I'm using these for my elementary Montessori classroom and I really like them. There are enough details that the children can use them classify animals by size, biome, class, etc.

My husband and I bought this when we were assembling our Zombie/Tidal Wave/Economic Collapse/Rapture/Apocalypse/3 Days 3 Ways kit so that we would be prepared when our energy bars, looting, and foraging options ran out. We live in Seattle, where sea and land birds are plentiful, and in the case of longer term disaster, I bet there will be a lot of small animals running around after awhile (everyone here owns a dog!).

So far we are very satisfied with this net, having practiced some throws in our living room. I'm confident that we could get a pigeon or seagull with ease. Not sure, but I think we may have to add a couple of weights to the outside just to make sure nothing flies away with it. We could get more distance out of our throws and have an easier time catching birds, although the ones around here are fat and lazy and usually trust humans. I wanna give a big thanks to all the park-bench-sitting bird-feeding old people out there. Y'all are definitely going to make our lives easier in our upcoming post-apocalyptic future!

The small size originally gave me pause but, upon reflection, it is actually one of the great advantages of this product. When we reach the point where we have nothing but our utility belts and backpacks as we make our way across a ruined cityscape, it can be easily wrapped up in a small bundle and attached to a snap loop for easy access and instant kills. A larger net would not afford this option so easily. We won't have the time to stop and wait for prey, or slowly stalk it through deserted parks while keeping a close eye out for zombies/mercenaries/vigilantes/mutants/gangs.

I am also pleased with the construction of the backyard safari net. It's made of rip-stop nylon, so I can be assured that stray beaks, claws, and teeth will be less likely to damage it with frequent use. This also means it won't be absorbing any messy fluids and will be very easy to wash and quickly dry, a must for those picky about sanitation, even while on the road searching out other humans who may have also survived.

I rated it lower for educational value because there wasn't much in the way of instructions included. A general guide to lizards, birds, and small mammals and some field dressing or cooking tips would have really been useful.

I also love the Lizard Hunter merit badge (so cute!) and have attached it to my backpack.

My children love this net. It seems very durable and easy to handle. They have captured many critters with it. From frogs, toads, salamanders, and snakes.

I have purchased just about every imaginable Summit Backyard Safari product for my oldest son (just turned 4 years old). He loves all of them. This one came with one of the patches, which my son LOVES for his safari vest, and he and his 2.5 year old brother had oodles of fun using it to "catch" each other. The netting seems heavy duty enough to withstand whatever my kids will throw it at, and the green rope that it is stretched around is nice and thick, but also gentle enough that it doesn't hurt them or any of my house when they are tossing it around. I really love all of this company's products. The kids have left them in the backyard in the rain/sprinklers, and although they are dirty, they are still perfectly usable. I recommend this product, and all of the Backyard Safari products for any family with inquisitive, creepy-crawly loving little ones. It encourages their interests in an age appropriate, and fun way.

I got this scope because it has coaxial illumination (good for inspecting silicon chips) and because it offers one of the widest fields of view when zoomed out. I got it with a 3MP camera (low pixel count = high light sensitivity, fast fps, and reasonable match for optical capability) instead of the eyepiece. With that setup, I can photograph an area as large as 15*20mm easily in great quality. My only disappointment was that the coaxial illumination was a bit dim, consisting of four small white LEDs. The camera auto-gain will compensate for the dim illumination, but the exposure time will default to 350ms, meaning you only get a screen refresh rate of around 3 fps, and moving your specimen will blur and delay the image noticeably. So I took the LED light source apart (easily done) and installed a 1W Luxeon type diffuse white LED with much more light output (that installation is the slightly more difficult part). Now I can cruise the sample much more quickly at ~60ms exposure times (around 16 fps). My recommendation to Amscope is: Use a brighter LED in your coaxial light source, and the scope will be much better. Overall, a great microscope, and looking at a big monitor is also very comfortable compared to peering through an eyepices. Very nice buy for the price.

A small book for children, particularly pre-schoolers, about a little boy who goes outside to play in the new fallen snow. It shows the simple joy and delight a child can have with newly fallen snow. I disagree with the comments of an earlier reviewer (Ms. Whittaker from Rush City, Minnesota, in 1998); the artwork is simple and direct because of the nature of the simple and quiet story and because the book is really aimed a pre-schoolers. Interestingly, the book won the 1963 Caldecott Medal for best illustration in a children's book. As far as I can tell, this book is the first winner which is centered about an African-American child. Hence, for this and other reasons, it is a book that should be on the shelf of any serious student of children literature.

