My girls wanted a place to keep their "secrets". Though the can't really write yet they loved the clasp and neat stuff inside. Warning, there is glue and little beads so if you don't want a small to larger mess this isn't for you. Great idea for those class birthday parties when you really don't know the child.

My grandchildren (3-8) love this set which they combine with other city block sets. The buildings are a bit off from actual buildings . E.g. The Empire State Building replica top is very small but no matter they love recognizing the landmarks.

V Tech V.Smile Smartridge: Shrek 2

I bought this game for my son who just turned five because I thought it may be challenging for him. He loves the SpongeBob game which is also age 6 to 8 and it has lasted him a very long time and provided lots of entertainment. So I thought I should go for the 6 to 8 range again but this is a little different from SpongeBob. This is like a role-playing game and Shrek can be difficult to maneuver sometimes, especially for a child.... it's tough for me sometimes and I'm an adult! Shrek doesn't seem to be where it looks like he is in the game. For instance there is a game with a dragon that breathes fire balls and you have to shoot at the correct fireball but you can't touch the fireball or else you get hurt. It was almost impossible for me to get the correct angle in order to shoot these fireballs without touching them and it was more frustrating than anything. It always "looked" like Shrek was in the right place, but then you shoot and it's going nowhere near the target.

When first playing the game I thought it may be too difficult for him and was a little worried but after playing for one day, he beat almost every game on there and on the 2nd day he beat all of them.

Another thing that was kind of disappointing was that most of the games just repeat everything over again in the exact same order every time... So if he doesn't actually learn the things it's asking you to do, it doesn't matter because he just memorizes the answers and wins that way.

Some games are so short that you only had to play it once to memorize all the answers which seems kind of ridiculous.

I also thought the graphics would be much better.

So this was a fun game but only the first time.

My son loved playing with his V Tech, even after we got his Wii. I liked the fact that V Tech made learning fun. My son loved doing the math cartridges the most, but enjoyed playing all the games. It's really hard to get children to enjoy learning, but who doesn't love Shrek, Batman, and Thomas!

The blocks are definitely unique and not the same old boring alphabet blocks. However, I was really disappointed that there are not 26 blocks! There are only 16. Had I known this, I probably would have just purchased traditional blocks. Also, not the packaging, in contradiction to the item description, says ages 3 and up, although frankly, I don't see why a 6 month old can't play with them. I got them for my one year old daughter.

These are fantastic and a very good idea. Sturdy wooden blocks with cool retro art on each side of each square.

You will like it if you like things like that.

These blocks are a fresh spin on the alphabet blocks many of us grew up with. They serve the same purpose--teaching children their letters--but like many things made for children these days (ala Pixar) Mom and Dad get a bang out of it, too.

Honest reviews on XYZ Alphabet Blocks

Exactly what we expected; fun with a bit of old-timey-ness. Definitely glad we got them. You should definitely get them!

Great for parents with a sense of humor!

Excellant twist on traditional blocks. Love! Our friends get such a kick out of these.

Well made, and fun. Especially love that they are wood, and even have their own traythis helps keep them contained & easier to notice if any may be missing (Not much worse than your foot finding a rogue block in the middle of the night. Other than a Lego)

But, Parents of Sensitive Nuggets Beware: My two year old, who is now developing an apprehension to all things "scawy" really dislikes a few of the pictures ( zombie, extraterrestrial, etc). And since each block has more than one letter, we can't just hide that one/sub it out.

So these are perfect for parents of oblivious babies that want to have kids toys they can enjoy, too. But once/if your kids get older & hit that sensitive stage, you may want to put them away for awhile. If your kids aren't bothered, kudos! Mine just currently has a distaste for the jeepers-creepers. Bummer!

Disclosure: We received a review copy of this item, but all opinions are my own! We don't let our kids spend a lot of time playing video games/watching television, but our 8 year old son LOVES doing those activities. We are using the Awesome Cards as a reward system. He has the opportunity to earn a card each day by doing a special task/chore or sometimes just by having a good attitude about doing a family activity. Each card can be redeemed for 10 minutes of "technology time" and it's really helping him do more around the house without me nagging AND he's whining less about when he can play video games. It's a WIN-WIN!

Bought a pack of the boys/girls cards for my son (3) and daughter (6) and I am amazed at how well this simple idea works. I find that my kids are looking for opportunities to earn the cards even though we have not developed any sort of currency for the cards yet (i.e. one card allows to kid to do/get X). They enjoy earning the cards simply for the sake of collecting them.

