Review of Rhythm Band RB779 Large Kokoriko
This is my first kokoriko, though it is fun to play with sound that can span from soft to loud, the sound and motion remind me of shuffling a deck of cards. It seems sturdy and is stapled to a piece of thick leather.

Best Connor's Kits for Kids: Polymer Power Deals
I love this kit! It is as advertisedeverything is included and it does make LOTS of slime! I spent an enjoyable afternoon with my grandkids making slime and learning about polymers. We all had a great time. They especially liked how the slime could stretch over a hand (or their toys). The glitter in the Slime Base was also a big hit.
After a few hours of seeing what slime could do, we packed the slime into the (provided) plastic zip bag and refrigerated it for another day. Clean up was simple (they didn't care, but I appreciated that part). I also like that the kit was developed by a kid, well-thought out and with clear instructions. A big two thumbs up for Connor's Kits for Kids!

Review of Awesome Deck of Awesome for Boys and Girls, Series I
Customer Ratings:
List Price: $17.45

Disclosure: We received a review copy of this item, but all opinions are my own! We don't let our kids spend a lot of time playing video games/watching television, but our 8 year old son LOVES doing those activities. We are using the Awesome Cards as a reward system. He has the opportunity to earn a card each day by doing a special task/chore or sometimes just by having a good attitude about doing a family activity. Each card can be redeemed for 10 minutes of "technology time" and it's really helping him do more around the house without me nagging AND he's whining less about when he can play video games. It's a WIN-WIN!
What I found really interesting with this product was how my kids are searching for new awesome things to do now to earn a card. For instance, over the course of last year, one of my daughters big fears was jumping into a pool. Over our family holiday this summer, my daughter suddenly blurted out "dad, would I get an awesome card if I jumped off the dock into the water?" When the reply was "of course" off she went. Now, I made the mistake of leaving the actual cards at home on our trip, but this did not stop her from coming up with 6 more ways to earn throughout the rest of our holiday.
Any 'toy' that can help push my kids forward to accomplish more awesomeness in their life certainly deserves 5 stars.
My daughter is three, and shall we say challenging? I practice gentle parenting and do not agree with time-outs or other punitive punishments. I also do not like reward charts (have a read of Alfie Kohn to find out why). So finding a way to discipline my child can be hard.
I tried out the Awesome Deck of Awesome and fully did not expect it to be much good for us. I didn't expect my little girl to be interested in the cards or earning them, but I was wrong!
First, I let her look at them but made it clear they were mine. She spent happy time sorting them out into piles of girls' and boys' ones (my beta deck was a neutral deck with cards for both sexes) and decided on her favourites.
She was then very keen to earn them by being awesome! I allowed her to keep them and gave her a purse to put them in. I now need a new deck because she has nearly all of them and refuses to give them back! I guess I should have made it clear to her that they were currency so I didn't run out, but she is too young to want to use them to buy treats for her, they ARE the treat. But that is great, because that is why and how they work.
With older children it would definitely work to get them to spend cards to buy treats.
I think the deck is great awesome in fact!
It focuses attention on the positive behaviour rather than the negative and offers opportunities for "bad" behaviour to be turned around and made awesome to earn a card. My daughter has grasped the concept of "being awesome" and even issues me with cards if she feels I have been awesome enough, which is super-cute and also makes it much more holistic. We are each of us both the teacher and the student.
The cards are fun, and although it might feel sexist to have girls' decks and boys' decks, we beta testers did ensure that designs were not focused on prettiness or being "feminine" so they are really just more focused designs than pigeonholing genders. I was pretty vocal about that in the beta testing!
It's surprising how many ways you can use the cards and how versatile they are all ages the Awesome Deck of Awesome blog has more ideas for how to use them.
In all, a great gentle parenting resource that you can use in loads of fun ways.

