This is a high quality xylophone. It is tuned correctly. I can even play along with songs on the radio that's how well tuned it is. I wish it had a larger range because it does sound so lovely, but for what it is, it is fabulous.

The wood that makes this xylophone is unknown. However, it is sanded smooth, and feels like satin. The sound is a little... plinky. Well, it is wooden, after all.

4M Potato Clock Review

Our 7 year old absolutely loves this clock! She is learning about energy provided by inanimate objects like potatoes. She has tried lemons and liquids with good results. Appropriate for a lesson that does not yell SCHOOL! Would be helpful for any child needing to learn to tell time.

This was exactly what we needed. Actually we only needed the clock, but it was nice to have the whole kit. Directions from the internet made it clear that you needed a particular, low voltage / current clock and there is NOWHERE to find one. My husband is an electrical engineer and he spent days looking for one with no luck (other than trying to build one, but time did not permit that).

Directions were the same as the internet, connected the clock and it worked. Our son brought it in for his 2nd grade science project and was able to explain in "2nd grade terms" what was happening. I highly recommend this product.

I needed a 1.5v clock for my son's science experiment. So I bought this product solely for the clock. It worked perfectly. The only knock on the item is the gauge of the wires from the clock to the power source are way too thin. Not sure the gauge, but they were significantly smaller that the smallest 20 gauge wire sold by the hardware store. We tested the 1.5v clock with a .8v battery, 1.4v battery and a 1.8v battery. The clock worked in every case! Great price and great fun!

This simple classic demonstrates the building of a battery using nearly electrolyte source (tomatoe, potatoe, lemon, orange, apple, etc). The clock is of very low quality with poor switches and half the indicator segments were non-functional out of the box. This was readily repaired, but is typical of these low cost kits. Regardless, my son (6) and I had a good hour or two of fun together playing with this and demonstrating the principals.

Of course my grandaughter had no clue about "potato clocks". But she was suitably amazed and it was a wonderful trip down memory lane for me!

The twisted wire connections felt fragile till I actually looked at the instructions and found out about the little pieces of tape that came with.

We wondered what we could accomplish if we put a hundred potatoes in series! ; )

Bottom line: a perfect, elegant little gift for a grandad to give.

Cheap V.Reader Animated E-Book Cartridge - Mr. Men/Little Miss

My daughter received a V.Reader and we have been slowly adding books. This book has characters from the Mr. Men series of books I remember as a child. This story is about a hunt for a missing sock all around Dillydale, and they ultimately find it in his messy bedroom.

There are 8 reading games that go with this story. I was going to tell you what each one does, but the book has been hijacked by the owner. I did get most of them though. What Happens is reading/listening for comprehension. Word Detective locates words with the chosen letter. Mr. Rude sniffs things and then has you figure out what he is smelling by matching the number of sniffs to the number of syllables in the word with Smelly Syllables. Sock Sorting matches upper and lower case letters. Show Time deals with opposites happy/sad, etc. Alphabetical Footprints has them figure out the next letter in the alphabet. Guess Who finds details to eliminate sock stealing suspects. I didn't get to Messy not Dressy, that one will have to be a surprise for you.

This one is suggested for ages 3-5 and that is pretty accurate. My 5 year old can complete most of the tasks without too much difficulty. I think this title has been discontinued, which is too bad. I'd search for it in the "used" section if you can. I hope they keep adding books and don't drop the product line like some companies tend to do.

I bought this game for my daughter (then two years old) last Christmas. It's a testament to its entertainment value that she still plays with it on a somewhat regular basis, she has learned many words on sight and I found out on accident yesterday how durable the cartridge is. Apparently, my husband found the cartridge on the floor and put it in his cargo pocket. Unknowingly, I proceeded to put the cargo pants through the washer and dryer with the game still in his pocket. When he saw me putting away the pants and alerted me to the mistake, we were going to throw the game away but decided to give it a try anyway... and it STILL worked! Amazing. I do not recommend doing this to any electronics, but I'm extremely happy it worked out in our case.

My children enjoy this game. Because they are always learning when they play it, I do not mind how long they play it. I bought it for my son who needed to practice multiplication for his grade. I watched my 5yr old son watch intently my older son playing this game. My 5yr old has learned some of his timestable. This game is able to sustain my very active 5yr old for hours at a time. I hope to find a similar one for addition and subtraction.

We had the free demo version for 2 days and my two kids are begging to play. No joke.

My 4th grader was in tears last year because of the timed tests at school (and hated doing them). So this past summer, I forced them to do flash cards, and got lots of resistance. The kids didn't WANT to learn their times tables and were determined to prove to me that they couldn't. (Maybe other kids aren't this stubborn / uncooperative.) But, the truth is, I can sympathize I hated learning my times tables too.

