Cheap Melissa & Doug Taffy Sea Turtle Net
I've had my Taffy Sea Turtle Net for several months now. I wasn't looking for a toy, which is why I didn't rate that aspect highly. I was looking for a good, strong net in which to catch the toads that occasionally find their way into my walled-in backyard. My concern is that one of my dogs might bite onto a Bufo Toad, and get poisoned. With this handy net, I can scoop up even a very large toad and deposit it in a nearby wooded area. I've had no problems with rips in the material, and it looks like a solidly built net and pole that should last me a long time. I certainly recommend it for toad catching!

Reviews of 11X-80X Inspection Zoom Monocular Microscope w/ Coaxial Light

I got this scope because it has coaxial illumination (good for inspecting silicon chips) and because it offers one of the widest fields of view when zoomed out. I got it with a 3MP camera (low pixel count = high light sensitivity, fast fps, and reasonable match for optical capability) instead of the eyepiece. With that setup, I can photograph an area as large as 15*20mm easily in great quality. My only disappointment was that the coaxial illumination was a bit dim, consisting of four small white LEDs. The camera auto-gain will compensate for the dim illumination, but the exposure time will default to 350ms, meaning you only get a screen refresh rate of around 3 fps, and moving your specimen will blur and delay the image noticeably. So I took the LED light source apart (easily done) and installed a 1W Luxeon type diffuse white LED with much more light output (that installation is the slightly more difficult part). Now I can cruise the sample much more quickly at ~60ms exposure times (around 16 fps). My recommendation to Amscope is: Use a brighter LED in your coaxial light source, and the scope will be much better. Overall, a great microscope, and looking at a big monitor is also very comfortable compared to peering through an eyepices. Very nice buy for the price.

Cheap Learning Resources Time Tracker Mini
I purchased this item to help my Autistic son with waiting. The biggest draw back is that it can ONLY be set in 5 minute incriments. The dial does not move to indicate how much time is left. And if the start button is pushed more than once (Kids) it resets the timer. I never saw the light change to yellow. Only blink red when time was almost up. Hope this helps. I am returning it to the store.
The green band sets your total time. If you only want 5 min then the timer will go from green directly to red after 5 min no yellow. For 15 min, the green band is on 15, etc.
That's not so bad, I would have thought that the green band set the time of the green light but nope, green band is the total time.
The yellow band sets the duration of the green light. So illogical, but if you want 10 min of green and 5 min of yellow you have to set the green band to 15 and the yellow one to 10. Rather than the yellow band setting the duration of the yellow light, you have to do the math and subtract the green band which is really the total time from the yellow band which is really the green light to get the yellow time. Confused? Yep, we were too.
I hope this helps lessen the confusion, it really is a great tool and works wonders, but is so frustratingly illogical to use. I'm happy to have it but wish it were more intuitive.
Agree I wish it wasn't automatically 5 minute increments but it works great for us. The reviews I read for the original time tracker seemed like it was hard to program but this one is a piece of cake. Definitely recommend!!

