Review of LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game System - Pink

LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game System - Pink

Some of the other reviewer didn't like the new smaller screen, but it didn't seem to bother my child & I liked it because I could use screen protectors meant for the PSP (you just have to trim some of the length)to save the screen from smudges and scratches.

If you are trying to decide between this and the L-Max, I'd save your money for extra games and buy the Leapster all the L-max games work perfectly fine on the regular leapster and the tv functions of the L-max really aren't all that great (it's strength is still as a hand-held system). And it your leapster is the new sleeker model the battery pack in the back takes the l-max charger not the leapster charger.

If you are trying to decide between this and v-smile, get the Leapster the v-smile seems tempting because the games are cheaper, but their software isn't very original, it's educational, but the different titles just seem to repeat -as if they pasted the different characters into the same game senarios. The leapster games are alot richer (for example in the spongebob game when the user has to count coins if they don't have the correct amount they can hit a button to "make change" from a larger coin, v-smile games don't give you that kind of flexibility in the game play) and they feel more like games (the sidescrolling worlds in Numbers on the Loose has zero jumping and rolling and bouncing that is enough like nintendo type games to let them feel they are playing and not just learning) & the tutorials/helps are very good at explaining what the user needs to do to complete the task.

When we first bought our Leapster we took it out of the box carefully and tested it when our child wasn't around so we could take it back if we didn't like it but we were pleasantly pleased & if you are looking for educational gaming that will grow with your kids (or can go with your kids, if you are out and about much) you'll love this too. If you buy this be sure to invest in a charger or simply some rechargeable AA batteries and a quick charger (a cheaper option if you aren't going to use the ac adapter that comes in the charging kit). My only other comment,an probably biggest complaint would be to watch out for the built in software that comes on the new sleeker Leapsters it comes with an advertising commercial to introduce your child to all the wonderful titles available that they may not know about -and it's built in, you can't get rid of it! Very annoying leapster! Very annoying!

The new pink/purple leapster has a nicer design than the old version. I like the new pen holder on the front. The arrow dial on the left side is better than the older (round)version, too. HOWEVER, we are exchanging it for the older version. The reason: THE SCREEN! The new leapster's screen measures only 5.4 cm the old version screen measures 7 cm. Also, the pen on the new leapster is smaller. Customer service said everything on the new design is smaller "to accomodate smaller hands"...that's nice, but it also requires better fine motor skills which smaller hands do not necessarily have. For those of you who purchase this and are considering the recharging kit I was told that this design needs the L-max recharger.

I have two of these, one Leapster and one L-max that I got for my twins for their 4th Birthday a few days ago.

I let them play with their games for the entire day on their birthday, without restriction...all with a plan in mind...

The PROS:

Once the kids found out how much fun the games are and how easy it is to learn while playing, they won't put them down...you may not feel like this is a 'pro' except that now, I make them earn time on the games. They get 10 minutes for putting their toys away; 10 minutes for making their beds; 10 minutes for helping with laundry, etc...up to 1 hour of play a day...I HAVE NEVER HAD SO MUCH HELP AROUND THE HOUSE! As Dr. Phil says, "Find their currancy". Well, I have found it. They are doing what I ask, when I ask...if they don't, time gets taken away. I wish I had thought of this while they were potty training! This is working much better than the 'marbles' for allowance system...they have no concept of money yet. Great toy with lots of variations and levels of play. Good Job LEAPFROG!

THE CONS:

I went through 4 sets of batteries (for the entire day) before I sped out the door for a rechargable battery system. I'm going back again today for another recharging system. I've called Leapfrog and they said that the battery packs, themselves, cost as much as the entire recharging kit, so they do not offer additional battery packs for purchase. You can play with just the AC Adapter that comes with the recharging system, but that has been a pain so far, since one Leapster has a battery pack and the other has to be played off the AC Adapter, and then plugged back in to the recharging unit at night to recharge the L-max. I have forgotten to plug it back in a few times and had problems explaining that Mommy's memory is fading and that they will have to wait to play again until the batteries are recharged.