This book is part of my standard baby shower gift package along with Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny. With very few words it manages to tell a very simple, yet very elegant story that young children can relate to. The pictures are beautiful and draw children further into the story. As an added bonus, the main character is African-American. Though it makes no difference to the story, it was important to me as a child reading this book 25 years ago to see a kid that looked like me in a book where race was not the focus of the plot, and is important to children of any race reading it today. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for any child of any race, boy or girl.

Best Deals for The Snowy Day - Big Book Edition

When "The Snowy Day" first came out, it was considered groundbreaking. Unprecedented. Here, at last, was a picture book in which the protagonist is black. It's not an overtly political book, mind you. Just a nice story about a kid in the city playing in the snow. Having heard about this story for a long time, I decided now was the moment to see how well this book has stood up over time. Ezra Jack Keats has long passed from idle picture book author to a somewhat god-like figure of the children's book world, so does this early work stand out even today? If it was introduced for the first time now, would it be considered as good as it is? Yes and no. The book is both a fabulous creation, and a very simple, very normal, tale that everyone on one level or another is familiar with.

In this book, Peter wakes up to discover that snow has covered the city in the night. Delighted, he pulls on his bright red (and now world known) snowsuit and plunges into a day of exploring and playing. He makes fun tracks, and hits snow off the branches of trees. He constructs a smiling snowman and slides down steep mountains of snow. At the end of the day his mother gets him out of his wet clothes and gives him a nice hot bath. The next morning the snow is still there, and an ecstatic Peter calls up a friend to do the whole day over again.

When I was a child I loved (and still do) stories that took place in the big cities. Keats never draws an inordinate amount of attention to Peter's surroundings. So while you won't see skyscrapers or taxi cabs, there's a distinctly urban feel to the lay of the land. The text is nice and easy for the youngsters to understand. As for the cut-outs, they're a delight to look at. Picture books featuring cut-outs may be remembered best as belonging to such artists as Eric Carle or Leo Lionni, but I consider Mr. Keats to be the granddaddy of the art form. Aside from the beauty of the landscaping in this pictures, I loved the papers used in the book. The section in which Peter sits on the snow, a snowball embedded on his chest, the black sky is a-swirl in greens, blues, and browns. When Peter slides down a snow covered embankment, the sky is then a delightful twisty series of white smoke-like curlicues. And Peter's home itself is eloquently rendered. From the wrought iron bed frame to the multicolored wallpaper and tiles that enhance the setting, the book is the best possible combination of elegance and realism.

If it came out today, "Snowy Day" wouldn't garner an overly enthusiastic response from publishers and critics. Which isn't to say that it's unworthy of the praise already received. As I've tried to show, the book is a wonderful amalgamation of text, pattern, and emotion. One of the finest books written for children, and a great evocative story.

Honest reviews on The Snowy Day - Big Book Edition

Exra Jack Keats' "A Snowy Day" is utterly timeless. As simple and charming and lovely today as it was when first published in 1963, it describes the small adventures of Peter, a city boy who wakes up one day to find the city entirely shrouded in snow. Peter does what any other red-blooded child would do: he puts on his snowsuit and runs outside. There he indulges in the age-old pursuits of making funny footprints in the snow, hitting a tree to watch the clumps of snow fall from it, making a snowman and snow angels, and sliding down a hill covered with snow. He even packs a snowball into his coat pocket.

The story is minimalist, as are the collages which illustrate the text, but the overall effect is delicious. Peter is a nimble expression of childhood vitality and play, and the pictures combine fabric, rubber stamps, what looks to be wallpaper, paper cut-outs, and fiber to very great effect. It's short, it's sweet, and it's simple--just like the best snowy days.

There aren't a lot of books that both a little child and a weary (wee bit bored, perhaps?) adult can both appreciate. This is one. Keats understands how young children think, how they look at the world. When the young protagonist Peter sits in the tub and thinks and thinks about the day's adventures, I'm struck by recognition both as a parent and as a former small child. I've seen that faraway expression, that serious working through.

The deftness of the language and the beautiful illustrations humble me. The focus of the story and the things that fascinate young Peter also fascinate my little boy, who is 19 months old. He asks me to read this to him at least three times a night. And it's so wonderfully done, I don't even mind.

