For one I LOVE it's made in the good old US of A. Also it's a wooden learning toy that will last well beyond my kids having kids. I have an almost 3 year old and 1 year old twins and ALL three can play and learn at the same time without trampling on each other's space. Well worth the money and a lot better than spending $10 bucks here or there on cheap China made produces that won't last longer than a bad cold.

FingerTech S3M Timing Pulley - 15T Reviews
FingerTech timing belts and pulleys work really well together. I used their handy web calculator to position the gears to minimize belt slack which worked perfectly for me. Overall very happy. My only regret is that I didn't know about FingerTech on my earlier projects, they would have been so much easier (and might have even worked). Make sure that you have the right size allen wrench, the set screws are small.

I purchased two of these nets, one each for my 3.5-year-old and 1.5-year-old, and they love it! At just under 24" total length, it's long enough for the kids to reach up (fairly) high to catch insects, but not so long as to make it unwieldy, even for my 1.5-year-old. As with all Melissa and Doug products, it seems very well-made and sturdy and the cute, colorful design is an added bonus. Very pleased with purchase!
The handle is too short.

I had one bug net and after they caught "each other" 20 or so times, the net was destroyed. This one is actually sturdy and the handle is great. The other ones feel like a wire is going to poke out at any moment and stab someone.Best Deals for Melissa & Doug Happy Giddy Bug Net
This is a very sturdy net that can capture bugs but also fish in tide pools, etc. My grandkids love it. She carries it around everywhere and wants to capture everything. She lives by the ocean and tidepools are her favorite to go "fishing" as she describes this activity. It's colorful and cute. This was a real plus.Honest reviews on Melissa & Doug Happy Giddy Bug Net
It's hard to see the bugs through the colored mesh. White mesh would be better. The handle is too short.

This net is perfect for catching various animals on lawns or in swamps. I am an animal enthusiast and had a hard time finding a net that would either not tear or have a broken handle after a few long trips to the creek.Tuesday, November 18, 2014

The microscope itself is pretty solid. The included 25x eyepiece, which is needed to reach 1000x, doesn't fit the scope securely as far as I can tell. There may be some way to do it, but the instructions won't help you there. If you're like me and try to do it anyway, be prepared to grab a magnet to fish up the tiny (TINY) screw that holds the 10x eyepiece in place. For the 4x and 10x objective lenses, you can use cheapo slides, stacked 2 high. This is good enough to check out plasma cells flying around, hair structure, fly wings and other commonly available things that strike your nerdy fancy. As a casual hobby microscope, this thing is totally worth it.
HOWEVER: The 40x objective can't focus that high above the stage. You'll need thin (.8mm or less) or depression slides, which are slightly more expensive, and slips in order to really get in tight for microbes, amoebae, and carbon fiber robot building (you should probably have a pro 'scope for that, anyway). It shouldn't deter you from buying, but be sure to add the right slides/supplies to your order.
Also, if the portability is a seller for you, I'll add that there is clearly a battery compartment in this model. However, and I'll concede that I may just be stupid, I can't figure out how to get that bad boy open.
EDIT: 6 months later, I found myself in a situation that required the use of the battery, and I decided to go for broke. Pliers remove the cap easily, and the fastener beneath the cap is sturdy enough that it won't cause damage. Disregard my portability complaint.
Re: microscope, all metal body. Knobs are not metal, but overall, very sturdy and will be great for a small classroom of students. The movements are very smooth...great buy!
When the scope arrived, we opened it right away. That is when our dissapointment began. The scope is not "all metal." The body is indeed metal, but many of the other parts, including the casing around the light, are not.
Nevertheless, the unit appeared sturdy enough, so we decided to give it a whirl with some slides I had purchased as well. We got the light to work, but every time we even slightly moved the unit to insert a slide or adjust the view, the light flickered on and off.
We promptly contacted the seller, who seemed happy enough to take the unit back. He sent me a mailing label and apologized for my inconvenience. That is when the fun started. This seller only refunded part of the cost of the unit. When I emailed him to ask why, he informed me that he had been able to get the light to work for five hours continuously by plugging it in at his shop. Because of this, he charged me a $20 shipping charge. Of course, I also got the light to work when the unit was just sitting there, but this is not a lamp, it is a precision instrument.
We then proceeded to exchange emails abour this all day. I am not sure how much this guy makes an hour. Given his poor customer service ethic and obvious overpaying for postage, I am sure it is not alot. But I am also sure it cost him more than $20 of his time to exchange emails with me and insult me by insinuating that I was lying about the defective condition of the microscope.
Bottom line, this is not a good product or a good seller. I highly recommend moving on.

