I purchased these bells as a gift for my two nephews, one is 3 months old one is 2 years old. It is difficult to find toys/gifts that would be appealing to two little ones at such different developmental stages but these fit the bill perfectly. Each bell is encased in a nice bright colored shell made out of molded plastic so there is nothing sharp for a baby to hurt himself on. If you turn it over you can see the striking mechanism work, and if you poke at it, it seems to be pretty sturdy (although I wouldn't say it's impossible to break).
To play the bells you just hit the button on top, which very easily triggers the mechanism and plays a tone. The baby can play with some assistance and reacts nicely to the colors, bear faces and sound. The toddler is more independent and likes organizing the bells, carrying them around, as well as playing them.
They are sturdy construction, intended more for years of intense classroom use, so I believe they will stand the test of time and allow the children to become more and more musical with them (they create a lovely 8 note major scale). The tone is not too strident or loud, so hearing them played will not make you want to destroy them. They also came in a nice plastic case for easy storage.
My one and only complaint is that each push button on top of the bells needs a slightly different amount of force to make it play, meaning that if you are playing along one might stick a little and you may need to try again. This makes playing little melodies a bit challenging on the bells but not impossible.
Overall I think it's a fun unique "toy" for children.
