It's not huge, but it's pretty cool. The lights are nice; they vary from white to blue to red and seem random. As the pellets fall, they are recirculated through the volcano at different rates, so the eruption seems to ebb and flow. Pretty neat. And the volcano produces tiny bubbles which look like smoke, visible mainly when room lights are dim.
Mine worked perfectly out of the box, but I'd suggest two things: first, the instructions recommend soaking the balls for at least six hours before running the volcano. I just let it sit overnight. Second, add a drop of dishwashing detergent, as instructed. Just a tiny bit. I initially tried just using filtered water, but the pellets didn't sink well. They sank immediately when I added a drop of soap.
So there you go, a cool looking and fun toy, a nice little Mount Doom for our upcoming LOTR party!

This is a fascinate item. Everybody loved it, young and old. But, it lasted less than 10 hours total running time, at 15-30 minutes per day, before it quit working. The impeller quit turning (shaft slipping) and so no more volcano.

I got this for my son for Christmas and he loves it, I wouldn't put all the beads in like it says so that its doesn't jam. I had to take some out because my son set it up without waiting for help. I would recommend this item.
