I got this for our grandaughter because she was struggling in some classes and I thought that the electronic "toy" format might help her study a little more. It is too soon to tell if it has helped her grades, but I have no doubt that it can and will, if she uses it even half as much as she uses her Nintendo! We loaded batteries and gave it a test run before we gave it to her and I didn't want to put it away. The questions were fun and challenging (it's been a looong time since grade school years for both of us!), and it was very easy to lose track of time playing. I've looked at a LOT of similar educational systems, but most of them were either too advanced or too "babyish" for the granddaughter in 2nd grade. Until I found this LeapFrog, I was sure that the kids in second through 6th grade were just "lost children" in the realm of educational games. The cartridges that came with the unit were 4th-6th grade (and her older sister could play with it, too!), but I felt they were easy enough to not be frustrating for a smart 2nd grader, but still something she could use in later grades and not be bored. Now that some time has passed, I need to find out just how much she is using it (or if N-DS games won). Unfortunately, sometimes there's just no way to get a child to use the educational tools (even the games) when they have free access to stuff that is more "fun" to do and requires no thought. *sigh* Still, I would definitely recommend this LeapFrog system to anyone who has a motivated child. It IS fun, challenging, and flexible enough to grow with the child's educational level for more than one or two years.

Bought this for my wife and four kids we are homeschoolers. The microscope seems robust enough; was surprised it weighs only a pound. But there is an apparent short in the battery compartment because the light will not turn off (have to remove one battery). In fact, the battery compartment immediately appeared quite cheap. It is advertised as a $300 microscope but it clearly is not. Because I bought it for about $50, I'm still happy with the purchase and I think I'll be able to fix the short. The light is nice and bright and the unit works for our intentions.

For a child's first microscope this is a pretty good choice. It is light weight but it also seems pretty sturdy. It doesn't do much at 20x but it does show bugs and rocks. I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my son. At eight, he thinks it's great. For me, it's so so, as I was expecting more detail.

It's super simple to use. I like items that have a paragraph on how to put things together. It's very easily put together so much so my son can do it with no problem. It takes a bit more skill (which he will gain in time) to focus it. It focused only by moving the top apparatus up and down by the knobs on the side. Pretty easy.

One does have to center the subject, but it has a guide in the form of a "light". Without the light turned on, it creates a reflect light in the form of three small dots on the sample so one can center the sample or the slide precisely where the subject can be seem. It has clips to hold the sample. The light, I feel, must be turned on to get the best optics.

It comes with a dust cover.

It is fun to use with my son and it does create quality time together.

I'd say that this is good for...maybe two years before graduating to a more powerful microscope.

fell for the if it was actually originally in the hundreds of dollars and dropped to the sale price, it must be at least acceptable for my 3 year old. That was where I went wrong first, I had to clean every piece because there was some kind of oil(?)grease(?)substance all over everything. Then the makeup on the microscope should have had them reduce the price even more due to its poor quality. Then, I realized that there were no slides or anything that we could look at. I usually try something for at least a week before I make decisions but with this microscope, I knew within minutes that it was not for my son at any age. We ended up going to Walmart and purchasing a microscope kit that was at a comparable price and had all the sample slides necessary for my son to find playing with it fun.

As both a middle and high school science teacher, I found this Weather Forecasting VideoLab very appropriate for all 7 through 12 grade levels. The student and teacher instructions are clearly written. The video is closely aligned with the labs. Both pre and post tests make accountability easy. Lab stations are easy to set up and follow and each lab station includes answer sheets which helps with keeping sudents on task.

This product aligns nicely with National Science Standards and would stand alone for your Earth Science weather unit. It's definitely a fun "hands on" means to understanding basic topics in meteorology.

As our 15 months old has taken a keen interest to my laptop, we felt this would b nice alternative. Turns out, not really, they know the difference. Still, this is a fun toy for the little ones.

Essentially this unit makes an assortment of music, sounds and interacts with keyboard input. Two volume levels are present and we find the lower setting to be perfect as it can get a bit loud on the higher setting. There are plenty of voices, sounds, and music to keep things from getting too repetitive. There is also a little mouse that-well-is shaped like a mouse, that can be moved up ,down, left ,and right with a corresponding voice stating the movement. The mouse is attached to the unit and cannot be removed so nothing can be lost or swallowed.

Durability is very good on this item with no small items that can break off or removed for consumption or chocking ( This is of primary concern for us as it should be for all).

