Vtech InnoTab Learning Tablet with Case - Pink Review

Vtech InnoTab Learning Tablet with Case - Pink

After long and hard debate between the Innotab and the Leappad, we went with the Innotab because it's cheaper(this exact product, SOFT case included(I just noticed that item being reviewed picture on this page shows the innotab sitting with the hard case, while the actual box shown on the main page uses the SOFT case, if it's got INNOTAB emblazioned on it, it's THE SOFT CASE!), was found for 79.99 at a big box toy retailer, and ordered over the internet, DON'T PAY MORE FOR A TOY THAN YOU WOULD AN ADULT VERSION!)

Why did we choose the innotab? Because of it's video playback capabilities, and the fact that the cartridges you purchase often have 5 different activities for the same price as one app on it's closest competitor, as well as expandability with SD cards. Of course, this is a christmas present, and I'm so excited for christmas. I just spent the last 2 hours playing with the Innotab and finally decided to pack it back up and tape it up so I can't play with it anymore :D I easily removed the Innotab from the packaging and replaced it just as easily.

The download was easy, I have Windows 7 and a 10g connection, but it literally only took a few minutes, the longest part was the upload of the updates thus far, and that only took a minute. I went to vtechkids website and registered it, set up my parental account, and my daughter's account. Then I spent an hour uploading music to the 2GB SD card(not included, I cannabilized my camera lol) and playing with the various functions. I absolutely LOVE the fact that it has a stand built right in. There's auto shut off if nothing happens in 8 minutes, and it goes into a modified sleep mode after it's been left for 4 minutes.

The consthe screen itself seems a little iffy, but that might just be me, personally(touch screens and I have long agreed to disagree), and this particular case seems really flimsy and cheap, more of a decorative cover than functional. Maybe when the Easter Bunny comes to town, we'll buy the hard case(cause I sure as crap ain't paying more for the hard case than I paid for the innotab, eh?) and I'm not too sure about the reader yet, but that was only one sample book, I didn't spend the 3 coins that came with it, I figured I'd better let her pick what things she wants. Everything in the store is 1 coin atm, but it's all 1 item, you HAVE to buy cartridges to get the premium character items, and we haven't gotten any yet. Theoretically she'll be able to earn more coins by completing certain games, we'll see how that works after christmas.

I don't have a tablet myself, and I'm actually jealous of my 5 year old. Lol. I'll be back if any glaring problems present themselves.

The Innotab is what I am having problems with. Can it be returned ? The batteries have been changed at least 5 times and she has only played on it for a total of around 3 hrs. What can be done to fix this?

I ordered this item for my daughter for her birthday. It worked well for a while, but then began making sparking noises, turning on and off randomly, and has a HUGE black mark in the middle now! My daughter has been VERY careful with her InnoTab, keeping it in the case as it is her favorite learning activity. She cannot play it at all now, and my attempts to contact the seller have gone unanswered. I bought this item early because the price was fair. I should have just purchased from another decent, honest seller and paid the extra money. I will NEVER purchase from this seller again, nor will I recommend them! My daughter is heartbroken!!!

The tablet was a great Christmas present for my daughter. Soon after receiving it the touch screen stopped working properly. We did all the trouble shoots and since could not get the touch screen back on track. I had to call the company of V-Tech to get a replacement tablet. Other than that my daughter loves it. She can now stay off of my iPad since she has her own age appropriate tablet.

I used these to build my own custom circuit board using ferric chloric acid. i used tin snips to cut them. They work. I'm not to impressed with my pcb skills though and next time I think I will probably just send the boards off to be made somewhere else, but these were great for learning how to do them myself.

I have a very advanced pre-k reader, and so I got this game as a challange to his 3 letter words that his class is on. He LOVES THIS GAME, addicted to it. It taught him pretty complicated phonic rules (ones that I didn't quite know how to teach him) like the silent 'E' @ the end, or the 2 vowels together, or even the simple identifing of vowels. THis game taught it to him in a way that he never even questioned about it. By the end of pre-k, while the other kids are still on 2 & 3 letter words, he has learned the tools to read anything, I mean even the longest of words. He even won the medal for best reader of his class. I reccommend this game even for kindergarden or even 1st grade. He's reading at a 2nd grade level. I didn't play the game myself (unlike the other games I usually do) but he LOVES it and it really worked.