Overall, I love the product. I haven't had any problems so far, but the units are only a week old. We will have to see. I just love how orderly my house is now that I have found a way to tempt them into picking up their toys. And the tantrums are down as well. If they start screaming over anything, they lose time...my house has NEVER been so quiet since the day they were born! YEE HA!

UPDATE 7/23/2008

Both the leapster and the Lmax are still going strong, however the units are looking very, very worn, scratched and beaten because they are loved. We have an immense library of cartridges...19 at last count....everyone very unique, educational and entertaining. It's been about 2 1/2 to 3 years now and the rechargable battery packs are finally giving out. They just don't hold the charge like they used to. I have also bought the new Didj (see that review) and am never disappointed by Leapfrog.

Honest reviews on LeapFrog Leapster Learning Game System - Pink

I was so disappointed when I go this Leapster home from the store. I bought it for my 5 y.o. after she had played with her cousin's older version. When I got the new one home I was frustrated to see that not only is the screen quite a bit smaller, but there are only two games on the new version! The older one has a chicken matching game and shape game that are not on this new version. The new one only comes with the coloring game and rabbit river game, and one really tacky game icon that advertises all the other games available for the leapster. Luckily, I was still able to buy the older version at the store.

Both of my daughters received Leapsters from Santa last year. My older one wanted a red one and my younger a pink one. The red one was an L-Max and this was the only pink one. I believe they now have a pink L-Max, but in my opinion spending the extra money on the L-Max isn't worth it. The only difference is you can hook it up to the tv, which we've never done because the whole fun of the Leapster for my girls is that they can take it anywhere. I was worried that the L-Max games wouldn't work on the "plain" Leapster, but that is not the case. All of the games are interchangable. However, you can't play a non-L-Max game on the tv, which again, doesn't matter to us anyway.

Also, I wouldn't bother buying the recharging station. We just use rechargable batteries and they work just fine.

Customer Ratings: 5 stars

Although there were no product reviews for this set, after much research on the alternative options available for a kid's starter music set I took a chance and ordered it. We're very pleased with the contents of the "Rhythm Bag"! Nice quality and our 2.5 year olds love the instruments. The maracas are very sturdy, large and make a nice sound (ours are purple although the photo shows them as red, but it doesn't matter to us). I priced it out to buy similar items from Amazon individually in order to make our own set and this was a MUCH cheaper option. The fabric bag is great to keep everything together. All-in-all, it's a great starter set. We added a couple of harmonicas and recorders to the mix for more fun! Don't hesitate to try it for yourself.

The Rocking Rhythm bag is exactly as pictured. What you probably wouldn't know is how WELL everything is packaged. All of the instruments were neatly placed into labeled, individual bags..this was quite impressive. I'm very pleased with the delivery of the items as well as overall product quality. My 3 and 6-year old really enjoy playing with the instruments and are quite intrigued with them. I was skeptical due to the pricing of the set, but I took a chance...I'm very pleased with my purchase and will most likely order more as gifts.

This set is exactly what we've been using in our baby class, and it does the job. The rattles are massive, and the sand blocks shed a little when used, but at the price the selection and quality are very good. The block and mallet, the bells, and the triangle all have a very pleasant sound. The booklet with ideas for musical exercises was a great addition, and the storage bag is useful.

Colors vary despite the photo, the contents can be a mixture of blue, red and/or purple.

Planet Heroes Action Figure Mercury Zip
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

I bought this for my son's birthday, which followed Christmas by a couple of weeks, and this is probably the most fun of the Planet Heroes toys. It's not featured much in the DVDs/movies or on the web site, so that's a small liability, but all in all it's a great toy.

The little cycle that Zip comes with is great and rolls very easily. And Zip attaches very easily to it as well. His other accessories don't do anything but kids can pretent and there's no little "bullets" or "darts" to lose!

The figure is the smallest (as is the planet very cool) so fits easily into the other Planet Heroes toys. If you only buy one action figure (and I don't have them all yet, so can't say for certain) and your kid has no idea of one from the other, then I would suggest buying Zip.

