Its use may not have much grandeur but if the fact that you can own a 400+ million year old fossil tickles your curiosity then go ahead and order. This fossil is very clear and easy to tell exactly what you're looking at, the matrix around it (to me at least) provides a greater sense of authenticity, and if you're prone to scientific or philosophical meditation/introspection/whatever you want to call your day dreaming, contemplating this little fossil can help get you on some interesting topics. All in all if you're a nerd like me or you know a science loving nerd, this fossil is a great find.

My nephew is 6 and loves the weather. His favorite "job" in kindergarten is to be the meteorologist for the week. They track how many days are rainy, sunny, etc. For his birthday, we gave him this gift, and it was his favorite birthday gift. Now he can do be the meteorologist at home too! They might get it laminated so that it will last longer.

Hexbug Bridge Battle Set Review

Hexbug Bridge Battle Set
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars
Buy Now
I picked these up from Target. Let me tell you their prices, because some online ones (including, sadly Amazon, atm) are really, really off:

-Habitat: $30, included THREE hex arenas, THREE straight pieces, TWO curved ones, and, most importantly TWO nano bugs! Don't pay more than $30 for it, I've seen it on Amazon for nearly twice that.

-Starter set: $12, included ONE hex arena, TWO curved pieces, ONE nano bug.

-Single nano bug: $8.

I'd *highly* recommend the habitat set, it's the BEST value by far, assuming you don't get a horrible online price.

The starter set is not a bad deal, but it's not as much fun as the habitat.

The individual nano bugs are kind of expensive, and no way to start. Without SOME sort of habitat pieces, you're just chasing this thing around the room. But that may be fun too!

So.... what are these things?

I thought they were little robots. Turns out this is generally what HEXBUGs are, but they've been scaling them down to simpler and simpler things.

These things are completely dumb, no sensors at all. But the design is brilliant.

They have little curved rubber legs that don't move. They have an on switch. When you turn then on, they vibrate. That's it.

But that's all that's needed. They SHOOT across a flat surface, and when they hit a wall, they shoot off at at angle. They even right themselves if they are on their side or back. It's an elegant design. The result is something that looks and behaves amazingly similar to a cockroach, but simply consists of a vibrator (motor with weight), battery, and rubber legs. That's it!

The shapes of the case allows it to both bounce off of walls and right to themselves. They are unstoppable.

I don't know how long the battery lasts, but you can replace it.

My 2 year old LOVES them. He can easily turn them on or off, and he can't (short of immersing one in water) hurt them. He's given each of them names and attaches a lot of personality to them, he acts like they're pets. They are a good size for him, no moving parts to break. It's actually a brilliant little toy.

I kind of want to turn the habitat into a gambling game... roll a couple of them into a habitat (like dice) and first one to exit the open door wins. They are surprisingly entertaining.

Once again, another seller on Amazon advertises the more expensive set and is selling the cheaper set. That's very dishonest, at best, but Amazon didn't publish my last review where I used stronger language. This is the third different company that I've seen selling it, so something fishy is going on, but the consistent thing is describing the more expensive set.

If it doesn't have a large ORANGE piece, then IT IS *NOT* THE BRIDGE BATTLE! The MSRP of the Bridge Battle Playset is $39.99. We finally had to buy it at Target to make sure we got the right thing because Amazon doesn't stand behind third-party sales the way they do their own products.

Once again, the Habitat set MSRP is $29.99 and is available locally for that price.

DO NOT BUY A BRIDGE BATTLE SET THAT DOESN'T HAVE AN ORANGE ***BATTLE BRIDGE***.

$59! on sale for $30 at ToysRUs, regular price is $35, wow this is really expensive over priced even for Amazon. Check before you buy this item.....

Honest reviews on Hexbug Bridge Battle Set

Got this for my 6 year-old. The habitat actually surprised me, I thought they are just cheap pieces of tubes and little hexagon arenas. They are cleverly thought out and well built. The hexagons have gates that you can close or open on 6 sides and you can interconnect them in so many ways.

My son's only complaint is that the pieces are somewhat difficult to engage and disengage. But once he got the hang of it, it was OK.

Comes with 2 hexabugs. It is more fun to have more than one hexabugs. We already have 1 green, and then 2 more that came with this set. Ours came with a blue and a rare black bug.

You can also enjoy the bugs even sans the habitat. They are so fun to release them on the wild. Let them run around the table or the hardwood floor. (They don't move as much on carpets). Just watch Youtube videos, they have tons of them. It is like a geek toy, your personal microbot.

