Review of VTech - Kidizoom Digital Camera - Orange

VTech - Kidizoom Digital Camera - Orange
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars
Buy Now
Pros: Easy to grip. Fun colors. Somewhat easy to use

Cons:Terrible pictures. Nonintuitive menus. No datestamp on pictures.

We were reluctant to buy this camera vs. a small Canon (SD100) on ebay for more less the same amount. Our three year old had already proved that she could handle a small Canon (and even a big one) but we decided to go for a camera built for toddlers.

Image quality is as described by other reviewers: super low dynamic range, low resolution, slow shutter, low light sensitivity and very noisy. Pictures come out blurred, motion blurred, burnt or underexposed and people are hard to recognize. Vtech could have significantly improved performance at negligible cost simply by using a CMOS sensor made this century.

Menu navigation is OK but could be made much more intuitive and accessible, specially for toddlers. Even I have to fumble around the menus to find the featurs/settings I need, such as configure memory cards.

One notable point that this camera is lacking is picture review. Anyone who has kids and cameras nows that the most fun a toddler can have is viewing the picture he/she just snapped, and running to his/her friends and showing them. This camera only holds the review for a few seconds (not long enough) and bringing it back up requires pressing about 5 buttons to navigate through the menus to the picture editor. Again, anyone who has kids and cameras should have known that a 'review' button would have been a favorite.

The two-eyed view finder is good for kids as they don't need to learn to close one eye as in a normal camera (no points for learning here). However, the live-view LCD has a considerable refresh lag which makes it hard to frame the shot.

The trigger response is very slow (~1s) making it impossible to shoot anything that moves. I also lacks a half-way point like real cameras (no points for learning here).

Interfacing with a computer is straight forward. Just hook up the USB cable and the camera appears as a removable drive (or two if you have a memory card in it). From there you can copy your images to wherever you want. It does work on Mac OS X (10.5.6 maybe earlier). What is lacking here is that the pictures do not have date information (like any other camera) so when I import the pictures into I photo they all look like they were taken on Jan 1st of 1969. This messes up my iPhoto library and makes it impossible to use date/time as a way to track the photographic progress of our toddler.

Overall it is a descent toy for young kids 4 and under. Older kids will enjoy and have more learning benefits with a small Elph or PowerShot from ebay. I'm giving it two stars because Vtech could have significantly improved value by improving the software interface and picture quality without any additional manufacturing cost.

After reading many reviews and testing several digital cameras designed for kids, I finally chose the Vtech Kidizoom Digital Camera. I am extremely pleased with this camera. This camera is very durable and easy to use. My son, who just turned 3, was able to figure out how to use it in about 5 minutes and absolutely loves it. I downloaded about 500 photos the very first day and while he has slowed down a little, I have still downloaded over 2000 and he has nearly a full camera now. The quality is not professional grade, but he has still taken some nice photos. The camera also has Tic-tac-toe, Match, and a puzzle game, which have been very nice on long trips, especially since the camera has volume control. I have also been pleased with the low battery usage. I have only changed the batteries once, which I was pleasantly surprised about given the fact of how much my son uses the camera and the relative clarity of the color LCD screen. The software is easy enough to install and use, but not a big selling point for me. The camera also has the ability to change photos by adding in a Viking's helmet or framing with a winter scene that I have tried just to see how it worked, but my son has shown little interest in this function. My only complaint is that the camera only has a wrist strap and does not have a neck strap for when little hands get tired. Again, overall, I am very pleased with this camera and would recommend to anyone looking for a durable digital camera for a little photographer.

My kids saw this advertised on TV last year (2007) and added it to their Christmas list. I am skeptical about a lot of toys that are advertised on TV and am careful about what I spend my money on. I found this camera on sale and went ahead and bought it it seemed like a good purchase and my kids love taking pictures with my camera.

This camera is one of the best purchases I have ever made for my kids. They fight over using it this includes my 10-year-old boy who is mature enough to handle a "real" camera. My two girls (ages 7 & 5) love using it. The rubber grips make it easy for little ones to hold and truly protect it when it drops. They can plug the camera right into the TV and show everyone their creations. And, when we are traveling, the camera has a few video games that keep the kids busy in the car.

WORTH EVERY PENNY! The only problem they fight over it. So, I'll be buying another one this Christmas so the girls can each have their own.

Honest reviews on VTech - Kidizoom Digital Camera - Orange

My children are 7 and 4. My 7 yo wanted the camera and loves it. It has alot of fun features and was very easy for her to learn how to use. This was well worth the money. My kids have had toys that they play with for just a short amount of time and then lose interest. This is not one of those toys. My daughter has been playing with it for almost a year now and my son wants his own as well. It actually takes some nice pictures and is quite durable.

