Ingenio Bilingual Smart Projector

Anyone looking for a great product with age versatility and high capacity to empower children's creativity needs to consider Ingenio's Bilingual Smart Projector. The educational aspect of this product is also extremely beneficial. My 8-year old does not gravitate to activities involving pencil & paper. With Ingenio's Smart Projector, I can now get her to concentrate for at least an hour. While creating and coloring pictures, sharpening bilingual skills and learning proper letter formation, she thinks she is just having fun. Now my biggest issue is trying to get my 3-year old to wait for her turn.

Right now my 4 year old is very much into writing his name and learning the alphabet while my 3 year old loves to draw in general. The Smart Play Smart Projector is an awesome product for both of them to enjoy for years to come. Setting up the Smart Projector was super easy and it is just the turn of a knob to turn it on and push of a button to change out the slides. There are four slides total that sit nicely in slots when not in use that feature animals, numbers and letters. There are also slots for crayons to store so you are always ready to start drawing! My 3 year old can turn it on/off by himself and put in the slides himself too, although I had to teach him to be careful. I cannot say enough good things about this product as I really think it is great for ages 3 and up and I probably would have loved it myself just to draw and trace the animals through 10 years old! It is so cool how the light shines down and projects the image you have the slide on so you can easily trace it. I remember using stencils or tracing images from underneath paper, but by projecting the image it makes it cleaner and easier to draw I think. This is also a product great for both boys and girls!

This toy worked as advertised and intrigued my 4 1/2 year old BUT it is so light weight it skids off the paper or desk. Child gets frustrated. I am going to try gluing on pieces of the non-skid material I use under rugs and hope it works.

I bought this for my grandson age 4. Other than the day he opened the gift, he hasn't touched it. He really can't use it without help. The toy is top heavy and falls over easily, the magnification is too small, and the toy itself is flimsy. The cartridges are difficult for even an adult to change.Ingenio Bilingual Smart Projector

My 4 year old son is big into super heroes and loves his new smart cycle game! He just recently got it, so I don't know too much about the game itself, but he sat in his room peddling away for 45 minutes without taking a break!! It was added excitement for him when he got to wear the 3D glasses to do the racing portion. We are very happy with this purchase!

Ereadbook World Classic Fairy Tales Collection 8 Books - Talking Review

Ereadbook World Classic Fairy Tales Collection 8 Books - Talking Books Chinese
Customer Ratings: 4 stars
Buy Now
We just got this set of eight books and are having a lot of fun with them. Very colorful illustrated versions of Little Red Riding Hood (missing in the product detail images on this page), The Frog Prince, The Sad Prince, Snow White, Pinocchio, The Emperor's New Clothes, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty.

You set the eReadbook pen to each book by touching to the logo on the book's cover, then set the volume with the visible volume control printed inside the book. Then you read through the book by touching both the written (simplified chinese and pinyin) text and the images. They work together, with a lot of the dialogue not being in the text, but rather when you touch the characters illustrated on the page. This adds a lot of interest and fun for the child, as each character has a different voice and speaks his lines with great emotion! Many other details on the pages can be touched to add further sound input: most of the animals either speak or make animal sounds, flowers and backgrounds play music, water splashes etc.

There is no English, and much of the body of the storytelling is in touching the illustrations, so it takes a reasonable comprehension of Chinese to make good use of these books. Of course knowing these classic tales in advance helps a lot with understanding the chinese if you are a learner. We are at an elementary level (I have been learning for three years on my own) and can understand most if listened to several times.

It would have been better if when the text was touched with the pen, that it was read sentence by sentence. Instead when you touch the text, it reads the whole page at once, rather quickly. You can touch a "stop" button at the top of each page, but that just stops where it is at when you stop it, and when you restart it begins all over from the start of the page. This can be quite annoying if you just don't catch the last four words: you have to listen to the whole paragraph over and over to catch the last words. You also cannot just click on just one character or pinyin word to hear it (at least that I understand: the instructions are in Chinese). The "beginning English" book included with the eReadbook Starter Set has the feature I wish they had put in these storybooks: it reads only a sentence at a time. So you can click on only the third sentence in a paragraph and hear that repeated. I guess they were made for fluent Chinese speakers learning English and not the other way round.

