My son loves this. He calls it his little computer. He loved the software that came pre loaded and the Handy Manny software that we bought to go with it. He also loves that I loaded a bunch of pictues of family and friends that he can look at and play with. I have not yet tried to load music but you can.

The only drawback that I can think of is that you have to load the games on your computer and transfer them to the ixl. Not too bad, just thought I was getting a "cartridge" or something that he could change out himself.

I would also recommend getting some kind of bag or carrying case to take it along with you. I am looking for one to "protect" it.

We wanted something fun but educational for our boys of 5 and 2, we bought the leapster 2 but took it back to the shop as it wasn't durable enough and it didn't actually do what we wanted, At the time my parents were visiting relatives in the U.S and we were browsing the net one evening, came across the IXL and thought wow! we want those, but could we get them here in the U.K? No! so luckily enough we ordered 2 from Amazon and my parents fetched them back for us, I think the onbly issue we will have are some of the spelling, but I am so excited to see my boys faces this Xmas, it certainly will be a pressie with a difference as we don't have them here, very unique to us, love the fact it has 6 varieties of things to it too!

I bought this for my youngest son's 4th bday. It was an instant hit! Took it out of the box beforehand and loaded some photos and favorite songs I had downloaded from amazon. We do not even have any of the software titles and he still loves to play with this. He has a lot of fun drawing on the pics of his brothers and playing music like his own ipod. Very easy to load the songs and photos onto his iXL. His older brothers (6 and 7.5) have been asking to play with it too.

I highly recommend this toy for the 3-5 age group. Bought it from amazon w/2 day prime and received it next day!

My son opened this Christmas eve and by noon on the day after it quit functioning. It also goes through batteries fairly quickly. My son loved it but I cannot believe it only lasted 2 days. Then, I couldn't exchange it on Amazon. They said that no others were available but that was wrong. There were others available, just $40.00 more than I spent on it.

How it stopped workingI had it connected to my Mac to add some pictures to it. While syncing it told me error and to restart it. However, it would not restart. It was locked. So I took out the batteries and put them in. I started it up. It went to the Fisher-Price screen and that's it. No further. I decided to use the reset button the back. After that it wouldn't even get to the Fisher-Price screen. Just completely blank.

I got this for my four year old daughter, it was not worth the price or the hassle. The original device I purchased was shoddy and never turned on properly. Fisher-Price is well aware of this problem, its even documented in other reviews here and is not all that uncommon I suspect. They did replace the defective device, but I had to pay the shipping and handling.

When I got the new device, it did turn on properly. However, the software that allows you to transfer information and new games to the device is also shoddy. It commonly crashes and I've been forced to call customer support yet again. My expectation is that this is simply not worth the asking price considering the problems I have had and the unreliability of the device.