Well, I really liked this camera while it was still working. The pictures were kinda blurry, but they were fun for the kids. And my kids, no way are they touching my camera, so it was nice that they could actually take pictures of eachother, play games, and generally be rough on it.

Except it broke. After about a month for no apparent reason it stopped working. Pretty much first time I changed the batteries it was gone. I tried everything even pressing the nearly invisible reset button on the bottom. Then I called Vtech and they mailed me a new camera.

After they played with it for about a month, well, then it died. So I tried to change the batteries again. To no avail. :( For a product that is supposed to simply be durable our sure hasn't worked for long at all. And I know for certain that it was never dropped in a toilet or gotten wet. It was dropped a couple of times, but generally we tried to take good care of it. I don't understand why it works so inconsistently.

Compared to say, the leapsters which we have dropped several hundred times and they are still running great.

Cheap LeapFrog Leapster and L-Max Recharging System - not for use

LeapFrog Leapster and L-Max Recharging System - not for use with Leapster 2
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

I bought this system and returned it the very next day. Why? Because for the price of this exhorbitant recharging system, you can buy two packages of four Ni-MH AA batteries that recharge in 15 minutes and last as just as long... even on one charge! And, the charging device that came with the Ni-MH batteries is much more compact. PLUS, when the L-Max eventually dies, you can still use Ni-MH batteries for other electronic devices. Let's see you do THAT with this recharging system! Don't be fooled folks. Save your money and buy quick charging Ni-MH batteries instead.

Since the L-Max came with nothing and it eats batteries very quickly this was a saving grace for us. It was hard to believe that the L-max didn't even come with an a/c adaptor which we thought was a rip off. If you have an L-Max or are considering buying one the Recharging Kit is a MUST!

Best Deals for LeapFrog Leapster and L-Max Recharging System - not for use

I can't imagine how many batteries our Lmax would have sucked up, so this battery charger is a must have. Conversely we could have bought rechargeable batteries, but this just seemed like the more convienient choice for us.

It has a green indicator light that blinks when charging and goes solid green when done. You have to make sure the L-max (or leapster) is set on the cradle correctly so the light pops on, it is easy initally before you are used to the feel of it to set it on but not have it docked correctly.

Honest reviews on LeapFrog Leapster and L-Max Recharging System - not for use

This item is advertised for the Leapster and LMax, however, it is only for the LMax, not the Leapster. I came very close to ordering this for my daughter's Leapster but it does not work for it. I think the Leapster should be removed from the products information on here or others will order it and not be able to use it for their Leapster (non-LMax version) and have to go through with returning it.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for LeapFrog Leapster and L-Max Recharging System - not for use

This charger is a godsend. It may seem a bit expensive, but it more than pays for itself after a few months. Sometimes you need to adjust how the L-Max sits in the charger... you need to be aware of whether it is seated correctly and is charging before walking away (the speed of a blinking light at the base of the product is the indicator).

Overall, this product is worth buying.

The wood has a glossy finish and color is a deeper red than in the photo. The color of the wheels are also a brighter yellow than the photo and more lustrous looking. I like that it has rubber trim on the wheels to go easy on the floors. It came in a box with clear glassine on the top and sides which proudly displays the toy (securely fastened in its upright position). It is smaller than other pull toys I've seen, but the quality appears top notch. I am giving it as a gift for a one-year old, which the toy seems the perfect size for a new walker or a toddler.

my 4yr old son loves 'go diego go' (about an 'animal scientist' who lives in the rainforest), but all the related games have seemed disappointingly cheesey ~ this one, though, makes him feel like he =is= diego!

this sort of game is why i bought the leapster in the first place! the graphics are amazing ~ rather realistic & not cartoony. you start off picking a habitat (woodlands, rainforest, ocean, grasslands, or artic) & then have to 'win' 5 animals to fill it up by playing the 4 different games (maze munch negotiate a maze to get food for your animal; feature finder classify & sort animals by physical features; matchomatic match the animal with it's feature (eyes, skin, food, etc); scratch & see figure out which animal is hiding by scratching off as little of it's cover as possible) after you've gotten enough points, you take a quiz on that particular animal & then get to see it in it's habitat. also, "animal alert" happens periodically where an animal is in the wrong habitat & you have to find it. i wish there was more consistency in the animals (i.e. games for grassland animals focussed on animals that actually live in the grasslands) & maybe a bit more flexible formula but all in all a =great= game that's very educational & not patronizing. also, excellant integration of using both the stylus & arrow keys. like all leapster titles there are different levels of play.