What I found really interesting with this product was how my kids are searching for new awesome things to do now to earn a card. For instance, over the course of last year, one of my daughters big fears was jumping into a pool. Over our family holiday this summer, my daughter suddenly blurted out "dad, would I get an awesome card if I jumped off the dock into the water?" When the reply was "of course" off she went. Now, I made the mistake of leaving the actual cards at home on our trip, but this did not stop her from coming up with 6 more ways to earn throughout the rest of our holiday.

Any 'toy' that can help push my kids forward to accomplish more awesomeness in their life certainly deserves 5 stars.

Best Deals for Awesome Deck of Awesome for Boys and Girls, Series I

I was one of the beta testers for this product, but other than that I have no connection with Dr Awesome, who created it (and yes of course that's his real name! It must be, right?). I thought I'd best be upfront about that, but I have not been paid for a review, and the following are my honest opinions. I cannot be bought!

My daughter is three, and shall we say challenging? I practice gentle parenting and do not agree with time-outs or other punitive punishments. I also do not like reward charts (have a read of Alfie Kohn to find out why). So finding a way to discipline my child can be hard.

I tried out the Awesome Deck of Awesome and fully did not expect it to be much good for us. I didn't expect my little girl to be interested in the cards or earning them, but I was wrong!

First, I let her look at them but made it clear they were mine. She spent happy time sorting them out into piles of girls' and boys' ones (my beta deck was a neutral deck with cards for both sexes) and decided on her favourites.

She was then very keen to earn them by being awesome! I allowed her to keep them and gave her a purse to put them in. I now need a new deck because she has nearly all of them and refuses to give them back! I guess I should have made it clear to her that they were currency so I didn't run out, but she is too young to want to use them to buy treats for her, they ARE the treat. But that is great, because that is why and how they work.

With older children it would definitely work to get them to spend cards to buy treats.

I think the deck is great awesome in fact!

It focuses attention on the positive behaviour rather than the negative and offers opportunities for "bad" behaviour to be turned around and made awesome to earn a card. My daughter has grasped the concept of "being awesome" and even issues me with cards if she feels I have been awesome enough, which is super-cute and also makes it much more holistic. We are each of us both the teacher and the student.

The cards are fun, and although it might feel sexist to have girls' decks and boys' decks, we beta testers did ensure that designs were not focused on prettiness or being "feminine" so they are really just more focused designs than pigeonholing genders. I was pretty vocal about that in the beta testing!

It's surprising how many ways you can use the cards and how versatile they are all ages the Awesome Deck of Awesome blog has more ideas for how to use them.

In all, a great gentle parenting resource that you can use in loads of fun ways.

Okay feel free to laugh. I bought one of these initially from a local store, brought it home, and set the sack in the floor while I unpack other items. My little Yorkie/Shih Tzu mix is EXTREMELY nosey and has to inspect all sacks when they enter our home. (She strongly suspects they all contain something for her.) She bumped this toy and "set it off" singing and talking. Once she overcame her fear and suspicions, she fell in LOVE with this toy. After all, it is incredibly cute, and it is interactive regardless if you are a human or a dog as long as the buttons are punched, it merrily sings and talks. It is also extremely durable. Normally she "guts" stuffed toys in about five minutes flat, but this little guy has stood up to some serious chewing, shaking, dragging across the floors (it is almost bigger than she is) and romping. However, my intent was to give this toy to my nephew (who is due at the end of September). Seeing how much she enjoyed the toy, I just went ahead and bought another one (with the CD this time) for him. It is the same toy, just a bonus CD. So, as unorthodox as it is, I can attest to some pretty tough durability after the tests my pup has put the toy through and her teeth are sharp and she can shake pretty hard, so I'm going to say everything will be safe and sound for my nephew. (He may be able to put it to tougher tests later, but we're good for a while.) :) I really like this toy and highly recommend it.

I got this for my 6 month old, but her 4 month old BFF LOVES it more than she, as well as my friends 3 yr old son who comes over often...would definitely say it's a great attention grabber my 6 month old started dancing to the songs which she had never done before...it pretty much covers every childrens song out there, as well as colors, shapes, letters & numbers...the bonus CD has all the great kids songs I couldn't remember (as I make up lyrics each day to sing to my daughter LOL) so I quickly downloaded it to her IPOD so she could listen in her pack n play...overall VERY HAPPY with the purchase.... & saved $7 from what Babies R Us was charging....was even $2 less than Walmart...what a steal :-)

I ordered the Fisher-Price Laugh and Learn Learning Puppy for my grandaughter because she loves her two bassets and because of the past experience with Fisher-Price products. From the fist moment that she saw the puppy, she loved it. It is very attractice and loaded with intellectual stimulation. She and I are most pleased with the purchase.