Bought a pack of the boys/girls cards for my son (3) and daughter (6) and I am amazed at how well this simple idea works. I find that my kids are looking for opportunities to earn the cards even though we have not developed any sort of currency for the cards yet (i.e. one card allows to kid to do/get X). They enjoy earning the cards simply for the sake of collecting them. What I found really interesting with this product was how my kids are searching for new awesome things to do now to earn a card. I was one of the beta testers for this product, but other than that I have no connection with Dr Awesome, who created it (and yes of course that's his real name! It must be, right?). LeapFrog Touch Magic Learning Bus Reviews
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Not surprised that a company as well respected as Leap Frog made this wonderful toy. Many times, toys like this with a sound element sound garbled and tinny. The sound on this toy is crystal clear, just with just the right variable volume. The buttons are the right size for little fingers to easily manipulate them, and the sounds are bright, happy, and engaging.
I like that there are 3 different modes with this toy, engaging various different skills (motor skills, letter/picture recognition, following simple directions, etc.). It is so fun the little ones will not even realize it is educational.
I also like that the toy is light weight, yet sturdy. It is easy for little ones to hold, and will withstand the inevitable drops that will occur.
All in all, another A+ toy from Leap Frog.
As for the letters, it is nice to have a toy that has good sound quality and that enunciates the letters (and the sounds for each letter) well. This is particularly important for young children who are still learning to speak. My daughter doesn't have as much fun with the letters as with the songs, but I think she is learning from this aspect of the toy.
Finally, there is a game mode that says things like, "Find the letter K." This is a great mode for slightly older children who already know their letters well. I think this game mode will make this toy appropriate and fun for a wide range of ages. All in all, this is a great toy with lots of learning potential.
In a fun format the little one learns to recognize letters and the sounds they make. He or she also learns to recognize initial letter sounds of words representative of the letters. Some of the word/letter matches are untraditional like: mararena for M, wave for W, lime for L, and otter for O. Since I'm a vacuum cleaner fanatic, my favorite combo is vacuum for V.
A youngster touching any of the letters is treated to the spoken letter, its sound, and the name of the representative picture. There is a quiz mode during which kids are asked to identify specific letters or objects. There's also a mode that allows the user to play music, listen to songs, and even add instrumentation to the songs.
Learning Bus is large enough to display all the letters and sample object pictures, a six key keyboard and five musical animals. At the same time it's light enough for small hands to hold and manipulate. I like that all of the edges are rounded for safety.
This Indonesian-made learning tool is a worthwhile purchase, though I do have several quibbles. The clarity of the spoken words on the unit could be better; instead it can be a little muffled at times. In quiz mode, little ones are asked to identify individual letters or objects. I wish the mode would also ask users to identify specific letter sounds. For example the voice could make the "b" sound and ask the user to find the letter that makes that sound. It would add another dimension to the toy. Maybe I'm expecting too much for an instrument that's designed for those 2 and up.
As much as I hate to admit it, Learning Bus has far more educational value and interest longevity than a Mr. Potato Head will ever have.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is another winner from LeapFrog. Already adept with an iPad, my 2-year-old daughter had no trouble learning how to use the LeapFrog Touch Magic Bus. She particularly likes to listen to the songs and play with the piano keys. Ingeniously, when the songs are playing, all of the piano keys are keyed to make sounds from the same chord family as the song that is playing, so the piano sounds actually complement the song being played and do not create any dissonances. This makes my 2-year-old feel like she's actually contributing to the song, and that's fun for her. My only complaint is that I would love for this toy to have more songs (there are only three songs). As for the letters, it is nice to have a toy that has good sound quality and that enunciates the letters (and the sounds for each letter) well. Best Deals for LeapFrog Touch Magic Learning Bus
This is a very light, colorful, musical toy which is great for car rides. However, I have to deduct a star for educational value (even though I think LeapFrog is great), because my 2 year old frequently thinks she is pressing one letter, but gets another letter's soundbyte (because it's very easy to set off a letter sound if your sleeve touches the device while you're reaching for a higher letter). Maybe for an older kid this wouldn't be an issue though. The music is catchy and it's great the way you can play along with the piano and your accompaniment always sounds great. The illustrations are a little creepy and not the usual Leapfrog Scout/Violet/Leap. I like it that there is a learning option, a game option, or a music option. It's challenging to hear the sound and find the corresponding icon and sometimes I don't know what the correct answer is myself. Lots of interesting non-standard selections (not the same old choices) and the sound quality is great. I think at this fifteen buck price, it's a good deal. My 26 month old showed a TON of interest in the store with it...then when we got it home, not so much...and now at 27 months, she's all into it all of a sudden. I think a slightly older child would get more out of the games but I thnk even a much younger kid would have fun just playing around with cause and effect and pushing buttons).Honest reviews on LeapFrog Touch Magic Learning Bus
