This is the second time I've used this kit... my first time was for a birthday party of 5 year olds who absolutely loved it. The second go around was with a pack of cub scouts -ages ranged from 5 to 8. Again, it was a real hit. The nice thing is that the 5 year olds just have fun with it, maybe they get some idea of the science, maybe not, but the 8 year olds get the same level of enjoyment and are more interested in learning a little about how it works (they enjoyed competing to find the best ratio of baking soda to vinegar, etc.) All around, it's a really fun kit and worthwhile regardless of age.
