It was not easy to find a xylophone that met my criteria for my toddler daughterI looked alot of places...then on amazon, I found a great price on this one, and it was a) wooden; b) colourful; and c) two octave. I expected a smaller, slightly clunky xylophone that would be just fine for my daughter's hyper musical outbursts, and if she liked it, we may upgrade in the future. NO NEED! This is a BIG, beautiful xylophone that is tuned well enough ( not 100% perfect pitch for those with a very sensitive ear, but pleasantly done and well made for an 'around 30$' childs/for fun instrument) and best of all, SHE LOVES IT! If there is a musically inclined toddler or younger child in your life, I would very highly recommend this xylophone!!

First of all, all wood xylophones have a softer, deader type of sound than the metal ones. That being said, this 15 note xylophone was pretty close in tune except for the middle yellow "E" note. I had some musicians come over and we determined that the "E" key was a little low.

I found out how to fix any keys that are "off". All the keys have a cut slot in the middle bottom of each key. This is the preferred method of tuning the key. If a key is too low in pitch, just add some wood glue into the slot and let it dry. If it is still low, add some more in the slot. This will bring up the pitch (I had to completely fill in mine to make it sound good). If the key is too high in pitch, just cut the slot a little deeper. Do this a little at a time. Soon, your wooden xylophone will play very nicely.

Santa brought this for our nine year old..I was surprised that it was wooden (SHE picked it out, not me) but evidently that's what "xylo" means-wooden...lovely sound, notes are engraved on the keys so she is able to convert tunes easily..

as far as toys goi will pay the extra money for things not made in china. (and we live on a single incomeand not a high one..) but it's worth it to meand i have more ease watching my six month old chew on these and put these in her mouth knowing there is no lead paintplus she loves the bright colors of the blocks and will play with these for a long time. they are all different shapes and colorsi like that they are wooden and not plastic too.

I got these for my one year old and he has really enjoyed them. The large one or two pegs per block make it easy for small hands to stack. Also, the pegs make it so the blocks don't fall over from a slight bobble. These blocks are quite durable and are a quality product. I like them so much I have started giving them as gifts.

These blocks are great!!! They have a stain-like paint applied to the exterior and the connect parts are left unfinished. There are 4 rectangular blocks, 2 cubes, 2 small cylinders, 2 large cylinders, 2 triangular shaped blocks all painted various colors and one large unfinished block. Each piece fits perfectly together. My one year old son loves to build and knock these blocks down. They have a great natural sound when they hit the floor. The blocks are easy for him to grasp. A prior reviewer stated these blocks were made in China but they are not, they are Made in Germany who maintains high standards for children's toys. I want to be able to allow my son to play with toys that are non-toxic and not worry whether or not he puts them in his mouth. I would have liked this kit to contain more than 13 blocks but it was well worth it.

I was looking for a while for a first blocks for my 1 year old. And this is it. They are easy for him to grab. They are easy to stack and the peg and hole design helps to be stacked without using a force (like some plastic blocks). I was worried about an amount only 13 but it seems that for my little one it it just enough . Later we can buy more and we definitely will, because they are really pleasurable to play with. They are finished with a great quality (not like others I had in my hands). Colors are bright and paint is non toxic.

These blocks were perfect for our 1-year-old son. He finds them interesting, but challenging to stack and unstack. If you sit down with him and show him how to stack he tries to do it himself and can do it sometimes, getting better with practice. They're also good to chew on or practice putting in and taking out of containers.

13 is more than enough to have in the set. I think there's a larger set that would be overkill for a baby, it would just give you a lot more to find and pick up.

The triangular piece is not good to step on with bare feet, so parents should be careful ;-)

They are well-made, durable wood blocks with brightly-colored paint. Very wholesome toy.

We bought this game for my daughter's sixth birthday. She is an early reader and is very eager to read and play reading games. After ten minutes of playing the game, she told me that she had not played any reading games yet. After she went to bed, I played the entire game (as my newborn slept in my arms). This is what I found:

A. There are many characters that get introduced and there is a predetermined sequence to the quests (which are short games). Each character has his/her own game. As you complete these short games more characters and year book photos become unlocked.

