My friend's son recently turned 7, i was therefore in the market for a kids gift. I prefer one's with some kind of educational aspect. After meeting with much success with the Premium kit (mid-level kit) I came back to littleBits for my next kiddo gift.

The Basic kit has fewer bits than the Premium, and is 1/3 cheaper because of it. that said, there looks to be plenty in this kit to get a young engineer started. My friend's kid had in no time created a joy buzzer and proceeded to shake everyone's hands he could manage with it. His mother had not witnessed the devices creation so was an early victim.

My friend appreciated what I had got his son, and I believe will keep him well stocked with bits and projects in which to enable via the bits. I mentioned this in my Premium Kit review, but the real value in this product is in all the crafting the kids can do, then use the bits to bring them to life. LittleBit's website has hundreds of fan submitted projects which kids can research and create. One impressive one i saw was where two young boys had created a basketball dunking robot out of craft paper and littleBits. Whenever the robot made a basket, the crowd lit up and "cheered" via a buzzer. Very clever.

Whether or not your child likes science, they'll probably enjoy this toy. The various parts snap together easily and intuitively in countless combinations, bringing instant gratification and accomplishment. Dig, or rather snap, further, and the combinations begin to reveal the nature of energy, process, system, and cause and effect. Those more crafty out there can easily combine their combinations with boxes and whatnot to create inventions of their own. Really, a brilliant contemporary to the wire and spring electronics kits from our childhood.

This set is awesome! We love things like Legos where you build and create and have an educational element. This is arguable more fun because you get to build creatively and craft (design the the items that go around the electrical piece). We built the doorbell with my 6 year old and two neighbors (ages 8 and 11). It was very easy to follow the instructions and kids caught on quickly to how things worked. I just had to help with the box cutters for building the box housing. There are so many possibilities and could already see the wheels turning on the older kids for what they could create next. My only wish is the magnets that hold the pieces together were a bit stronger. They come apart fairly easily until they're taped down to something. My neighbor is already asking where to get these for her kids for Christmas because they had so much fun. I only wish my electrical engineering classes had been this easy!
