These sensors are really useful and getting started with them is so easy and straightforward. Grove has a dedicated wiki with example code to immediately make use of your sensors. 5 minutes and I was able to gather data from all of the sensors on a serial port.

I purchased this sensor kit because I just purchased an Arduino and wanted to get start playing with sensors right away. I thought I would like the idea of using a shield to wire up the sensors, but it adds a layer of abstraction to how the Arduino interfaces with sensors and the wiki and tutorials at the vendors site only demonstrates using their library. Since my goal was to learn about how it all worked I did not like that. However you can use jumper wires and hook up the sensors just as you would any other sensor. If you are looking at this kit just for a few sensors I would recommend looking at a site dedicated to selling electronics, you can get photoresistors and thermistors for a couple dollars.