Whether your child is white, black, purple, green or checkered, get this book. This is a wonderful book.

This globe is cool. My 9 year old daughter has it in her room, and loves to look at the different star constellations at night. During the day, the globe features are useful when she wants to be able to see different parts of world. After all, that is a globe's purpose, right? :-)

My one minor thing is that you don't want to leave the switch "on" during the day. It'll drain the battery very quickly. Other than that, fun product!

I was expecting more for this product, everything is fine except that it doesn't assemble very well, so the globe easily is not very stable. It has little cities on map. My son really enjoys watching this globe.

This was a gift for an 8-yr-old grandson. He loves it in both modes. As a matter of fact, the glow version is now his nightlight. It's nice quality for the price, and very educational. And of course it promotes interest in not only the Earth and geography, but astrology too. Leads to lots of questions and interesting conversations.

I bought this set for my 10 year old daughter and she loves it. The planets are easy to snap together and there is plenty of paint. My favorite feature is the glow in the dark paint. It can be painted on after the regular paint dries, or you can mix it with the colored paint for a different effect. It didn't glow as bright as I'd hoped, but that wasn't a big deal. The paint dried surprisingly fast, we were able to apply two coats of colored paint and the glow in the dark stuff in under two hours. I would recommend using a smaller paintbrush than the one included. We used a q-tip for the details. The sun and Saturn come with plastic rings, and there is even a poster of the solar system. The mobile was pretty easy to put together, and the instructions are very clear, my daughter did most of it by herself. We have it hanging on the ceiling in my daughter's room, so no one can touch it. When we were hanging it up, I accidentally scratched Pluto and some of the paint came off. Overall this is a great toy. I would recommend this toy for older children. I can't see a five year old painting details on the little planets and putting together the mobile.

I added this toy to my son's xmas list. With much luck he did get it; and we are pleased ! I would not say that it's a "fun to play with" toy but the entertainment value still exists. The planets are large enough without being overbearing up on the ceiling. They glow at night..which is the best part !! At 36 years old I can't wait for nighttime to hang in my sons room to check out the planets! The stars the set comes with are perfect. They are NOT the bulky plastic ones that can be seen day or night. They are paper stickers that disappear during the day (on the celing they do anyway) The planets come with name stickers which adds educational value. My son is five and LOVES, LOVES, LOVES these planets. I say get 'em !!

Best Deals for 3D solar system kit

The 3D Solar System Kit by Toysmith is a good educational/learning tool that introduces children to the world of astronomy. This planetary system includes spheres representing the eight planets and the sun, sized in relative order (not to scale). It hangs from the ceiling as a mobile unit and includes special glow in the dark paint for added fun.

This solar system kit comes completely unassembled and part of the enjoyment for youngsters is the application of the paint. There are two strips of paint included with several different colors. This allows kids the chance to explore their creative side. Some kids will choose to paint the planets according to their actual color, such as painting the planet Mars red. Others will mix and match and create all sorts of different color combinations. Kids will enjoy this part of the process almost as much as they will enjoy looking at the completed mobile itself.

Once the fun of painting is over, it will then be time to assemble the pieces together. This is easily the most frustrating part of the process and depending on the ages of your kids, you may very well have to complete this step for them. The reason this is so frustrating is because of the very small size of the hooks and the rectangular pieces that are anchored into the spheres. The tiny hooks and even tinier rectangular pieces have a small hole in the middle through which you have to thread the fishing line. This takes time and patience and you have to tie the ends securely enough that the line won't come loose. A single knot isn't good enough. You need to make two knots if you want the line to stay in place. The pieces are so tiny, many young children will be unable to complete the task and even many adults will grow frustrated. The manufacturer should rethink this aspect and, if nothing else, increase the size of these pieces, in order to make them easier to work with.

Another possible trouble spot with this solar system module is the fragility of the pieces. The mobile looks interesting hanging from the ceiling and its lightweight design means it will slowly turn, with the slightest amount of air. However, because the pieces are so light and fragile, you have to keep the mobile away from wind/air sources. The air movement from a fan, for example, could be enough to make the planetary bodies come apart and/or cause the nylon string to become untied. Even the air movement from a heat duct could be enough to cause problems. It's best to place the mobile far out of the reach of small children. If little ones can easily touch the mobile, the constant handling will cause the pieces to fall apart.

