I ordered these as a surprise at the culmination of a homeschool geology group for 7-10 year olds. The idea of cracking open rocks, especially after we had investigated how geodes are formed, was very exciting to the kids, and I am happy to say that no one was disappointed! We broke the first one open inside a sock as recommended very dusty, and the geode broke into multiple pieces rarher than two neat halves. However, the appearance of crystals inside the pieces was quite a thrill to everyone, and then the kids all began guessing what the inside of their own rocks might look like. Using a chisel and a hammer to break them open gave a much more predictable result two or three sizable pieces with very lovely crystals and the classic geode pocket. The kids still speak fondly of geology. :)

I was a little worried to get these because one of the reviews said that most of the geodes were duds. Every one of my geodes had crystals in them. My 10 year old niece loved it. She was very excited after breaking the first one because the crystals were purple! Some seemed harder to crack than others especially the purple one, it had a hard outer shell. I would definitely buy this kit again.

I take my six-year-old daughter to a natural history Museum where she is fascinated by the geology displays. We have a lot of fun identifying the various crystals and admiring items for sale in the gift shop ( shockingly overpriced). The last time we were there I purchased some "break your own geodes" figuring she would have fun discovering the crystals inside at home. The ones we bought from the museum were relatively small and not very impressive so I went online and googled the product and found them for sale on Amazon. Trusting this website I had no problem buying the larger geodes and they came within 48 hours. They were measurably better than the ones we got from the museum and my daughter had a lot of fun opening each one.

As a word of advice.... If you have a wet saw ( used for cutting tiles) you can slice these geodes in half exactly like you would buy at the store. You get a professional finish and you can even spray them with a little protective coating to keep them shiny. I only gave this 3 stars do to the fact that most of the geodes were only the size of a golf ball. there were only 3 that were over 2inch in diameter. but they had good crystal clusters in 3 different colors, (white, clear and purple) my daughter loved them and enjoyed cracking them open to find out what was inside, word of advice, unless you want lots of little pieces, you need to score the out side enough to get them to break in half. I used a dremel tool to cut grooves in them so they wouldnt shatter after we did a few that tuned to gravel. not to mention they are a bit high on price shop around a little to find better deals.

The products arrived in great shape and my five year old has a blast breaking them open...as does my wife I think. The geodes are a great size and my daughter is truly fascinated each tie she opens one. Remember to purchase safety goggles.
