When I bought this I was looking for just a cheapie radiometer. However, after reading reviews, and, looking at specifications, I decided to purchase this one. I am glad I did. The cheaper ones have plastic bases that will fade and crack on sustained exposure to sunlight. This one is solid glass (or crystal).

This is a work of art. The stem is made, by hand, from six different strands of blown and extruded glass. Half of the strands are viridian in color, and, the other half are clear. They are skillfully woven together to support the globe which contains the radiometer.

The radiometer works in low light conditions (obviously the bulb is a vacuum). This stands about 10" tall and is easily seen from anywhere in a room. It works right out of the box no digital programming, power tools, multi-language skills, 800 phone marathons, or legal intervention required to get it to work.

The glass is "delicate." This is very lightweight so that you can display it and move it easily, but you need to treat it with care.

I use this in my greenhouse for giving me a quick monitor of light conditions for the plants. The greenhouse can be a "rough and tumble" place sometimes so I was worried about breakage. I put this on a shelf and used "museum putty" to hold the base to an aluminum shelf. So far, I haven't had any problems. You can use museum putty anywhere. This is so pretty that many visitors remark about it when they visit my greenhouse. It is well worth the money I paid for it on this listing.

Review of LeapFrog Letter Discoveries

My 3 year old loves this toy. We bring this in the car or to the restaurant for my son to play with. Since he got it for Christmas, he has finally started to learn phonics which I had previously tried teaching him using flashcards. Like the other posters have mentioned, this toy's music doesn't drive me crazy. It's easier on the nerves than most. The toy has many features including a game in which children are either given the letter name or the sound and asked to locate the corresponding letter. It keeps score so you can monitor progress. The music option lets them play the alphabet song providing they hit the letter keys in order from left to right (like reading). Great toy! I would have rated it 6 stars had that been possible. We've had lots of electronic toys, but this has been mine and my son's favourite. LeapFrog toys are superior.

My niece is two and loves this toy. She plays for hours at a time and likes to mimic the sounds. I always buy educational toys and feel that Leapfrog has toys for all ages and children learn as they play. How can you beat that? I bought this for my 2 1/2 year old for Christmas and have really enjoyed watching her play with it. She sings the alphabet song along with it, which is a treat for me. My 5 year old nephew who is a special needs child also loves this toy, and loves the Letter Sounds mode. It has been dropped down a flight of stairs already and is still working perfectly. The option to turn the sound down is also great. Anyone who has kids knows that the most annoying thing is to hear a toy all the time, and when this is turned down it is definately manageable, and not nearly as distracting.

Ok, my wife purchased the leap frog alpha-pet explorer from a used toy shop (At least that's where we get most of the kids toys, almost brand new, half the price). My boy loved it. Played with it for the first six months constantly. I had some individuals (mainly his speech therapist) state it should be used in moderation, and I agree. However, my son might not be talking as much as other children but he sure knows his alphabet. Ask him to bring some of his fridge phonics letters over (made by the same company) and he can do it by the letters name or sound (he could do this by age two). Would I use this toy as they only thing to teach the alphabet to my son? NO! Do I find it useful in moderation and to supplement other learning methods? Yes!!

*As a side note I have done a fair amount of research into early reading programs, and have had much better results with phonic based material.

My son received this as a gift when he was not quite two years old. He liked playing around with it right away but was really only able to play with two of the modes the music and the one that just tells you the letter. Now that he's nearing 3 year old he plays with this literally every day. He'll sit for 15 minutes (or more) at once playing with this. And he's clearly learning his letters and the sounds they make. Now he plays all the games on it and is learning about how to make his name out of letters. He enjoys it and it has been a great learning tool for him.

I like it because on the lower volume (which, lucky for me my son will leave it at) it doesn't annoy me in the slightest. Most noise-making toys annoy me too much.