Taken as a whole, the 3D Solar System Kit by Toysmith is still good educational toy for kids that introduces them to the world of astronomy. Assembling the tiny pieces can really try your patience and the fragile nature of this mobile solar system limits its quality. However, it still has enough positive points to earn a slight recommendation.

Honest reviews on 3D solar system kit

It was very easy to paint. The planets are in two pieces so they sit nicely on the table while you are painting. There is plenty of paint. The planets are labeled on the inside, so you can make sure you are painting the right one the right color & so you put them together right. It was easy to put together and hang. It comes with glow & the dark paint, so at night it glows in my daughters room. She loves it. I would highly recommend this.

35 Mylar from .001µF to .22µF

35 Electrolytic from 1µF to 1000µF

This is a nice selection of components for the experimenter.

I saw this item advertised for about $16.99 on Amazon, so I put it on my wishlist. Then it dropped to $13.75 for a little while, so I went ahead and bought it. I thought it would be nice to just have a bigger selection of capacitors, since I never seem to keep all the values I want on hand. Like the other reviewer stated, there are about 30 ceramic, 35 mylar, and 35 electrolytic capacitors. 21 different values, and 100 total pieces. It's a nice start if you don't already have a big collection of components. You might be able to find them cheaper elsewhere if you buy in bulk, but for a beginner it's hard to know how many of which kind to buy from an online electronics company. This kit is convenient, and reasonably priced.

Just what I expected, It has:

Electrolytic (4.7 uF, 10 uF, 22 uF, 47 uF, 100 uF, 470 uF, 1000 uF)

All types in individual bags.

Honest reviews on Elenco 100 Capacitor Component Kit

This is a nice selection of small caps to get started with electronics hobby projects. As others have pointed out, the description conflicts with itself. This kit is made up of mylar, ceramic, and electrolytic capacitors, not just ceramic caps.

Also, the box says the bags are labeled and which values are in which bags, but the bags are not labeled. So I'm deducting a star for that and the confusing description.

Otherwise the caps work as advertised and give a nice little selection.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Elenco 100 Capacitor Component Kit

This kit came with a nice wide array of capacitors. I found the tolerance of the values to be around 5% checking with a high grade laboratory multimeter(Agilent 34405A). They are all quite small as you can see in the photos I added, so they will work nicely on a project board. If you are curious about the size and quantity just check the pictures I've added. Every bag contains 5 capacitors with the exception of the 100uF 4, 470uF 4, and 1000uF 2.

My only complaints, is the bags are not labeled. So you have to reference the markings on the capacitor bodies with the index provided inside the box. This isn't too difficult to do, but it is a little time consuming.

Overall I think the kit is a great value for the cost. You would pay this much for individual parts at Radioshack or most local ic parts supply stores.

For everyone complaining about not being able to use these:

The capacitors that do not directly have the values on them you have to reference the index. For example bag 4 which contains 100pF caps has (101) on the cap if you look closely. Bags 1-3 are marked in Joules, but they completely correspond with their value in picoFarrads i.e 10j = 10pF. The rest are large enough to actually have the values marked on them bags 14-21.

It is not impossible to find the values and you do not even need google to do so. The only reason I checked them with a meter was to see how accurate they were. I can understand this being very frustrating for someone new to using ICs for hobbies.

Customer Ratings: 4 stars

We bought this car for our 16 month old son and he loves it. The remote has only 3 buttons (forward, backward, and find remote). The buttons are big and easy for him to push. The figures don't move and the car doesn't light up or anything fancy but it honks, plays music, drives at a pace perfect for toddlers, and has the cute Umi voices (oh and it counts to 10). If your child loves cars and pushing buttons I would recommend this toy.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program It comes with batteries for the car but not the remote. The only sound it will make without the remote is a horn hooking by pressing a red button on the back. After putting batteries (3 AAA) in the remote, I was able to explore the other sounds. There are 3 buttons.

1. Up button: drives the car forward or in a circle

2. Come button: supposed to make the car come to you, but it may drive backwards or in a circle before doing so.

3. Back button: drives the car backwards or in a circle

My complaint is not with the motion of the car, but instead with the sound. If you release any button, the sound stops, then starts on the next track when a button is pressed again. As a result, you are going to hear lots of "Umi Car" and music, but very little counting unless you happen to have a very long straightaway and chase the car to keep it in range of the remote. This car car be somewhat annoying at times.

