Lab in a bag blast of color was a good experience for my Grand-daughters ages 5 and 7. We did the many experiments and enjoyed seeing the changes in colors and the growth of little beads. We even made a form of snow! They loved it however an adult does need to be right there with children to do the experiments properly. The directions should be read ahead of time to make the process go faster as they are lengthy. The end result; it was a great memory maker for spending time together. All products are safe for the kids but there are some cautions on pouring some liquids down the drain as they could cause some problems so do read the directions.

I ordered this for my 5 year old daughter who is into making "potions" and we had a great time doing them. Instructions are very good, point by point on how to do perform each experiment and how to get the most out of what the child observes. With a 5 year old, you really have to be there to help but I can also see how this would be great for an older "scientist" too. Great purchase!

I had previously looked into getting a Van De Graaf Generator for a Halloween mad scientist lab scene that I was putting together, but everywhere I looked, the price was just ridiculous. I was toying with the idea of just mocking something up to simulate something like this when I found an electronics magazine that featured instructions on how to build one. The article laid everything out well, but kept reiterating the complexity of the project and the fact that you were playing with a potentially lethal power generator if you made a critical mistake. Not being that confident in my ability and not wanting to fry myself, I was getting ready to go back to my initial idea of faking it when I chanced upon this listing on Amazon. The price listed seemed too good to be true, as the cost to build one was going to cost just the same or perhaps even more. I assumed that it was going to be cheaply made or some miniature version of what I was expecting, but when it arrived I was gleefully surprised to find out that my low expectations weren't needed.

It did a magnificent job that Halloween and we have pulled it out from time to time to play with and use it to explain the effect to my teenage nephew, which sparked (pardon the expression) his interest in science and electronics.

This is a sturdy machine that makes big static electricity and impressive demos and displays. However, I am disappointed with a few things, especially so given the significant price. The manual included is sketchy, sloppy, incomplete, and blows an opportunity to round out the package with experiments and user tips. Nor did I find anything in the package that informs me as to where to get replacement parts, which will be an issue one of these days. The last issue: the unit supposedly includes an internal light bulb for drying out the insides when high humidity interferes with operation. However I have no idea if it's actually working when I hit the switch and the manual does not explain whether I should see some light somewhere, or how to check. I will have to take it apart to see what's up. Would be nice to know. All this says that the company is selling a product that mostly works but does not care much about some important details of helping the user get the best experience.

The first level is designed to find one detail in the story they read. In level two they are looking for two details that are NOT in the story. The third level they are looking for four correct details in the story, and this level made her think. She would find the answer with three of the four answers and choose that one. She really enjoyed using the secret decoder to see if her answer were correct. We even involved my three-year-old by letting her see if her sister's answers were correct. The answers are A, B, C, and D so I was able to work with her on visually finding the correct letter.

If you're like me, ordering slides for a Microbiology class and you have no idea what you want/need go ahead and spend the extra two dollars needed to buy these slides. Initially I ordered the blank slides (no frosted edges) because my professor didn't specify a type and I like saving money (even $2). Without the frost I could not easily mark my slides, which is especially annoying if you're doing a million slides that all seem to look the same and/or involve oil/stains making my permanent marker/wax pencil labels ineffective. Even if you don't need to label the slide, the frosted edges help you know which side faces up.

So, I finally broke down and ordered a second set of slides (this set) and I am so glad I got classy and ordered these ones. The frost is especially nice, better than the slides everyone bought from the school bookstore and some others from Amazon. When I use a regular pencil to label these slides most of my stains don't even temporarily cover the label I've written. To be more specific when doing a gram stain with stain actively soaking the slide, the stain moves around my handwritten label on the frost allowing me to always see the label.

Bottomlime: not all people need frosted edges but I'd recommend you err on the side of caution (especially if you're taking microbiology).

Just to get this clear. THESE ARE NOT THE FROSTED TIPS SLIDES. The box of regular and frosted tips look nearly identical except for the code number. This slide box has the code of M3504-P The frosted ones have M3504-1F. Packaging came in a box with no bubble wrap or anything. After all it is a fragile item shouldn't they put some packaging material? But lucky I did not have any broken slides. I did how ever on another brand of microscope slides which only used a bubble wrap envelope. But everything seem to be good quality for the price you pay.

I ordered these as a surprise at the culmination of a homeschool geology group for 7-10 year olds. The idea of cracking open rocks, especially after we had investigated how geodes are formed, was very exciting to the kids, and I am happy to say that no one was disappointed! We broke the first one open inside a sock as recommended very dusty, and the geode broke into multiple pieces rarher than two neat halves. However, the appearance of crystals inside the pieces was quite a thrill to everyone, and then the kids all began guessing what the inside of their own rocks might look like. Using a chisel and a hammer to break them open gave a much more predictable result two or three sizable pieces with very lovely crystals and the classic geode pocket. The kids still speak fondly of geology. :)

I was a little worried to get these because one of the reviews said that most of the geodes were duds. Every one of my geodes had crystals in them. My 10 year old niece loved it. She was very excited after breaking the first one because the crystals were purple! Some seemed harder to crack than others especially the purple one, it had a hard outer shell. I would definitely buy this kit again.