B. There are five main themes to the games

1. Games where you need to aim at a target with a moving obstacle in the way. Example, mini golf type games where the windmill is the obstacle. The object in the way is very slow and there is not much of a challenge to these games.

2. wack a mole type games where you need to touch the animals as quick as possible. One of the many characters is a magician and you need to tap the hat when it wiggles to find the frog (only place where there is magic). There is a degree of challenge because you need to be pretty quick towards the end.

3. Slicing games: wood, paper, or eggs move across the screen and you need to slice the objects in half.

4. Get the object to land between 2 points; you need to bring the stylus back the correct amount to send it flying with the goal to land between 2 points. I found these games frustrating because the unit did not always register my activity.

5. Reading games These games are very few but are good games when you do encounter them. Also, when you finish a reading game it does ask the question, "Do you want to play again?"

I played the game straight through and kept accepting the next quest. I found out later, as you complete quests you unlock photos in the "year book" section. When you click on the photos, they all look blank. The photos are like a scratch card with a picture underneath. There are three characters in each picture with their names on the bottom of the page. You need to match the name tag to the correct character.

In a nutshell: I completed the quest games in maybe an hour. Of that hour, only about 10 minutes involved games with reading or letter recognition. I did not find a way to select just reading games. After completing the games, it took about 8 minutes (being generous) to match the name tags to the characters. Players can go to the photo section anytime and scratch the pictures they have unlocked.

Our goal was to purchase a game with a focus on reading which is why I gave it a 2. I do feel that we will find use for the game in other ways:

1. In the car, my daughter was frustrated with moving Tinker Bell through some gears and felt she was no good. Her confidence was immediately restored with this Leap School Reading game because the games are short and after each game they give you very positive feedback. Within moments she responded, "I am good at this."

2. Leap School Reading may be a good learning tool for my almost three year old. Not with the focus of reading but rather how to use the stylus in different ways.

There are lots of things you do in this game.

You have to match letters that are facing the correct way. You have to tap on Hats when they wiggle, you learn about Cause and Effect, Counting and searching for things. There is plenty to keep the kid interested with several different characters that get introduced.

My daughter who is 6 and is in Kindergarten really enjoys this.

Most of this game consists of listening to characters introduce themselves or playing games that involve cutting objects in half with the stylus or tapping objects, and only a few games involve any word recognition. Previous 2 star reviewer hit it right on the head. Lots of mini games with mostly easy speed and coordination games and one out of every 4 games in the sequence are "educational" as far as reading goes. Yes you can read some stuff while setting up the mini games but there is also a narrator so its not that educational. My 6 year old is a VERY good reader (reading 100 page chapter books in 3 days or less now) so this has no educational value to him. His younger brother (will be 4 in a month) has little interest in the leappad so far. My 6 year old played this game once in the 6 months he has had it. I played it today and found it to be LAME. They watched me play the game so maybe it sparked some interest? Get puzzled is by far my 6 year olds FAVORITE game.

This is listed as having a smooth side and a rough side. It does, but they are of differing quality.

The rough side, is about the texture of typical construction paper, and is very even in appearance.

The smooth side, is a polished surface, but the appearance is not even. There are streaks through it. If you've ever seen a concrete wall which was poured with wood planks as supports, and leaves the grain in the concrete; it looks like that but smooth. It's like black-on-black wood grain.

-If you need a matte finish for background, the "rough" side is great. (it's not very rough)

-If you want semi-gloss, the smooth side is a bit uneven, unless you're covering it up with loads of other items.

-It's listed as heavyweight. It's about the thickness of typical inkjet paper, not butcher or packing paper.

-It's not flimsy/fall-apart like construction paper, so it holds up reasonably well to folding. Tears nice along a fold, both directions.

For chalk, consider some chalkboard spraypaint instead.

4/5 because of the smooth side.

This is cheap entertainment. I use it to cover our 48" round table for coloring. My 2 year old loves to color the whole table. If I use both sides of the paper, it'd cost about 25 cents a time, and it entertains her for at least a couple hours. Can't beat that with a stick! The paper is nice and thick and I'm sure I'll use it for other things such as wrapping paper. Shipping was fast too.

