This is a great first musical instrument. Since it has metal pipes for the notes, the notes are quite accurate. It does require supervision with a small child since the mallets are plastic with small heads and thin handles. A little one might be able to chew through and choke on the mallet head. Also, the metal tubes could be sharp on the ends. I viewed this as secondary to the fine quality of the xylophone and the great price. It is a rhythm band instrument and therefore really made for school age children.

I teach music to preschool age children and I have two of these xylopipes. Each one broke the very first day of use. The long yellow pieces of plastic covering the pipes came apart almost immediately. Now one of the red pipes has broken free. I have an extensive range of instruments that I use with my children and these were the only one's I've had problems with.

I absolutely loved this little xylophone. I thought it was such an excellent toy instrument. Some of the toy instruments that are sold have horrible sound (tinny) and this xylophone makes a beautiful, enchanting sound. That's why, even as an adult, I found myself drawn to playing with it.

We never had any issues with quality, with any parts breaking. The tubes were designed to be interchangeable. They rested on a little piece of foam, I think, and you could switch the order if you wanted. I'm not even sure it had those plastic bars holding the tubes/pipes in place. (Another reviewer mentioned that the bars broke off easily.)

Bottom line: If this company still makes the quality product it did years ago, I highly recommend this for any young child.
