We ordered this from Insect Lore. We ordered the fish eggs, searched the store to find the exact type of water they need (whole list of types you can not use), set it up exactly as instructed.......eggs did not hatch. Had to order another batch of eggs. Again set it up just as instructed and again no fish! The brine shrimp hatched but no kill fish. Very frustrating kit for a kid when all they are looking forward to is those stupid little eggs to hatch and they get nothing. The tank is a neat design, we will probably just go to the fish store for some guppies. Not worth the frustration for a 6yr old boy.

I did my research before I bought this. There are YouTube videos of people playing it, and Amazon has mp3s. I wanted to know what I was planning to get myself into--make sure I'd be able to tolerate the sound once I began playing it.

I bought it [from a different seller] at a very cheap price (though, after shipping, was a couple more dollars than on this page). I wanted something cheap in case I decided to abandon the endeavor after a short while. No point in paying hundreds of dollars on something I won't be playing months, hopefully years, from now.

It came in a huge box, and when I opened it discovered the actual instrument was in a small box (at least four times smaller than the box it shipped in). It deceived me into thinking it had come already put together. Nope. When I opened the [small] box, there was an assortment of sticks...Thankfully the stringed bamboo bars didn't come disassembled. Otherwise I may have given up then.

There were instructions on the outside of the box, but I didn't understand them, so I just began sticking legs into the holes of the main part of the stand. It wasn't until after I got it together that I realized dots were painted on the sticks to match the hole with the stick...

Don't worry--if you can't understand the instructions, either, it's all right. The sticks will not fit into the holes in which they were not designed to be. I got a couple of the legs mixed up when I was fumbling around, and when it stood on its own, it was lopsided, and one of the legs fell out.

The strings have to be taut, otherwise the sound quality isn't as rich--the bottom bar shouldn't lay against the base or touch the base whatsoever. At first I was afraid to break the back part of the stand by pulling the string taut (the back stick feels much weaker than it really is), but I've actually had to tighten it a couple more times since I first put it together.

It plays very well. I don't play very loudly so as not to disturb the other members of the house. Even when I barely strike the bars a decent sound comes out. It can get pretty loud, though. When you strike it hard enough, the entire instrument bounces around--may want to take that into consideration. It doesn't do that so much on carpet.

There was a nail polish-like residue which began forming on the bars I played most often. My friend told me was because the instrument was new or handmade or something...

There are some songs I can't play on it, mostly because the notes in the song drop down lower than the lowest bar on the instrument. The notes of the bars are indicated on both the instrument and the box in which it came, which is very thoughtful of the makers. The notes are as follows, from the lowest bar to the highest: C D E F G A H C D E F G (not sure why there's no B note).

I was looking for a portable instrument, and because this is relatively small and lightweight, I assumed it would be easily portable. However, after disassembling/reassembling it twice (once to go to my friend's house for the weekend, another time when I arrived back home), I found out the strings holding the bars don't hold the same. This meant when I came back home and set it up, the bottom bar was somehow resting on the stand, which it hadn't done since before I tightened the strings. Most of the strings holding the bars together had shifted, and I have yet to get it back to its original state. This doesn't affect the playing too much, but it does bother me because when the strings shifted and I set it up, the alignment was off (the bars didn't ascend in a normal staircase fashion, rather some were lopsided).

Overall it's a wonderful instrument. It's relatively sturdy (I've let my year old brother play it, and he bangs on it and tries to grap hold of the bars). I've had it for about a month now, and it's endured quite a bit of abuse. I'm happy with my little t'rung.

Bought this for a three year old who loves gum, numbers, and puzzles--trifecta. You use a magnetic pen to pull the gumballs into the gumball machines. I would rank it a five star, but the magnetic pen is stronger that it needs to be and will pull three gumballs at a time, which can frustrate a child who wants the red gumball, and the red gumball only.

I saw this at our local library and knew I must own one. It is expensive, but will withstand a lot of abuse and use.

PURPOSE OF PURCHASE:

My daughter had just turned 11 months old. I was looking for a fill-and-spill toy that she would not outgrow as quickly as many other baby toys and I was hoping for something that she would use for creative play for the next couple of years. We were skeptical at first because we felt that, although the price is reasonable, we still did not want to throw away $20 and she might not care for it or it may be a little mature for her.

I am so glad that we bought it. It was the last of the gifts that we bought for her first Christmas, and I just know it was meant for her to have.

DESCRIPTION:

Everything is made of hard plastic, except for the checked "blanket" which is like a handkerchief. The basket is packed pretty full with everything inside, but she can easily fit it all back in without help. She loves carrying all of the pieces around in her little hands. (There are many pieces and you don't want them lost!) The full basket is a little heavy for a baby. She did not carry the entire basket around until recently (14 months) and still prefers not to, but she has always taken it off of her toyshelf and sat with it closeby in the floor. I can watch this thing growing with her. She likes to put the food pieces and forks in her mouth. And she LOVES the sounds it makes when the lid opens and closes. She loves the songs that it sings, and let me tell you, the voice is too cute and sweet. She dances while she plays and tries to sing.