The batteries are cheap if you search online. 20 pieces for a few bucks. Each bug uses only 1 battery and you will need a watch type screwdriver to replace it.

I put this set together for my little nephew (3 years old) and he loved the little vibrating bugs. He quickly bored with it, as did I, when you realize that the "battle" is really just a matter of which bug will fall off the orange disc on its own accord. The bugs themselves seem fairly durable with high grade silicone for the body and a buff inner vibrator/battery compartment. The track snaps together fairly easily but the legs that hold up the upper levels are very wimpy and wouldn't last a solid play session with younger kids.

Apparently this set has two "ultra rare" bugs (the white and black one) that only larger sets come with so yay for adding to your kid's collection.

Do yourself a favor and tack on a large pack of button batteries to your order if you plan on playing with these for more than a day or two.

Best Solar Powered Dancing Bear Deals

Solar Powered Dancing Bear
Customer Ratings: 5 stars

This dancing bear is very cute and works (dances) very well. I have him on my desk where the only light is a small lamp that lights the computer key board. The bear's head and body swivel back and forth. I bought this dancing bear and three other dancing flowers to give as gifts. The flowers are a big disappointment. When placed in the same area as the bear they hardly move at all. When placed in direct sunlight, the flowers hardly move at all. Synopsis: the bear is great --go buy one, but forget the flowers --they're a waste of money.

As with other solar-powered novelty items, this figure serves its purpose well. It is a zero-maintenance, pleasant distraction. We have a collection of these In the window of our store, and customers continually remark about how "cute" they are. Some require more light than others to operate, but in direct sunlight they all move energetically. We've found that the ones with the smaller bases (perhaps they are from the same manufacturer) require the least amount of light to actually move, and the bear falls into that category.

Its fun to watch other peoples faces when they see the bear danceing.and to see little children laugh and smile is lots of fun too.

We ordered two of these kits for 7-9 year olds as a first rocketry project. We chose this particular kit for a few reasons: It uses a full size standard engine (A-C), not the half engines. It uses traditional building techniques utilizing white glue, not snap together plastic parts. The fin assembly is a single peice molded plastic. The rocket is completely white, allowing our scouts to decorate them with Sharpie Markers.

The kit may be a little hard for a large group of kids ages 7-9. Adults prebuilt the engine blocks and attached the launch lugs before giving them to the kids. The rest was right on the money.

The parts of this kit are high quality. Kudos to Estes.

(#1 REVIEWER)

The Bael Decor 16" hand held telescope is of limited value as a telescope but is quite an attractive piece for a nautical themed decor or as an accent piece in your home. It is largely brass construction with stitched leather accents.

Collapsed, the telescope is about 6.25 inches in length and when fully extended is 16 inches long.

As a telescope it is not too useful. I notice quite a bit of distortion around the perimeter of the lens. The field of view is very narrow. This type of telescope is focused by manually moving the eyepiece in or out of the barrel. And people with glasses will have a more difficult time trying to use it.

As an accent piece, it is quite nice. The rosewood box that is used for storing the telescope is quite attractive and has a felt lining on the top and bottom.

I was provided a complimentary sample for testing and review. If you have any questions about the telescope please leave me a comment and I'd be happy to try to answer.

I bought this toy for my newborn daughter because I thought it was simply the cutest toy. She is now 9 months old and loves it. Her favorite is the crinkly crab but the jangly fish, jingly starfish, and squeaky oyster are fun too. She loves to take them out after I put them in. The clear bowl is just plastic so the toy is extremely portable to take along with you. The instructions say surface wash but I tried washing the creatures in the washing machine (I used one of those mesh bags) and they came out just as perfect as when they went in. This toy is well worth the money. Your child will get lots of use out of it and I can just see future use as a pretend pet.

How much fun can a cloth fish bowl give you and your baby? LOTS! Jaden is 8 months old and he loves this toy. I love it too! Jaden loves to empty the bowl, bring the bowl up to his face then look through the plastic part-it cracks him up everytime. Then he will fill the bowl back up with his sea friends and put it back to his face! It is a great cause and effect toy! He also loves to watch me put the friends in and take them out. This toy is a good way to sooth a fussy baby.

My son received this fish bowl when he was about 4 months old. He is now 9 months. He chews on the crab for hours, but other than that not much else. I feel that this is an expensive teething toy.

I like the variety of color and the different textures of fabric the toy offers.