My 6 yr.old is learning the grammar rule about the silent e when to use it and how it changes the sound of the word and the meaning. she is learning to read with the story and loves the games, they focus on helping the child use their skills with: memory, attention to detail, concentration and much more all with fun games and in a way that she does not see the work it takes to win the game. I love it and so does she! that is all I have to say.

I bought what I thought was an interactive BOOK as it was described. I received a small cartridge looking thing but NO BOOK. As I live in Europe and have done so for the last ten years and only recently adopted a 4 year old boy, I had no idea that what I was buying would require another piece of machinary or equipment. As I had it shipped to my brother's house in the states and then only received it a couple of months later when my mom came for a visit, it was too late to return it. So it is completely unusable and was a waste of my money. I feel that the information provided on the internet should clearly indicate that in order to read this virtual "book" one requires a another piece of equipment.

My 6 1/2 year old daughter loves Leap Pad but be aware that when you jump to the blue level, the entire pages are no longer read aloud (which was quite a disappointment to her). The pen will read the words 1 by 1, but not the whole page. The pages are fairly long and filled with text, yet the questions are almost too easy. Early readers may tire ofr reading independently. It would have been nice if the Leap Pad could have read the pages. There are limited activities compared to the orange (lower) level.

Looks nice, works well. Comes with some preselected options for goals and room to add more. I have four kids and this three kid option is as close as I could come. HAsn;t worked for my oldest son :) but that's no fault of the chart. It's about the size of two sheets of paper side by side and has a loop of ribbon to hang it with. I used the ribbon to hand it on a door in our kid room cabinet. But you could easily hand it with dual sided tape of some such. It's heavy, cause it's metal. Nice quality. Looks nice. Good options. win, win, win.

We originally wanted to get the Melissa & Doug Responsibility Chart, but with twins, we'd have to buy two. Thankfully, we found this chart, which has room for up to three kids. We like most of the pre-assigned tasks, but there are a couple that we wouldn't use (Brush My Hair both kids have short hair) at least not yet (Finish My Homework). Instead, we found that we can just use a label maker to make custom tasks and stick those labels over the existing, unused chore magnets. Works great for us! We only wish this chart included a little pouch or something for all the stars, or at least had room on the chart itself to store the unused stars.

I love this rewards chart! Just what we needed. I wish that it some how could stick to my refrigerator, we will just have to attach it to the wall. The stars are kinds flimsey and thin, but the chart works well with out them. We just put the kids innitials on the spot they earned. Overall great product

I like the concept, but when my daughter is trying to add her stars for each day, she ends up always accidentally wiping off the dry erase part at the bottom. It would perhaps be better if all the sections that you write are at the top (what you are working towards). Not a huge problem, I guess, but not ideal.

LeapFrog Explorer Learning Game: Star Wars: The Clone Wars
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars

This is my son's most favorite game by far! I am a teacher and love the math concepts that are covered. My five (almost six) year old son loves Star Wars but the games for our Wii and Playstation are too violent for him. He can play this and feel as grown up as his big brother.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

Star Wars and math lessons: talk about a spoonful of sugar! Your child can learn (or refresh) their math skills while exploring the Star Wars universe in this LeapFrog cartridge game.

We purchased this game to complement the LeapFrog LeapPad Explorer Learning Tablet sent to us free as part of Amazon's Vine program. My son is a fan of Star Wars, so we chose this game not knowing the tablet would be pre-loaded with several other apps and interactive books.

The amount of math learning he gets out of this cartridge game is negligible. He starts second grade next week and already has a good handle on basic fractions. However, you won't find many kids his age complaining about reinforcing math lessons with a light saber.