When my two year old got his power touch last October he received a couple of extra storybook and Elmo's Big Surprise was one of them. With actual voices from the show this book fits into your Power touch as you can follow along the story and pause to press on virtually everything on each page. Lots of fun games involving ABC's, Numbers, Words, colors, etc. Very fun and very educational We really love our Power

My 18-m old daughter is not a puzzle-kind of girl. While some of her friends can solve simple shape puzzles, she just is not there yet. This peg puzzle is fun and pretty much open ended, so she has fun putting them together without being "correct".

The puzzle is durable and good quality. The blocks seem to be dyed rather than painted, so no chipping paint off of this one. The pegs are very sturdy and no nails or screws visible. It's made in Thailand, and the quality is far better than Chinese counterparts.

The stacking clown is extremely well made. It is solid wood throughout and larger than I thought. I purchased this for my 3-year old daughter and while it does not have flashing lights that immediately commanded her attention, I believe that she will come to appreicate it. The concept is to make different facial expressions and the shapes can be stacked in different ways. After the disappointment of battery operated toys from Disney not working on Christmas morning along with the ridiculous packaging, this toy is a breath of fresh air.

This shape sorter is brilliantly conceived. Though intended for babies, its play potential continues well into the preschool years. I highly recommend it for every nursery.

* Charming design. The cheerful yellow-roofed plush house in which shapes are sorted and stored calls many warm and whimsical associations to mind.

* Cleanup and portability. All the birds fit easily into the house with little risk of them falling out. The handle is ideally suited for small children to carry or drag the house about without needing help from a grown-up.

Third, the birds are adorable, with bright eyes and perky beaks that make them look perpetually inquisitive, garnering their inclusion in a host of make-believe games. They've been welcome at tea parties, in princess castles, on Jack Sparrow's shoulder and on Babar jungle safari. There's an aura about them that's irresistible. Even when shape sorting has lost its educational appeal, the birds still come along.

Melissa and Doug have produced a real winner in this shape-sorter. It is a lovely, practical, multi-use baby toy that children will be a long time in outgrowing.

I have not seen any babies playing with this toy so I can't review it in that capacity but what I can say is that the person I bought this for thought this was a very cute toy for her baby. The only drawback is that the birds have eyes that can come off. Babies really like the crinkly squishy shapes, and it would have been better if the birds didn't have eyes that can come off and become choking hazards. It says its for babies 8 months and above probably because of the eyes. Of course any babies younger wouldn't know how to use the shape sorter but they would probably enjoy feeling the birds and squishing them and chewing on them. Without the eyes I think this toy would be for a broader age range.

Ok. At first I thought this toy was great. But really... it isn't.

As far as a shape sorter goes... this is a pretty poor example. The birds are over stuffed and do not fit into their respective holes. In addition, if one DOES manage to a get a bird in to the house through it's hole, there isn't really enough room for all of the birds unless the house is busting at it's seems.

The birds are cute, the house is cute, but it just doesn't live up to it's claim of being a shape sorter. My ten month old never plays with this toy and shows zero interest in it. Not even just to play with the birds.

This toy is great and so cute. My son puts it on his lap next to his daddy and tells us he is working as he plugs away at the little keyboard. Its educational which is wonderful and is a great aid for us as we are teaching him to read and write. HOWEVER there is no volume control to this toy and its loud. Its like Optimus just woke up, failed to have coffee, got an angry text from Starscream and is now tutoring your child angrily. Its so loud!! As mother, I like toys that have some volume control, first because I have other kids so when nap time occurs, I need quiet play and lastly because I am a mother and sometimes the incessant loud toys make mommy's ears bleed. This toy is really awesome and worth it but its loud. And the screen is really small. It reminds me a little bit of a calculator in a huge briefcase.

This was a gift for a child with special needs. He is responding like crazy! He loves the transformers look, and it makes it so easy for him to learn. He is progressing much faster than we hoped and it looks like he'll truly benefit from this laptop. It's nice to see someone took an interest in creating an educational toy that even a "special" child can use.