Geomag Kids Color - 110 pieces

This system is just a lot of fun. When you build something (and it doesn't have to be like a building), you have a whole new perspective on where the forces go: One wrong move and it collapses. On the other hand, when you build a structure like the star shown here, it is durable enough to hand--from other geomags, of course. The magnets and spheres all fit together easily, but you find after a while that the direction that you put the bars matters. And, being magnets, they sometimes move on their own...

There are also small panels available in other sets, which make more stable structures.

Both I and my granddaughter (she is 5) like it, so I think that the age given of 3 yrs. to 15 is a little restrictive. Actually, I don't think that most kids would get much out of it until they are 5 or so, but after that, I can't picture an upper age. There is a website at the manufacturer's that has ideas to pursue (if you have thousands of parts). I enjoyed it enough to order more--it may be addictive--but even with only a hundred pieces, you can build some fun structure. .

Also, if you have children who put things in their mouths (either from age or habit), all the small parts could be a problem.

This is a great toy, both educational and just plain fun.

My 5 year old daughter is a reluctant reader. LOVES her books, but gets frustrated because wants to know how to read without the learning process. I try to find fun and different things to do with her so she doesn't get bored. She got this from my mother as a gift and she really liked it. She likes opening the drawers and pulling out the cards which have all different levels.(beginning consonant sounds, ending sounds and vowel sounds) The cards have Crepe Rubber Letters to put on the cards. She lays them all out on her bedroom floor and really tries to sound out the words. So if she's learning and having fun....I LOVE IT.

I got this model mostly because it looked like it had a good brainstem on it, and it was next to impossible to find an affordable brainstem model. I'm going to review the brain and head sections separately as a restult of this.

Brain= whole brain view is very good. You can see the gyri clearly and the brain anatomical relationships are preserved. The cerbellum is brown with less delineation of the vermis than I"m used to seeing, but it's not a very big deal, they just kinda drew a line on either side of it. On the exterior of the brain are the arteries. There are no meninges present. Looking at the ventral surface of the whole brain you can see the olfactory tract. The brainstem has a very obvious pons with the appropriate nerves coming out. They aren't all super clear but that's just like the real brainstem:) On pulling the brain apart you cut the 1/2 brain view. You can see the cerebellar tree appearance. The corpus callosum, lateral, 3rd, 4th ventricle, and cerbral aqueduct are there. It requires some imagination. Mamillary bodies and Pineal gland were not super evident. I think I do see something I'd call the superior and inferior colliculus. From this view you can see most of the normal sulci. The one lobe that doesn't seem completely right is the occipital lobe. I think this is because one of the attachements happens here, but I do not feel the calcarine fissure, and thus the ability to delineate the lingual lobe is adequate. I'll probably draw my own in with a permanent marker.

Overall this is a good brain model for what I wanted not fantastic, but it also wasn't super expensive,

Now onto the rest of the head. I also find it okay there are no nerves, but they might make it too busy. There are lots of the arteries and veins, and several muscles detailed. Unvortunately you can only pull of the sternocleidomastoid muscle on both sides and the zygomatic arch. You can Also pull out and insert the left eye and it has awesome muscles on it along with a lacrimal gland.

Most of the oral internal anatomy is also there. I'm not very good at identifying it perfectly, but I do see the concha which is one of my weak points.. Ah and I just noticed, I think it has a circle of willis lined out on the inside of the skull when you push it together.

From the vertebrae back it is solid, but with differing textures.

The esophagus and trachea are also visible with the epiglottis more visible on the left side. On the right side you can see the main tongue muscle, and on the left some of the glands. Overall I'm happy with this purchase. I would have preferred it to have more detachable muscles, especially the buccinator, but you can trace most of the arteries. My other big complaint is that there is not any thing under the sternocleidomastoid. I would have like to pull it off and maybe have a carotid sheath underneath it. YOu can see the trachea form the outside and it could help you learn how to distinuish that anatomy.

This is a good model for helping reinforce concepts you have already learned, but I would not recommend it as a primary study source due to its lack of nerves. It has the big relationships on it, and an amazing amount of detail for the price. You will not be able to use the skull to trace the nerves through the foramen.

I hope this helps some people!! Also it's fairly stable, and would probably be okay with curious little kids. It does have small parts, I'd probably take the eyeball and ear away before letting a younger child explor it.

I bought this to help with my anatomy class and it is way too small to be of use in learning the bones, muscles, vessels and nerves of the head and neck. It is very small and really is an educational toy for kids, not a model of use to a college student. I was hoping to save some money since the "real" models are expensive, but this ended up being a waste entirely.