I take my six-year-old daughter to a natural history Museum where she is fascinated by the geology displays. We have a lot of fun identifying the various crystals and admiring items for sale in the gift shop ( shockingly overpriced). The last time we were there I purchased some "break your own geodes" figuring she would have fun discovering the crystals inside at home. The ones we bought from the museum were relatively small and not very impressive so I went online and googled the product and found them for sale on Amazon. Trusting this website I had no problem buying the larger geodes and they came within 48 hours. They were measurably better than the ones we got from the museum and my daughter had a lot of fun opening each one.

As a word of advice.... If you have a wet saw ( used for cutting tiles) you can slice these geodes in half exactly like you would buy at the store. You get a professional finish and you can even spray them with a little protective coating to keep them shiny. If you're searching for this item you will not be disappointed by this seller or their products. Their shipping is extremely quick and the products are top notch. Have fun!

I only gave this 3 stars do to the fact that most of the geodes were only the size of a golf ball. there were only 3 that were over 2inch in diameter. but they had good crystal clusters in 3 different colors, (white, clear and purple) my daughter loved them and enjoyed cracking them open to find out what was inside, word of advice, unless you want lots of little pieces, you need to score the out side enough to get them to break in half. I used a dremel tool to cut grooves in them so they wouldnt shatter after we did a few that tuned to gravel. not to mention they are a bit high on price shop around a little to find better deals.

As a homeschooling mom, I ordered this prism for a science unit on light later this year. However, it was a huge hit in my house from the moment I opened it! Both kids had a blast making rainbows and seeing the optical illusions from this. I only subtracted a point from durability because it is glass after all, but it is extremely heavy duty.

It came very well wrapped in bubble wrap, and was shipped extremely quickly. Despite the warnings about chips, I haven't noticed any. The company also sent me a catalog chock full of stuff I never knew I could buy ;) The product descriptions often had me in stitches.

Prisms are amazing in that they educate us on the physics of light behavior as they relate to various mediums. My son is 4, and he is enjoying the brilliant light behavior as he looks through this prism. Later, we will shine a makeshift light box through the prism and cast the refracted light upon paper in a dark room.

Remind your child that this prism is glass, and it must be handled with care. I recommend making a point to the child that it is best not to run around with it on concrete. Keep it safe above a soft surface in case it falls.

I am very happy with the product. It is hefty and heavy duty. Definitely not cheap.

I bought this for my 11 year-old grandson's birthday. I Was tired of buying toys that lasted or were interesting for only hours. My grandson's are fascinated with all things WWII right now and this boy, in particular, likes to know how things work. His prism came with a small chip but no scratches. The chip actually makes it seem more authentic and he is excited to think it just might have been in a real army tank 65 years ago! It is a lot of fun to play with but remember, it is glass and it would break if it was dropped. Very heavy, very cool, no batteries to replace. It was delivered quickly and was well packaged. Not exactly a toy but lots of fun.

This is a large and solid piece of glass and does a beautiful job splitting the light. Mine was however nowhere as perfect as mentioned in other review. Light scratches and a big chip. Good for using it to split the light, not good for a showpiece/decoration however.

1) it is sturdy and 100% wood

2) beautiful minimalist design

3) it is small enough to fit on a typical train table without overwhelming the space (much smaller than the Thomas roundhouses for example)

Negatives:

1) it is so small that only Plan City engines will fit inside and allow the doors to be closed. Even the smallest Thomas engines will not quite fit

2) the track grooves are very shallow and don't hold the trains well

3) the included piece of track that attaches in front of the roundhouse to channel trains to each berth is much larger than the picture and does not attach snugly against the building

Overall a nice, high quality toy, but just a bit too small for most purposes

I bought this roundhouse for my grandson's Plan City train layout. It holds 3 engines and has 2 doors that swing either way. My grandson is only 2 1/2 years old and I think it may be better suited to an older child. It is very well made. It is also pretty big so it takes up a lot of space on a typical train table and connecting it to the layout requires a switch track section.