I bought the Spiky glove 2 pack for my son, he's 5 and has a thumb sucking problem. I thought that if he wore this glove it would curb his desire to suck his thumb during down time (watching tv, reading books, etc). He won't keep them on. However, my other son enjoys putting them on (and taking them off) just for mere pleasure.

My only caveat with this product is that they came in pink and purple. Nowhere near the colors shown yellow and orange. Most boys wouldn't wear a purple and pink glove. Those who decide who gets what color could at least send a "boy" color and a "girl" color or let you choose the colors yourself.

After purchasing the LeapFrog® Tag Reading System and having my son work through the "Ozzie and Mack" book that came with it, I realized that I would need to get him a book that was much more in line with his interests.

Enter "Kung Fu Panda"! The movie was awesome, the story was awesome and the lessons were awesome. In short, the book was awesome. It continues to inspire spontaneous acts of Kung Fu movements in the car, the dinner table and just about any place where my son can flex his little body. He really enjoyed it. A friend purchased the Leap Frog Tag for her 4 year-old son recently. We sat and watched as our boys were captivated by every wordat the playground on a sunny afternoon in Seattle, no less. I knew this would be my son's 4th birthday present. The other mom and I agreed to trade books over time. My son LOVES his. He sits and "reads" alone and has memorized Kung Fu Panda, which happens to be his favorite movie. We are not big on TV, movies or electronics for kids but this is fantastic. Highly recommend.

Of all the way too many toys my 11 month old has, I would say this one gets used the most! It's a very simple toy---basically just an open box with shape openings on the side. Blocks like the Peek-a-blocks but in different sizes come with it. It has batteries for sound, and the sound plays very easily when you put the blocks in, or in fact anything in! That is what is so fun for my daughter---I can fill the box up with all sorts of her toys, and she takes them out and puts them back in, and gets rewarded with non-annoying musical sounds for doing so! She isn't much for sorting yet, but I think she will be soon, and it's nice this integrates with her other FP block toys. Most any box can be used for most of what we use this for, but this is very durable, has smooth edges, and it's the rare case that the slight electronics it has actually adds to the fun!

I agree with a previous review. The handle has pinched our daughter's fingers several times. I wasn't sure what to do so I just tried to watch her more carefully while she was using. One day while my husband was home he saw her do it. He took the toy and using a screwdriver took the top apart and removed the handle. Once she is old enough (she is eight months now) to carry the toy around we will put the handle back on. Other then that, I love this toy. I also use this sorter for storage for her other PeekaBlocks and RollaRounds. I was disappointed though, that normal shaped rollarounds won't fit in the circle shape. Other then that, I think the shape sorter is a great idea for a traditional toy. Sarah also loves to hit it so the music starts. All around it's a great toy and educational.

I originally bought this toy last Christmas for my then five-month old daughter. I mainly bought it because I knew my daughter 'should have' a shape sorter for 'learning purposes.' I bought a lot of the peek-a-block items, and I had no idea she would end up loving THIS ONE so much and playing with it as much as she does. It's actually one of the toys she plays with the most . . . even now at 17 months old! The sorter is of course used for transporting much more than the four shapes that comes with it, but she enjoys the music, and the size is just perfect for her play. And she has found that it can sort a variety of items as well! I should warn those of you who also have climbers, that she likes to try to stand in it with both feet, use it as a stepstool, etc, which of course, it isn't made for. But she's going to do that with anything!

Needless to say, I was very pleasantly surprised, and it has far exceeded my expectations . . . making it WAY worth the money! (I've already gotten a year of play out of it, and I don't foresee her getting tired of it anytime soon!)

I'm sure there are more exciting toys out there. Many of the "tricks" are probably something you could do with things around the house. But the question is... would you? I wouldn't. It's all here in a kit. He took it in his room and holed up and had a blast with it. Then he came out and showed me every single trick in the kit and that was even more fun. He really liked it. He's into science and inventing things. It's not the most amazing toy on Earth but I think it was well worth the money for how much fun he had with it, even if it's not necessarily ALL that special if you break it down.