One thing to watch out for and as another reviewer stated, is my boy closes the lid on his fingers or hand. Now for some reason after he closes the lid he places all of his 8 month old might into ensuring it is closed. So I would not walk away and leave him long with it alone as who knows how much pressure it takes for him to feel it. So far he has not injured himself and he has not cried or made any other type of commotion -yet. Just something to watch out for. I am sure if it really hurt he would stop but I am a paranoid father.

EDIT: Well, my boy finally did push too hard and hurt himself with his finger inside the lid. No damage to either finger or toy but something to look out for.

Now my boy does tend to get bored easily and this item is no different. In fact now when I open the screen and play with it with him, he just casually reaches over and closes the screen-often. I think my wife taught him that so that I would do the same with my own laptop.

The toy itself is great and though no where near the sophistication of the real thing it certainly did not cost as much or as dangerous either (he pulled the L key off my laptop keyboard).

Battery life so far is very good with the unit being used everyday for 3 weeks and no sign of weakness. This is a relief as some toys eat through batteries very quickly and things get costly over time as the good batteries are not exactly cheap. We tend to go through 10-15 batteries a week in his other items such as rockers, toys, etc..

Oh, how I envy him and his simple laptop; no investments, no news, no work emails, no etc.... just lights, music, and sound.

Our boy really does enjoy the time with this toy and though he seems now to be more fascinated with closing the lid than anything else there are times he enjoys just slamming his fist at the keyboard and looking up at the screen. Now THAT he did get from daddy! ;)

I work from home on a laptop often, and my 6 month old loves to play w/my laptop so I thought this would be a perfect toy for her.

She does love it, and bangs on the "keyboard" just as she bangs on mine the lights and sounds are great love that it has an OFF button so many toys don't!

However, she also loves to bite on anything she can get her hands on including this toy laptop. While trying to use her left hand to pull the cover down into her mouth, the right hand was caught and pinched between the lid and the keyboard. The plastic is shaped in a way which hurts even when I closed the toy on my own thumb to test it.

I recommend parents do not let their child play with this toy unless you can literally sit there and stare at them the entire time. VTech would be wise to put some sort of safety on the lid of this toy.

We bought this for our son when he was 6 months old because he is always wanting to play with our computer. All the other toy laptops I've seen are for older babies/toddlers so we got this one. He is having a lot of fun with it and it's a great toy. He really likes pressing the buttons and hearing the songs, and opening and closing it. There are three modes, and right now he likes the music best. There are two volume levels which is nice. It's very durable. The only issue I have is that he keeps closing the laptop on his fingers. It doesnt really hurt him, but does pinch his fingers a bit. He's learning now to get his fingers out of the way! I think he'll like this toy for a long time.

My son (like most kids) is totally fascinated by adult laptops I got this with the hope that he might leave mine alone, but he isn't easily fooled. However, he has spent time being absorbed with this toy. He likes pushing all those buttons, and the movable mouse is nice too. It has 3 modes the one that plays the music jingles seems to be his favorite. Personally, I don't think it has much learning utility. There are better educational toys out there. But hey, when a kid needs a laptop, he needs a laptop.

One more thing at the time of writing this, the price on Amazon is 39.99, which seems rather steep to me, considering I just bought this for 9.99 at Toys R US. So it might be worth your while to do some comparison shopping before you spring for it at this price.

My son got this as a gift at around 4 months old. After hours of screaming while we were out of town meeting family for dinner, he instantly stopped when this got turned on, and proceeded to stare at it for the next hour of dinner and start of the drive home until he fell asleep (of course at that point I had to keep turning the music back on, but hey, can't argue with quiet!). He went through a phase where he just kept shutting the lid, which seemed to be great fun for him (although it was several months until he could also OPEN the lid too). He also went through a phase of trying his best to bend the lid all the way backwards, which I think is what finally did it in. Now that he's a year, it still works great MOST of the time. Once in a while it starts sounding like a broken record, it just gets stuck in a loop. My guess is that in the bending it backwards process, he loosened a wire or something. Like I said, most of the time it still works great, it still holds his attention. You've got to figure no matter how durable something is, after 8 months of banging, drooling in, chewing on, and bending backwards, just about anything's going to have problems! Also, battery life it pretty good. Haven't had to change them yet.

as much as I love the idea of this game, I got it right as my daughter started to show left handedness. This makes it really hard to have the keyboard on one side then lean across your whole body to write. You would think in 2009/10 handedness would be less of an issue but you cannot change sides on the writing area. This bothers me but overall the toy is very good for toddlers (I purchased for a 2 year old) on up, you don't NEED to buy the extra games, there is quite a bit that comes with it.

