The other issue is that the board is made up of 2 separate pieces. A top piece is the calendar and the bottom piece is just like the calendar but with no writing...it's just blank to hold all the extra magnets. I wish it was the other way because the calendar is a little too high up for my child to see it great but if it were down any lower, my younger son would be able to grab the pieces off and get them in his mouth.
The idea is great. The pieces are cute. I just wish these issues had been addressed.

We love the Melissa and Doug puzzles, so when my 4 year old daughter received the calendar for X-Mas, we were thrilled. We do "Calendar" every day. We bought this one for another little 4 year old as well. My only suggestion, put the calendar in a place that your child cannot reach it without help. There are ALOT of pieces that you don't want to lose.Best Deals for Melissa & Doug Deluxe Magnetic Calendar
I bought this item for my adult special needs daughter and she loves it. There are a few drawbacks, as other reviewers have said.1. The spaces are too small (or the tiles are too big) to be able to fit more than one on any give day. We've begun putting all the weather related tiles at the top by the month and just changing them daily. That way they don't take up space in the calendar itself.
2. We, too, wish that the makers of this calendar would make blank tiles available for purchase for more customizing. I contacted the company and was basically told that if I want more or replacement tiles, just buy another calendar. Well, we found a way around that. I bought some 1-inch square wooden tiles from Casey Wood Products online for about 7 or 8 cents each, depending on how many you buy. Then I bought some 4x6 inch self-stick magnetic sheets here on Amazon. I made over 100 new tiles for my daughter, detailing all the many activities she's involved in, other holidays that are not included in the set, other special days and fun things like Full Moon, Meteor Shower, Trash Day, etc. I also include other "weather related" tiles such as "Gloomy Day, Thunderstorm, Hot Day, Cold Day, etc. I printed them on full sheet labels, also available here on Amazon, and assembled them.
3. We wanted some extra blank tiles and needed to replace a couple of the round date tiles. I purchased a dry-erase self-stick sheet here on Amazon. I found that my 5/8-inch round paper punch worked wondefully. I just punched a few circles out of the magnet material and out of the dry-erase sheet and put them together. I also made several extra blank square tiles using the dry-erase sheet. Since not all the tiles will fit on the board, I made her a small cloth drawstring bag to keep them in. It worked perfectly.
Altogether this is a wonderful item and my daughter loves it. It's very useful for helping her understand how many days are left until some special event. With a little ingenuity and customization, it suits her needs well.
If anyone woutd like some of the graphics I designed for her special days, I can make them available.
Honest reviews on Melissa & Doug Deluxe Magnetic Calendar
Good product, typical M&D product which is my favorite choice for my children. The magnets are nice and I'm trying to figure out how to get more of the same (for example weekly music lessons). The squares are also pretty small so if two occasions were on the same day (first day of spring and your child's birthday) you would have to be creative. Magnets for parents and siblings should be included rather than obscure holidays. My 4 year old loves it and is quickly learning the concepts of a calendar. No complaints here...