Honest reviews on Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Love to Play Puppy with Bonus CD

If you're choosing between this one and the Leap Frog My Pal Scout, go for Scout! My daughter now has both. However, I wouldn't buy this puppy again. The buttons/sensors in his hands/feet, etc, are way too sensitive! If you're dancing it around while it sings the ABC's, be prepared for it to stop and say "FOOT!" and discontinue because it doesn't take much to interrupt it. You barely have to push the buttons which, for some children, may be a good thing. However, it annoys me and I'm sure it will eventually annoy my child. I only spent $16 on this on a lightning deal here on Amazon, or I'd probably be sending it back. I've considered it... Besides Scout being better, you can also plug it into your computer and have it "learn" your child's favorite animal, food, color, and even your child's name... It can pronounce most names. I'm so much more of a fan of Scout...

I bought this toy for my 5-month-old daughter because my niece had the same one when she was a baby and I personally loved it! When I took it out of the packaging, I removed the demo tab, but it apparently stayed in demo mode. It would only sing part of each song, including the alphabet song only going up to the letter "p." I thought it was defective and prepared to return it. I read other reviews and realized that this was not uncommon. I took the batteries out and sorta jiggled the tabs next to the battery case with a blunt metal object. :-) After that, it worked fine and we both love it!

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is a fun toy and it is perfect for its target audience of 6-12. An adult or older child will need to help with initial setup, at least for younger kids, but once the setup is done (about 5-10 minutes), it is simple enough for a child to use.

What's In The Box:

* Electronic Journal holder (password activation and built in light)

* Small spiral notebook.

* 1 "invisible ink" pen.

* Instruction pamphlet.

The journal itself it not electronic. All your writing goes on a small journal which is a spiral notebook. This "journal" sits inside case. It is this case that runs on batteries and can be opened/locked electronically with a password.

The case is cute, it is pink with gray trim, and measures 11.25" high by 10" wide by 2" thick. It is made of plastic.

Out of the box, you need to remove a small plastic cover on the back of the case. For this you need a small Phillips head screwdriver. This reveals the battery compartment. Install three AA batteries (not included).

Once you put the battery compartment cover back on, you are ready to "program" the journal. There is one large button on the outside of the journal case. This opens the journal.

Inside the case you will the invisible ink pen and the spiral journal. Above these are a movable light arm and four buttons.

The four buttons control:

* Menu Button: Used to navigate through options, which are to record a greeting, record a password, record an alert, and record a sign-off message.

* Record Button: After you use the Menu button to reach your desired option, press `Record' when you are ready to record and a green light comes on to let you know it is recording.

* Light Button: Turns the light on and changes the light color. First the blue light comes on (to read what you write with the invisible ink pen). If you press the button again, the plain "white light" comes on for reading in the dark. The light is on a movable arm so you can rotate it over the journal and back again.

* Lock Button: This button sets your security level (password off, low and high).

How to use:

Open the journal and press the Menu button to create your recordings. You can record the greeting, alert, and sign off in any voice. For the password, you must use the voice of the little girl who will be using the journal. Once you set up the password, any time you want to open the journal you press the gray button on the outside. You will be prompted to speak your password. If you provide the correct password, in the right voice, the case will open

You can record a variety of ways. For example, I recorded my voice for my daughter's journal, with a greeting of "Hello Kyleigh", and a sign off of "Goodbye, your journal has been secured." The alert plays when someone tries and fails on two attempts to access the journal password. For this my daughter recorded "Hey mind your own beeswax!"

As far as password options, you can choose `Off' which means that anyone can open the journal case by pressing the gray button on the case. If you choose `Low' the password can sometimes be used by other people (I had my older daughter try to mimic my 10 year olds voice and she was able to access the password, as their voices are close enough. If you select `High' the password is a bit more secure, but your child has to remember to say the password as close to the same as possible each time, or the journal may not open.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you choose the Low option and decide to change to High, you MUST re-record your message BEFORE you close the journal. Otherwise it is very unlikely that your password (recorded under low option) will be recognized. It's not the end of the world, you can always reset the device with the button on the back, but then you need to re-record all your greetings.