~*~without a doubt our absolute favorite title thus far & i really hope they make more like these!~*~

My son(6) and my daughter(3.5) really like this game. We own over fourteen leapster games and this one is their favorite. It has four types of games: "Maze Munch", "scratch and see", "Feature finder" and "Matchomatics". It also has fact quiz for each animal that you are going to win. It is so cute when my three and half year old ask her dad:"Do zebras live in the arctic?" Then she would answer it herself:"No. It's too cold for zebra. Zebras live in grassland". Kids are learning while playing. I can not ask for anything better. It also keeps their attention for hours.

Best Deals for LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game Scholastic Animal Genius

You know I really was excited to purchase this for a XMAS present for my daughter who just turned 6 however I find that this game is so easy and not challenging that other games may have scatch feature to show which animal, collect animals and put them where they belong grasslands, artic etc., but in the end I find this game so easy that my 3 year daughter who picks up her leapster L Max and takes her sistes cartridge "Animal Genius" can play up to par with her older sister this is truly for a preschooler older than that may bore them.

Honest reviews on LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game Scholastic Animal Genius

My boys are just turning 3 and almost 5, and they both love this game. Actually, they fight over it, which can be frustrating for Mommy, so they are also learning all about Taking Turns! They have both learned so much from this game, and they take what they have learned and incorporate it into their other playing. They will play with their Little People animals and say things like, "Zebras live in the Grassland watch out for Lions! Lions eat Zebras!" That sounds harsh, but don't worry, no actual eating of Zebras going on in the game. The game does talk a lot about "predators", and the boys are learning a lot about what a predator is, and how nature works. We build upon what they learn in the game by reading more science-oriented books that teach kids about animals.

I will say that the Maze Munch game can be a bit difficult at the higher levels. Sometimes, I can barely escape the Grouper in the Clownfish maze munch! Might be that our arrow botton on the Leapster is a little touchy. It can be hard to get away from that grouper to hide in the sea anemone! The boys get frustrated by it, and want help from me. But maybe it's good to show them that I can't do it either!

I would say this is their favorite Leapster game, and it has been for awhile. They also enjoy Kindergarten, Letters on the Loose, and Numbers on the Run.

This is definitely my 5 yo's favorite Leapster game. She also has Sponge Bob, the Leapster game that comes with the older Leapster and the Disney Princess game. She likes them all, but I was definitely amazed at the amount of time she spends with this one....and I am amazed at how much she has learned! She literally plays for hours.

She was hoping if she "filled the world" she would get new animals to learn about. I tried to warn her that she probably wouldn't, but she just played and played until the world was filled. Unfortunately, she got to start all over. But honestly, she still loves it. She is constantly quoting me animal facts!

I just wish there were more similar games by Leapster. Maybe an Animal Genius II? I know my daughter would love it!

Great game, highly recommend for any kid who has an interest in animals.

Grandma's Trunk Alphabet Game is a very simple game that allows parents and kids to be creative and have fun. The trunk comes with 26 letter cards with a letter and image on them. There is also a set of Grandma's Riddles cards that ask simple "Who" type questions for kids to answer. There are five suggested games you can play all of which are geared towards helping kids with their letters. You can play with one child or a whole classroom! Have kids name the objects, sound out the letters, and put them in order of the alphabet. The cards are durable cardboard and wonderfully illustrated and kid-friendly. Its funny how something so simple can be so cute and fun.

I actually used this with my students today and it was SO much fun. My highschoolers, although they laughed as I ran around trying to get it to fill up, were mesmerized as it began to float! It was great to talk about the density of different air masses based on temperature in my Earth Science class, and I will likely pull it out in Chemistry too... in order to be light enough to float they had to make it out of REALLY REALLY thin plastic sheeting, so beware that it can get a tear REALLY easily, but we only had one tear and I just tied the spot where it happened and it looks pretty decent now.

Quite impressed. I teach high school physics and while my students most certainly had their doubts about how fun it could be to play with a giant trash bag, once the bag inflated and began to lift, we were all very impressed. It was about 45 degrees out side and mostly sunny. As soon as we went outside there was light cloud cover, but the solar bag still worked great.

Incredibly thin plastic. I hope to reuse it a few times, but don't expect too much in terms of durability.