But I'd recommend careful shopping -I bought it from Toys R Us for $8.95.

My kids love the iXL! I love the software for a couple of reasons:

1) I only have to buy the software once and can upload it on both of my kids' iXL's

2) Once uploaded on the iXL the software is always with you...I don't have to worry about lost cartridges!

3) It's educational, has easy to follow instructions although the software is intuitive.

4) It's enjoyable. Even my husband and I pick up the iXLs and play with them from time to time.

Overall a great purchase.

The games and graphics are cute and the sounds and phrases are catchy and she likes them. The games are good teaching tools and she has really enjoyed playing with it.

Good quality. Little one still likes playing with it it holds up and colors don't come off of it good

Honest reviews on Bright Starts Stack and Teethe, Primary, 6-12 Months

Baby loves chewing on the rings, but her favorite thing is to use the post as a hammer. I didn't expect the whole thing to be so lightweight. All the parts are just air-filled plastic. I thought it would be more solid. We got this for her when she was 7 months, and she was able to palm the top of the post and just lift the whole thing in the air with one hand, which means she just dumps all the rings off rather than learning to lift them up one by one. Also, the post doesn't taper at all, so there's not really any challenge in stacking the shapes...they all fit regardless of what order they're stacked. She likes to play with it, so it still gets three stars, but I wish it were more challenging as a puzzle rather than just a holder for a bunch of teething toys.

Also, I noticed other reviews mentioned one ring being a rattle, but none of the rings on our set rattled.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for Bright Starts Stack and Teethe, Primary, 6-12 Months

I have nothing negative to say about this cute, colorful stacker. The rings are each a different shape, and I think that is a real improvement over other ring stackers. The only thing that kept this from getting 5 stars is that only the top shape has a rattle in it. It would be really great if they all rattled, but it's still worth buying.

Makey Makey is a great product and an awesome gift to get your children interested in how an electronic circuit works. My 13 year old son already understood that you have to make a complete circuit, so it was very easy for him to use. You access free games, pianos, etc. online and Makey Makey connects to the computer through USB. I would recommend an extra set of alligator clips and the roll of copper strip that come up when you buy the product or you will be a bit confined. As a Mom, I think it is great! I would definitely recommend it as a gift or part of your home education.

TOMY Pic n' Pop Ball Blaster Baby Toy
Customer Ratings: 4 stars

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This toy does three things really. It clicks annoyingly when pushed or pulled. It picks up balls. It shoots out balls. Our toddler likes the shooting part the best. Pushing it around to hear the clicking doesn't interest him (or us), neither does rolling over the balls to collect them (you have to roll it over the ball just so or the ball scoots away.. usually under some furniture or other hard to reach place). Thus he doesn't really play with this toy on his own. However, if we sit there and load the balls into it for him, he happily launches them back at us for a while. Also, this toy is only about 16 inches tall and our 2 year old has to lean over considerable to push or pull it. It is a bit complicated for beginner walkers, but too short for experienced walkers. Would not recommend.

Thanks for reading, I hope this review was helpful!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Well, I got this for my son, but he's only a few months and won't be using this for a while. My daughters, on the other hand, are in love with this thing and use it daily. Now, I have often had qualms with toys like this (they are noisy and make a mess) and when I took it out of the box my wife made a shrieking noise because she thought it was one of those popping vacuum things that makes endless amounts of grating noise. Instead, this is a fun little ball shooter that serves as a ball picker-upper! It doesn't make a lot of noise (when it shoots the balls it is minimal) and it gets the kids active to chase after the balls because they like getting the shooter to pick them up. This keeps the mess contained (most of the time). So, I'm a fan. I hope the boy likes it when he's old enough to start walking (I'm sure he'll love it) but for now my older kids (who are 3 and 6) find it pretty entertaining!

Best Deals for TOMY Pic n' Pop Ball Blaster Baby Toy

TOMY Pic n' Pop Ball Blaster is a great toy for toddlers and younger children.

It launches balls from the unit and with press of a button ball is brought back in toy, so this is a ball thrower and a magic ball vacuum cleaner in one.