The illustrations vary from digital picturebook type drawings to quite flowery manga-type illustrations for the princess stories, but they are all very very full of details and brilliant color.

Each spread also has a "game" function. Once again you need to be able to understand spoken basic chinese, but when you touch the game icon at the top of each page, instead of reading the story, it prompts you to find things on the page, ie "there is a little caterpillar, little friend can you find it?" "There are six little birds on the page, can you count them?" and then says "great! good job! wonderful! you're so smart!" when you touch the right objects, or " sorry, try again! that's wrong! once more!" if you touch the wrong ones.

All in all, an excellent elementary/intermediate set for storytelling and listening practice in Chinese, with a lot of interaction, fun discoveries on the pages, colorful illustrations, engaging voices and games. Recommended.

My 7 year old son loves Star Wars The Clone Wars, so I knew he would like this.

The best thing about the game is the questions get more difficult as the player advances within the chosen level. So, though it may start with single digit number recognition, it advances to double digit number recognition. It may start with asking about general time of day, but then advances to specific time of day and then to reading time on a digital clock.

I recommend this game for pre-K through second grade.

A more detailed description is presented below.

______________________________________________

SPACE

Shoot the correct number to get to navigate through space to get to the ship where the prisoner is held.

Level 1: features recognition of numbers 1 through 10.

Level 2: features subtraction of single digit numbers.

Level 3: features addition of a two digit number with a single digit number.

THE SHIP

To get through the rooms, answer questions about time.

Level 1: questions feature time of day, like when do you usually leave for school (morning, afternoon, evening)?

Level 2: learn how to read time on an analogue clock to the hour.

Level 3: learn to read time on an analogue clock to the half hour.

LIGHTSABER DUEL

Answer the math questions quickly and Skywalker attacks. Answer incorrectly and the enemy attacks. The faster the player answers, the more power they get for their attack.

I purchased this for my 7-year-old son's Leapster ahead of a long road trip. He ejoyed it that day, but returning home I found he was rarely willing to play with it during his free time (losing out to Legos and PS2 Lego Star Wars). I decided to set acheivement goals on Jedi Math as a condition of other play. Unfortunately, Jedi Math isn't particularly suitable for this use. Certainly, "saving a prisoner" is a nice discrete goal (takes 15-30 minutes, and this accomplishment is verifiable in the user stats). However, the difficulty level is entirely selectable (the child can choose a level that is not challenging). Further, while the game emphasizes fast math calculations, there appears to be no penalty for either pausing the game to count on fingers or asking for the solution via the "hint" button. My son quickly discovered both strategies. There is a "math level" that is tracked in the user stats, but the instructions don't describe how this is calculated. That is, what skill set does a particular math level correspond to?

The newer Leapster2 can upload data to leapfrog.com's "learning path". Supposedly, this allows you to track your child's learning, so my objections might not be valid in the context of a Leapster2. But with the Leapster, unless your child is particularly enthralled by this game, using it as a teaching tool is awkward.

This toy is a lot of fun for my son. He shakes it to music, bangs it like a drum, and carries it around. He hits it with other toys and so far it has not suffered any damage.

However, this seller is charging AS MUCH for this toy as I paid for a 6-piece set. Buyer beware and shop around for prices. I bought the Edushape Baby's 1st Birthday music set, which came with 5 instruments (including this drum) and a CD for $20 on sale. The regular price was $25. I dont know why this seller is getting away with selling one piece from that set for $20!!!