We purchased the Mini due to other reviewers commenting on how confusing the larger one was to program. We wanted the timer for our son for this morning school routine (dressing, eating, etc). Now let me say that I am an engineer and reasonably good at problem solving. However, this timer, which has only a green and yellow adjuster really perplexed me for about a week. I eventually sat down with a stop watch to figure this thing out because it does not come with directions. For all of the other parents out there, here is how it works.The green band sets your total time. If you only want 5 min then the timer will go from green directly to red after 5 min no yellow. This timer is very easy to set. Simply twist the green band to the amount of total time that the timer will run, and twist the yellow band to how long after the timer starts that you would like it to show the yellow warning light. The volume is adjustable, which is perfect for a loud/busy classroom or a quiet space such as the library. One of my students does fabulous with transitions when he can see the lights change.... when it turns to yellow, he'll tell me that he only has a little left, and when it turns red, he just gets up and follows the group. Though the Time Tracker Mini seems to do exactly what it's supposed to, it doesn't do the one thing I wanted it to do. It DOES count down the time and at the alotted setting, the yellow warning light turns on to indicate the "5 minute warning" or whatever you set the yellow dial to. I wish it counted down the time so that, as the adult, I would know EXACTLY how much time is left. My son loves it though. I would suggest on the next update of this product to have it show how much time is left. We were constantly struggling to get our 3 boys ready in the morning. I got so sick of reminding them to get dressed for 45 minutes straight! Now we set the timer, with a warning when there is 5 minutes left, and they are on their own. If the timer is up before they are ready, they will go to bed 15 minutes earlier that night since they are obviously too tired to get dressed. We do the same for breakfast when the timer goes off, breakfast is over. You can mess around all you want but you're going to be awfully hungry until lunch.Agree I wish it wasn't automatically 5 minute increments but it works great for us. Hexbug Bridge Battle Set Review
I picked these up from Target. Let me tell you their prices, because some online ones (including, sadly Amazon, atm) are really, really off:
-Habitat: $30, included THREE hex arenas, THREE straight pieces, TWO curved ones, and, most importantly TWO nano bugs! Don't pay more than $30 for it, I've seen it on Amazon for nearly twice that.
-Starter set: $12, included ONE hex arena, TWO curved pieces, ONE nano bug.
-Single nano bug: $8.
I'd *highly* recommend the habitat set, it's the BEST value by far, assuming you don't get a horrible online price.
The starter set is not a bad deal, but it's not as much fun as the habitat.
The individual nano bugs are kind of expensive, and no way to start. Without SOME sort of habitat pieces, you're just chasing this thing around the room. But that may be fun too!
So.... what are these things?
I thought they were little robots. Turns out this is generally what HEXBUGs are, but they've been scaling them down to simpler and simpler things.
These things are completely dumb, no sensors at all. But the design is brilliant.
They have little curved rubber legs that don't move. They have an on switch. When you turn then on, they vibrate. That's it.
But that's all that's needed. They SHOOT across a flat surface, and when they hit a wall, they shoot off at at angle. They even right themselves if they are on their side or back. It's an elegant design. The result is something that looks and behaves amazingly similar to a cockroach, but simply consists of a vibrator (motor with weight), battery, and rubber legs. That's it!
The shapes of the case allows it to both bounce off of walls and right to themselves. They are unstoppable.
I don't know how long the battery lasts, but you can replace it.
My 2 year old LOVES them. He can easily turn them on or off, and he can't (short of immersing one in water) hurt them. He's given each of them names and attaches a lot of personality to them, he acts like they're pets. They are a good size for him, no moving parts to break. It's actually a brilliant little toy.
I kind of want to turn the habitat into a gambling game... roll a couple of them into a habitat (like dice) and first one to exit the open door wins. They are surprisingly entertaining.
If it doesn't have a large ORANGE piece, then IT IS *NOT* THE BRIDGE BATTLE! The MSRP of the Bridge Battle Playset is $39.99. We finally had to buy it at Target to make sure we got the right thing because Amazon doesn't stand behind third-party sales the way they do their own products.
Once again, the Habitat set MSRP is $29.99 and is available locally for that price.
DO NOT BUY A BRIDGE BATTLE SET THAT DOESN'T HAVE AN ORANGE ***BATTLE BRIDGE***.
My son's only complaint is that the pieces are somewhat difficult to engage and disengage. But once he got the hang of it, it was OK.
Comes with 2 hexabugs. It is more fun to have more than one hexabugs. We already have 1 green, and then 2 more that came with this set. Ours came with a blue and a rare black bug.
You can also enjoy the bugs even sans the habitat. They are so fun to release them on the wild. Let them run around the table or the hardwood floor. (They don't move as much on carpets). Just watch Youtube videos, they have tons of them. It is like a geek toy, your personal microbot.
The batteries are cheap if you search online. 20 pieces for a few bucks. Each bug uses only 1 battery and you will need a watch type screwdriver to replace it.
Apparently this set has two "ultra rare" bugs (the white and black one) that only larger sets come with so yay for adding to your kid's collection.
Do yourself a favor and tack on a large pack of button batteries to your order if you plan on playing with these for more than a day or two.

I put this set together for my little nephew (3 years old) and he loved the little vibrating bugs. He quickly bored with it, as did I, when you realize that the "battle" is really just a matter of which bug will fall off the orange disc on its own accord. The bugs themselves seem fairly durable with high grade silicone for the body and a buff inner vibrator/battery compartment. The track snaps together fairly easily but the legs that hold up the upper levels are very wimpy and wouldn't last a solid play session with younger kids.Apparently this set has two "ultra rare" bugs (the white and black one) that only larger sets come with so yay for adding to your kid's collection.

Cheap Teaching Poster Set: Geology-Rocks and Minerals; no. MC-P212
These posters are rugged and informational. I work with 8th graders in a Middle School, and these posters have just enough information to be a great resource. The additional teaching materials are a bonus.i hung these up in my classroom and it seems to help the kids with understanding the types of rocks that form.

