When a child is ready to learn the written letters & numerals, Montessori sandpaper letters and numerals are the best material to use. The child traces the figure with the first two fingers while looking at it and saying its name. This gives tactile, visual, and auditory input, which really gets the information into long term memory. You can always try making your own, but you will ruin scissors and risk losing your sanity. These are beautiful, and you can sell them when your child is finished with them and get at least half your money back. Review of Montessori Sandpaper Numbers w/ Box
I think the sandpaper numbers are wonderful but for one thing. The number nine looks like an upside-down six rather than the circle and line that it should look like and that was shown in the online picture. The chidren are very interested in the numbers and are constantly tracing them with their fingers and naming them, but they are always confused by the six and nine because of this variation from what was shown in the online picture.