Once open, you can open the journal notebook, remove it from the case, etc. The invisible ink pen works well. You write on a page and don't see what you wrote at all, but using the blue light reveals your writing in white text. The regular light is bright enough for reading at night. The journal pages are white and unlined. I would have preferred lines on the pages.

There is also a "secret compartment", which is a recessed part of the case which you will see if you remove the journal notebook. The recess is large enough for a girl to put a few small keepsakes in it.

I have had no problems with the passwords working and the device opens and shuts as expected. I think any young girl who is at an age to have her own "private diary" is going to love this, and the ability to feel she has her password on it, etc.

My lone knock on this is that the journal (the spiral notebook) has 50 pages in it (25 sheets of paper front/back), so if your daughter does any writing at all, you'll need a replacement in no time. Plus you really can't use the left-hand side of the pages unless you take the notebook out of the case, as there's no good writing surface beneath the left pages when the journal is open. As younger kids write large and like to doodle, you may need a replacement in short order. The notebook is about 6" tall x 4" wide.

Overall, a decent toy. I think just about any girl interested in a little journal would like it.

My granddaughter is 8 and she loved her journal. She is able to use a password to open her journal and found it to be so enlightening to do this. She love it tons!!

Honest reviews on Password Journal 8

A password journal is always something i would have loved to have as a young girl, so ofcourse i jumped at the opportunity to try one out.

First off you'll need to insert the batteries to get the product opened, there is even a secret compartment inside. A great gift idea would be to put something in that compartment like a necklace before gifting it.

My daughters friend has an older version and it opens no matter who said the secret word, however we were all pleasantly surprised that only my daughters voice could open it up.

You can also record things for incorrect passcodes and when you close it so that's fun. The light inside that shows the writing is fun but I've caught my daughter up past bed time doodling..oh to be young..

Its a decent price and would make a great gift for most young girls. Id recommend the product to others for sure.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program Pink. Girls like pink. And purple. And blue. Those three colors; pink, purple, and blue seem to be the main colors for girls in the 9-11 age group. A diary that locks with the strong potential to keep snooping younger siblings and hopefully parents out of private thoughts. Wonderful! Got this for my daughter and so far she loves it. Have not had any issues with unlocking the deivce or her using it. Good choice.

I use research-grade microscopes in my work and bought this economy model for home use for looking at bugs and pond-life. The microscope was delivered promptly and well packed. Overall I was quite impressed. The image was sharp and showed no noticeable color fringes or distortion as found in "toy" microscopes. The instruction booklet was generic and did not cover this particular model (although principles were the same). This model is described as "reverse stereo" which means the image is right side up and moves in the same direction as the object. Variable magnification was achieved by rotating the objective turret (1x and 3x) and changing eyepieces (5x and 10x). The latter needed a small crosshead screwdriver which was not supplied. Another tool was supplied with no description which might be for lifting the bulbs from their mounts. Both top and bottom bulbs (12V 10W) got very hot in use, so pond water samples would quickly warm up. There are no condenser lenses associated with the light sources so they illuminate an area much bigger than the observation area , but they are bright enough for viewing. The field of view seems smaller than other stereo microscopes that I have used (20 mm for 10X magnification) and the eyepieces have to be close together to get a satisfactory stereo image (may be a problem if you have a big nose!). The rubber eye guards provided were a little too big to get the proper eye to eyepiece distance and so further reduced the field of view they are not necessary. However, all these quibbles are minor compared with the basic quality of the image. It was a delight to watch Rotifers swimming between strands of Spirogyra in 3 dimensions. I would rate it 5 for value-for-money and 3 compared with top grade microscopes hence my overall 4 rating.

Review of LeapFrog LeapStart® Learning Table

LeapFrog LeapStartĀ® Learning Table
Customer Ratings: 5 stars

My son received this table when he was 8 months old, and still plays with it on an almost daily basis. The legs are detachable, I guess so it can be placed on the floor for babies, but we never did that... This table helped our son into a standing position, and encouraged him to "cruise". The variety of music it provides is great, and hasn't even begun to get old yet (even for mom & dad). Now at almost 2, I've noticed that my son is starting to make his own music instead of just "pressing buttons" . Pressing the drums, the piano, then back to the drums... I'm sure this table will last for years to come, especially once he becomes more interested in his letters, numbers, and colors. I would DEFINITELY recommend this product for EVERY child!

