When my granddaughter first saw this kit she was excited. At 6 years old, she thought the "purple rock" was cute, and couldn't wait to get her hands on the magnifying glass.

Once we opened the kit, I realized that the plaster was too hard for her to dig through with her tiny hands, and she sat next to her Mom and I as we chipped away at the plaster. She enjoyed watching the progress, chipping a little bit herself, and even using the brush to brush it off. She had to look at everything with the magnifying glass, and was especially intrigued once we got the rocks free.

The only problem we encountered was anticipating that the amethyst would be the same size as the other stones (it is much smaller). I actually took all of the remaining pieces (I thought), and dissolved them in water. Nothing. It was my daughter who discovered the amethyst in one of the small purple pieces my granddaughter had been examining.

If you don't have the patience to dig out the stones, the plaster enclosure does dissolve in water, something I knew from earlier experiences with these kits, and which came in handy when we couldn't find the amethyst.

A fun adventure, followed by an excellent memory with the stones. Good books, mostly aimed at an older audience than 6 years old. But at age 6, she is now exploring the whole world with the magnifier her comment "It makes things bigger."

We've done a few of the Dr. Cool dig kits. Of all of them, this was probably the most satisfying. My daughter knew what to expect from experience. It involves digging in plaster, which can get messy. I recommend it be done outside on newspaper.

Inside the plaster rock, my daughter found amethyst, quartz crystal, and tiger's eye. It didn't take too long. The quartz crystal and tiger's eye were substantial enough to make her feel like she really found something. The digging time was just about right. She had to work for it, but not so long that her patience wore thin.

My daughter found the rocks fascinating, especially after we read the guide book. We learned what constitutes a gemstone, a little about the gemstones found in the kit, and what the difference between a precious gem and semi-precious gem. Did you know a semi-precious gem could be worth more than a precious gem?

My daughter is very happy with her new collection of gemstones, especially the amethyst and tiger's eye. The tiger's eye is polished and a thing of beauty. All of them were worth saving. She keeps them in her room on the shelf.

This Gemstone Dig Kit is a lot of fun for kids to "dig" through to uncover the three gemstones encased in the cleverly cast plaster that was made to look like an amethyst crystal. We enjoy science related sets we can do as a family activity and this is definitely a fun and educational kit that delivers for younger kids.

The set is nicely packaged and includes a glossy gemstone guide, activity book, plastic magnifying glass, metal digging tool, brush, and an Amethyst, Tigers Eye, and Quartz Crystal encased in a cool looking plaster "Gemstone". This is geared for 6 and up and that seems appropriate, with some adult help possibly needed.

This took about 15-minutes or so for our 10 year old to free all three stones (see video). The stones were a good size and nice quality, and the glossy guide had good information about each one. The included magnifying glass was a nice touch and made examining the stones fun.

Once the stones are released and cleaned, this set is leaves you with the three stones, glossy gemstone guide, and the small tools, so it does have value beyond the main activity of digging the stones out.

Highly Recommended!

Honest reviews on Gemstone Dig Kit - Excavate Real Rocks and Minerals!

I bought this kit for my granddaughter, who is 8, and leaves rocks randomly all over her bedroom floor. Her mother keeps tripping over them. Dr. Cool to the rescue! Funny I gave her MORE rocks, but digging for these gems might just encourage my granddaughter to at least organize the gemstones and rocks into a collection (identify by name, type, hardness, etc.). I had the kit delivered to me, first, so I would know exactly what she would get. The kit is very neatly and attractively packaged. The "tools" are small and somewhat cheap-looking to an adult, but a child would care more about whether they will work, and could probably invent more digging tools, like a stick, an old spoon, etc. The small booklets that come with it are almost hidden in the back of the box, but they are surprisingly both educational and fun, with colorful illustrations, good writing with plenty of gemstone facts, and a variety of simple gemstone learning games. The only minuses would be generated by the child, I think: my granddaughter might not have the patience to keep digging after 5-10 minutes, and she might lose the small gemstones easily. But I think she will be excited by the prospect[ing!], and will love reading the booklets. Looks to me like a gem of a little gift.

Hours of fun and learning! It's great to see the kids squeal with excitement! The "treasures" inside were surprisingly large for the price of the kit.
