where it attaches to the build platform. Works for no warping at all!

A 2mm raft thickness works, (and is truly needed to fully level the build platform).

Keep the fan on. It makes great parts this way, and the rafts are easier to remove.

The only thing that I have found to work (to prevent wapring) is using the ABS/Acetone paint on the supplied FR4 fiberglass build surface they provide. (When applying the paint, remember the holes, and make sure you paint this on something that will not be harmed. I use a glass plate as a backing during painting.) The included documentation tells how to make the ABS/Acetone paint. Then purchase more clips (they supply six of them) and hold the fiberglass build surface fully along the front and back sides (remembering to leave clips off each corner where the nozzle can come down and hit them). I paint this slurry on before each build. The holes in the fiberglass are fully filled with ABS, and a very thin coat in on the top. It is real work to get the part off when done, but the supplied two inch wide putty knife works very well to remove the part. The build surface is very stiff with the holes filled with ABS. Using this I have not had any of the printed parts warp.

The things below were tried and do not work very well, in descending order.

1) I found that the supplied printing base works OK, but parts when printing can come loose, and the supplied build surface with holes can and warp. It is somewhat flexable, and the parts warp even when attached (and can pull up if no ABS/Acetone paint is used).

2) Kapton tape with ABS/Acetone slurry on top holds to the printed part super well to the Kapton, but the parts generally pull the tape up and warp.

3) 3M Blue painters tape (no slurry), as is, holds the printed part super well, but the parts usually pull the tape up and warp.

4) ABS/Acetone painted on glass held the parts, but the parts pulled up and warped.

If your application can tolerate some warping, then

Blue tape on glass seemed easiest. (about $20 for six glass 5.5" by 5.5" plates from a local glass shop) Just replace tape when needed.

The supplied build platform with the holes worked very well most of the time.

All in all, a truly great 3D printer.

Best Deals for Afinia 3D Printer H-Series

my company bought me this to prototype parts for our business. Very easy setup and I disagree with the reviews that say you can't get the platform level: by definition, a plane is defined by three points (there are three screws to adjust the level); it just takes patience. I'll cut to the chase: take the ABS "raft" pieces or any misprints you have so far and add them to 2 or 3 oz of acetone in a Mason jar (or other glass container). Lightly "Paint" (i.e. prime) the FR-4 boards with the acetone/abs mixture (be sure to use a natural brush-horsehair or China bristle). Attach the FR-4 board and preheat for at least 15 min. I have had very good results with this technique so far (i.e. no warping or lifting on the corners like I was experiencing with a plain FR-4 board). I also built a "heat shield" out of a liquor case box to retain the heat (cut holes/slots where needed for the reel/line and "viewports" sealed with clear packing tape).

Honest reviews on Afinia 3D Printer H-Series

This printer falls very short of the mark. Unless you are a die-hard tinkerer who enjoys hours and hours of minute adjustments, failed prints, and concocting your own chemical slurries, stay very far away from this printer.

I have to say that the standards expressed in other reviews are shockingly low. 5 stars for a printer that warps every part over 3 inches? That can only be corrected by slathering a highly toxic and flammable substance all over the $24/pop base plates?

A printer should just work. I have had the pleasure of working with printers that do just this, both in ABS and PLA. Here are some of the more egregious design flaws in this printer.

A print platform that falls with no padding/protection if you turn off the machine.

A set of platform adjustment screws that get just as hot as the platform making later adjustments impossible.

A standard set of print sheets/bases that warp like crazy.

Software that regularly crashes while sending print jobs to the printer.

Software that makes up its own terminology for no-good-reason (e.g. "unload" rather than "delete").

Incomprehensible error messages.

You get the picture. This is not a friendly, simple device. While it may be better than others out there, it simply does not reach a level where it can be called "good."

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Afinia 3D Printer H-Series

I have been using 3D printing for many years. I've owned one of these printers (previously called an "Up! printer) for 2 years. I upgraded it to the newest version. For every 2 prints that work, one fails, although this may have been partially due to using inferior old plastic filament. As a result I often find myself endlessly leveling and calibrating the platform and/or unclogging the nozzle. In addition, the building envelope is small about the size of a coffee cup. Several printers with larger builds are now on the market.

I`d say that most of these consumer grade printers are not quite there yet. Since another professional level 3d printer company still has the patent for a heated enclosed printing environment (important, if not essential for ABS plastic, which will last far longer than the PLA corn starch material), warping and splitting are commonplace. I'd wait awhile before purchasing a 3D printer.

That said, I have read that this is rated as one of the better consumer grade 3D printers on the market.

I was deciding between these or classic wooden blocks like I had when I was a kid. The reviews for a lot of the wooden blocks said they were made from soft wood that the babies could bite into and that the paint would come off when the blocks were sucked/chewed on. They were also very small. This is nothing like the blocks I had, so I went with these plastic stackable blocks and am very pleased with my choice. They are big and light, easy for my 17 month old to handle. They both stack easily and come apart easily, so my little girl does not get frustrated. She likes to stack them up tall, and when they eventually fall or get knocked over, they don't hurt if you get hit by them. The colors are bright, the letters easy to read and recognize for my baby, and the pictures are very cute. These are highly recommended. And considering the price for how many pieces you get, these are a fantastic alternative to beginner legos, which I also considered until I saw the price. I'll get her legos when she's old enough to really start building better. Save your money when it comes to the duplos.

These alphabet blocks are wonderful. They stack very easily, like lego blocks. They are a much better alternative to the traditional wooden cube blocks with the alphabet.

My DS, who just turned two in Aug, had a blast stacking these blocks and they will help with his learning as well. Highly recommend as a first block for babies! They are brightly colored and lightweight for baby to handle.

Best Deals for Fisher-Price Little People Builders Stack 'n Learn Alphabet Blocks

My son just received these blocks for Christmas and overall they are nice blocks. He already has some Little People toys and I like the fact that these blocks work with the others. My only complaint is that there are no long blocks in the collection. All my son can do is build stacks of blocks. There are no rectangular blocks to allow for building structures or tunnels or anything but straight towers. They don't really allow for a lot of creativity so I don't understand the purpose of them. Sorry.

Honest reviews on Fisher-Price Little People Builders Stack 'n Learn Alphabet Blocks

We bought this for our 16 month old son. The blocks are durable the only thing is they don't stay together. He can stack the blocks but there is no room for creativity as we thought these blocks would lock together, like Legos. So we mostly have a room filled with scattered blocks.

I probably should have thought a bit more before getting this product. I saw it, saw letters and different colors, and just thought this would be a good idea. Not so much though. All of these different blocks stack my locking into either the one on top or below it kind of like legos, but some won't click together at all because its too loose of a connection. All of the letter blocks are the same size, so they only stack up. Meaning, you can't use them to try to build any kind of shape or do anything really creative with them. They may be great to work on colors or letters, but that said there are tons of products out there that work on colors and letters. All in all, I would suggest getting actual blocks instead of this.