I bought this drum for my 1 year old to pound on. It has lasted a few months. I am not sure if she sat on it or it was stepped on, or if was simply leaned on, but the siding is a thin piece of decorated cardboard that is woven together at the seams. The top and bottom fit into grooves in the plastic pieces. No adhesive or anything holds it together. The siding has crinkled and collapsed beyond straightening out and the cardboard has come out of the grooves. I have seen other reviews that mention this product should last forever. I doubt it. The sound is great, the rest of the toy is great, but it is held together with cardboard. Junk.

Best Deals for Drum Musical Toy

This drum is perfect for the under-5 child who wants to have fun banging on a drum while marching around the house. It is not a true musical instrument for the budding Neil Peart drummer virtuoso in your family. It is durable, as both of our under-5 boys not only bang on it, but they also stand on it, sling it around the house, and play on it. Also, the rope that holds it around the child's neck has a plastic disconnector so it won't choke our sons nor hurt their necks.

Honest reviews on Drum Musical Toy

Great drum for a 2year old. My grandson is very active and has even attempted to stand on top of the drum and it is still perfect. When you think drum, you think loud; but, not the case. I love the break-away strap (the strap that goes around his neck), sometimes it breaks away too easily, but ; better safe than sorry. :) I read the reviews on this item prior to purchasing and noticed that a couple of people complained about the drumsticks that came with the drum. So I purchased a separate pair of drumsticks when I purchased the drum and I'm glad I did. He definitely liked those drumsticks a lot better than the drumsticks that came with the drum. Overall a great product and I would definitely recommend.

It wasn't clear to me from the pictures and the other reviews but these letters do have exposed small magnets in the back. So definitely a chocking hazard. The Leap Frog letters are covered so that's an alternative.

I purchased the uppercase set and had to purchase the lowercase magnetic letters too. This set is wonderful and colorful. They are bigger with more magnetics that really stick well to the fridge. My two year loves to move the letters around and knows his alphabet based on these letters. I am very happy with the purchase.

We bought 2 sets of lower case and one set of upper case letters and love them. We painted a wall with chalkboard paint and added the magnet additive so the letters would stick to the wall. It's been great fun! My 5-year-old uses the letters to practice words she's learning to read at school and to make new words and "write" whole sentences. Then we "write" sentences for her to read -instructions for tasks she's to perform, clues to surprises etc. Even my 18-mos-old twin sons are getting into the act.

Insect Lore Live Butterfly Pavilion Reviews

Insect Lore Butterfly Pavilion
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars
Buy Now
My son (age 5) got this from his grandparents for Christmas and it has been terrific fun for all of us. The first set of ten caterpillars grew visibly day-by-day, then pupated and emerged as butterflies in a few weeks. There is a lot of great information about painted lady and other butterfly species online and having this project got my son very interested in how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly so soon I found myself showing him multi-colored pictures of imaginal discs (the larval structures that produce the butterfly wing, leg etc. during metamorphosis) online at websites I found--a great way to get him interested in developmental biology. The first time we talked about this he decided they were actually "magical discs", given what these groups of cells can do...the whole process has been very entertaining for the whole family.... It is also really fun to have butterflies flitting around and caterpillars growing in the pavilion in the kitchen when it is gray and wintery outside.

How to raise more than one generation of critters inside:

Since we sent our coupon for larvae out immediately after Christmas, we had butterflies dancing around the pavilion and mating in February when there were no plants outside to collect for the next generation of caterpillars to eat. Anticipating this, I ordered a mallow plant and some additional larval food from Carolina Biological Supply Company at about the time when our caterpillars turned into chrysalises: there is an online store and the stuff to get is the L918 culture medium (144040). This will feed about 80 larvae. (Unfortunately the Insect Lore company, which makes the Pavilion, only sells caterpillar food in small quantities along with additional larvae, which we certainly didn't need).