My six yr old granddaughter got the computer keyboard for the COMPUTER COOL SCHOOL last Christmas with a couple of play disks. She had really enjoyed playing with it so I decided to purchase this disk for her birthday. She loves it. I don't think she has onpened any of her other COOL SCHOOL disks since she received it. The disk is very durable and comes in its own plastic case. The WonderPets are so lifelike and the sounds so real that I don't mind watching (I'd like to play.) This game is a GREAT way to get your child to do something that is not only entertaining, but educational as well. Not to mention, it'll give you some free time to cook, clean, or do whatever needs to be done while your child is busy learning new things and occupying his/her time by "exploring" with the Wonder Pets!! The wonder Pets have been my son's favorite characters since he was just a baby, and he's got every Wonder Pets toy known to man, so it was good to give him something for his birthday that teaches him new things, and that he's REALLY excited to play! Review of Wee Gallery Farm Art Cards for Baby

These cards are great! The cardboard they are printed on is sturdyeasy for little hands to hold and durable. The characters are cute and I like that they have the name of each animal. I wish I would have bought them sooner. My daughter is 5 months now and she can see colors clearly. Maybe if I would've gotten them ealier when they are attracted to black/white patterns, she wouldve enjoyed them more. Saving them for when she is older. We got these cards as a baby shower gift, and they are wonderful! They come in a nice box and are very high quality. My baby started paying attention to them very early pretty much at the age when you think babies don't really look at things. He just loved looking at them, and later on would coo excitedly at his favourite ones. I also own a "Hello, Animals" book, and it is nowhere near Wee Gallery by design sophistication and quality. For the hours of entertainment these cards provide, they are definitely worth the price. Cheap VTech Preschool Learning Adventure Learning Globe
My 5 year old loves it and is learning from it. He plays with it a lot. My 3 year old has no interest in it. I think it is hard for a 3 year old to coordinate the hand control for this toy.
He has not grown tired of it after a few weeks. He got a lot of gifts this holiday season, and this is probably his favorite one.

It's possible that this toy is both fun and educational, but we wouldn't know because it doesn't work. I left another review, which, strangely, is missing now. This was my son's first request for Christmas, and it was a big disappointment. We even tried brand new batteries which didn't help. The plane gets stuck--originally just over the equator, and needed a little manual help, but minutes later was getting stuck everywhere. We'll let you know what the company (through Amazon) does to help. But now I have to find the box, pack it, print the receipt and shipping label, and bring it to UPS. Review of Learning Resources Giant Magnetic Plant Cell (LER6038)
We absolutely love this product! We received it to review for our 5th/6th grade classroom and it is fantastic. It is brightly colored and large enough so that the students in the back of the room can easily see the various parts of the cell. It stores in a nice flat box and is not bulky to keep around. The parts of the cell are very thick so they are easy to grab off of the white board. It comes with an easy to use guide. Definitely recommend it.

As for leaving a 5 star rating....that's based on how the order was handled. Shipping was very quick and price was very reasonable, the best actually..should have bought both that were offered at the time..As for the item itself..these are all built pretty much the same,
Once the top strips out.. you are in trouble, so .you must always take care as to not to apply to much pressure on the eyepiece. All in all, they do last some time, my first is still usable even with it being stripped..I just use an over sized rubber band to apply pressure down on the eyepiece. I would say if you do a lot of this type of photography..you should always have 2.

I went through all kinds gyrations trying to figure an easy way to put close up pictures from my microscope to my computer. The answer was so simple... Just take a shot through the eyepiece using the simple adapter clamp. No frills, just does what it is supposed to.Monday, September 29, 2014
Silly Starters Write-Abouts, 4-8 Review
I got this book for my 10 yr old homeschooling son, who really dislikes writing. Since receiving it he has been enthusiastically filling up a daily journal with ideas started by this book! The book is getting a little worn with all the flipping back and forth to see the silly combinations but it still serves its purpose just fine. I would highly recommend it to all parents/teachers for ways to get even the less-than-enthusiastic writers going! I am actually ordering several of the other books in this series today to get a little more variety in writing types.

What is the Main Idea? Fun Deck with Secret Decoder - Super Duper Review
What is the Main Idea Super Fun Deck with Super Duper Secret Decoder it is designed for grades 3-8, and ages 8 & up. This game is designed to find the main idea in the story. The answers include supporting details and they have to find the MAIN IDEA. We stayed at level one on this game. My daughter would second guess herself on some of the answers. The main idea tends to be a little difficult for early readers and the nice part about this game is the passages are short so they are able to go back and reread the passage to help them find the answer.

Nature Series: Science on a Garden Adventure Reviews
Our son received this for Christmas 2010 and he absolutely loved it. He was 6.5 at the time but still talks about it a year later. It is a quality kit with very clear instructions in a full size full color book plus a half size one to record observations. I highly recommend this kit!Loved this science kit easy to follow along and very little prep in using with a small group of kids. The kids (ages 4 to 8) loved the whole experience.