I don't recommend this game if your child already owns a handheld gaming system like the Nintendo DS or the Sony PSP. The game play, graphics and sound on the LeapPad system are fine for children who haven't experienced the games available on those other systems. Unfortunately (or not), my sons have Nintendo DS game systems, so they regularly play Star Wars games like Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga.

In summary, this was a perfect end-of-summer purchase. We were already getting our sons ready for the new school year, so a Star Wars game that reinforced geometry, fractions and place value was a nice change of pace from the Nintendo DS and Xbox 360 games. The LeapFrog game is value priced, considering most handheld gaming titles run more than twice the cost.

Rating: Four stars.

This game is very good for young learners. It teaches a basic understanding of fractions as well as number order and number values. Both of my boys enjoy this game and find the challenges suited to their level of learning. They also really enjoy beating up the droids.

So my brother is 5, and yes the toy says for 6-9, yet it has some things that i don't remember learning til i was later on in school (and i am, and always have been, an advanced student). He enjoys the game simply because you get to battle the droids just like in the game on Wii and dsi. However, in order to play, you do have to go through the educational sections of the game, and those are a bit difficult. It has things like fractions, and other things that are harder. I couldn't imagine a 9 year old playing this game, and i think that the game is too difficult for anyone, even though you can't really lose on it. he doesn't enjoy the game overall because he can't pass some of the educational levels. I would not suggest this game to anyone looking to order for kids under 8.

Grandma's Trunk Alphabet Game is a very simple game that allows parents and kids to be creative and have fun. The trunk comes with 26 letter cards with a letter and image on them. There is also a set of Grandma's Riddles cards that ask simple "Who" type questions for kids to answer. There are five suggested games you can play all of which are geared towards helping kids with their letters. You can play with one child or a whole classroom! Have kids name the objects, sound out the letters, and put them in order of the alphabet. The cards are durable cardboard and wonderfully illustrated and kid-friendly. I bought this guitar for my 6 year old who had outgrown his toy acoustic guitar. I am a veteran player and am very impressed with the quality both in construction and sound from it. My child is even more interested in practicing now with the "cool" sounds he is getting from it and (probably most important to him) it looks cool.

I researched several competitor guitars and found this one far superior for the price. The 3/4 size should last him through elementary school years and possibly beyond.

Click Here For Most Helpful Customer Reviews >>

Ok this thing is friggin rad!

Pros: Small, fairly lightweight for a solid body, tuners are slightly better than what I was hearing (at least they're phillips screwed into the mechanism and not totally die cast and held into place with just the tuner covers like some cheaper acoustics I've owned)

Cons: The bridge had to be adjusted and all of the pieces moved back. I didn't look up Gibson specs or anything but I just moved the low E's as far back as it would go while testing 12th fret harmonic vs 12th fret sound and I ended up about as far back as you can go before the screw that holds the piece on started hitting the string. It was dialed in just before the point where I'd have to cut the bolt down so it didn't hit the string. The rest of the bridge pieces are slightly less further back as the strings get higher tone, so it ended up stepping up from lowest to highest and looking like a set of stairs. This really isn't a con, as almost all guitars need to be tooled up before they're worth a crap -but since it said it was tested and adjusted by Dean professionals on a sticker on the neck I figured it counted as a con.

After the 20 minutes or so I spent putting new strings and adjusting the bridge I knew right away that this baby was well worth the price. I brought the pickups down a bit as they were really really high up especially on the low side of the strings, which gave the guitar a really bassy muddled sound.

I like the action and the neck is sweet. Also the headstock (to my relief) didn't say 'Playmate' on it, and instead it says Dean in cursive. So now I wont feel like I'm playing with a kids toy.

All in all a great little guitar, I'll probably pick up a second one for my nephew in a few years when hes old enough to actually respect an instrument, and go pawn the Squier strat he trashed; for like 20 bux or so. (hey that's a 20 sack right there don't laugh!)

I paired this baby with a Peavey 12w transtube amp (which smokes those mini fender ones)

Now I can finally jam in the bathroom. While I poo. JK xD

Best Deals for Dean Playmate EVO Junior Solid Body Electric Guitar, Classic Black

This is a nice 3/4 size electric guitar, especially for the price. I say 3/4 size because it's perfect for a teenager or an adult with small hands. It's not the smaller 1/2 size that would be appropriate for an 8 year old or younger player.