It's specially intended for toddlers, kids who just learn how to walk because it will get your child on the move and it's great that it can be used both indoors and outdoors.

We bought this toy for colleague's son birthday and he was delighted, he hasn't stopped playing for hours with it.

Fully recommended great product for your kid.

Honest reviews on TOMY Pic n' Pop Ball Blaster Baby Toy

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The idea behind this is great but it actually doesn't function very well. The balls don't pick up easily and you have to push too hard for little hands.

Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for TOMY Pic n' Pop Ball Blaster Baby Toy

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program My son is a bit young to play with this toy but it has gotten a workout from our childcare provider's (in-home nanny) daughter who just turned two years old and immediately gravitated toward this toy.

--------------------

USE:

The Pic n' Pop Ball Blaster is a really neat idea. Your child/toddler is supposed to push the little toy around blasting the brightly colored balls out of the front and then run them over to pick them back up and do it all over again. The toy works exactly as intended and described, no complaints there. The annoying bit I mentioned comes in after the child has dispensed the balls. First the toy make a popping or clicking sound when pushed. Second, the balls will inevitably roll under a piece of furniture. Third, my dogs go absolutely crazy for this toy and run after the balls and then away with them. So just understand that you're getting a very parent-involved toy here.

--------------------

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THE TOY:

(+) Seems well built and has withstood some toddler temper tantrums/abuse quite well.

(+) Colorful and really a cool toy/idea

(+) Good price

(+) Will keep your dog(s) entertained or terrified for hours

--------------------

WHAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT THE TOY:

(-) I could do without the constant clicking/popping sound but it doesn't seem to bother the child

(-) Expect to spend a lot of time chasing the balls down and moving furniture to get to them

--------------------

CONCLUSION:

Neat toy that annoys adults, go figure. Still a lot of toys probably do that. Buy it for your kid already, they'll have fun. Recommended!

Overall great product easy to use and my son enjoys it. I would recommend using this as soon as your child is interested.bought it for my daughter when she gets older

I highly recommend this Leap Frog Little Leaps game, Discovering Creative Expression, which features the Disney princesses Ariel and Cinderella. Preschoolers, and even toddlers and kindergarteners, will enjoy the music and learning games. They are presented as colorful, engaging Disney cartoons, and the overall mood is very gentle, cheerful, and pleasant. The different activities use the Toddler Mode of the activity controller, with its joystick directional navigation and buttons to push.

Activity 1 is "A Sea Friend Sing Along" with Ariel. The music is catchy, and kids are encouraged to both sing along and act out the words, mimicking different sea creatures. According to the booklet, this activity introduces music and singing, movement and dance, sea animal names, sequencing, and decision making. And it's fun, to boot!

Activity 2 is "Colorful Crystals," also with Ariel. In round one, the child moves the directional controller up, down, left or right to choose among the different colored clams to find hidden crystals. In round two, the child chooses which color crystals Ariel will use to make a necklace, and pushes the button to "help" string them. This game teaches colors, social behavior, sequencing and decision making.

Activity 3 with Cinderella is "The Mouse Cake." In round one, your little one selects the icing colors for the cake, and sees the color that results when they are mixed. In round two, Cinderella begins to draw a decoration on the cake. Kids can guess what it will be, then push the button to see more. Something is missing from the drawing, and kids are asked to guess that, too. This activity introduces colors, color mixing, social behavior, sequencing and decision making.

Activity 4 is "Dancing to the Music," again featuring Cinderella. Round one has four mice demonstrating dance steps to help Cinderella practice them: a sway, curtsy, twirl, and waltz. Children use the joystick to choose a mouse and dance move, and see videos of children dancing after each one. In Round 2, the child helps Cinderella practice the dance moves, using the directional controller again. This activity is great for getting kids learning and exercising along with their cartoon pals and real kids. The booklet says it teaches music and singing, movement and dance, social behavior, and decision making.