Best Deals for Giant 50' Solar Bag

Pull this out on a nice sunny December morning. My young scientist helped me unroll the 50' bag. I tied one end and filled with air from the open end with a box fan. This quickly speed the inserting air process. I tied and tetered the end that was open. My 6 year old and 4 year old twins were happily amazed as they saw it start to float up into the air. They nickname their solar ballon "Long John". The watched and played with it for a couple of hours until it crashed into a tree and tore. Since it is so long I was able to cut out 10 to 15 foot sections to make a mini "Long John". Everyone was happy again until one of my twins let the teter go and we watched mini "Long John" sail into the clear blue sky. I have demanded that we get another one. Great unique fun for a sunny day.

Honest reviews on Giant 50' Solar Bag

You gotta try this thing. My kids loved it. I loved it. Then it flew into an ocatillo cactus and was destroyed. You can cut this into smaller sections to make more than one. Comes with some very lightweight string. I'm going to combine this with one of the reel-type kite reelers so I can bring it in fast if necessary.... not that you would need to, unless like me, you've got cacti all over the place.

As the photos above show, my twenty-somethings had a blast for a good hour or more. Got a lot of stares from passer-bys. However, my order total a few months ago for TWO bags came to $31.75 (with shipping). Now, ONE bag costs $29.83 (with shipping). Not a good value, but I'm still going to buy one more because I have a nephew who is really hard to buy for. (As a gift, this would be better with warm weather birthdays, etc.)

Update: August 8, 2012. Will be impressed with the company if they contact me and offer to return half of my $29.83 now that the price has 'suddenly' dropped to $15.

Game was ideal for our 3 year old. He seemed to get frustrated at times it was a bit difficult for him, but he learned. Should have considered the cost in the gaming systems a little better because he actually does better with the PS3, on children games, and they're more 'comprehensible'. Overall you get a good learning curve game for your toddler.

We bought this for our 2 1/2 y.o. as she inherited her older sister's V.Smile console. It's uncomplicated enough that she knows what she has to do, although from what I've seen, the main objective is for Wubbzy to collect bouncing balls. There is a bit of problem-solving required, nothing difficult, but just right for her age. There are breaks in between where Wubbzy has to choose the right shapes/colours, but so far, that seems to be the extent of the educational aspect I've seen. Mind you, we've only had the game about a week, and we haven't had a chance to fully explore it; my comments are based on MY personal usage of the game. Overall, my daughter enjoys playing it.

The game delights him with what it does, but it has features and educational components that will still interest him as he grows. I read reviews on this product before purchasing but the biggest factor was that it had the characters and songs from the TV show. This is one of Andrew's favorite shows and it holds his attention. The game system and cartridge is durable and travels well.

This should be in every household across America. I can see a big difference in my 4-yr. old already, and we've been using it for just a month. My son went from about 5 snacks a day to 3 much healthier snacks that he picks each morning and takes control over throughout the day. This is the best approach I've ever seen to teaching kids healthy eating habits.

I recommend this product for everyone. My children are grown, but when my neices and nephews come over, they can't wait to pick out their snack to make. The recipes are diverse so I always have something on hand that can be made. It's become a treasure hunt for the kids and they're learning life-long good eating habits. It's also a reminder for me; I see the clock on my wall every time I go to the fridge, it prompts me to eat healthy! I'll be ready for the grandchildren:)

Basically the system allows you to select the food that you want to have with the kids and then set the snack time. As a result, snacking is healthy and more controlled. It also really helps when it comes to shopping for snacks, because you know what to buy.

Great product.

Trust me-it will make your life easier AND give you new ideas for healthy snacking! Most importantly-it will teach your children

about healthy eating and hopefully give them the tools to learn how to snack wisely when they are away from home.

A great way to start developing fun, healthy eating habits together!

(i bet they will learn how to tell time too!)

My biggest issue with this product is that the design and the accompanying activity attachments don't make a lot of sense together. What I mean by that is the size/scale of the house is better suited for a 6-10 month old while I'd say most of the activities are more suited for 9-18 months (skills/strength needed to use). The square/all sides attached configuration is the only way to set it up that I feel is acceptably sturdy. The problem with this being that once baby hits around 10 months, the space inside the "house" is too small to comfortably crawl into through the slide or front door. Once your child is walking, you'll see another design flaw that they lowered the clearance of the front arch by adding a Little Tykes branding to it for your child to have to further duck under...or bump his head on. The only way around that is the zig zag configuration, but again, I don't consider it very stable set up that way. If your child uses it to pull up on, lean against, or has to use force to use the activities (mailbox hinge is hard plastic & difficult to open, bugs on top of phone accessory can be difficult to move, etc), you're going to constantly be holding it to keep it from tipping...especially the side with the high arch if its only attached on one side to the slide as shown on the box picture. Was hopeful this product would be a nice precursor to a bigger kid playset, but its use will much more limited than I was expecting.