Better than average Chinese construction. The neck has a satin rather than smooth finish that keeps my hand from sticking, but took a little getting used to. The body is a nicely applied gloss black. The frets and fingerboard are well done, with no sharp edges.

When it arrived, it needed some adjustments, but after setting the string height and intonation to "Gibson electric" factory specs, the action and intonation are fine. Both of these are easily set with the "tune-o-matic" bridge. I mention intonation because not all 3/4 size "short scale" guitars can be adjusted to intonate correctly, but this one can. Search the web for "intonation" and "Gibson guitar specs" for more info.

Sadly, mine arrived with major scratches on one side. This was caused by a missing foam pad inside the box. Where the pad should have been, there was only the hot glue that was meant to hold the pad. During shipping, the (hard) hot glue rubbed major scratches into the area that the pad should have been protecting. Also, the cord plug was loose. A little work with automotive rubbing compound took care of most of the scratches, and tightening the plug retaining nut and adding locktite took care of the loose plug.

This guitar comes with a cord to connect it to an amplifier, something not mentioned in the description. It also comes with 2 allen wrenches for making truss rod (neck) and bridge height adjustments.

Dean makes a gig bag specifically for this guitar, and several other brands of 3/4 size electric guitar gig bags are available as well.

Overall, 4 stars (one star off for the scratches and loose plug). I would definitely replace it with the same model if were lost or stolen.

Honest reviews on Dean Playmate EVO Junior Solid Body Electric Guitar, Classic Black

Although other reviewers have given it a solid 4.0 stars, I consider this guitar a waste of money. Sure it's $99 (at the time of this review), but you will ultimately beg to have a more quality set up.

My gripes:

1. After playing for awhile the 1/4 locknut washer for the output fell off. I re-attached, but now the darn thing doesn't produce any more sound through the amp.

2. One needs to constantly tune the strings. If you just love spending a lot of time trying to tune rather than play, get this guitar.

I read someone else's review and mentioned the same locknut washer problem, yet they still gave this guitar a 4 star review. I beg to differ. Some people have lowered expectations I suppose.

I'm opting for the Epiphone LP Special II Les Paul Collection Electric Guitar. It's $69 more, but I'd rather spend that difference now with quality pick-ups, headstock, and bridge.....rather than having to stare at a $99 mess now.

We bought this for our 3 year old son. He loves it. The software is super easy to use. My Son's attention span isn't as long as the amount of music this can hold. My only complaint is the voice record feature. It is one button on the mp3 player and if your child pushes it it will record automaticly. Any and all sound including interference from other electronic devices. Makes a terrible sound. You then have to plug the MP3 into your computer to erase all the files recorded via the voice record button. Also, these voice record files land under the favorites category. This is the first category that comes on whenever you turn on the unit. A possible way to avoid this is to fill up the MP3 as much as you can so there is no room for recording. However it is hard to find that exact golden number so that you have 000 MBs/KBs left. I have yet to hit that nail on the head. Aside from this one long winded complaint I would reccomend this unit even though it is a bit $$.

We received this item as a gift and were excited to put our baby's favorite (or hopefully favorite to be) music on it. We liked the idea of hanging it in the crib and then as she grew she could tote it around and push the buttons herself. We could also change the music as she grew from Baby Einstein to Laurie Berkner to whatever comes after that. We opened it and played with the pre-recorded music, of which most is pretty good. We then decided to open the software and found that it didn't work on a Mac. We do not own a PC and now have no way to put any new music on the player. We had thrown away the box and didn't get a gift receipt with it anyway and so couldn't return. Just be aware if you purchase this you have to have a PC to run the software. It doesn't say this anywhere in the description of the product.