This game was a favorite for our daughter at ages three and four, and she wasn't even that interested in the Disney princesses. I think the catchy songs, the ability to control the action occurring, and the cartoon characters made it appealing to her. If the games are played straight through perhaps the time is shorter than other Little Leaps games, as other commenters said; I never noticed this, but realized it may have been because my daughter kept choosing to replay the activities multiple times, she liked them so much!

Best Deals for Discovering Creative Expressio

We ordered this for my daughter and I was surprised when she played it how short it was. Both the princess have 2 games each, yes there are only 2 princesses in this game. The music for the games was catchy (for the toddler and annoying for the parents) and kept her attention.

I don't know if it's a bug but I wanted to select and repeat an activity so I selected my activity and chose repeat play and it only played the first 1/2 of the activity and I KNOW the activity was longer than that. Minor flaw but it's annoying.

All in all a great attention holding game for your little princess.

Honest reviews on Discovering Creative Expressio

Perfect for the little princess. Teaches patterns, color blending, simple dance moves. Like all discs that work with this system, is a bit slow.

My 3 year old son needs reinforcement with his speech. He attends a daycare learning academy where he takes speech therapy twice a week, but I wanted something extra for him to have at home. He loves this thing because it's fun, educational but not difficult, does not seem like schoolwork, and it's right on his learning level. I had to buy an extra joystick because his friends and cousins think this is more of a video game system than edutainment. They are learning and not knowing it. His speech therapist saw an improvement in phonics and excitement for learning within the first week. This is the greatest toy/gift/tutor that you can get for your kid 3 yrs and up. And, this version comes wih its own storage case, adapter, and you need no extra equipment to hook up. It also comes with an alphabet game that is out of this world.

This is a good buy for the price. It's made for smaller children, just right for my 3 and 5 yr olds. Probably not challenging enough for kids over 7 or 8. This is the second one we've had. The wire broke off on the first (a hand me down) but my 2 yr old was very rough with it.

Honest reviews on VTech V.Smile TV Learning System Plus with Bonus Adaptor

We are a gaming family but it was hard to find things at the preschool level for the kids. I love the vsmile and my 4 year old loves playing the games. This system was a good deal because it came with a controller, a game and the ac adapter (which would normally all be sold separately). Honestly, my daughter hardly ever plays the game that came with it, preferring the games with characters that she recognizes from the television. If you are looking for preschool friendly video games with an educational component, then this is right for you.

Replogle Globes Tallinn Globe, Blue and Gold Metallic Finish, 12-Inch Diameter
Customer Ratings: 5 stars
Buy Now
Buying a product from the internet sight-unseen can be a risk, but this one paid off. This globe is far and away the most beautiful I've ever seen.

The blue metallic finish of the ocean looks like high-end automotive paint, with layers of metallic sparkle and sheen. I think it far nicer than the "jeweled" globes made of semi-precious stones, and with those globes, the outlines of continents and countries are just rough approximations of the appropriate shapes. Here, the land masses are all perfectly accurate, and are finished in a metallic bronze color that complements the ocean very well.

Some caveats:

The writing is black, whether on land or ocean. On the ocean, the black is _very_ difficult to read.

The stand consists of three pieces held together with two screws -the top curved piece in which the globe rests can't be secured to the post tightly enough to prevent it from rotating somewhat.

The color of the metal surround is a different color than that of the stand (the stand is closer to black, the metal surround is a brass color).

Still, five stars for a beautiful globe.

I bought these in a store yesterday. They were inexpensive, but felt light and possibly cheap. I thought they wouldn't be as good as the Fisher Price ones that I was familiar with. However, my 7 mo. old seems to be enjoying them. She dumps them off the ring, bangs them, and puts them in her mouth. I like that they have different textures (to help her differentiate) and that they are light enough for her to easily hold. I wish they were BPA free (I didn't see it on the package), but she doesn't keep them in her mouth to chew on them thankfully.

Customer Ratings: 4 stars

Sea-Monkeys are a great way to introduce children to the joys and responsibilities of pet ownership, and are also tremendous fun for an older age group as well. The care is simple though I do recommend that you be very careful because even though they are not a dog or cat, they are still creatures and deserve care.

