Cheap FingerTech "Viper" R/C Robot Kit

After robogames last year my eight year old daughter wanted to build a combat robot. She was able to assemble this kit entirely by herself in about 1.5 hours by following the included instructions. She has some experience soldering and likes to work with her hands. The kit has survived bashing around our arena and falls from 3 feet repeatedly. She is working on a mold for the vacuum former to improve the top armor which from stock looks like it is only 0.0625. Fingertech has worked hard to put a set of robust components together at a reasonable price with excellent documentation. If you like to work with sheet metal, you could put this kit together for slightly less, but quality costs money and their engineering and planning is totally worth the price of entry for what you will learn about how to put together a small robot.

Anatex wall products very well made. Strong.

I have a busy office and kids here are Very Active. It has not broke yet. Many use this as a "ladder" to get onto the table. The wire bent, but did not break yet.

I mounted the unit into the wall stud for strength. I used my own mounting hardware.

My wife and I bought this toy to donate to the public library in town. The kids needed something to play with so they wouldn't beat on the books. This is perfect! It's a kid magnet and definitely is holding up to a little abuse. It's bolted to the wall and has kids pulling on it all day every day and it still works fine. It's like a kid magnet too. What more could one ask for? It's great.

Multiplication Practice Math Machine Review

I had a toy similar to this when I was a kid learning my times tables. It was laid out in this grid, and I pulled levers for each number to reveal the answer. I loved quizzing myself, and learned the multiplication tables very quickly.

Now that my kids are learning the times tables, I have searched far and wide for a toy that has all of the numbers, 1-9, laid out in this grid, knowing that the grid helps the student find patterns and see relationships that you miss when using flash cards or something similar. I've even searched websites to find a grid layout game online, and couldn't find it.

I found this toy, but hesitated because it didn't look like very high quality (there is another, similar toy on the market that got bad reviews because of its poor quality). I finally caved and ordered this toy, since I hadn't found anything else similar, and my daughter really needed some help seeing the big picture. When it arrived, I was surprised at how heavy it is. Though the numbers are only printed on stickers that are placed on the plastic (I wish the numbers were printed directly on the plastic), the toy itself seems fairly well-made. I'm still not sure how long the springs will last, as we just received the toy today. But I do have a better first impression than I expected.

Purchased for my 6 yr old who loves math and loves to push buttons. He has started to memorize the multiplication tables using this toy. Afraid he'll be better at math than me in no time. It's easy to read (the answers pop up in red text on the bottom side of the button when pressed), easy to use, great layout/format, quiet, requires no batteries, and is great for travel. The numbers on the buttons are on stickers (not etched or painted on), but I have not had a problem with that.

My son loves the TV show Ni Hao, Kai-Lan and I enjoy watching it too. I knew he would enjoy playing this game and I was right. The Leapfrog Clicksart products are a great tool in giving children their first experience with computers. I like how the game interacts with my son letting him know when to use the keypad, mouse, etc. The game also lets him know when he is correct and encourages him when he provides a wrong answer until he gets it right. I am impressed.

I had high hopes for this game...maybe my daughter just is not old enough (she is almost 4) but she is not that into it, but really i think the control is difficult and frustrates her. The games are not that interesting either. She did enjoy seeing her favorite characters on the screen though, so kudos for that, but doesnt hold her interest that long.

This globe is a big hit in my office, too bad i cant keep people from touching it and messing up with the rotation! i have seen other floating globes for much more expensive than this one. Here's how the game works:

The three Little Creatures get a head start on Max. You roll the two dice, and you either get two green dots, two black dots, or one of each green dots move the creatutes, black dots move Max. If you roll double green you can move one creature two spaces or two creatures one space. Each creature has its own shortcut to skip a corner, but it has to land on it exactly. Max can take all the shortcuts, and he doesn't have to land on them exactly, but he does miss them if you roll double black. You also have four treats. Giving Max a treat makes him go all the way back to his house, but once the four treats are used up they are gone. Max also goes back to his house if he catches a creature. My understanding of the game is that it's difficult to get all three creatures safely to the tree, but it's almost impossible for Max to catch all three creatures.

While the game is driven by rolling the dice to see whether you move the creatures or Max, the child has two decisions to make:

1. Which creature(s) to move

You have to learn how to balance movement among the three creatures, and how to arrange it so that a creature lands exactly on the entrance to its shortcut. Older children will realize that sometimes you have to let Max catch one of the creatures to make sure that the other two get home safely.

2. When to give Max a treat

To do this properly you have to be able to predict the furthest Max could move on the next dice roll, and whether that puts any of the creatures in danger. If you give Max treats too often you'll run out, not often enough and he'll catch the other creatures.

I bought this game for my youngest nephew because I'm an avid gamer but, at 4 years, he was a little young for most games. He really likes this game because he gets to participate in every turn. He got a little upset at the thought of the small animals getting eaten by Max, so his mom changed it so that Max just sends them back to his house at the beginning of the path and they stay there, instead of going to the tree at the end (more like "catching" them than actually "eating" them).