Best Deals for 4D Vision Human Head Anatomy Model

It's smallish (size of a big fist), a little over-priced, but solidly made with hard molded plastic and some detail.

I wish it was a little larger and had more removable parts but it's quite educational if you use it to learn the various bones and tissues and brain parts of nature's most complex organ: the human head.

All ages can learn a little more about the human head in this tactile way but it makes an especially nice gift for young curious minds (or for a doctor's desk!) who can easily take apart and reassemble the parts to learn a little head anatomy.

Recommended for those looking for a thought-provoking, non-electronic and curious gift.

Honest reviews on 4D Vision Human Head Anatomy Model

The anatomy model of the human head is colorful and will definitley serve the purpose of teaching human anatomy to our adult learners. Most of our adult learners are visual and if they can see it and touch it, they can retain the image. Not the highest end product, but, of course we didn't pay a high-end price. Thanks to Amazon for carrying such a range of educational tools.

I never realized on the description it saying anything about the soft blocks having the crinkle material on them. These blocks have various textures that make them unlike most other soft blocks. Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program With a variety of sounds and 'activities', this toy seems most appropriate for 6m-18m age, instead of upto 36m as stated by the manufacturer. The toy is incredibly easy to set up and has intuitive settings for volume control and learning modes. The fairly short stature of the toy may make this unsuitable for most kids over 1 year old. My 18 month old now uses this as "strength training" equipment trying to lift it and walk around.

One may need to compare it to Baby Einstein Discovering Music Activity Table to see which size may be more suitable for your child. Regardless with a variety of interactions with the various animal characters a particularly verbal hippo and some catchy tunes, this is likely to be a good value for 6m-18m and an OK value for 18m-24m. I don't see the toy being able to sustain interest through 36m age group as the manufacturer recommends.

This table toy is fun with seven activity centers. My daughter's favorite is the peekaboo Hippo. The table is smaller than it appears in photos and very short. It looks more stable than it actually is. The plastic legs are made of flimsy plastic. I rate it high for the activities and music but we will use it without the legs attached due to its height and instability.

Pros:

-Cute zoo animals.

-Fun learning activities for colors, ABCs, Shapes, and numbers.

-Super easy assembly. Just attach the removable legs.

-Musical songs to help in learning shapes and colors.

Cons:

-Table is very short for children over one year old. Stands only 12" tall with legs attached.

-Must use on carpet since there is no rubber footing for use on wood or laminate floors it is unstable and slides around the room.

Best Deals for LeapFrog Animal Adventure Learning Table

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is a really sweet toy with lots of opportunities to play. One of the nice things about it is that it's so compact in size. The legs can be kept off (and also come off really easily), and without them it takes up a lot less space than some other toys.

From the write-up online, it might be difficult to tell what the toy does, so I'll try to explain some of the things that it does. First, there are two settings that the entire toy can be put on--either music or ABC (verbal learning). There are several features, though a couple are not connected to anything electronically. The features are:

1) An open plastic "book" with two page spreads. On the music setting, these do the ABCs or 123s songs. On the ABC setting, they talk about things like favorite numbers or letters. From this part of the board, it seems that the speaker (when using the toy) is the giraffe pictured by the book.

2) Going clockwise, next there's a hippo's head. Open the mouth--and there's a mirror! On the ABC setting the hippo does things like opposites--saying "open" and "closed," "hello" and "bye-bye." The music setting does a song about hippos, and various sounds.

3) Next is a tiger with a trumpet. The musical note is the action item here--it can be slid left or right. The trumpet on the ABC setting says opposites--"right" and "left," "loud" and "quiet," etc. On the music setting, there are things like trumpet sounds.

4) Next is a non-electronic guitar. This can be turned by grabbing the knob or sticking a little finger in the hole. As it turns, it makes a clicking, cranking sound.

5) The piano-like buttons are a favorite. On the music setting, they do short little beats. When the toy is set on ABC, they active a voice that says their numbers or colors.

6) Here comes another non-electronic part! The fish roller is really cute. It has a clear roller wheel in it. The wheel contains little plastic balls that make sounds when the wheel is rotated.

7) The center drum is the main attraction. It lights up and interacts with certain parts on the rest of the board (including the piano keys and book feature). It contains four lights: orange is a circle, red is a square, green is a triangle, and yellow is a star. It's touch-activated and thus has its own features, as well. When tapped on the music setting, it encourages drumming a slow beat to music. On the verbal learning setting (ABC), there are lessons about colors, shapes, and lights being on or off.