Very pleased with this toy. Allows my daughter to be independent with the computer. Easy single push button access to applications. Easy to manipulate between activities. Makes her feel as if she can really "do it herself". Loves the pink keyboard. Easy to install and competitively priced through Amazon. May be worth noting that the Computer Cool School requires a computer and monitor. Also good to know that the letter and number cards for the writing application come with the keyboard and do not have to be purchased separately. Great item.

I purchased this for one my students who has a problem learning his alphabet (spanish student 2nd grade). Just like any other flash cards of the alphabets where they show the upper and lower case letters along with pictures each letter it starts with BUT, it also tests him: which lower case matches with the upper case and which letter comes next. I do recommend this over regular flash cards. Now the Talking Pen is not included. I purchased the regular yellow Talking Pen instead of the dog one because it seemed less bulky. I also wrote a review and the Talking Pen( 3 stars) so, check it out.

bought it for my 4yr old's birthday and she loves it. she's been in a private 3K program this past year and has already been introduced to phonics, also has a subscription to abcmouse.com so she quickly caught on to the cards. it was still a good review for her but one month aftter getting them i already feel like i should buy a more advanced set because of her early exposure. it's a great starting point for her though because she needs to master the entire set of 30 cards and it's boosted her confidence as she gets the 95% of them right.

I ordered a lot more sets. They work well for both of my kids, ages 4 and 5. I had especially wanted this since my son (age 5) hates all things reading and does much better with electronics. He did this by himself and really enjoyed it. It's helped out a lot. I wish the pens said more and explained why their answer is wrong or right, but maybe they'll change some things in the future.

Also, on some of the cards they have to hit the dots in certain areas for it to tell them it is right, even if it is the correct answer.

You'll need to make sure you purchase the Hot Dots "pen," in regular style, doggy or kitty animal characters available, too. I am a big fan of Pockets of Learning, and thought this was a nice addition to our collection. My only complaint is the book does not seem as sturdy as other Pockets of Learning cloth books, also the pages are not the full length of the book as the picture shows, they are smaller, and the zipper tends to get stuck Overall, it's still a wonderful book and very well thought out.

Best megcos Magnetic Capital Letters in a Jar, 100-Piece Deals

This set of magnetic letters is colorful and comes in a nice container with a handle that can easily be carried around by a toddler. All the letters stay in place on the refrigerator door, except for letter "M," that continuously slides down because of the positioning of the magnet. Interestingly enough, there is no problem with "W," it's inverse. The problem occurs with all the "M's" in the set. Aside from this, it's a nice set and a good value.

The day I bought these magnets, I immediately had my daughter help me put them on the fridge. She can't spell yet, but she understands that they're letters and she has a blast with these. There are plenty of letters, so it's easy to spell lots of different words. I only have a few complaints:

As other reviewers have stated, the magnets are a little weak. The M's in particular don't always stay well--we have to get them at the perfect angle so they won't slide down.

Even with multiples of many common letters, those multiples are only of one or two colors. It'd be nice, for instance, if all the E's weren't green and red, but rather one of each color since there are 5 of them. Not a big deal, but it would still be nice.

I bought these magnetic letters for my granddaughter who is two. Her parents were not happy with them. They were small enough that they thought she might put one in her mouth and choke on it. The magnets were so small that the letters fell off the refrigerator too easily. They were not successful for a two year old. But we have them put aside. Maybe when she is older we can use them on a cooky sheet.

These are great little letters! They are very bright and they stick to the fridge very well! I would recommend sticking to the age requirements on the packaging though. My son was a little too young when we purchased them and we have spent a lot of time tell him to take them out of his mouth. I would recommend them for a older child that is past the "everything in the mouth" phase.

I like these because the pictures are big and colorful to grab a young toddler's or preschooler's attention! I practice my own version (much cheaper and easier) of" my baby can read" program. It's a basic concept. You show them the cards (try only 4 at a time for younger kids) and mention the name then repeat over and over again while they play on and off a little every couple of hours. Then after a few times say "where is the ____?" and see if they point to it. If they don't help them point to it and say the word. Within a few days they will learn those words. At first yes its memorization like with everything else they learn. Then if you bring those words into context like pointing and saying the word of it in books, the kitchen, store ect. Its learning and fun.