I found this toy being discussed on a mommy blog site and it had a lot of great comments so I thought I would give it a try! Well, I am glad I did because this is the kind of toys/entertainment that I would like my son to enjoy. I read some of the other reviews on this as well and I think some of them are nitpicking the little things.

This toy is meant to encourage development of kids from 6mos to 36mos. The bright colors attracts their attention, the simple ball drop makes a crawler wonder where it went, the peek-a-boo game they play with the door and you can set the toy up anyway you want! 2 year-olds will start to play pretend (I actually saw my friend's daughter pick up the phone and say hello)... One 3-year old focused on the telescope because he was a pirate while his twin sister thinks its her tea room. It was not meant to have advance technological apps and bright lights and music and all that sort of things but instead, it's the "play" that entices the childs' imagination, creativity and discovery.

Best Deals for Little Tikes Activity Garden

There was several reviews that concerned me when I was thinking of buying this for my granddaughter's 1st birthday. Her momma&daddy are both tall and she was already 23 lbs and 30 1/2 in tall and she is already walking if that helps. I thought maybe she would like to play with it in open position if nothing else but she actually likes it all closed up for right now even though it isn't that big. I know each baby is different but she really loves it and plays with it every day so all my worry was for nothing. I hope my review helps.

Honest reviews on Little Tikes Activity Garden

My son LOVES this and we got it just in time for him to just be learning to crawl and pull up. We had considered one of the smaller activity tables but this seemed like it would grow with him and get more usage than a table would. It's the perfect size for our living room and keeps him well entertained. We'd rather him be pulling up on this than our coffee table trying to get to remotes and other things he's not supposed to have.

I almost didn't get this because the reviews kept saying the "slide" had inadequate head room but when I read the description again, the "slide" is a "crawl over obstacle course" and not really a "slide" at all. In the description it even says, "The activity gym includes an arch to crawl through". It is not intended to be used as a slide and if it were to have a slide it would make this toy much larger. Save the slides for outside!

All in all a good product. It could be a little sturdier but most of these toys are not rock solid. It's just the way things are made these days.

My daughter loved this toy from the second she saw it. At 8months old, she loves to sit in the middle of this toy and play peek a boo with the window shutters and teethe on the balls. She also enjoys playing with the removable console too. Right now, she's still learning how to use the ball shute correctly, and she could care less about the mailbox shape sorter or the "telescope" but these are activities that she will grow into with time. I love the bright colors, the different activities this toy provides, and the overall cuteness factor it has, but there are a few tweeks that could make this a 5 star winner....

First, just about everyone can agree that the slide is a joke. It's not just the size of the ramp, that's not even my main issue, it's the overhang part that's ridiculous. It's a good 4-5inches too short. My daughter is of average height, and even when she first got this toy at 6 months, there was no way she could sit on the slide and use it normally. Your child would have to be 3-4 months old to be short enough to sit and not have their head hit the overhang. As cute as the slide looks, it's simply not functional for it's intended purpose. Little Tikes should either send new parts to correct the issue or stop calling it a slide and call it a crawl ramp instead.

Second, I love the zylophone on the door, it's simple, cute, and sounds nice, but I wished that they added buttons on the other side of the door so that babies could play with the zylophone when sitting inside too.

Third, I wished that the red door was able to stay closed if you wanted that option. The weight of the zylophone makes the door swing open at the slightest touch. The shutters don't have that issue, you have to actually push them out for them to open and it should be the same for the door, just saying....

Fourth, if used on tiled/harwood floor, this toy will slide around. While I don't have this issue (it's used on foam tiles), some might have an issue and it should be noted. You might need to use some of those felt pads that are found on the feet of furniture to prevent scratching the floor.

Lastly, this toy is marketed for children ages 6-36months, but lets be realistic. This toy's age limit is closer to 24months in my opinion. The reasoning for this is that while this activity center has lot's of features and the abiltiy to extend and provide the platform for imaginative play, it's simply too small for most 3yrs olds to play with comfortably. So if you're intention is to get 2 1/2 years worth of play for your dollar, don't count on it! A good 2yrs is more like it, but that's still a pretty good return for your money.

Other than these minor issues, I really love this toy and so does my daughter. I was able to set it up in less than 1/2 hour. The directions were easy and clear to follow. When closed, this toy is super sturdy, easy to clean, and has no sharp edges that could cut little skin if they bump into it. This is a gender neutral toy that any baby or a pair of siblings would love to play. While it's issues are minor, I still HIGHLY RECOMMEND purchasing this toy for the baby in your life! It's well worth the money and a great long term investment toy for growing babies.....