POSITIVE:

I love it because it is easy to wipe clean (even though I haven't had to clean it yet), it is durable, it is fun, adorable, AND VERY educational!!

I had not realized before she started playing with it, but it teaches manners (saying please & thank you) and some prepositions, such as: put one cup IN the other cup, spread the blanket ON the ground UNDER the tree...a picnic WITH my friend. It sings the colors of the rainbow. It counts up to four often. It sings short songs about how many sides each shape has, and each of the three foods on each plate is a different shape (triangle pie slice, square cracker, circle orange slice). It asks you to find each shape. The plates are similar to wooden puzzles (only plastic), and she is learning to put the foods in place.

She also LOVES music, and this thing is constantly singing. It even reminds you to push the butterfly button to hear a song. She can play with this toy 100% by herself, and I know that she will not outgrow it any time soon because it is also my favorite of her toys. And when her cousins (4yrs & 11yrs) came to visit, this is the toy that they played with for 2 hours straight! She plays with it more than any other toy (and she has too many toys). We have never had to replace the batteries since she first got it.

NEGATIVE:

The cups are not intended to hold liquids. They each have two holes in the bottom that you could almost stick a pencil through. I like that she will have to use her imagination and also I will not have to worry about the inside of the picnic basket getting sticky with juice and I am glad that ants will not be stored in there. (But some people would rather have usable cups, and if your child tried to use them, it would be messy, so I thought I would mention this.)

The only real negative that I can find is that the talking basket may ask you to find the triangle, but it has no way to know whether you found it, so it does not correct you or praise you. It never responds or gives hints or anything. So basically, it just randomly asks your child to find things, but she may never know if her answer was correct (or wrong!). Therefore, I recommend that Mommy plays with her.

BOTTOM LINE:

I say it is well worth every cent (and more)!

this is a great toy! very durable, bold colors. everything fits into the basket so it's easy to store and not lose pieces. My 18 month old daughter loves playing pretend and this is a great toy for her. Plus, all the food is a shape that fits in it's on spot on the plates, like a puzzle. It helps her with shapes, colors and I can get her to clean up when she's done. And she loves carrying this around the house.

This may sound weird, but I gave this to my man for his 40th birthday and well... boys will be boys... he loved it!! We were actually late for our dinner reservation because he got so into reading the booklet and checking out the colored tiles. I wanted to teach my preschooler the upper and lower case alphabet, and this was a great teaching tool! At first I put the uppercase letters on one side, and the lower case letters on the other side to make the game a little easier. Now we don't have to do that. The cards are all put down totally random. My 4 yr old now knows upper and lower case letters. Great product! Also, cards are very thick and sturdy. A great buy!

My kids love playing this my 2 1/2 year old gets so excited when she gets pairs then must know what every letter is very helpful fun way to learn letters. My 7 year old son is in love with the Didj my dad got him, and he only had the Jetpack Heroes that was included. So, I decided to add to his repertoire. After all, I know the Leapster wasn't much without the cartridges and the included games weren't ever nearly as fun as the ones we bought.

I was a little concerned that the Star Wars game would have the same math concepts he worked on in Jetpack Heroes, but it is different. Instead of addition, subtraction, multiplication, my son gets to work on fractions, place value and geometry.

I tried it myself and there is enough math to keep my son thinking. He gets a to be a jedi with a light saber who goes around a maze of hallways killing bad guys and while trying to survive. He has to stop once in awhile and answer questions like which pie chart shows 1/10 colored in or what number in 693 is in the hundreds place or how many sides does a pentagon have.

For those worried about violence, it is cartoon violence against robots and there is no blood. I'd say it`s about as violent as Tom and Jerry, except the robots die (disappear). That may not be enough for some, but at least you know what you are getting into.

My son loved his Leapster, but he said he's not going back. Didj is much better. He likes being able to customize the game. I like being able to track his progress and help choose what concepts he's working on.

Originally we had BIG problems with the Didj not being recognized by our Mac. This has happened off and on a few times since we got it resulting in the boys losing their hard earned bitz. I was close to sending it back when it finally started working and I saw how much my boys liked it. My 2 boys, 8 and 5 yrs old, LOVE to play the Star Wars game we bought and Power Pack game that comes on the Didj. The boys also love to create their own Didji characters online which then download onto the Didj. My 5 year old guesses a lot to answer the questions so I'm not sure really if he is learning math facts or learning how to guess. My 8 years old IS practicing his math facts while playing. Leapfrog needs to polish the Didj and Leapsite to work together better. We love Leapfrog products and have bought a L-Max handheld. My 5 year old prefers the Didj to his L-Max which we cost us way more $. At first my 8 year old even played the Didj over his DS, but DS seems to be preferred right now though is not as educational. I'm glad I got the Didj for less than $30 on Amazon and I wouldn't recommend paying the $89.99 full price until the Didj gets an upgrade.