From a baby's point of view: The most fun feature is the three buttons (which look like a piano, but don't really play musical notes) set on the music setting. They are easy to push. The center section is also interesting. The music setting is more fun than the learning one (of course!).

From an adult's point of view, there's just one thing I don't like about this toy, and that's that it interrupts itself. I can understand this being a setting/option (though it's not), since it might be annoying if you have to listen to the ABC song a million times in a row and not be able to stop it if a baby keeps using the same feature over and over. But the way the toy works, it's almost like it's fighting with itself, for lack of a better way to explain it. Babies like to bang on things, and the toy generally doesn't play out a whole song or statement if it gets interrupted by another touch or hit. So, for example, let's say that the ABC song is playing. A baby doesn't know not to hit a different button, and thus likely won't let the song play in full. Playing with another feature on the toy can cause the previous one to stop. It's still a really nice play set, though, and I most appreciate how they fit so much into a small size!

Honest reviews on LeapFrog Animal Adventure Learning Table

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I love many of Leapfrog's products, but definitely not this one. First of all, the claim that it has over 100 songs and activities is sorely overstated my estimate would be that it has about 10 songs and 7 activities. The only activities it has are turning the guitar strings by the monkey, sliding the music note back and forth to hear opposites/horn sounds, lifting the hippo's face to see the mirror, turning the page on the 1 page book, spinning the fish wheel, pushing one of three piano keys, and tapping the drum in the center.

The drum in the center where they can tap a shape to hear its color and shape name was nice but at 7 months my daughter doesn't have the strength required to make that work. As an adult, I have to smack the drum really hard to get it to work which is obviously a con and even when you tap one shape, it lights up a different one than you tapped. I was expecting more activities and was disappointed.

It has 2 modes which are music and learning and I do like the bright/attractive colors with the jungle theme. I did like the use of teaching the opposites. It was very easy to put together since you only have to attach the legs, but there's no way this toy could work for up to 36 months old as it claims. My daughter at 7 months already has to bend down to do the activities on the table so it's way too short. Also, it's not made very sturdy and the legs are very wobbly so you have to sit with your child while he or she stands to use it otherwise they could easily fall and take the toy down with him or her.

Given all of its drawbacks, which I was surprised about since Leapfrog always has great products, I wouldn't recommend this to a friend...or an enemy. Let's just say it's not worth the $35 it cost.

We love LeapFrog products and one of my favorite toys from my first son is this LeapFrog play table he got for his first Christmas. He played with that table probably every day and then my second son did and recently it has been Olivia. Well LeapFrog has just come out with a new table for kids 6-36 months.

The Animal Adventure Learning Table is basically a new and improved table than what we had. It features bright colors with just enough fun to keep kids entertained (and secretly leanring) and it comes in a round table format. Since Olivia is 14 months we started it out on its four legs but you can snap off the legs and use it on the floor, which is perfect for kids 6 months old. Actually our old LeapFrog table helped my little guys learn to stand and build up their confidence to walk since we started with them on the floor and then after awhile I snapped on the legs making them stand up with it to play. The legs on this table are seriously easy to snap off or take off (no tools required.) I wish I would have had this table before Olivia started walking, although I definitely see her playing with well into 3 years old (my 4 and 5 year old boys are even intrigued by it!)

Like I said earlier the table is round which to me gives it a modern design and the size is really big enough for two kids to play at. There are activities around the table but my daughters favorite is probably the drum in the center. She bangs on that thing like there is no tomorrow! The other activities involve tapping, turning, flipping, spinning, patting and pressing lots of playing basically! The table also goes to sleep after a period of one minute of inactivity and can be woken up by pushing any button.

About the different stations:

Giraffe: Flip the page for ABC or 1-2-3 activities

Hippo: Lift mouth for songs, mirror fun and peek-a-book play

Tiger: Slide music notes to learn about opposites and hear silly sounds

Monkey: Spin the guitar for motor skill fun

Piano: Explore music notes, melodies, numbers and colors

Fish: Bat the spinner to see it rattle and roll.

Drum: Tap for a musical light show and learn about shapes, numbers, colors and more!

Overall, this table has been a hit with my little one, she plays with it multiple times a day, everyday. She will play for a little bit, do something else and then go back to it. I love hearing all the different sounds and songs, much better than having the same old songs over and over! Oh and it does come with the required batteries so it is ready to go right out of the box.

I was sent this product to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