The colors are truly vibrant and the sound quality is good (albeit somewhat on the loud side), with three music songs which are catchy (and not annoying). My two year old hasn't shown the same attention to this as she has to other LeapFrog products (perhaps because she prefers the animated screen devices), although she really enjoys the piano section (which is great because they've set it up so that any note that you press during one of the musical songs matches the song in a pleasing harmony, so there is no way to sound bad)! There is an exploration/learning mode where your child can press any of the many touch points and here the letter name, sound, or the name/sound of an item or a "play" mode which asks you to find a certain item (sometimes by sound as in "touch the picture which makes the sound ___" (which is a little tricky even for me!!). The illustrations are a little creepy looking and not the usual LeapFrog characters. My main fault with this is that it is easy to press the wrong button as my 2 year old's sleeve hits the device so from an educational standpoint, I see her getting confused when she thinks she is pressing the letter "B", but it's making the sound for "R" which her hand has ever so slightly grazed as she's reaching for the B. If you can get this on sale, I still recommend it as there are many different options here and perhaps and older child wouldn't have that issue. I also think a much younger child (9 months) would enjoy this just to explore cause and effect with pressing buttons. It is very very light (so much lighter than you would expect), making it nice to have on a child's lap in the car and easy to transport (although it's on the large side).Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for LeapFrog Touch Magic Learning Bus
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Today's youngsters are expected to have a basic set of skills and knowledge before entering first grade, or even kindergarten. Letters, letter sounds, numbers, shapes, colors, and a basic vocabulary should all be part of the young learner's repertoire. This can be a fun toy for babies and toddlers, giving them their first chance to build towers. You can have your child group or stack by color or shape.
This toy won the Canadian Concours International du Jouet Educatif Certificate of Excellence. The manufacturer, Quercetti, states that all of their toys are made completely in Italy.
A similar toy, (Learning Resources Stacking Shapes Pegboard), won the 2005 Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Seal Award.
For kids with special needs (including cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, hypotonia, limb-kinetic apraxia, dyspraxia, and other muscle and movement disorders), these can be a great way for them to experience the fun of stacking towers.
This is the easiest set of stacking pegs I've seen. Their large size pegs (about 4-5cm high and wide) are easy for kids to hold, and the bump at the bottom makes them very easy to stack. There is no resistance (like there is with Duplos, for example); the child simply places one on top of the other. Once a peg has been placed on another, the stack won't fall down until your child knocks it down, which is half the fun!
I wish there were a star rating system for "appropriateness for kids with special needs" or "value for developing fine motor skills" each would have received 5 stars.
Therapeutic play suggestions:
Hold each peg just out of reach of the child at various angles (e.g. sit behind your child and hold up a peg so that the child has to turn his body and extend his arm to reach for it, then switch sides for the next peg).
For children who can stand with one arm supporting themselves on a table, put the base on a table (or couch) at the child's waist height. Put all the pieces on the floor (on both sides of the child) so that the child has to bend or squat down to pick them up.
Pros:
The pegs are large (perhaps larger than the ones from when I was a child) and are not a choking hazard, in my opinion
Many ways to play. Younger children can search for the shaker peg under other pegs, take the pegs off the board, dump the pegs off, etc. Older children can build towers, sort the pegs by shape or color, or create designs.
There is one peg that is a shaker/rattle. I didn't have one of these in the set I had as a child, and I think it is a wonderful addition.
The pegs fit together easily. For the most part, it is a loose fit, which is what I was hoping for (rather than a snug fit, which would make it hard for young children to play with because they would have trouble taking the pegs apart).
The pegs are slightly different shapes, instead of all the exact same cylinder shape.
Cons: (Please note that none of these are a big deal, I would certainly purchase this toy again even with these cons)
Some of the pegs have smaller holes and it is harder to fit the other pegs in (mainly the red ones)
The base is a soft, flexible material, instead of a hard plastic (like the one I had as a child). Maybe it said so in the description, and I missed it. This can pose a problem if you want to move the whole toy with the pegs in it; you need two hands to lift it without it bending and pegs falling off. Also makes it a bit harder to store, but I will be making a cloth drawstring bag to keep it in so in the end it isn't a big problem. I should note -the other peg toy I looked at had a foam base, and I really don't like toys with the foam because my son could chew off a piece and they aren't as durable. So, I definitely prefer this flexible base to the foam ones.