So if they will play -on their own -and practice the drills to defeat the ogre, I am psyched!

(Also, based on my training in pedagogy, the method seems sound: practice a bit, rest a bit, practice a bit more in several different ways, review.) I'm buying the upgrade version to see if we can get them through all the levels.

Back when my daghters were young, I used this product in it's beta stages because they struggled with multiplication so much. So now that my youngest child is in third grade, and loves to game, I thought why not give it another shot. He LOVED it. I can't believe the changes that I have seen. They have come a very very long way from the Beta stages of the game. It helps him remember what he is learning which is beyond awesome. And it put's it into a fun way to learn!

Easy to download, free option available, but we went for the deluxe so he can mix things up. Love the addition that you can change your character from male to female (not an option in the beta). Keep up the wonderful work, highly recommend for anyone who wants to help their child learn multiplication/division/addition/subtraction!

This guitar is great! It's a little darker, not as "spongy" looking of a paint job as the picture makes it look. Mine does not have a pick guard but that's ok with me. The kit came with a bag, a strap, a pitch pipe, and an extra set of strings.

I picked up this toy for a friend's daughter's birthday. My 9 year old son picked it up out of the cart and started playing with it. He liked it so much he climb in the cart, sat down, and played with it the whole hour we were shopping. He learned all of his eights multiplication facts. I was amazed. I'm impressed!!. My 8 year old son went through the entire second grade struggling with basic math facts. Teacher recommended flash cards over the summer but he hates them. Had the Turbo Twist in his hands for less than a week and he is already up to level 12 and computing three digit addition. He started off using the numbers on the twist as a slide guide but is now doing it from memory. If your kid loves Nintendo and Game Boys, this TOY will keep them interested. Love the headphone jack. I'll repeat...AWESOME!!

One of the previous reviews complained "The skill level can only be adjusted for the Learn It mode". It sound much like the 'Twist and Shout Math products' instead of the Turbo Twist Math! (both made by Lead Frog) I had originally received the Twist and Shout product at Christmas for my children and found them completely a waste of money. However, the Turbo Twist Math is absolutely FANTASTIC!! With the ability to upgrade at your child's level on-line is a fantastic feature. I would highly recommend this 'TOY' as my children have not put them down since Christmas. We have the Spelling and Math. They can take them both in the car, use their headphones and learn, learn, learn. They think it's fun. If in deed you have the Twist and Shout, I HIGHLY recommend exchanging it for the Turbo Twist Math. I think you will be surprised with the difference in these two toys!

The progress reports and the up grades that you can get off the web site are fantastic and a great way to keep it interesting for her and to inform me of how well she is doing. I bought this for my child to help her with her math facts better. I am pretty disappointed (I should have listened to my husband!) Flash cards would be just as effective and a lot less expensive. It is cumbersome to use and is not fast, even I can only answer 11 facts in 90 seconds (and it is not because I don't know them). I thought it would have be fast and have a snappy beat (along the lines of the Bop It Game. I was wrong on both accounts. It lost its appeal after about 1 hour.

There are so many free flashcard apps on the ipad/iphone that light up and make noises that seem to keep my childs attn better, but these will be fine once he gets a little older.

Best Fisher Price Learning Sensation Play with Letters Desk Deals

My 3 year old loves learning letters and phonics and trying to learn to read. She chose this toy at the toy store in reward for potty training. She couldn't wait to 'drag' those big block letters accross the board! I was so happy she chose something educational. We opened it and what a dissapointment! It is a GREAT CONCEPT! She loved dragging the letters accross the board to make sound (the name of the letter, phonics sound, and letter beginning with it) is said clearly when you drag a letter. The PROBLEM IS that it is just not refined enough. Literally a third of the time, the letters don't read. Even when your child drags the right letter it asks for, it sometimes will not read it giving them the feeling they got it wrong. It was very glad I was sitting there to tell her it was right and to keep trying. Sometimes she had to drag it again and again and it still wouldn't read and we would have to turn the thing off and on again and start with a new letter. I couldn't even get it to read 1/2 the time after she failed even after doing it perfectly as instructed in the manuel-which 3-year olds don't read so what good is touchiness like that in a toy! Total frustration within 10 minutes. The toy has an ON button that is not clearly marked, you just have to know that is the right one. The other 3 buttons for modes of play are confusing. You press the note button for a 'song' about the letter. But it takes forever to play this little intro song and meanwhile, your kid has dragged several letters accross the thing trying to make it work. By the time the intro song is over, they are over with it too and pressing other buttons to get it to work which only confuses the machine more. The other two buttons are a button that makes it ask for certain letters and a quiz button. The questions are fine. My kid was very excited to answer as she knows alot of her letter already and yet 1/3 the time it didn't respond to her rolling the letters. Again, this is a great fun and educational concept but not refined enough. I truly would have rated it the tops for education if I was only rating it when it worked! But, I don't see how it can teach when it doesn't respond to your child's answers half the time. I am going to keep trying to convince my little girl that she should bring this poor working toy back to the store and pick another reward but you know how hard that is for kid's to understand. She wants to play with it so badly but is already walking away from it each time she trys. I am so glad I opened the package carefully! Skip this one and get the little letter desk that comes with a magnetic chalkboard, word cards with cut outs where the letters magnetically fit into, and magnetic letters. It is not electronic but great fun and still taken out every other day here after 6 months. It is by Fisher-Price as well and I think it is called the ABC something and it is much cheaper and self-correcting in that the correct magnetic letters only fit in the word cards! My girl loved being able to 'spell words' with this. Good luck.