Best Deals for Playskool Made For Me Mp3 Music Player

Our baby has enjoyed this player since she received it as a gift (at about 2 months of age). She loves the music and the lights. There are some drawbacks. First, we did experience some technical difficulties and had to return the original for a replacement. So far the replacement is working nicely. Second, it is important to note that music purchased from i-tunes will not play on this windows-based product because the i-tunes files are "protected." We have successfully played the songs it came with. Among the songs that come with the MP3 unit, we very much enjoy the "playtime" songlist, but don't particularly care for most of the songs on the "soothing" playlist (because the woman's voice is too playful sounding for bedtime). However, we ripped our own CDs and put our own soothing music on the player and it works great... biggest drawback is just the i-tunes situation because we rarely purchase CDs anymore.

Honest reviews on Playskool Made For Me Mp3 Music Player

First of all, I have to say I love the idea for this toy. My kids love being in charge of their music and this is much nicer than having them run around with my expensive iPod. I can't speak to the durability yet, but hopefully it will stand up to them.

As for the reviews from Mac users who were disappointed that the software is only pc compatible: true. But you don't need the software to make this work. I plugged in the mp3 player with the included cord and my Mac treated it like a flash drive. Open it up, find the folders and copy music from your folders right in. No problem at alland I'm not that computer savvy. Personally, I'd rather do it this way anyway than deal with their software interface. This was just a simple drag and drop (make sure you aren't dragging whole folders though as nested folders won't play). Music sounds great and I can't wait to see the boys play with this!

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Playskool Made For Me Mp3 Music Player

Prior to buying I've read some other reviews on this site, some of which filled me with doubts. At the end I decided to give it a go. Now I can tell you this was the coolest thing I could get my daughter for her 2nd birthday. She takes it everywhere with her and plays with it every single day (maybe not so good for parents, but what can we do...). We found the cover described in some other reviews as "strange" simply nice and funny. It is also OK to use the toy without it. My daughter learned all the controls in a day or two (this includes the ones on the back for switching the playlist and playtime), so no problem there. The player can go from very quiet to surprisingly loud and still play very well.

Someone was also mentioning it plays only one song at the time. There are four modes of play single song (you must press the play button after every song), some 20-odd minutes (don't remember exactly) and the whole playlist. There is also a shuffle mode. And, it comes with probably all the good old classics, such as Twinkle twinkle little star, etc., so you don't need to be getting those on CD...

There is some CD with some software for your PC, which I chose not to use and simply uploaded the songs to the card to the specific directory, which seems to be working as well. Only one negative point, the memory card is relatively small (128MB/2hours), my daughter's music collection is already much bigger :))) Maybe someone could think of a version which takes interchangeable SD card or similar...

This is a cool idea and a cool toy for any child who loves music. What I don't understand is why this is the only such toy on the market???

We got this toy for our son's second birthday. He immediately liked the lights, sounds and music. Fairly quickly he was able to play the "find the letter" game, and the "find the color" game. He also likes the songs. There are several different games, and the voice is not too annoying (unlike lots of other toys of this ilk). Our son in about to turn 3, and he still plays with this toy on a daily basis. It has stood up to lots of abuse, only occassionally refusing to turn on. Taking the batteries out and then putting them back in always fixes the problem though. Overall, highly recommended.

We have tried a few 'early computer learning toys' and found them wanting. This is the first one I have seen that is properly interactive, bug free, and well built.

My kid is only 2, so he is officially too young. But frankly, he has mastered the paint part of it already; he is quickly learning the rest.

A few technical points:

1. Yes, its like a USB keyboard but it does not act as a keyboard if the software is not running. So, the kid is not going to be able to mess with your PC outside of the software--a good thing. The software auto-launches and closes with the on-keyboard "power button" so the kid can start it up without help. My kid is 2 yrs old and learned that fast.

2. The tablet is like a tablet, not a mouse. Its position on the screen is absolute rather than relative. It might take the adult (me) a bit to get used to. My kid finds it easy, but he doesn't have 20 years of habit to overcome :).

