We got this as a birthday present, and it was an instant hit with my 5 yrs old daughter!
The kit contains 5 test tubes, made of unbreakable plastic, each contains materials and detailed instruction for each experiment.
There is one test tube where you mix dyed water and oil, to make a lava lamp, and learn about hydrophobic and hydrophobic materials. to the more grown and advanced kids you can introduce the concept of atoms and molecules, and the connection between it. Also there were 3 more tubes containing polymers, one contained tiny tiny marbles ( the size of a poppy seed) that after a few hours soaked in water, soaked the liquid to become beautiful colorful jelly like marbles, the size of a grape. My kids just loved those, and had a great time playing with them in the bath tub. Another one contained tiny crystals, that are also a polymer, designed to soak up water. The same polymer that is used for diapers. We cut a diaper, took some of the stuff out, soaked it in a cup of water and lo and behold the cup was filled with jello like substance!
The science of it was somewhat over the head of my daughter, but she was more than captivated with each project, and had a great time pouring, mixing, and watching the results. I would definitely recommend this kit, since it was fun, educational, and not too messy or dangerous. I guess it would Probably be more appropriate for ages 8-12, but if your child is inquisitive, and has the patience to listen and observe he/she will enjoy and learn from it even at a younger age.
What is required from the grown up/ child is to read the instructions, and do some mixing, usually with water. There is nothing there a child of 7-8 years will have any trouble doing on his or hers own. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that a measuring spoon was missing. I can only be like 90 percent sure that it wasn't in the kit, and not just misplaced by my kids, so maybe I am wrong. Other than that, we have gotten quite a few hours of fun out of it, and I consider it to be one of the best birthday gifts we ever received.I bought this for my 8 year old son. The test tubes seem to be unbreakable plastic which is important for kids. The holder could be a little better, as it's a bit flimsy. The experiments were simple enough that he could do it on him own with instruction and just a bit of support pouring liquids. Some of the supplies come with the kit and others are things that you most likely have at home plastic cups for mixing, vegetable oil, water, etc. It's not very messy to do any of it, and the results are extremely cool! My son will be keeping the lava lamp test tube for his mad scientist costume for Halloween. The kit comes with suggestions for what to use the test tubes for if you've done all the experiments, so it truly is reusable. I thought this kit was a really good value for the amount of fun and learning that comes out of it. We'd recommend it and will be buying another variation ourselves!