I love to purchase fun educational toys for my children and was excited to get this home for them. When each block is dragged across the desk it is supposed to "read" each block. The blocks should say the letter, the sound it makes and a word beginning with the letter. Unfortunately, the desk doesn't always read the letters and it often took several tries before it did. There are games that can be played too, but my children never got that far since they couldn't get it to respond properly. This would be a great toy if it worked as it is described by the manufacturer. Fisher-Price needs to improve this toy before I would recommend anyone to buy this. I think the LeapFrog Read and Write Phonics desk is a better purchase if you are looking for a toy that will help with letter recognition, phonics, writing, and spelling games.

My 2-year-old got this for his birthday--his one big present. After we'd gotten it out of the box, but before we could get the shrink-wrap off, he was ready to hit the keys. He gives us little "concerts" all the time. He isn't able to follow sheet music yet, but being able to play with this 2-octave mini-piano gives him ample opportunity to familiarize himself with the basics of the instrument.

We got this for my son for his first birthday (he is now 2 1/2), and he really loved it then. He really enjoyed banging the keys and making as much noise as possible. Over time he has grown out of it though. He now is all about guitars and drums ;) Every once in a while he will hit a few keys on it but that's about it. Even with that said, I still think it is awesome. The sound is excellent for a tiny piano. The colors are beautiful and it is very well made. My favorite thing is how durable it is!!! This piano has been knocked over, stepped on, beat up, kicked, and everything else you can think of...and it still works like a charm and looks brand new!! I absolutely recommend this product!!!

Nintendo Delux Set w/ ROB the Robot Reviews

I got this for my fiance for our 2 year, and it was the perfect gift. There are some problems, either the 72 pin connector isn't making an easily solid connection or there is some other problem. I have to wiggle the games around and talk sweetly to them to get them to register in the NES. Once they register they work fine.

The set I received though was in such great condition, I remember everyone having really beat up Nintendos as a kid. This set was very clean.

R.O.B. is in critical condition at this time. When I received him he wasn't closing his hands all the way. I read online that the glue used deteriorates and that it could have easily jiggled stuff loose in the shipping. I had kept it hidden away and hadn't tested it. If you get this I would make sure you plan time to test it, as repairs are commonly needed. We fixed it so that his hands opened and closed right after open body surgery and special glue for plastic but now he does not go up and down. There are thankfully a few different resources on repairs for him if you google "ROB the robot repair guide", and since they are probably all deteriorating at similar rates I'm guessing a lot of people the last few years are having the same problems.

I also about broke my back getting a 27'' Sony Trinitron tube television into the house. Remember, the duck hunt gun and ROB only work on an analog tube television. Something to do with the TV flashing lights at them to communicate. So if you do get this remember that you need to find someone with a decent tube television to sell you unless you have one already. Also factor in purchasing games. A lot of the ones I lovingly remember from childhood are expensive, and not always in good condition. You may want to buy cases since most of them come out of box. So by the time I bought this, the television, and ten games I had spent an insane amount of money, and haven't even bought cases yet.

Overall I am really glad I bought this instead of the action set or an out of box one. Even though there are only two games ROB can play, and he doesn't even really play them well, and it is yet to be proven that he will recover from being in critical condition, this really was the perfect gift. If you want something unique for that special geeky someone and are willing or able to put some serious resources into it, this is it. We have already made many happy memories playing with our Nintendo, and I'm sure are going to have fun playing and repairing it for years to come.
