My husband is 65 and I am 58. I have been eating organic for 25 years, and am so grateful that's it's getting easier to find. I thought we ate healthy because I always made my own bread, and cooked everything at home, rather than eating out. About 10 years ago we both started gaining weight, and we were not eating any differently. I had joint pain, and was developing high blood pressure. So, I started reading a lot of health books and got rather confused as to which direction to go in improve. We started with the Raw Reform book, and followed that for about a year. We lost weight, but after a year we began to put it back on and my blood pressure was still high. I thought maybe we were just stuck where we were. In the meantime, I had read many health books, and many of them referred to The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell. Then I read The China Study, and we became vegetarians for a year. We don't take these things lightly, and we are diligent in our eating habits. We don't really fall prey to whims and fads, and don't make changes every time I read another health book. I do a lot of reading, and try to sort what works best for us, and what is based on science and is time tested, but The China Study was very convincing. However, after eating less than 5% animal protein for a year, my hear started falling out and I developed Rosacea, in addition to my high blood pressure, and began gaining weight back.
I had read so many health books, all going in different directions. I had come to believe that PH balancing is important, and we had practiced food combining (for digestion) over the years, off and on, and knew it to work. I wanted to try to find things to read that would help tie some of these principles together, so I did a search on Google and found the Body Ecology book. I bought it on Amazon, and really didn't like the way it was written. Frankly, it's one of the worst health books I've ever read. But, the information in it seemed to make really good sense, and I did a lot of research on things that were stated as fact, with no references to back them up. I decided to give it a try, and my husband agreed. In the Body Ecology book, I learned about the book, "Right 4 Your Type", by Peter D'Adamo, and I read that also. Amazingly, I lost the weight, all of it, and my blood pressure went down to normal. I got off my meds. My skin began to clear. We both thrived on this diet.
That was two years ago. Since then, The Baby Boomer Diet book came out, and I got it right away. There are not any new principles in it, but there is much information to back up the principles, and more time behind it to prove how well it works. It is well written, and I find myself still going back and reading it over and over, in part, if not entirely.
So, after our journey, I believe we have found a way to live that is balanced and very healthy. Yes, we follow this book and live it. I still prepare 99% of our meals. My blood pressure is now low; usually 110/74. I am wearing clothes I thought I would never get back into. People tell me I look 20 years younger. We both FEEL GREAT! And my Rosacea.....it's GONE. My hair grew back, too.
Now, The Baby Boomer book only briefly addresses the Blood Type diet, and I want to also suggest that you read "Right 4 Your Type, by Peter D'Adamo, and also his GenoType book. These two books tie in together, and without knowing your "type", it's really hard to know how much protein to eat, and which foods may cause you difficulty.
I have recommended these two books to several friends and family, and those who follow them are doing very well. The key is to find out what works for you, and we are not all alike. That's what makes these two books so very helpful. I actually made this purchase to replace a book that I gave to my step-daughter. She is just beginning the Baby Boomer Diet.
It has been two years, and I am finding that the more I refine the way we eat, the better we do. I also find that we have a lot more tolerance for foods that are not ideal for us, as long as we don't overindulge. I'm not talking about "bad" foods, like sugar or other refined foods. I'm talking about foods that don't work for us (everyone is different), like wheat. I used to turn beet red in the face and break out all over my cheeks if I ate wheat, and my husband would have horrible gas. Now, we can eat it sometimes, but we do avoid it. I AM NOT SAYING YOU CANNOT EAT WHEAT. THE WHOLE PRINCIPLE OF THESE TWO BOOKS IS YOUR INDIVIDUALITY. But, that's the beauty of The Baby Boomer Diet, and The GenoType diet.
I am just a person, trying to find answers for myself and my husband. I read a lot, but I do not consider myself to be an expert at anything. I am just grateful that I have found answers for us, and I wanted to share my thoughts with others. I know that finding answers is not always easy, it wasn't for us. It was a journey, and it still is. I expect things will always be changing, but I also believe that this diet is going to be a permanent way of life for us. Science is always discovering new things, and I do like to read all the new studies, etc. But, I always temper new information against what I know to work for us, and against what has worked historically for humans.
I highly recommend you read this book, and the Bloodtype and GenoType diet, books, by Peter D'Adamo.
