My oldest is in pre-K. I'm not a homeschooling mom, but I really don't have a lot of faith that public schools will teach my children what I want them to know. What do I do? I send my child to school for social enrichment and so that he can experience things like storytime, recess, and the structure that being in a classroom teaches. Then I supplement at home.

Having a background in early childhood education has taught me to keep my eyes open for things I can use to teach my kids at home. I was recently contacted by Learning Resources about reviewing some of their new for 2012 products. I chose the Primary Science Mixture and Measure Set. I thought it looked like it would be fun for my oldest to play with. We could surely come up with some great science experiments to conduct with this. Little did I know when I ordered it the multitude of concepts I'll be able to teach my boys with this set.

The Primary Science Mixture and Measure set includes:

Scale

bowl

3 self-standing spoons

6 unique cup designs help young learners visualize equivalent quantities in different formats

Activity Cards introduce children to measurement and guide them in making mystery goo, puffy paint, slime and more!

We did our first lesson on weight. We measured out equal amounts of water, dried beans, and cheerios and weighed them individually. Before weighing them I'd have Big Brother guess if he thought the item we were weighing weighed more, less, or the same as the item(s) previously weighed. It was really quite a simple lesson, but he had tons of fun and he learned a bit about: weight, estimation, greater than, less than, equal to, and volume.

Other skills that can be taught with the Mixture and Measure set include, but are not limited to: counting, measuring, conservation, addition, fractions, subtraction, cause and effect (as you teach various science, cooking, etc., projects).

I couldn't be more pleased with the Primary Science Mixture and Measure Set. I love the activity cards it come with-they'll be a big help on those days when I just plain lack creativity. The set is also made with kids in mind and is quite durable.

The Primary Science Mix and Measure Set from Learning Resources contains a scale, a large bowl with a lid, 3 measuring spoons, 4 measuring cups, 2 liquid measuring cups, and 10 scientific activity cards. The set itself is very colorful making it enticing to children and the tools are shaped in a way that are perfect for little hands. The activity cards are a great way to get you and your child started in learning fun scientific things though you aren't limited to just that. Some of the activity cards you can find in this set include recipes for puff paint, slime, clay, bubbles, and more!

My daughter whom is nearly four year old really enjoyed using this set. I gave her the opportunity to play with it freely and explained to her what the names for the pieces included were. And then we opted to scientifically create and explore Mystery Goo and what fun that had been. She got to investigate and discover that when she put her had slowly into the mixture that it was all smooth but if she tried to pull her hand out quickly or punch the goo her hand would get stuck! She's been very eager since playing and learning with this set to explore the world of science again.

We really enjoy using the Primary Science Mix and Measure Set and are looking forward to trying more of the suggested projects found on the included activity cards. The only thing I wish was included in this set would be an apron or two because science can get a bit messy and maybe a little booklet in basic terms that mentions what exactly is going on with each of the projects included in scientific terms. Overall a great product and we highly recommend it!

The Primary Science Mix & Measure Kit is full of five cups, three measuring spoons, a bowl with lid, a scale and ten activity cards. The first thing I did was set up all the items on the bathroom counter (luckily we have the room) and let my boys play on their own. I wanted them to be comfortable using the cups and seeing how much water goes in them. They had so much fun doing this and it was actually nice for them not to use my measuring cups! The cups and spoons in this set are also very kid-friendly and easy to hold. I am thinking too these will be fun when we can outside and not worry about messes!

So now your probably thinking, "Okay they are playing with measuring cups, now what?" Well the set includes ten activity cards that give parents all sorts of ideas to get kids thinking, learning and having fun! The cards have activities such as having kids fill them up to see how two containers of different shapes can hold the same amount, how a whole can be made, and understanding the weight of different objects. My favorite though is the recipe cards as I am so not crafty! There are cards for Mystery Goo, Bubbles, Puffy Paint, Trail Mix, Three-Day Clay and Slime Stencils!

Overall, this set includes not only the tools you need but also the ideas for activities. I do wish though the scale that it included had numbers on it instead of colors, so it was more like a real scale. The cups though are all high quality plastic and definitely standing up to the roughness my boys have been putting them through.

Honest reviews on Learning Resources Primary Science Mix and Measure Set

Bought this for my 3 1/2 year old. This is a good basic set. The activities included are a little to simple in my opinion, but we use the set for other things and she is very excited to have her own measuring set. Recently we have used it in conjunction with the "Mind Blowing Science" kit she got for the extra materials like flour and water needed for her experiments. Well made. great sizes and very sturdy for little hands. Definitely a good buy. I wish the scale used both color and numbers instead of just color; more like a true scale. The website for this product has additional and more interesting cards you can download.

My boys and I had a really great time with this set. It comes with a variety of sizes measuring cups and spoons, as well as a bowl. It's colorful and chunky, easier for little hands to hold and maneuver. My favorite part of the kit was the recipe cards that help kids create all kinds of fun things like mystery goo, trail mix, and more. It's something tangible they can touch and feel and work with, learning both visually and hands-on. Awesome set.