When I was a child, we had a peg stacking toy very similar to this. Ours had a hard yellow plastic base with pegs in different colors. I remember how much I loved that toy, so I was looking for something similar for my infant son (7 months). For now, he mainly takes pegs off the board, but I know this toy has lasting value as he will eventually be able to build towers with the pegs, sort the pegs, etc. Overall, I am very please with this toy.Pros:

My daughter is 16 months, and I wish I would have bought this toy sooner. She is loving stacking the pegs, andd putting them off and on the board. She is a hard one to get entertained, so I am impressed. I can see the toy will grow with her too. We will be able to use it for sorting and patterns when she is older. Great toy!Honest reviews on Quercetti Geokid Daisy Maxi
I gave this to my 14 month old daughter for Christmas, and she is really enjoying it and getting a lot of use out of it. I think she is at just the right age for it, developmentally she loves stacking the pegs up as high as she can until the tower falls down. The pieces are a nice large size for small hands. A very simple and straighforward toy...which I consider good no lights, music or bells, just a simple educational toy.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Quercetti Geokid Daisy Maxi
My baby (seven months old) loves this toy. I never would have picked this out for him but we tested it out at a local speciality toy store and he immediately could pick up the pieces and really, really, liked it. When he drops one he just picks up another piece. Now he is picking up the Daisy mat and dumping the plastic cogs (thus learning cause and effect). As he grows he'll learn to stack the pieces. Your baby will love it even if you think they won'tso go for it!Friday, November 21, 2014

Cheap GeoPuzzle World - Educational Geography Jigsaw Puzzle (68 pcs)
I bought this puzzle for my almost 4 y.o. son. He is very interested in geography, and loves puzzles. This puzzle is a little hard for him right now, so I always do it with him. It seems to be pretty durable, and quite a few pieces are shaped like countries (not all of them). I only gave it 3 stars because it's completely missing Antarctica and Arctic Ocean. This was surprising to me.

A great product! I have all the Geopuzzles, and find them fun and educational not only for my grandchildren (and the children and grandchildren of my friends, for whom I buy the puzzles as gifts), but also for me and my friends. It's amazing how much we've forgotten--or never knew--about world geography, and the tangible, colorful, FUN refresher provided by working one of these puzzles is a blast. The new world puzzle is a treat because you can view everything at once, and many of the larger countries have their own pieces. Like the other continent Geopuzzles, this one increases our knowledge of where countries are located vis-a-vis their neighbors, and provides a basis for better understanding of the historical relationships among them.Best Deals for GeoPuzzle World - Educational Geography Jigsaw Puzzle (68 pcs)
This and the other GeoPuzzle maps (of the continents) is a wonderful way to introduce maps and geography to grade-school children. I homeschool and my children are picking up the names and placement of the countries in the world. A great manipulative tool.Honest reviews on GeoPuzzle World - Educational Geography Jigsaw Puzzle (68 pcs)
We just got the World puzzle and already have the other ones. These puzzles are a great teaching tool for all ages. Pieces are shaped like each country (and yes, some countries are way too small to be individual pieces so they're part of other countries...do we really need pea-sized puzzle pieces?), capitals are easy to read and oceans are clearly marked. I really like this company.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for GeoPuzzle World - Educational Geography Jigsaw Puzzle (68 pcs)
This is the best world puzzle we have found so far. My kids love map puzzles and we were trying to find a good map of the world puzzle. My kids love it, I wish that the puzzle itself was a little larger. It was smaller than I was expecting (I didn't review the dimensions before I purchased just the number of pieces). But my kids love it. We also have the Europe puzzle by the same company.Cheap Melissa & Doug Bird House Shape Sorter