How to do it: We set the mallow plant in the pavilion and the butterflies laid their eggs on the leaves where we could watch them darken and emerge as very tiny 1mm long new caterpillars. After 4-5 days of watching the caterpillars eat the mallow plant (making little tracks on the leaves) we prepared them new homes in caterpillar media. To do this, you can use either the original plastic containers that the first generation larvae are shipped in (clean them out and dish wash them) or use another small clear-sided plastic or glass jar with a lid. Clean the containers well (I wiped the inside with a paper towel with isopropyl alcohol on it after dishwashing to kill bacteria, which will contaminate the food and make the larvae sick). The food will come in two plastic containers (nearly full). One of these can be frozen for subsequent generations. Transfer the contents of one container to a covered microwaveable container and heat on medium in the microwave (swirling every 10-30 seconds to mix and avoid overheating) until it is a solution. Pour media into the bottoms of the larvae containers to a depth of about a quarter inch (this will make 4-5 new containers). If there is a lot of condensation on the sides after the media has hardened, you can wipe this away with a paper towel--I did this, but then again alcohol-wiped the inside solid surfaces and lid above the media. Cover the containers loosely (leave the lid slightly ajar) and put them somewhere to dry. I laid a clean paper towel over the collection of covered jars to keep dust/dirt from drifting in given the activity level of the children here. After a couple days of drying, these were ready for larvae. If necessary (ie., if not using the previously shipped containers) make very, very small air holes in the lid. Then use a toothpick or matchstick to collect each 2-4 mm long larva off of the mallow plant leaves and tap to drop them into the new container. Put a clean paper towel over the top of the container (under the lid) and re-cap the jar--now the paper will serve as a scaffold for new chrysalises to hang from and will allow air in while preventing the tiny caterpillars from escaping. Try to be relatively aseptic about this.

It appears that we're going to get about 20-30 new caterpillars from the first generation, which I should be able to accommodate with the larvae cups made above...hopefully by the time we've run out of this food and been through a couple more generations it will be summer and warm enough to release all of the butterflies we have outside. The pavilion is well made and sturdy enough that it should accommodate many other projects involving insects. All in all, we've been entirely pleased with this--a great gift that's had my son on the phone describing his butterflies' recent development to grandma and grandpa several times!

One more tip: the adult butterflies seem to become upended on the floor of the pavillion at times while they are flapping around and have trouble gaining traction to right themselves on the slick nylon surface. This shortened the lives of several of ours until I saw it happening and put some packing material (like easter straw) in there for them to stand on.

My [kid] got this and shared it with her (...) class. They followed the instructions to the letter. Finally out came a whole bunch of the ugliest moth-looking like creatures. All of the children were so disappointed. Here they had seen the cover of the box with these orange painted lady butterflies! I called the company and they so nicely explained that these are not the colorful American Painted Lady butterflies. They are a different species that are much more gray and moth looking. We even had a bug expert come in to my daughter's class and tell us the "butterflies" sure looked like moths to her too! My question is, "Why does the company show colorful orange butterflies on the package when that is not what they are sending?" Very disappointing and not worth the money.

Best Deals for Insect Lore Live Butterfly Pavilion

This item is extremely durable which can be used over and over for future butterfly raising. It isn't the usual cardboard and cellophane that some "bug kits" are comprised of. A fine mesh enclosure with secure opening allows children to observe the beautiful butterflies grow to maturity. My child is enthralled with the learning experience this toy provides!

Honest reviews on Insect Lore Live Butterfly Pavilion

Both of us being 'nature buffs', my 6 year old son and I had a wonderful time with this.

We sent away for our catarpillars (every day he would say, 'have they come in yet'?) and when they arrived, put them in the habitat.

When I was a little girl, I caught a bunch of catarpillars, put them in a shoebox, with grass, leaves and whatever else I thought they might eat. I punched holes in the shoe box lid and then covered the box, and basically forgot about it until a few days or so, opened it and saw my catarpillars had made cocoons. Before long, they were moths and I remember how excited I was to see them!

