This soldering station uses the same size cable for the iron as it uses for the wall plug. (18awg 3 conductor with a very stiff round insulation). The cable is larger in diameter and much stiffer than the power cable on my computer. It take an effort to solder because of the weight and stiffness of the cable. The iron is hard wired into the controller so you don't have the option of using any normal soldering iron. The flex drive for my Dremel is more flexible.
Unusable for my needs.

I do much soldering and my original Weller just died. Prices have gone up significantly over the last few years so I decided to give this unit a try. Mine is a Velleman; which is the exact same unit.If you follow the instructions for tip "break in" you should have no issue in the future. The iron maintains its temperature and has plenty of useful range and wattage to do heavier work.
Pros-
Only $20
50 watts allows you to solder lugs and larger inductors.
The tip is small enough to work with smaller pads
The handle is ergonomic and has the feel of the much more expensive iron
The Caddy is solid, you will not accidentally knock it out
Tips are easy to find and are only about $3
The iron is much smaller than a Radio Shack iron, easier to use.
Cons
Takes a bit longer than a Weller to reach temp
The cable is a little stiff at first, but as current starts to flow through it, it relaxes a bit.
Yes, a $150-$200 Weller will run circles around this iron, but for the price it is a great value. I build amplifiers and completed a project with this iron, had absolutely no issues with it.

The broad adjustable temperature range covers the majority of home repairs and electronics construction projects. As with most things in life, however, the addage "you get what you pay for" applies here. In this case, the materials used are low-end and the cords are stiff, making set up and soldering detailed or tight joints a bit cumbersome. Still, while the unit is lightweight and not made from the best materials, it performs quite well. In summary, if your soldering projects are few or occasional only, this is a great value. If you need to do a lot of soldering, however, I recommend purchasing something considerably more upscale.Honest reviews on Elenco Soldering Station
Keeping in mind how little your paying for this solder iron, it's not a bad little tool.Heats quick enough, and lets you get into tighter spots than a solder gun. Only thing that might be an issue ,is replacement tips. These tips are nothing like the standard Weller tips and could pose a problem down the road, but, i have not researched new tip supply, so it might not be a big deal to find them.. If you don't need a production line iron, just one for the handy home owner, then it will do great..
