FingerTech timing belts and pulleys work really well together. I used their handy web calculator to position the gears to minimize belt slack which worked perfectly for me. Overall very happy. My only regret is that I didn't know about FingerTech on my earlier projects, they would have been so much easier (and might have even worked). Make sure that you have the right size allen wrench, the set screws are small.

I gave this 5 stars because overall I think this is a great game. It operates like the video arcade game pac-man did. The difference is, you choose the level you want to start and the Leapster then gives you a word to spell according to that level. Then you have to correctly go through the maze and find the letters in order. So for example, if you picked level 1, you may have a simple word like tag to find. Once the game has started, you have to go through the maze and find the T first, without bumping into another letter and so on and so forth. You can get bonus points by chasing mice after you correctly get each letter among many other things.

My son only chose to stay on level 2 so far today, so I am sure there are other things to do with this cartridge. One of the things I liked the most was that you had to spell the words out of "thin air". There werer no hints or anything to copy. It was learning through trial and error. I was originally worried about my son being bored becuase he is already a reader (5.5 yrs old), but it really was fun for him to figure out words he only knew in a "kid writing" sort of way. Having the Pac-Man arcade approach kept him interested.

I don't know what the price will be after it is back in stock, but we got it as buy one, get one and it was also reduced to 17.99 each. So I only paid 24.00 total with the shipping and tax. I think the original/non-sale price was really high though? If you have a reading kindergartener or 1st grader plus, they will like it. If your child can't read yet, this is too advanced and not worth spending the money yet.

I bought this game because my daughter has been discouraged with spelling. This was a perfect choice. She loves to play and is quickly gaining confidence in her spelling ability. It is the classic example of a fun and educational toy.

I thought the game seemed dull, but my son likes it so my opinion is meaningless.

Kids are required to go through a maze and spell words while avoiding obstacles. Level one is 3 letter words, higher levels have larger words. Sometimes I have a hard time understanding what word the game is saying to spell but I guess it is just me because my son doesn't complain about it.

It isn't his favorite game (he has 12 leapster games total) I would say this is his 4th or 5th favorite game)

Several of the games borrow from each other by simply replacing letters with numbers, but overall there's a lot of variety here. My kids have been learning quite a bit from it and are even speaking some simple spanish! (I think it teaches 6-8 small phrases in total)

The computer talks and gives instructions for each game and the volume is adjustable (we have ours set on the lowest volume and its still fairly loud). There's an "answer" key if they get stuck and a "repeat" button if they don't catch what the computer said. There's a "mouse" connected to the computer but it doesn't serve as a traditional mouse. There's an alien on it that shifts up, down, left, right and his head serves as button. This is mainly how selections are made; no arrow keys on the keyboard. This was probably the hardest thing for my 3-year-old to grasp, but after watching his 4-year-old sister (who also enjoys the toy) do it he caught on fairly quick.

I have to say that I was taken back by the small screen size (roughly 2 x 3 inches despite the large size of the computer) but the kids don't seem to have a problem with it. Also the screen isn't backlit, so there has to be plenty of light to see it. Other than that, no complaints.

Something that I've been very surprised with is the durability. I've caught my boy dragging the computer across the floor by the mouse cord several times and it still works perfectly. Also, the top flips open when Buzz's head is pushed down but both of my kids for some reason insist on "forcing" it open themselves. I say "forcing" because it opens fine with a little tug and hasn't affected it latching down. Overall, I'm very impressed with the durability and am happy its still working despite all the abuse.

They don't play it every day, but 9 months later they still get it out fairly regularly. Highly recommended.

I will say, without hesitation, that this is the best electronic toy we've ever bought for my son!! He's 4 1/2....and loves this!! You will need to invest a few minutes "teaching" the child how to use it.......the mouse is really geared up for a small child.

It will take your child a month to work through all the activities! It's loaded with stuff!

The toy arrived broken but because I purchased it for Christmas at the end of October start of November, I can't return it due to Amazon return policy. When the toy arrived the batteries were dead. I examined the toy and all seemed well except for the dead batteries, which I had planned on replacing Christmas day. On Christmas day, I removed the packaging and pulled out the battery tab on the back of the toy. The laptop came to life. Then I made the mistake of closing the laptop. Now, it won't open at all. Which I find weird considering the whole time the laptop was closed while wrapped. To open the laptop, you must push on the bubble that contains Buzz and the laptop should pop open. We tried everything to open it including a screw driver and knife but all failed. The toy is just stuck closed. I'm disappointed but not nearly as much as my four year old son who keeps asking "Mommy, why did Santa give me a broken toy?" I have made several attempts at contacting Vtech but I just get the run around. Amazon return policy is difficult (short) and Vtech is unresponsive. Looks like we ate this purchase.