With this habitat, you get to WATCH the whole process of metamorphosis and it is truly amazing AND educational!! When they finally transformed into butterflies, my son was so thrilled, altho a little saddened when we had to set them free.

I'm thinking about purchasing this again, one for my son and myself, and also one for his second grade teacher so his whole class can enjoy the experience.

If your child enjoys the wonders of natures and would love to witness the miracle of transformation of catarpillars into butterflies, this is DEFINATELY well worth the money!

LeapFrog Tag Junior Book: ABC Animal Orchestra (works Review

LeapFrog Tag Junior Book: ABC Animal Orchestra
Customer Ratings: 5 stars
Buy Now
ABC Animal Orchestra cardboard book for the Tag Jr.

It features every letter from A-Z, sometimes displaying one letter per page, sometimes two. Each letter is accompanied by a cute animal playing a musical instrument, both the animal and the instrument's name start with the letter in question, which makes it more interesting.

I'm not sure if it was just the one I got, but my book was not bright and as such the colors did not come alive. The printing was way too dark for a child's book. Still, you get over this fact quickly enough with the great sounds that come out from each page.

So, what "interactive" parts does this book have?

Pressing the Tag Jr. on the letters once says the letter out loud, subsequent pressings prompt the user with questions such as "Which animal's name starts with the letter D?".

Pressing the Tag Jr. on the animals once produces the sound of the instrument he/she is holding, press again and the device ask with what letter the animal in question's name starts.

Another activity that I found pretty fun was when you tapped your little Tag Jr. on a Cat, after a few tries the device asks you to find another cat in your book, so you have to go on and find the Jaguar or the Tiger.

The last two pages have a spread out animal orchestra with the complete alphabet above them. Pressing on the letters plays a cute rendition of the ABC song. Pressing on the animals here has the same effect here as in previous pages with the exception that sometimes they play an instrumental version of the alphabet song, which is nice too.

Overall it's a cute book, but don't expect a story here, it's exactly what it claims to be, an ABC Animal Orchestra book.

I own the entire Tag Junior library. Check out my reviews before buying books! (I wish I had researched before buying them all!)

This is one that is truly appropriate for the full range specified. Even my 15-month-old daughter loves it and benefits from an alphabet introduction.

Yet, it is not just an ABC book. It is also an animal book and a musical book. It builds vocabulary, it is entertaining, and it periodically challenges your older Tag Junior user to a book-wide search for things. It does show the upper and lower case letters, which as an elementary educator I love. My 3-year-old looked at me with a pretend grumpy face and said, "that gorilla looks grumpy, like this." I thought that was so cute and funny. What I also like about this book is that it doesn't feature the usual "instruments" and has things like Kangaroo's Kazoo, Newt's Nose Flute, Quails' quartet, Tiger's turntable, Yak's yodel, Armadillo's accordian, Cat's congas, Dingo's didgeridoo, Gorilla's gong, Jaguar's jug, Iguana's Indian bells, and so forth. Even my 4½ -year old got a kick out of the newt playing a flute with its nose.

I gave this book "full credit" because it is a good value given that it will benefit the full range specified and then some. Not only that but it's just a cool kids' book. Cool, modern, non-licensed illustrations. LeapFrog thought outside the box on this one and I love it. Don't hesitate.

This is a great starter Tag Jr. book, and has a lot of places for kids to touch with the Tag or Tag Jr. reader and get some fun responses. This makes for great interactive play.

We use this with the Tag reader. ANY Tag Jr. book works with the Tag Reader (that is not true the other way around). So despite the fact that we're not quite ready for Tag books, we bought the Tag reader because it works with both types of books.

Honest reviews on LeapFrog Tag Junior Book: ABC Animal Orchestra (works

My 18-month-old daughter got this book with her Tag Jr. system. It really holds her attention. Each animal (A-Z) has several different noises/sounds/activities. Example: you can push the gorilla several times one for "G", one for "Gorilla" and one for the Gorilla sound and one for the sound of the instrument the Gorilla is playing. It's very silly and cute.