I like that the game is cooperative, with all players moving all the creatures little chance for hurt feelings at the end of the game. There can still be turn-taking in the form of who gets to roll the dice, and who gets priority over movement decisions. I also like that there is some strategy to the game, unlike Candy Land which is purely chance-driven. This is also a game that a child can play by herself.

I really appreciate all that this game strives to be in terms of 'co-operative' game playing, but in terms of how the physical game is manufactured, it's a bit lacking.

1. The board itself is tiny. When you put young children around a standard table to play it, their arms aren't long enough to reach the board at all (with a bigger board everyone could at least reach the side closest to them) and if you put it on a very small table, adults are knocking knees and getting a backache.

2. There are times when the critters have to share a board space, but the spaces aren't big enough to fit two, let alone all three critters. If two or three game pieces can end up on one space, the space should have room for them.

3. Max's cat treats have no 'holding' area. We are instructed to put them 'off the board'. Why wasn't a holding area created on the board? Again, the board should be bigger.

4. The game pieces Max, critters, and treats are all just pieces of simple cardboard. Flimsy and cheap.

5. The board bends in half (to fit in the box), but they put the fold vertically on the board and the lumpy bumpy seam affects game play in three(!) places. If the seam was horizontal, it would only affect game play in one place. Arg.

The story and flow of the game is fairly smart but the design and manufacture of it is not so much. Especially for the price.

My 5 year old grandson absolutely loved this game and didn't want to stop playing. I thought it was great because we worked as a team to beat the cat. It wasn't about winning as an individual, but winning for the critters so the cat wouldn't catch and eat them. It was great fun to watch my grandson think through what he should do next in order for the critters to get home safely. I would highly recommend it for children ages 4 to 10.

My preschool age daughter loves board games, but I can only take so much of Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders, or Hi Ho Cherry-O. Max is so much better than the "regular" board games you find at stores like Target. The objective of this game is to get the squirrel, mouse, and bird to safety before the cat Max gets to them. You roll the dice to determine if Max moves or the little creatures move. When Max gets too close, you can call him back to the starting point for a treat. Kids and adults can work together to try to get the little creatures to safety. My preschool age daughter has no trouble figuring out the rules and she enjoys calling Max back for a treat. Like I mentioned before, some preschool games get old real quick for adults, but Max is entertaining for all ages. The only complaint that I have is that the pieces are made of cardboard paper. I think it would be more appealing and durable if they have little plastic figures for the animals.

This is a great game!!! It teaches children about the food web, differing perspectives (i.e. cat, small animals), strategy (to call Max back or not), patience, how to follow game rules, turn taking, and strategy (to move one animal two spaces or two animals one space, deciding which animal to move first, calling back Max or not). Besides all of that, it's really fun. I would highly recommend this game to any parent or care giver of small children over three.

I was one of the beta testers for this product, but other than that I have no connection with Dr Awesome, who created it (and yes of course that's his real name! It must be, right?). I thought I'd best be upfront about that, but I have not been paid for a review, and the following are my honest opinions. I cannot be bought!

My daughter is three, and shall we say challenging? I practice gentle parenting and do not agree with time-outs or other punitive punishments. I also do not like reward charts (have a read of Alfie Kohn to find out why). So finding a way to discipline my child can be hard.

I tried out the Awesome Deck of Awesome and fully did not expect it to be much good for us. I didn't expect my little girl to be interested in the cards or earning them, but I was wrong!

First, I let her look at them but made it clear they were mine. She spent happy time sorting them out into piles of girls' and boys' ones (my beta deck was a neutral deck with cards for both sexes) and decided on her favourites.

She was then very keen to earn them by being awesome! I allowed her to keep them and gave her a purse to put them in. I now need a new deck because she has nearly all of them and refuses to give them back! I guess I should have made it clear to her that they were currency so I didn't run out, but she is too young to want to use them to buy treats for her, they ARE the treat. But that is great, because that is why and how they work.

With older children it would definitely work to get them to spend cards to buy treats.

It focuses attention on the positive behaviour rather than the negative and offers opportunities for "bad" behaviour to be turned around and made awesome to earn a card. My daughter has grasped the concept of "being awesome" and even issues me with cards if she feels I have been awesome enough, which is super-cute and also makes it much more holistic. We are each of us both the teacher and the student.

The cards are fun, and although it might feel sexist to have girls' decks and boys' decks, we beta testers did ensure that designs were not focused on prettiness or being "feminine" so they are really just more focused designs than pigeonholing genders. I was pretty vocal about that in the beta testing!

It's surprising how many ways you can use the cards and how versatile they are all ages the Awesome Deck of Awesome blog has more ideas for how to use them.

In all, a great gentle parenting resource that you can use in loads of fun ways.

Theses cards are an 'awesome' tool for any parent. As a homeschooling mother of a special needs child, they are triple the awesome. These cards can be used in many ways to promote positive reinforcement in your household. My daughter was prone to giving up in her studies when she got something wrong. With theses cards and the promise of a reward for tasks accomplished, my daughter has been much more focused in her studies. I highly recommend them.