I was quite pleased with this microscope. It did not appear to be a refurbished, pre-owned, damaged or otherwise flawed unit. It came properly packaged and shipped in a timely fashion. There was a minor issue with the list of parts which said both a red and green filter was included in the shipment, but only the green was present. I wrote to Am Scope and they initially replied claiming boldly that the red filter was NOT in the list of parts. I replied letting them know that this was not a big problem for me (only an inexpensive red source filter), but noted that this could be an issue they may want to review by checking the list of items in the owner's manual package being currently shipped with these scopes. I was simply trying to offer what I thought was valuable customer feedback. They replied, saying they would send the red filter. I hope they understood the intent. Anyway, as for the scope, I am more than pleased with the dark field and the aperture source performance. The dark filed is not always needed, but when you just need to see a high contrast outline of structures, it proves invaluable in my mind. It is quick and easy to install either source option. The LED is likely to outlive the Halogen and provides a perfectly bright and color balanced illumination. I may temper this when I start taking digital images with my camera, but I like the LED. The intensity is adjustable via rheostat and rarely ever needs to be up on full brightness. The source aperture will likely meet most of one's needs, but I suppose this depends on subjects for which the scope is used. I don't really use color filters, but there may be a need in the future, I suppose. I most appreciate the quick change 10x wide angle and standard 20x oculars (with binocular). I not real keen on using both at the same time (20x one eye and 10x for the other), but this is an option. I soon will likely get an adaptor to use my digital camera ($90 a bit pricy for an adaptor IMHO), but the CCD camera attachments are reasonably priced as well. The location of the stage adjustment is convenient and easy to use without looking. And the rear tilting objectives are a real plus. I was sold on these, but not till I tried them. I'm not a big fan of the 100x objective with the messy oil, but this option is there if you need that extra 2 fold magnification. I don't think you can ask more of an optical scope, especially for the price. …though the pricy phase contrast option would be a sweet addition.

This is a great Microscope! My 10 year old daughter has been set on becoming a Paleontologist since she was around 6, so for her birthday this year we decided to get her a Microscope. My friend who is a gemologist suggested that we get a binocular microscope. I started doing some research and decided that I also wanted a camera port so we could easily photograph what we were seeing. Some more research into halogen vs LED, quickly pointed out the superiority of LED for longevity of bulbs and since they are much cooler they avoid overheating delicate specimens. I then learned about Darkfield... Just do an internet search for images using "Microsocope and Darkfield" and you will see why I decided this was a "must have" feature (we use darkfield as the default mode for just about everything we view) I also wanted a microscope powerful enough to see really interesting things (so minimum 1000x). I then started searching and quickly narrowed it down to this microscope, and we have been super happy with it. I separately purchased an AmScope 3.0 MP camera AmScope 3.0 MP USB2.0 Microscope Digital Camera + Software 3.0 MP, Compatible with Windows XP/Vista/7/8 and Mac OS 10.6 & Up, figuring I could upgrade the camera later if necessary. We are really happy with the camera, and for us 3 MP is more than enough It works perfectly with this microscope. We hook up a laptop and are able to see on the computer what the person looking through the binocular lenses is seeing so no one is bored. The ToupViewX software that comes with the camera is amazing as well, It has all kinds of features to let you filter the image, lay down rulers, zoom, etc. It is for both Windows and Mac, although the Windows version is much superior the Mac version appears to be a port and not all features are yet there. My nephew is a biology student at U of Md and when he came to visit he was very excited to use this microscope and commented that this microscope was better than what they use. He showed us how to get the most out of the microscope, including how to use the oil when zooming in with the most powerful lenses. Considering all you get, the price is great! It arrived right on schedule, well packaged and in good condition. I also ordered various prepackaged slides with interesting things to look at so we could get started right away. My daughter is really happy with it, and loves showing it to friends. The only two improvements I think I could make to this Microscope: 1. It would be nice to have a light above the specimen as well which could be used when looking at thick objects that aren't transparent this is not standard on most microscopes, and we just keep a separate lamp nearby to shine on those objects. and 2. It would be nice to be able to separately adjust the focus for the camera so it would exactly match the focus of the eye pieces this is, perhaps, more a limitation of the separate camera than the microscope, and perhaps there is a focus attachment available I don't know about.

Cheap Scientific Explorer Backyard Explorer Kit Science Kit

The big draws for this kit were the worm motel, sundial and microscope. Turns out, if you look carefully at what is actually included in the box, you are only provided the instructions and some very minor equipment to make the worm motel and sundial. Everything else has to be provided by you. I felt sick when I realized this after my nephew opened this as his birthday present and there was hardly anything in the huge box.

The microscope was included, but wasn't as I expected. If you look carefully at the picture on the box, you will see that the microscope is actually more like a magnifying glass. Not only was this a disappointment, it was also very fragile. It comes in two parts which are not connected in any way. The first time my nephew used it, the top piece fell off and broke when it hit the floor. I wouldn't say it was sturdy enough for any child to keep it in good working order for long.

Save your money and buy the items you are interested in separately as this kit was not what it advertises.