I work with children with austism and had a student who pulverized every writing tool we found because of his need to chew and bite down hard. I tried the tubes but would end up with a big drooly mess on the pencil. These chewable shapes are tough enough to handle his bite and he isn't a big drippy mess. We have been able to keep the same pencil since putting on the new toppers.

My 6 year old daughter will chew off the eraser, metal band, and start chewing through the wood of a pencil if she doesn't have anything better to chew on. We've had these for a few weeks and they've been very helpful. (She also uses another handheld chew stick.) She has managed to chew off a few tiny bits from the star so I don't expect these to last forever. Still, these are very handy to have available and don't look "babyish" in with a 1st grader's school supplies.

My 11 year old enjoyed this kit and building the various models. Overall this is a good toy for those interested in science/physics/engineering. Couple of gripes though. Some parts are very hard to fit together and require some muscle to get them to fit properly. This was made more difficult by the lack of detail and perspective in the instructions. The instructions are nicely presented and the color is great, but often did not provide enough detail (close ups) of certain areas or parts, or provide a different angle to readily understand how the various small parts are to be assembled this lead to a bit of frustration. If not for this, I would have given it 5 stars.

I believe that I must have received a box that previously returned, as the resistors are in terrible shape. The leads are all bent and twisted, like someone just balled them up in their hand. I'm an Electrical Engineer and I've been looking around for a kit of larger 1% resistors for my experiments and stock. I ordered these kits and I am very impressed.

This is a great value, and it saves me from having to select each value to build my own kit, which I was thinking of doing, but didn't have two hours to select through the values and quantities, and all the electronic order nonsense.

I've been an electronic hobbyist for over 40 years, less so in recent years. Along the way, I have amassed quite a collection of parts, including resistors. The problem is that when you need something, it takes too much time to find it. And then, the silver leads are often tarnished requiring cleaning before they can be soldered to. In the end, you may have to go to Radio Shack anyway.

Recently, I've gotten more interested in pursuing my hobby again. When I found this resistor assortment, I decided that it was a good value and would save me a lot of time. The resistors are all sorted by value into separate envelopes and are "1%" er's. In the "old" days, I mostly used "10%" resistors because they were readily available and cheaper. The extra accuracy could be more important for analog applications. Since almost everything I do is digital, I could probably get by with just a few values and less accuracy.

However, there is nothing more frustrating than when I have to stop working on something, no matter what that is, and go hunt for something or go to the store or order. This it at least solves the resistor search problem.

These resistors are great. You get most of the popular sizes and they are packaged in little zip lock bags. I tested a few at random and the tolerance was less than 1%. The problem I have is the color of resistor, which is blue. For me, it's easier to distinguish the color bands on beige resistors. I hope someday all manufacturers print the actual resistance like Vishay.

Reviews of Workbooks-Math Basics Grade 3

I purchased this workbook to give my son a preview of 3rd grade over summer vacation. I really love this booklet and for the price, it cannot be beat!

It consists of 56 pages of math activities with an Answer Key in the back. The last page is a certificate for the child after completion. The back of the booklet provides additional activities to reinforce the math concepts learned.

It is divided into sections (4 digit addition & subtraction, multiplication, division, etc.). At the beginning of each section, a brief summary is provided to show demonstrate the math concept. I found this to be very helpful as a parent since the way math is now taught is different from how I learned. It can be confusing for a child to learn a method at home when different terminology is used by school ("regrouping" versus "take away" when subtracting). It really helps for the parent and teacher to be on the same page when learning something new.

I highly recommend this booklet for review or preparation for 3rd Grade math!

What is great about these books is they seem to cover the majority of the grade level math with a few pages of exercise problems at a very cheap price approx. $3. The Deluxe Edition contains 2x more content than the less expensive NCTM books ($2), so be cautious when you order. You will notice the "Deluxe Edition" label is printed on the front cover upper RH corner of the book. This Grade 3 Math Basics book happens to be a Deluxe Edition version.