Here are a few tips that I thought I would share to help everybody out in taking care of their new pets:

1) Always aerate the water. I highly recommend the Million Bubble Air Pump becuase it works very well, and is far safer and more convenient that the other options. Also, never, ever think that by stirring the water you are aerating it. You ARE NOT and this method has killed some of my older Sea-Monkeys.

2)Do not overfeed, but remember they do need to be fed. Follow the recommened feeding amount and keep a regular feeding schedule.

3)Make sure you read the entire handbook as it includes all the vital information you need to keep a healthy tank of Sea-Monkeys. It also has many useful tips and some interesting facts.

I recommend this specific tank because it well made and includes all of the necessary things to make Sea-Monkey ownership an enjoyable, rewarding and educational experience.

Math & Logic #2 not only teaches your children math, but because the cards have pictures of animals on them, you can teach your child categorizing, sorting, and comparing.

We found the cards to be both colorful and engaging. The pictures keep your child interested and at the same time teach them how to count, addition and subtraction. You won't find other flashcards that are as diverse as these.

The discussions you have with your child while playing with the cards about numbers and animals will further help develop your child's vocabulary and language skills.

They are also the perfect size to take to preschool, trips to daycare, the babysitters and grandma's house.

We received the Teach Your Child to Count to 10 and Teach Your Child to Count to 20 sets (for a blog review). There are a total of 80 animals on these card sets and those really had my toddler excited. This second set has her thinking beyond the 1 to 10, while for a three year old those numbers are a little hard to grasp it really helps her to have a visual (without me scrambling to draw a visual myself). She likes playing with them on her own as well as locating all the animals on the card that shows each group. I highly recommend it, just keep away from small babies that like to chew on things! ;)

Best Deals for Teach Your Child to Count to 20, Math & Logic #2, First Additions

These cards are amazing! When I received these I was very amazed to find that they were filled with so many learning ideas. Not only are these cards set up to help you learn your numbers, but as a parent you also have the opportunity to use them in so many different ways. We used both of these sets with my youngest daughter who is 3.5. We started with the first set and once she started better recognizing the numbers from 1-10, we moved on to try the 11-20 cards as well. She is still struggling with these but she is catching on. What she loves is the fact that the cards themselves are made for kids her age. With vibrant colors and fun animals, she can relate and she enjoys counting the animals that were on each of the cards.

I started being the one who would pick each set of cards within the pack, but I quickly found that she was saying that she wanted to do Math at night like her big sister and that she wanted to be the one to choose what cards we were using as well.

I have seen a marked improvement in both number recognition as well as comprehension through using these cards and I have to say that anyone that is looking for a set of cards that will assist with their own child's math skills, you should look no further than these cards.

ChildUp Learning Cards are a wonderful tool for parents to use with their young children (aged 1-5) to teach them early math skills.

These cards are made for parents and children to use together, creating an interactive learning environment. I found the Parent Cards to be particularly detailed and useful! They provide parents with background information in order for them to understand how their child learns and more. The cards guide the parent through very specific questioning techniques they can use on their children in order to help their learning throughout the use of the Learning Cards Set. They also walk the parents through very specific lessons so that they can be their child's teacher when using the learning cards. The lessons are detailed right down to specific dialogue that can occur in order to really focus the child's learning.

As a former Kindergarten teacher, I highly recommend these learning cards as they help young children develop some key early learning skills such as:

Math and logic skills

Learning and cognitive skills

Listening and memory skills

Attention and concentration skills

Language and social skills

We will definitely be using these cards this summer as I prepare my son to enter Junior Kindergarten! What a fabulous resource for parent and child!

These Early Learning Game Cards are just the thing you need to help your child develop early learning skills. The animals on the cards really caught my 2 year old's attention. Only thing is, my 2 year old wanted to play with the cards more than pay attention to me but after about 2 months, of me and my oldest daughter working with her, she started to actually pick up on counting. I'm going to keep on with baby C and maybe by the time she's 3, she will sit still long enough! Every child is different, when it comes to learning, so I highly suggest giving these cards a shot!
