Use of 1% tolerance resistors in this price range was a good feature.

I tested all values at the 100 ohm baseline and I found all values with the exception

of 1-10 ohms were close enough to 1% tolerance for all practical intentions, using a 6.5

resolution digital meter.

I wouldnt expect a box tn this price range to meet that tight tolerance up

against a six and half digit test meter at the lower values.

Like others pointed out the switch position is difficult to determine and switches are of low quality

but expected for the price.

I removed the switch cover, and painted the lower halves of the switches with flat white

lacquer. When the switch is at its upper position the white indicator appears at the bottom half

of the switch.

Over time the paint is wearing off from friction when

operating the switches but for now was a simple improvement.

The case and stand are very lightweight and careful handling of the stand is necessary.

Overall good value for hobbyists, you cant get a better deal having 1% tolerances.

This one gets a fair amount of usage and I have had no problems with its simplistic design,

you just have to realize this isnt a substitute for an IET quality box or others costing a couple

of hundred dollars or more.It serves the needs of 5-15 volt DC projects very well for the student

or hobbyist.

What I liked:

Priced for hobbyists on a budget.

1%, 1 Watt resistors.

7-decade range, with 1-Ohm steps.

Uses binding posts instead of permanently-wired alligator clips.

Didn't like so much:

Alignment of some switches is uneven; hard to tell if those switches are on or off.

Would make more sense to me to have the highest power of ten on the left side, and the smallest on the right you know, like the decimal system... Inexplicably, they are the other way around.

Hard to see at a glance what value is set, but after seeing what the boxes with rotary switches go for, I can live with it for occasional use.

I purchased 10 of the RS500 for a test setup. Out of these one had a bad internal solder joint (easily fixed). Given the price, they otherwise work acceptably. One should note that although the range starts at 1 ohm, there is a basic resistance of 0.2-0.5 ohm which varies making the accuracy of the low ohm resistors less then advertised.

It also should be noted that the alignment of the plastic and the switches is poor in some places leading to some difficulty in being able to quickly look at the switches and verify their on/off condition.

All that said, the substitution box served well with a bit of care in its use and an understanding of its limits.

Honest reviews on Elenco 1% 1 Watt Resistor Substitution Box

I wanted to test once and for all the accuracy of my dash gauges in my 1983 Trans Am. The gauges are notoriously inaccurate but how does knowing that help me? It doesn't.

With this device and using a reference chart I was able to exactly determine how "off" the gauges were OR more importantly if my sensors were bad. Most gauges work on resistance measurements. For example in one Corvette application COLD/75 degrees should read 569 ohms, WARM/180 degrees should read 123 ohms and HOT/211 degress should read 83 ohms. The gauges read ohms from the sensor. The hotter the sensor becomes the lower the resistance (ohms) and the gauge moves accordingly.

Anyway with your specific refence chart in hand for your vehicle you just set the resistor box to the exact resistance (ohms) and run wires to your gauges instead of from the sensor and the gauge should jump to an exact known value. If the gauge is accurate then you can test against your sensor to see if your sensors are faulty.

If your gauges are not accurate then you'll know by eaxtly how much they are "off" like I have to add 10 degrees to temp or 5 psi to oil or whether you should just buy new gauges.

I love this device!

The only way to rate it any higher is to make some part of it out of metal. It is cheaply made, but works. What else can I say?