If you want more practice exercises for your children, then Kumon offers great workbooks based on grade and math subject. Here are some 3rd grade examples:

Grade 3 Multiplication (Kumon Math Workbooks),

If you are home schooling and your children need lots of practice exercises, then go with Kumon. Kumon cannot be beat for exercise practice! Some other really good books that Amazon sells which target specific math topics and give you lots of practice exercises are produced by Chris McMullen. Do a search with his name in Amazon to find his books.

If you just want a little practice material for your kids to do during the school year, or summertime, then this book would fit the bill at a lower cost than Kumon. You can also find free practice worksheets on the web, search for Math Drills.

Good book. We had our daughter do just 2 pages a day this past summer between third and fourth grade so that she wouldn't get too rusty over the summer. She actually did not mind doing it as it was a nice review and well-organized.

Best LeapFrog® Leapster® Learning Game: 1st Grade Deals

I bought this cartridge for my 4YO son. He loves it. The games are fun and very educational. His favorite is the "LetterPiller" game, where the child guides a little caterpillar to letters in order to form words. There is a cute show when the word is complete and the game is very forgiving of mistakes. This has really helped my son learn to keep trying. Before he got his leapster, he would get upset after making a mistake, now he doesn't care at all. There is also a bumper car math game which is a little advanced for him, but would probably be good for a 5YO. There is a "log ride" game which teaches grammer. My son really likes that one too.

While I think this is way to easy for a real first grader, it is perfect for a 4-6YO child. My 4YO absolutely adores it. So I think the game deserves 5 stars even though they got the ages wrong.

I wanted to buy a game that would make my 5 year old happy and, at the same time, improve his skills in Math and language. This game achieved achieved both ends.

I strongly recommend it for kids in Kindergarten, because it stimulates them. I don't know whether it would work as well for 1st graders.

My son loves this Leapster Game. I like the fact that he is actually learning something. He is in kindergarten and I got this game for him to present a bit of a challenge for him. He has not completed all the levels yet, but he likes the fact that he can figure things out on his own. My daughter just turned 5 and is already on level 3 of all but math. She's an early bloomer with academics, but still, for a 6 year old this might be okay for the first couple of mos of 1st grade and then it would be too easy. I wish it was more challenging for her, and covered more subjects like science facts and basic geography. I guess we'll be investing in 2nd Grade sooner than I thought.

All of the games progress in two stages. My girls really like decorating cakes with Hello Kitty in Cake Time, it teaches colors, shapes and also goes into memorization, by remembering what all the guests want to eat.

HK the Magician is great with teaching numbers and basic addition. Then you also drag and stack buckets smallest to largest or in matching colors.

Dance to the Music teaches children about different musical instruments and what family they belong to. Next, it stresses following directions by moving HK to do different dance moves.

In the creativity side, you get to make a HK greeting card and can save your work, as well as taking your picture with her and decorating it, and also 'dressing up' with her bow, etc.

It's quite fun for both of my girls 3 and 6, the animation is great! More of a game than learning for an older child, a little lacking for my older daughter, but she likes the appeal of Hello Kitty. I would put more of a THREE-6 age range on the game. I do think it is a good buy here on Amazon, since their prices are usually better than stores, but I would really recommend it for younger girls more, and I would buy it again. I looked through it before giving it to my daughter and was worried that she wouldn't like it. The games could have been developed a lot more to be more enjoyable and I was very disappointed that it did not include the other Sanrio characters like My Melody and Keroppi. It was pretty boring.

Some specifics:

The cake game should have had a free play option to just decorate the cake.

The greeting card designer should have been more free in the options. For instance, the red and white card only allows options for Christmas cards. All of the decoration options should be available for each card.

After giving it to my daughter she asked not to have to play it anymore and we took it back to the store. :( Very disappointing.

I got these for our 18 month old as well as the letters by Vilac. They are a great size, fun and colorful. The decorative top seems to be some kind of compressed laminated paper adhered to wood adhered to the magnet. The magnet is the same size as each number. It contains all numbers, plus/times signs, minus/equals signs, and rather large dots that I suppose can be used for decimals or the dots on a division sign. They are really sturdy, as our dog took a fancy to them and it took him a while to destroy one--and we rescued two other numbers fairly quickly and they didn't have much damage to them at all. Our dog is a bullmastiff, so he typically shreds dog toys--so I'm giving high marks for construction.
