My 7 year old daughter REALLY wanted a diary with a lock. We first tried another model with one of the cheaper built-in latch locks, and that was a disaster -it wouldn't work, she couldn't do it herself, etc. We returned it and went for this model, which has a cute little stand-alone lock that feeds through rings mounted on the book. The lock is not of the highest quality, and it would help if the shaft were longer -but she can open and close it herself, and it seems like it will survive for awhile, so we're happy. If the lock breaks, we can easily substitute a small luggage lock.

This is such a sweet diary. It's pages are perfect for a young girl to write about her day to day adventures. My godchild loves it!!

My grand daughter wanted one for her writing and drawing, she loved it. I have not checked with her to see about the sturdiness of the lock, however. That's why I gave it a 4.