These guys must have laughed hysterically when they decided to call this paper Heavyweight... or even White for that matter, and just for fun, made up the word Duo-Finish.

First off, the paper itself was wavy and completely uneven, almost like it had been exposed to moisture or humidity. It was not smooth at all, is an icky, off white color, and both sides were equally crappy. It's as thin as cut-rate copy machine paper. Unlike the photo, it does not come on any kind of core, and the center is wound so tight you can't slide it onto any kind of rod to use as 'roll' paper unless you spend a half hour to hand loosen it. Even if you bother, it will end up sagging on whatever hanger rod you put it on instead of sit in a clean roll, making it very awkward to use.

You can completely forget trying to use it as cheapo photography background paper, and is so crappy looking, will show in anything but the most blurred backgrounds. I can't imagine it's much good for anything EXCEPT letting a child scribble with crayons on it. It's basically going to end up as wadding for shipping/package filler.

Seriously, pass this junk right on by and purchase a decent brand...

It's pathetic.

you say the item is "heavyweight" but you can see through it. you say it has a smooth side and a textured side, there is no difference with the two sides. paper is too thin for watercolor which is what i wanted it for. very disappointed. if i could get my money back on it i would.

As a stay-at-home-mom of 3, this stuff is invaluable! Worth every penny I spent on it. We've used it for so many things. Hung some up outside so the kids could paint, made a map, draped some over the kitchen table and made a fort, used it as a tablecloth for a playdough session, and of course just put some down so the kids could draw. Seriously, great, great, great! Oh, and I've even used it to wrap gifts, and let the kids decorate the paper. Planning on buying again when I'm out!

At first I was really impressed with the quality of the boards making up the pages of this book. That and the really vibrant colours that deepen as the water soaks into the page. Nothing like the 'magic' water paint books we have tried previously.

BUT, after just one use, my 3.5 year old son had coloured in a bit too hard with the supplied pen and it was only when the pages dried that we noticed that they were now covered with coloured scratches where the pen had damaged the surface of the pages.

I just feel it's a little expensive for something that was so easily damaged by a child's first use. If it were more affordable, I would give it a higher rating.

Perhaps better aimed at little girls who are a tad gentler when drawing!

I ordered this for my 5 yr. old son who loves watching Kai Lan on TV. He loves the Asian culture & loves learning Mandarin Chinese. I find it very beneficial for a young child to learn different languages & I definitely encourage it. He seems to like this game, but hasn't played it very much since he already knows what's being taught. I think he's too advanced for this game & that's why I gave it a 3. But for any younger child, I highly recommend it.

Cheap Advanced Fossil Collection

I bought this (out of pocket) for my students to experience the nature of fossils. They examine them under dissecting scopes. Everything needed is there key to the fossils, geologic time table, nice plastic tray to separate them from each other, the box they came in is nice, too.

The specimens are on the small side, but are recognizable.

This is probably one of the best rechargeable battery sets available. It keeps the tablet powered for quite a while. With heavy use, it could last you a full day. Only downside; I lost my batteries and needed replacements, I then discovered that Vtech doesn't sell batteries separately, meaning though I already had the charger, I still had to buy another complete unit cos different rechargeable batteries (Duracell) didnt work quite as well with the charger. Now I have 2 sets of chargers and one set of batteries but well, it's a small price to pay bcos as I said, it's probably the best available.

Never leave home without it. It should be included with the Tablet. Hopefully as V-Tech upgrades the manufacturers will eliminate the headache that comes with consumers not being offered it in the full packet.

Bought these for a 4 month old. Older kids had enjoyed the classic square blocks by Baby Einstein which are apparently no longer available. Thought we'd give the triangles a try, although was skeptical. They are a hit. Grab-able, bite-able, colorful, and engaging. I still miss the old blocks, but baby is happy with this next generation!

These triangle blocks were an instant hit with my 4 mo old son. He immediately took a liking to the mirror and the the noises on the blocks. He also seemed to like chewing on these. We had an issue with the elephant block as the cord broke on the trunk but the seller orangeonions was amazing about it and had a new order out to me immediately!
