Beautifully crafted, with tremendous potential for creativity. My 3.5 year old son loves to construct things, so this has provided endless entertainment. My only issue is that the wood dents if the blocks are thrown on a hard surface, a little bit of a problem when you have two little ones like I do -even though they are not really wild like that. Still, I bought this primarily for the mathematical value (teaching fractions and units, etc.). So I think it's worth it.

Like all Grimms blocks, these are stained and unvarnished and still have the feel of unfinished wood. The vibrant colors are gorgeous. You will not find colored blocks more attractive than those made by Grimms. Blocks are 4 cm x 4 cm x variable height. They vary in height from 1 cm to 10 cm by 1 cm increments. The unvarnished feel makes them less slippery and easier to build with than painted or varnished blocks.

These blocks are fabulous to build with, of course, but also great for encouraging algebraic thinking and measurement. The blocks of different heights means that kids have to figure out how to use different combinations of blocks to make level heights -what blocks can I use to equal a yellow plus a red one? How many dark green blocks to equal a purple one? And so on.

This set is great on its own and also makes a fabulous addition to a set of unit blocks like Melissa and Dougs. Many of our toys are unfinished wood, which I love, but I've noticed my kids are often drawn to the colorful toys. We all love to play with these beautiful blocks. I looked at all kinds of colorful wooden blocks and chose Grimms despite the signicantly steeper price tag. They are just far and away the most beautiful of all the blocks -gorgeous colors, and I love the stained rather than painted look. Also made in Germany. I have unfinished wood toys from China, but for painted wood that will be mouthed by my little ones, I prefer made in USA or Europe. Grimms is pretty much the only brand making sets of colored blocks outside China that I could find.

Note that the nature of the stains (unsealed with varnish) means that sometimes one color rubs off on another block due to intense friction or impact. This is rare, but it does happen and one or two may arrive that way (with a small mark of a different color). I've seen reviews of Grimms toys that were negative for only that reason. I've seen this with Holztiger too -it just comes with the territory of the more natural finishes. I can tell you that my 18-month-old sometimes sucks on the blocks (not recommended), and the colors don't seem to bleed at all.

I never thought I'd spend this much on blocks, but these are so beautiful and of such high quality that it was worth it. Our kids love these, and the trade-off between having fewer toys of higher quality like these blocks rather than a lot of less-expensive toys is worth it for us. And we love toys that have endless possibilities for play, so blocks are a favorite with us. We'll definitely continue to buy these for special occasions!