Great customer service and product. I received the microscope on time, however the ocular piece was defective as it would not remain intact due to threading misallignment by manufacturer. Although Amazon mistakenly offered to give me a refund inc s&h without contacting the seller, assuming Amscope would not be able to replace it, Amscope had contacted me immediately regarding the issue, once my disappointed feedback was posted. Within 2 days, I received a new microscope at excellent condition and free s&h. No stress involved! I just need to send the previous one back, also s&h prepaid by the Amscope. Gladly, I removed the negative remarks.Re: microscope, all metal body. Knobs are not metal, but overall, very sturdy and will be great for a small classroom of students. Very happy with this purchase. I received it within a reasonable time. The price is great for what I got. I am a home school mom and will be able to take advantage of my daughters natural curiosity to explore. The instructions could be a lot better. It was confusing to change the lens out. However, I was able to find information on line that helped me. Overall... Great product for a great price. Best of all, she will be able to use this thru High School. I would recommend purchasing some prepared slides to get started. Not the Lab quality scopes that I was used to working with in the Lab, But this is a great quality started scope that gets the job done.Monday, October 20, 2014
Talking Odyssey III Interactive Tabletop Globe Reviews
This is a great learning toy and fun as well. It has a wealth of information that one can learn at any age. The globe has a game where 2 players can race see who can find the most countries the fastest which my children (9 and 11) love to play. Also, my nephews recieved one last year for Christmas and they said it was a hit. I would say it is probably more suited for ages 7 and up.
During the couple of hours we were able to use ours before the wand for locating places on the globe stopped working, I was able to make some observation. The globe is easy to set up and easy to play. There are several skill levels ranging from easy to moderately challenging, and it is fun to race against the timer and compete with one's self or another player.
The games, however, are quite repetitive. Being asked to find Micronesia or The Hague during every third or fourth game somehow loses its novelty. One player may have to hunt all over the globe, which is as it should be, but the next may get five countries in a row, all in Africa, to locate, which is not exactly a level playing field. Apparently the algorithm driving this program is anemic and forgetful.
This replica of the world is itself quite small, so locating cities or tiny countries in crowed portions of Europe or Asia requires squinting and hefting the globe up inches from one's face to try and find Luxembourg or the Vatican City. (But after being asked to find the same locale repeatedly, that deficiency does not matter as much.)
The wand itself proved the fatal flaw in our globe. It simply quite working, leaving the globe to repeatedly squawk "look in the southern hemisphere" or "fly 4,500 meters northwest" even when we were dead on blotting out Guam with the tip of the wand.

We purchased the Odyssey III as a gift for my geography-loving 8 year old son last Christmas. Not only was it a hit for him, but his two older brothers love it as well! Many nights I find them all racing each other in the games. It is used often and still functions as well as it did when we first purchased it! Everyone who comes over loves to play as well. Now we are buying them for Christmas gifts for cousins this year.Honest reviews on Talking Odyssey III Interactive Tabletop Globe
I got this for my 6 year old nephew when he showed an interest in geography. He loves learning about all different countries and I think Odyssey really does a great job teaching you about them. It even plays short clips of music from the country to show you the vast differences in culture. If I had this when I was in my Geography class, I'm sure I would have enjoyed the class a lot more.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Talking Odyssey III Interactive Tabletop Globe
I bought this toy for my 6 year old nephew. He already had an interest in learning about different countries and cultures so he was immediately fascinated by it. The games are fun! He and his parents were able to play together trying to find the different places on the globe. There is also an introduction to music and languages from different countries. I had been meaning to buy this for a long time. I'm glad I didn't wait any longer. Children can begin using this learning tool as early as 5 or 6. It's nice for them to see there is more to this vast world we live in than their 1 spot on the map. I believe it will spark a desire to travel. It's a great toy and gift. I highly recommend it!Friday, October 17, 2014

My 4 yr old got this for Christmas and LOVES it!! She performs all the time and this microphone gets carried all over our house. So far we haven't had any problems.
My brother got this for my niece for her bday. She LOVES it! It has really great features. The music it plays is great and modern. The applause buttons are hilarious and she just love love loved those especially when she got the hang of controlling them with her feet. Definitely a 5 star!
I know another reviewer had an issue with volume. That wasn't really an issue for us. Perhaps the batteries weren't fresh?

My 5-year-old daughter was insistent that she receive this for Christmas -it was top of her list! So, in spite of the mediocre reviews on Amazon, I ordered it. It's a VERY cute product, easy to raise/lower, and the buttons for clapping/cheering are fantastic. HOWEVER, it's really not very loud!!! I never thought I'd complain about that, but it hardly sounds like her voice is coming through a speaker. You have to get down on the ground, right by where the sound comes out, to even feel like the voice is coming through the microphone. We'll keep the product, because she LOVES playing with it. And, maybe it's a blessing in disguise that it's quiet. But given the volume situation, I'm not sure I would buy it all over again.Honest reviews on Winfun Sing N Jam Platform Pink

