About 2 years ago when my youngest son (now 9) became interested in prehistoric beasts, we were dinner guests at a house that had several of the Safari brand of dinosaur toys. Though my son played with them intensely, I was fascinated by their weight, detail, color and information (embossed on their bellies).
Since then we've acquired many dinos of our own, and any from the Safari Carnegie Collection are always a celebrated find, especially when the price is right! We've found many at thrift stores, but have occasionally purchased a brand new one on special occasions like Christmas, birthday or as a souvenier from a dino destination. This new Apatosaurus did not disappoint.
Because of my boy's interest, I have learned more about pre-historic times than I ever knew or was interested in when I was a boy. My son is perhaps too young to appreciate this, but as an adult, the only other feature I wish the Safari company had added to the belly of each figure was their scale.

My son loves his "apato"! He selected it at the store, where it shared shelf space with similar dinosaurs made by Schleich. I preferred the muted colors of the Schleich dinos, however my son was drawn to this one by Safari, which has nice rich colors. He frequently takes it into his bed to cuddle with at night despite it being a heavy piece of plastic. After buying it, I was excited to learn about how this model is based on the fossil at the Carnegie Collection. My only complaint about it is that the painting done on the face is a little bit sloppy. It seems like the eyes and teeth could have been painted with a smaller brush. But my son doesn't seem to mind, so I can't complain about it. Of all our various plastic animals (most from Schleich) this apatosaurus is the only one that regularly gets played with.