Star wars is a math oriented game that is great for grades 1 3 and review or refresh of basic math for older kids. More difficult math for upper levels needs a different game. I can program the game to specify the areas each child needs to work on (multiplication for my eldest, two digit adding and subtracting with carrying/borrowing for my middle and +/0-12 for my youngest) I highly recommend this for fun and or math!

My son got the Diji for Christmas this year from Santa and he literally didn't put it down for three days. With the after X-mas sales I got him this game. Along with other parents I worried that it may be too old for him (he is 6) and might be too much of a challenge with the math skills. No, he did just fine. He only asked me for a little bit of help, and thanks to his sister-who got online and spent some of his "credits" he has new challenges and new stuff for all of his games. Way to go Diji, keep the cool games coming and this will stick around for a long time.

I see a lot of reviews over-analyzing this thing. It's a kids show! We just started doing the elf on the shelf with my 3 year old daughter and she gets absolutely giddy every time she sees her elf. This was on CBS a couple weeks ago and we recorded it. Last night she watched it 3 times in one sitting! I love seeing her light up every time she watches this movie. A couple reviews have mentioned that the movie isn't about the intended purpose of the doll. I say, who cares! It's a sweet little story about kids believing in Santa. However, in my opinion, 15 bucks is a little much for a 25 minute show and that is probably my only gripe about it.

I have 2 little girls, ages 3 (almost 4) and 5 1/2. This is the 3rd Christmas we've enjoyed our adopted elf, who's name is Bicklebaum Woodle, or Bickle for short. Both of my girls have been a bit lukewarm about the Elf tradition, their interest coming and going.

I was delighted to see the release of the movie this year, and we watched it together as a family tonight before bed. We all really enjoyed it! After the movie was over I said "Bedtime!" and my daughters ran over to the Elf's current position on the fireplace mantle to say "GOODNIGHT BICKLEBAUM! MERRY CHRISTMAS!" Quite honestly, it's the first time they've said goodnight to him.

From a parent's perspective, it's wonderful. The story is cute, the character voices nice, animation and music well done, and a movie I don't think I'll mind playing over and over again.

I think the storybook that comes with the elf is a bit long, and leaves room for a lot of "what if" questions. My kids usually get squirmy before the end, and they love for me to read to them. I love that this movie does a great job of filling in some gaps left by the book, answering a lot of questions that inquisitive kids might ask. It shows how each Scout Elf gets his or her assignment at the North pole. Some elves are headed directly to a family. Some elves are headed to a place such as 'Bob's Books and Things' where a family can adopt them. As each elf leaves the north pole, they are even shown getting into their box, Santa adding in a book, and the box being closed up, looking EXACTLY like the box you see in stores er ADOPTION CENTERS.

The movie follows the story of a particular Scout Elf who has been assigned to the McTuttle family, who has 2 little twin girls full of holiday cheer and wonder, and a 9-year-old boy named Taylor who isn't sure he believes in Santa or Christmas magic anymore. The McTuttle family name their elf Chippey, activating his magic. We watch as Chippey chooses meaningful places in the house to return to each night that might inspire Taylor's belief in Christmas. Taylor doesn't believe and scoffs the entire concept, and much to his sisters' dismay, he touches Chippey to prove his point. The girls run away in tears and Taylor races after them. Chippey manages to use the last of his magic to fly up the chimney, and other scout elves on the way back to the North Pole carry him home.

While Chippey is laying in North Pole hospital bed, the McTuttle family is upset that they haven't seen Chippey for a few days, including Taylor. Taylor writes a letter to Santa, saying that he's sorry for having touched Chippey, thus taking his magic away. Santa shows the letter and enclosed photograph to Chippey, proving Taylor's belief, which reinstates his magic, allowing him to return to the McTuttle family. It really warms the heart to see Taylor's transformation from skeptic to believer.

The movie is brief, less than 30 minutes, and easy to follow. It's a cute addition to this fun family tradition. I wish I'd had it in 2010 when we first adopted our Elf!

I have to face it our kiddos are much more meadia in tune that in the past. If they can watch it they will digest the information much more that just reading it.

This has been probably the best toy purchase I have made for my son (he is 16 months old). He can play with this toy anywhere and for a long time. He absolutely loves it. The sound are so real and entertaining. Most of the buttons are easy to push and some require a little more thought on his part (he has figured them all out now) which I totally love. I take this toy in the car and he will play with it and it is the only toy that he does not throw after a few seconds. I am buying a few more of these for some of his little friends for Christmas.

this was bought for my niece's birthday and it went through her and her younger sister before being handed down to my son who loves it. he has always loved noise making toys.

it seems to be a very durable toy. only one button sticks occasionally and that is after 5 years.