Reviews of Valencia VG-CG1KR 1/2 size Classical Guitar, High Gloss Red Finish
When I purchased this guitar for my daughter it was only $40, which I felt was a good value. My daughter is thrilled with it, even though she doesn't know how to do anything more than just strum it and make up silly songs. It's not a toy, but I'd consider it to be just above a toy in quality, which is something I would expect from a $40 guitar. Since I have no way of knowing how serious my daughter is going to be about learning to play guitar, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something she might only pick up a couple of times, but at the same time I wanted her to have something that was a little more than a toy.
The main problem with this guitar is that it doesn't hold its tune. I have to tune it every time we get it out, and I don't mean that I just have to tweak each string a little. I mean that it ends up so hideously out of tune just from sitting in the closet that even listening to my daughter just aimlessly strumming it is impossible.
I'm not a guitarist, though, I'm just someone who picks up the guitar occasionally and can strum a few chords and play an easy song or two. So I don't know if newer guitars need to be "broken in" ... maybe given some time the guitar will hold its tune better? Or maybe by suggesting such a thing I've just lost all credibility ... :-)
At any rate, I see that this instrument is now selling on Amazon for about twice what I paid for it. Given what I know now, there's no way I would pay $80 for this guitar. I know you can't expect a professional quality sound for $80, but I think you should at least be able to keep it in tune.

Discount Fascinations Antworks Illuminated with Green
I got htis for my 2 year old girl who was facinated by ants outside. The gel is perfect since they can drop the ants and all is well. The top is secure and they can get it off )at least the little kids). She has dropped it really hard and it cracked but only visibly, you cant feel the crack and the unit is still just fine. She loves to carry it around with her and watches it constantly. Perfect gift!!! I ordered from life studies.com and ordered the ants for $5 at the same time, they came very quickly and all alive. I think if you ordered separately it would take forever and the kids would have to wait. They start tunneling within a day or so and is really cool to watch.
"green ingredients" that we worked around. The bottom had caked so there was a gap where the ants seemed to make a easy home instead of tunneling.
Even with all this (and i would hope yours came with softer and newer ingredients) it was a great learning experience and something for the whole family to watch. It has been 4 months now and we are still watching these smart little creatures work and exist but will let them go in a few weeks to make a new home in the wild.

After reading numerous reviews on all the ant farms out there, I decided on this green Antworks farm. I'm so glad I did! I picked the color green because it is my son's favorite color-got it for our 9 year old son for Christmas and after only 5 days, the ants have connected some tunnels and are very active. We keep it on our kitchen counter because everyone in the household is interested in watching them. The LED light is great and makes it easier to see the activity and the ants-I would definitely recommend it even though it cost more for the light. I ordered the ants through Antsalive-they had an option for the ants to arrive a little before Christmas or a little after. I picked after and they arrived just 3 or 4 days after Christmas in a tube, all alive. It has been a great, educational experience. It is smaller than the large sand antfarm my brothers had when I was growing up. But I really like the gel instead of sand and my son doesn't know the difference. He is so proud of it and likes to show it off-he thinks it is "so cool!". It has more of a curved futuristic look to it, you can see the ants from all sides and through the top. I would like to get the Antworks multiple farms that connect together, now that I know first hand how great a product it is.Best Deals for Fascinations Antworks Illuminated with Green
We loved the gel ant farm! It was so much fun for adults and children alike to watch as the ants began digging within the first 24 hours and making connections from tunnel to tunnel throughout the week. Even now that the are done "building", it is still fun to watch them moving throughout the tunnels. I would highly recommend this to anyone -young or old. It is especially neat to watch at night as the underlying lights illuminate the whole thing and make it fun to watch both day and night.Honest reviews on Fascinations Antworks Illuminated with Green
This is a fun toy with a great learning experience. It is more difficult to work than a older child can usually do. Our kit came with older dried"green ingredients" that we worked around. The bottom had caked so there was a gap where the ants seemed to make a easy home instead of tunneling.

I was a little hesitant to get this for my 7 year old, but after reading the reviews I was convinced to give it a try. This has been a delight to watch for the whole family. We have been taking pictures of the ants progress and watching them work. It is so amazing. It has been 5 days and they have built through out the whole farm already. Although the harvester ants do sting....you will not need to come in contact with them. When we ordered the ants, they came in a vile and they were practically frozen and they weren't moving. So we waited for them to start wiggling around a bit and then dumped them in. The lid is air tight and it is very hard to get the lid open. I doubt my son could get it open. Not that he even wants to. Everyone should do this at least once in their childs life. It is truly fascinating....Saturday, August 30, 2014

One of the eggs came apart at the seam, which I was not happy about since I use them with babies and toddlers (luckily it happened at home, not with them), and many of them had lots of sticky residue from a little label that they came with. But other than that, they are good little egg shakers for the price I paid. The sound these shakers make are smooth (not chunky) and the eggs seem solid (I'm using for a 3 year old Sunday School class so that is important to me!).