This shape sorter is brilliantly conceived. Though intended for babies, its play potential continues well into the preschool years. I highly recommend it for every nursery.
* Charming design. The cheerful yellow-roofed plush house in which shapes are sorted and stored calls many warm and whimsical associations to mind.
* Cleanup and portability. All the birds fit easily into the house with little risk of them falling out. The handle is ideally suited for small children to carry or drag the house about without needing help from a grown-up.
* Safety and durability. No overlooked small parts, no rough edges. The whole thing is cleanly assembled. Should something be cut or torn in time, any adult can repair the damage with scissors and thread.
* Machine washable. No special care required! If you really want to keep the bird's eyes from getting scuffed up, launder them inside a pillowcase. That's it. (Just don't try to launder them *inside* the house. It will take forever to dry.)
* High play potential (aka The Good Stuff).
First, there is the face-purpose of the shape sorter: sorting shapes. This is a nice, cuddly version of a classic toy suitable for very young children. The shapes fit into the house with a little nudge, though the natural rounded-ness of the stuffed plush forms makes the rectangle slightly resistant to going through its straight-edged hole. The walls of the house match the color of the bird meant to fit in each, as a helpful hint.
Second, the birds make great baby toys all on their own. One rattles, one jingles, one crinkles, and one squeaks (though I doubt children will figure out how to work the squeaker until well into their first year). The sturdy wings won't suffer from being chewed on, while the fuzzy fabric of their bodies makes them pleasant to hold. Sized for baby-toddler hands, the birds are a wonderful exploratory toy in their own right, even before children rise to the challenge of shape-sorting.
Third, the birds are adorable, with bright eyes and perky beaks that make them look perpetually inquisitive, garnering their inclusion in a host of make-believe games. They've been welcome at tea parties, in princess castles, on Jack Sparrow's shoulder and on Babar jungle safari. There's an aura about them that's irresistible. Even when shape sorting has lost its educational appeal, the birds still come along.
Melissa and Doug have produced a real winner in this shape-sorter. It is a lovely, practical, multi-use baby toy that children will be a long time in outgrowing.
As far as a shape sorter goes... this is a pretty poor example. The birds are over stuffed and do not fit into their respective holes. In addition, if one DOES manage to a get a bird in to the house through it's hole, there isn't really enough room for all of the birds unless the house is busting at it's seems.
The birds are cute, the house is cute, but it just doesn't live up to it's claim of being a shape sorter. My ten month old never plays with this toy and shows zero interest in it. Not even just to play with the birds.

Grandma and Grandpa purchased Melissa & Doug Deluxe Fish Bowl Jumbo Knob Puzzle and Melissa & Doug Bird House Shape Sorterfor our grandaughter (10 months old) for Christmas. She loves her new toys and is learning their names and colors. Everything about the toys is super. Thank you. GrandmaBest Deals for Melissa & Doug Bird House Shape Sorter
I have not seen any babies playing with this toy so I can't review it in that capacity but what I can say is that the person I bought this for thought this was a very cute toy for her baby. The only drawback is that the birds have eyes that can come off. Babies really like the crinkly squishy shapes, and it would have been better if the birds didn't have eyes that can come off and become choking hazards. It says its for babies 8 months and above probably because of the eyes. Of course any babies younger wouldn't know how to use the shape sorter but they would probably enjoy feeling the birds and squishing them and chewing on them. Without the eyes I think this toy would be for a broader age range.Honest reviews on Melissa & Doug Bird House Shape Sorter

Reviews of Cross - Section Ear Model
I home school my son. I bought this so I could not only discuss the senses, but explain the parts of the ear and what each part does. It is a really good product! It is made of a foam and it is sturdy. I don't have to worry about it breaking in a move (we move a lot). I highly recommend this product as well as the one for they eye, the brain, the cell, and any other visual aid model that this company makes! If My son attended public school, I would probably gift a few to the class because it is that valuable a learning tool!