I would recommend this toy if your child is obsessed with the TV show; otherwise there are much better remote control cars or ways to teach a child to count. I am unfamiliar with the corresponding TV show on Nickelodeon since I do not pay for cable.

Would be nice if the figures were removable. The paint is poor on the characters, and the inability to remove them, and perhaps put in the smaller pose-able figures is a big minus.

Honest reviews on Fisher-Price Team Umizoomi: Come and Get Us Counting UmiCar

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Umizoomi is a decent enough show for younger kids that involves simple math. My son is a big fan of cars, so he gets a kick out of UmiCar. It was a disappointment when we got this.

The car uses an infrared remote which works quite well. It goes forward and back-left, so the child must learn that, to turn the car, he'll need to do a reverse circle to orient the car in the proper direction. In the center of the remote is a "find me" type button. It just makes the voice of Bot chime with the same saying every time.

When the car moves forward, Bot starts counting to 10. However, every time the car stops and then moves forward again, Bot starts over from 1. So, if you don't have a long enough stretch of perfect terrain, you never make it to 10.

There is a 5th wheel in the front that makes the car turn when in reverse. This wheel is also strangely equipped with a spring sensor that prevents the UmiCar from successfully navigating even simple terrain like going from hard wood to carpet. I suppose it's supposed to get the child to give it a kick, but it just ends up being confusing and annoying.

The 3rd flaw is that Mili and Gio can't be removed from the car. I wanted my son to like the car, but he loses interest very quickly. I found a school bus that works similarly, but plays music and does ABC. He likes that better.

Where this toy runs into issues is where lots of toys have had problems trying to be both educational and fun. It tries to be educational with the addition of counting. However, your children will rarely get all the way to ten when they are driving the car. My kids wanted to go backwards, forwards, zoom around a bit. Each time you push the button, the track starts over. Also, most kids already know how to count to ten so this isn't really "teaching" much (especially when the recommended age goes all the way up to 6 years old.

Pros:

The car is fun to drive

The remote is pretty intuitive for younger children, they will be ready to roll shortly after you hand them the remote

The car is durable we have crashed into couches, door frames, and walls and the car still works well

The characters look true to the cartoon

Packaging was great easy to get the car out and no need for tools (you do need tools to put batteries in the remote though)

Cons

The annoyance factor for parents can be really high with this car. It talks every single time the button is pushed for however long the button is held down. Over and over and over and over and over and well, you get the point

The car came with batteries while the remote did not. This wasn't a big deal, but a tad bit annoying as the kids thought the car was ready to go since the car made noise when the button was pushed.

Kids were disappointed that Bot was only on the screen of the phone rather than being a character in the car

Overall a fun toy. Toys should be fun, buy it because it's fun. Your child will learn to count soon enough if they aren't counting yet focus on the fun of this toy and all will be well in the world if you have a huge Umizoomi fan in the home. It will be disappointing if you purchase this for the educational aspects. The show is very educational this is a really fun, really cool toy.

I do highly recommend it, but beware it is loud and it does talk nonstop when in play.

Learning Resources Overhead Folding Geometric Shapes Reviews

Learning Resources Overhead Folding Geometric Shapes

These are plastic pieces that show how the shape would look if it was unfolded and flat. That is useful, but you can't actually fold them to make the shape. I didn't realize that when I bought them, and re-reading the description, I don't think it is very clear. The title should perhaps be changed from "Overhead Folding Geometric Shapes" to "Overhead Unfolded Geometric Shapes".

I have to agree with HomeSchooler100 in a separate review. The description is misleading. The pieces are described as folding, but do not. This is a companion set to the folding shapes and helps teach how shapes fold without actually folding.

I already owned the folding geometric shapes and just received the overhead shapes as a gift. I am pleased with the quality of the product. Each piece is made of hard durable plastic/acrylic. The manufacturer made each piece color coordinated with the transparent icon (each on a square piece) so that the teacher can help students see the "net" and match it to the 3-D shape. The teacher can have students view the "unfolded" (net) shape and then select the 3-D prism or cylinder with which it corresponds. Each face is easy to identify. I wasn't sure if it would be necessary to have these since I already own the actual folding shapes Learning Resources Folding Geometric Shapes made by the same company, but the two products work so well together. Definitely worth the money!