I just recently splurged on this for my 8 month old son. He is just learning to stand up on his own and is constantly trying to pull things off tables or bother our poor dog. I quickly realized that an activity table might keep those busy hands busy.

I agonized over the purchase, for it was going to be the first big toy I bought for our small house. I looked at the Microsoft Intelli-table, but it looked a little Atari-ish with it's flashing lights in the middle. I looked at the Fisher Price models with the blocks (which were cheaper), but I figured that Legos would be the block of choice soon enough.

I was sold on the LeapStart b/c of the musical theme. It has a banjo that plays bluegrass, a compartment that scats when you open it, it has shapes that plays the drums, a bass that plays the bass, etc. But here is the best part, it is all real music, not some electronic rendition of good music, the real stuff. For parents, it is a godsend, b/c it is not offensive to listen to over and over again (but it does have volume control for those times when you need it).

My child was actually squealing with delight when I gave it to him. It is now his favorite thing to play with, and he has finally found something more interesting than crawling after our old dog. I would have paid much more for this toy.

Best Deals for LeapFrog LeapStart® Learning Table

I could not wait until Christmas to let my 8 month old play with this toy. It was incredibly easy to assemble. It has detatchable legs for those babies who can sit up but cannot stand or just prefer to sit, it has two modes: one is learning numbers, colors letters, and more, and the other mode is a musical mode, the child can change the modes simply by fliping the page of the book. The music is great it is not your standard old mac donald. It has an upbeat jazzy sound. There are grippers on the bottom of the legs so that when baby leans against the table it doesn't move away from her/him. Emily loves this table, in fact when I held her up and faced her toward it her little feet couldn't move fast enough for me to help her over to it. The makers of this table have definately put serious thought into it. So far it is well worth the money!!

Honest reviews on LeapFrog LeapStart® Learning Table

My son just turned a year old and although he had a ton of learning toys, lap toys, and musical toys, I wanted to invest in a "stand-up" toy. I was sure I wanted an activity table--but which one?? There are so many to choose from!! After studying the tops of endless tables, I came to the conclusion that this was the best one--this was obvious, but was it worth the money? I could get other activity tables for less, even half the price, but they didn't seem as inviting and exciting. I hesitate on spending too much on one item at his age, but after lengthy consideration, I decided to purchase this activity table. I must say, that I never once regretted by decision because it is well worth every penny. Not only is it educational, it also provides tons of entertainment. It took about 30 seconds for me to assemble it, and the fun began right away.

This table has 2 settings; words (letters/numbers) and music/song. There is a "book" in the middle of the table, and the page the book is on determines what mode it is in. When the page is turned, bright lights around the table light up and a mystical sound is heard which is sure to mesmerize your little one. This table has EVERYTHING--shapes, colors, the alphabet, numbers, a piano, several other musical instruments and noisemakers--and my son's favorite part--a small compartment to open and close and to keep busy putting small objects in and out of. There are so many different activities on this table that a child never seems to get bored, especially since each activity serves two functions. For instance, there are 3 shapes to push. In talk mode, it speaks "red square", "yellow triangle", etc. In song mode, different drums are heard when each is pressed. This is just one corner of the table--I couldn't possibly go into everything this table has to offer.

I take great comfort and knowing that when my child is playing with something and is so involved in it, that he is learning his abc's or how to count to ten or learning his colors or shapes at the same time. The look on his face as he dances to the music is priceless. I bought this item for my son's first birthday and it is still a huge hit to this day. My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner. I recommend that as soon as your child starts pulling himself up, that you buy this toy. My child hasn't lost interest and I haven't needed to replace the batteries, oddly enough. The legs are sturdy and just the right size. It keeps my child busy for a long block of time, which, of course, is very nice for Mom!! You may pay a little more for this than the other activity tables, but you will not regret it. This is a quality item, with many educational and stimulating aspects, and I recommend it highly.

We have all of the Bible Champions Games, and my kids enjoy them all. My kids are ten and seven and they really enjoy them. I consulted my ten year old and she gave it the ratings and titled the review. Shs says the game is challenging, yet fun and not frustrating. Her seven year old brother plays it without any problems as well. As a parent I love that I don't ahve to worry about violence etc.

Got this for my 2 year old for Christmas, and she loves it. We don't really play the bingo game, but match the cards to the board and she is enthralled.

We bought this game after playing farm bingo, and my son loves it! He just turned five, and it is really easy for him since the recommended age is 3+. It is still great for practicing turn taking, staying focused, and expanding vocabulary. He wants us to play it with him everyday!!