There is just a lot going on with this book. Each page has an animal and instrument beginning with the letter for the page, but it's too much for my 22 month son. He loves books, but he hasn't even looked through every page of this book yet. He will look at the first page, then start flipping till the end. We do like the last page where it plays the ABC song! That's our best and favorite part. Maybe he will grow into it? If he does, I'll update the review.

Teach My Toddler Shapes was given to our one year young great niece. It fits into the bag which her mom brings whenever anyone watches her so that the babysitters can work with her using this educational toy. She can find the shapes, and match the puzzle pieces, but she does not have the dexterity to get them into their place on the foam board, we have to help. She loves looking at the shapes on the poster and when we ask, she can point to some that we name. This little one loves to learn and whenever she sees the transparent plastic envelope with this toy inside, she fusses until we place it on the floor and play it with her. Someone is always with her when she uses this toy, teaching and encouraging her. Also at one year, she tends to be a bit rough and if you want this toy to last, supervision is in order. FUN and a very worthwhile purchase.

We bought this to add to my 9-year-old son's Snap Circuits Jr. set. Wow, we thought the first set was fun but with this added kit it got even better! He can do this all on his own and has so much fun making things. So far his favorites have been the AM radio and the radio announcer. This keeps him entertained for hours. Although this kit is new he has had snap circuits for six months and he is still playing with them regularly. This is a GREAT toy for a kid interested in building or science. I LOVE THIS TOY!

An add-on to the 11 yr olds set. She has fun doing all the projects. She figures them out and assembles them on her own. The one con: it doesn't explain the HOW and WHY it works.

Honest reviews on Elenco Snap Circuits UC-30 Upgrade Kit SC-100 to SC-300

My seven year old son loved the Snap Circuit Jr that he received for Christmas; completed all the electronic experiments in just about 2 months. So it made sense to purchase the UC-30 Upgrade Kit SC-100 to SC-300 and see where his love of electronics would take him. He makes his own experiments now and still plays with both sets every few days. I worried that the pieces would break easily, but that seems to have been an unfounded concern. The storage trays make it easy to keep all the pieces together, although the cardboard boxes are really beat up. Next purchase: hard plastic carrying case.

My boys got this upgrade for Christmas (6 and 8). It's a nice addition to the Snap Circuits Jr. SC-100 kit and I'm considering the next upgrade. If something goes wrong with your kit, Elenco has great customer service and you can order individual parts from their website.

My daughter was 19 months when she got this toy and she has had it for about 2 months and she loves it. It keeps her attention longer than any toy we have. I would highly recommend it. In fact, I am online to find more cartridges or roms for it.

My daughter is 26 months old and she absolutely loves her learn through music. The microphone broke pretty easily because she carried the toy by it but other than that not too much to complain about. She learnt the words very quickly and thoroughly wnjoys the toy. I would not hesitiate to buy this toy again even if this one broke.

I purchased this item thinking it would fit the new "Learn Through Music Touchpad" I purchased for my 2 year old grandson. It must be cartridge for an earlier version of the toy, because it would not fit in the new one I had purchased. I was raked over the coals by Amazon for not only return shipping, but also for the original cost to ship it to me. I recommend that the description of this cartridge include the fact that it will not fit any newer touchpad. After contacting Amazon customer service a refund was issued for the shipping. Thank you, Amazon.

This is by far my 2 year old's favorite cartridge for his learn through music machine. He has so many other cartridges for it but always goes back to this sesame street one. He started playing with it when he was 20 months old & 7 months later...it's still his "go to" toy. Only complaint is that we had to purchase this cartridge twice because he plays with it so much the photo inner liner gets jammed and won't move. We gladly replaced it because it's his favorite toy ever! He can answer all of the questions the cartridge asks. It's a winner!
