I love the ChipKit product line, I have been involved with Microchip PIC MCU's for 10 years and recently jumped into classic Arduino on Atmels. The Digilent ChipKit Arduino compatible boards are the perfect marriage of speed and compatibility with Arduino and allow one to keep the PIC heritage. The PIC32 MCU is based on a classic MIPS architecture and therefore fairy easy to learn. The Protoshield will make a great add on and development board/shield. Good price and value.

The board is everything you want it to be with the exception that the header pins are paper-thin. Still works fine, not a deal breaker. Through-hole and well laid out.
