I bought this manipulative set to use with my young daughter who was so bored at school that she was learning very little. These penguins are so fun she could not resist them. The penguins are about 2 inches tall and are made of a pleasant-to-the-touch vinyl type of material. There are ten colors, and ten penguins of each color = 100 penguins. After we've done math with the penguins, we practice counting and colors in Spanish. If you are interested in the coloring strip pictured with the listing, you should know that they provide you with one original as part of the instruction book, and you copy it to make the strips yourself. We are not using the coloring strips, ourselves.)

Be creative and come up with new ideas about color patterns and ways to count and do math, and this toy/learning resource will be wonderful. If you're expecting it to provide detailed game ideas and activities with rules, it doesn't. It's made of good quality material and will last. The penguins are cute, and colors vivid (brown looks exactly like chocolate!), but other than that, there are 100 identical shaped penguins and 10 bars to put them on, which semi hook together. My toddlers girls had the penguins on the ends of their fingers like finger puppets and the boy created an "army" of them lined up on his glacier bars. We each had a pile and traded with each other according to color.

This is bigger than I anticipated it to be. However my daughter counted to 100 after only the third time playing with them. And I have also found this great for so many other skills.

My preschoolers have loved using this toy to sort and make patterns. We put the penguins into artifical snow in our discovery area and my preschoolers have loved making the penguins 'rocket' out of the snow onto an iceberg by color or pattern.

My kids love these penguins because they are very colorful and fun. My 5 year old daughter likes to line them up and count them. We've worked on patterns, counting, and addition in the few days that we've had them. They look like a little army all lined up together. My almost 3 year old son loves to kidnap the penguins in his dump truck and take off with them.
