My children and I were so excited when the UPS guy came to our house to deliver this toy. We immediately opened up the box, and planned to start learning and playing with this toy. However, as soon as we cracked the lid on this toy, a horrible noxious smell overwhelmed us. It was at that moment that the thought first crept into my mind that I had made a mistake. Perhaps I should have listened to that other reviewer....
However, we were so excited and optimistic that we all tried to ignore the smell. We took the pieces out of the container and tried to start using the pieces to build some designs. However, the smell was so horrible and so strong that our heads started to ache and our eyes started to water. (The smell was that bad and that strong!) I immediately put the pieces back into the container and had the kids wash their hands and get some fresh air. Again, I don't know anything about toy manufacturing....but based on the smell of these toys alone, I am pretty certain that there was something pretty nasty and toxic used to manufacture them. I just hope that the small amount of exposure that my kids had with the product wasn't enough to cause any lasting damage. I retuned the package to amazon, and I plan to order another type of magnetic pattern blocks. (Amazon was great about the return by the way.)
I know that some people who purchased this toy did not have a problem with a bad smell. (The smell was bad enough that they would have definelty noticed and mentioned it in their review I am sure!) SO--I can only guess that there were perhaps several "batches" of these pattern blocks floating around from different manufacturing plants in China. I must have gotten the batch filled with the stinky toxic stuff I guess. Who knows? All I know is that I felt compelled to come on here and write a review warning other people to listen to that first reviewer...and order a different product!!
Long story short..learn from my mistake.

These are worth the price because of their quality. We recently purchased a magnetic board that hangs on the wall for my children, the other letters and numbers that we had didn't stick because they had such a small amount of magnet. These letters/numbers/shapes have a magnet covering the full surface of each. They stick to the board that is hanging on the wall, we play with them almost every day! These are more expensive than ones found in dollar stores/dollar sections of stores, but their quality is well worth the price. I printed off templates to build shapes and patterns with these and then laminated the sheets for extra entertainment and educational value. We love them!Best Deals for Foam Magnets - Pattern Blocks
I love the variety of shapes that come in the bucket. Many weren't fully cut (like when you get a pizza and they didn't cut the pieces all the way), but they came apart fine. I can see my two-year-old being hard on them (yes, I'm watching they don't make it into his mouth) but for what I paid, that's just fine. They are easy to pull off of a magnetic surface, and there are a lot of them. I can barely stuff them back into the container. Good buy.Honest reviews on Foam Magnets - Pattern Blocks
High density, smooth foam. Bright colors. Crisp die cut edges. Solid magnets. Fun toy on the refrigerator door. When you're done, it all goes back in the jar with a little shaking. Amazing how much the kids like these.Caution, small parts that could be swallowed!

The initial small of these blocks is overpowering, more than likely from the manufacturing of the foam. I had to let them air out for three weeks and there is still a smell. However, now that some of it has had a chance to wear off, we've had a chance to play with them. We had to initially bend back and forth a few of the pieces to separate them from each other. Once the pieces are removed and separated, the container was too small to put them back in and close the lid. They overflowed from the container a good 2". We resorted to using a plastic bag for storage. (See picture added above)They are made with a spongy type foam that is easily imprinted with a fingernail. You will need to be somewhat gentle with them if you want them to last for a second child to play with.
The magnet is strong enough to hold onto a magnetic board or refrigerator without slipping off or moving when the board is turned upside down. They will hold their position.
The pieces are cut straight and fit together nicely, without any gaps. They also go nicely with the pattern cards also sold on Amazon. We bought Pattern Cards for Pattern Blocks Set Activity Cards (See second picture added above)
These pattern blocks are good in design, but need better implementation.