Quite disappointed and wished I had zoomed in and studied the picture in the ad. It is just a 1 dimensional sticker stuck on a slab of dense foam ! Could have done that myself with clipart. Not worth the high price for that.Best Deals for Cross - Section Ear Model
We purchased this as an addition to our homeschooling curriculum. It's foam and very durable which means the granddaughter can handle it as much as she wants. Parts of the ear are written on one half of the ear, just as noted in the description. Even for adults it's a very interesting and educational tool. I would not call it a toy as there would be no reason to put it in a toy box, but as far as homeschoolers and other school children, this is a necessary item for health/science education as it goes further into detail than regular health school books do. Most classrooms don't have items like this, but they should!Saturday, October 4, 2014

LeapFrog Leapster Educational Game: Don Lápiz Aprender a Reviews
I got this for my 5 year old son and he loves it!
My main reason for purchasing was that it is in Spanish and by the end of the day he was recognizing and repeating the instructions / words in Spanish.
It's one of his favorite cartridges! I have to time his playtime with it because if I left it up to him he'd be playing all day!
Would highly recommend it!I got this for my son and daughter 4 and 5. They love it they both are bilingual, I want them to learn Spanish very well, and this game is great for their learning. It teaches them how to write letters and number, color combining, puzzles, and much more. Im happy with this purchase.

It's easy on my eyes and there are lots of different things in this toy for my baby to play with. The details are very thoughtful (hard plastic leaf that acts as a teether, tiny mirror, lots of crinkly plastic) and make this a really great improvement on the usual soft books that are out there.

My son, age 6 months loves this toy. If he's not turning pages, he is chewing on the leaf. The loop that attaches it to things is not very strong so he can easily pull it off his stroller or car seat if I have attached it but it's still worth it. This is one of the most entertaining items we have had. Plus, it's cute. You can't beat the design.Best Deals for Skip Hop Treetop Friends Soft Activity Book
this has become my baby's favorite chewable, crinkly toy. at 5 months, she loves to put just about anything in her mouth, and this book has lots of different parts that interest my baby, and her favorite part so far is the owl on the front page. for washing, i generally throw it in a clothes net, and wash it under gentle cycle and air dry it.Honest reviews on Skip Hop Treetop Friends Soft Activity Book

When I purchased this guitar for my daughter it was only $40, which I felt was a good value. My daughter is thrilled with it, even though she doesn't know how to do anything more than just strum it and make up silly songs. It's not a toy, but I'd consider it to be just above a toy in quality, which is something I would expect from a $40 guitar. Since I have no way of knowing how serious my daughter is going to be about learning to play guitar, I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something she might only pick up a couple of times, but at the same time I wanted her to have something that was a little more than a toy.
The main problem with this guitar is that it doesn't hold its tune. I have to tune it every time we get it out, and I don't mean that I just have to tweak each string a little. I mean that it ends up so hideously out of tune just from sitting in the closet that even listening to my daughter just aimlessly strumming it is impossible.
I'm not a guitarist, though, I'm just someone who picks up the guitar occasionally and can strum a few chords and play an easy song or two. So I don't know if newer guitars need to be "broken in" ... maybe given some time the guitar will hold its tune better? Or maybe by suggesting such a thing I've just lost all credibility ... :-)
At any rate, I see that this instrument is now selling on Amazon for about twice what I paid for it. Given what I know now, there's no way I would pay $80 for this guitar. I know you can't expect a professional quality sound for $80, but I think you should at least be able to keep it in tune.