3. The docs are evasive about where the kids drawings are saved. Here is the answer for Windows XP users:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Fisher-Price\Computer

Cool School\US\User0\Base

The 'Application Data' directory is normally hidden. Substitute 'User0' with the relative position on the log in screen. The files are regular .png graphics files. Fair warning: don't change these files. The software won't expect that. This is simply a hint for making a copy of them to email to friend/grandparents :).

If there is any downside to this thing, it is that it contains a limited amount of content. The kid hasn't explored all of it yet, but I suspect I'll end up buying the software expansions.

---------------

FOLLOW-UP: A few friends of mine have tried running this product with Windows Vista. Very buggy. I only now recommend this for XP users. Typical of many toy manufacturers, they simply don't get software. It is not a "make once and forget about it" thing. You have to keep and plan for updates as the industry changes. The price they sell it to distributors for should account for those future costs.

I bought this when it was first released for my 2 1/2 year old. I hooked it up to my old Dell with Windows XP (this is not Mac compatible and I converted to iMac in Dec). I bought the additional Dora & Diego software, and the Clifford software will be installed on her 3rd birthday in 10 days.

She LOVES this thing! I LOVE THIS THING! It keeps her busy, and she easily mastered all the navigating. The first month we had it, the old Dell had no sound she still managed to use it and enjoy it in silence. Now, I almost wish I hadn't gotten the sound fixed! HA!

I'll definitely purchase the additional software to keep the variety in the activities.

The only problems I've encountered: sometimes a warning pops up that the keyboard cannot be detected. I just unplug it and plug it back in. Problem fixed. The cards that are the templates for writing are very slick and impossible to stack neatly get a small basket or something for them.

I've found it quite durable.

The best feature for parents is that it requires a password to exit the program, so if you install this on your main computer, the child cannot get out of the Cool School program and into your computer! Brilliant!

I bought this for my 4 year old daughter and although she enjoys playing it, I really question the educational value. There are different subjects for her to explore, but the product is not really teaching her anything substantial. We have a lot of Leapfrog products and I have to say that this product does not teach her anywhere near as much as those do. Some of the product is hard to use as well the letter writing part seems like a great idea but in reality it is next to impossible to actually recreate the letters and not have them look like disjointed pointy things (that look nothing like the actual letters). My daughter got pretty frustrated with that activity and now doesn't even try that one anymore.

My niece has the ClickStart from Leapfrog and now I'm wishing I'd bought that instead it's really helped her learn how to spell 3-letter words and it's great that there's so much focus on computer skils too (another thing the Cool School does not do).

All in all, definitely not worth my $.

We bought this for my daughter last Christmas, only to find out that the $15 games are going for over $200 (wonderpets) The product has been discontinued by Fisher Price so now people are price gauging like crazy! It is a very fun toy my daughter loves it and has 4 or 5 games that I bought in the $30 range from Ebay, but if I knew the games weren't going to be made anymore I never would have bought it. Just wanted to make you people aware of this, especially since now I see it is at a lightening deal price.

I bought this toy mostly for my 5 yr old but my 7 yr old also likes playing it. Very simple to install I had no problems at all. Each game add-on has a lot of things to do. Very educational, highly recommend. It is somewhat similar to to the Digital Arts and Crafts Studio but this is more of an educational toy than just pictures.

My 9 year old son picked this guitar based on price (he was saving his allowance for one!) and it has been a great choice. The guitar arrived in less than 48 hours. It has a nice sound, is well constructed, and was a great buy.

Bought this guitar for my son he's turning 3 next week and has been playing since he was 2. My friends and I are all retired rock musicians and play several times a month for the families. I was concerned that he was playing a toy that couldnt be tuned (hence always outta tune) so I bought him this. Look out world...

Excellent quality guitar stays in tune and comes setup fairly well. Just tune it up (stretch the strings) and play. I'm considering getting one to keep in my office, since a lot of the people I work with are musicians too (beats our ukes!)

Good stuff check it out.

For my 6 year old for xmas. Paid more for better quality, liked the nylon string options for little fingers. Pretty disappointed that the color is not natural as it appears in photo the overall color is orange stain...would not have purchased for my daughter if it was orange, she has a natural color (like Taylor Swift) in mind.
