I looked around online for a microphone for my 3 year old, and this one had good reviews, so I looked it up on Toysrus.com and found that it was in stock in the store. I just went and bought it there instead of paying shipping. Its a great toy microphone: it switches on and has a high or low volume option (but they both sound similar), the general volume is fine, not too loud, and not too soft, the applause button is great fun, the cool rhythms button gets used a lot. There are about 7 or 8 songs that play, with no words, just some 80s sounding beats and rock music type melodies. It has an off switch. You can just talk or sing into it without any music playing, or you can play the music and make up lyrics and sing along. There is a speaker on the bottom and thats where the sound comes out. I love that the top is like a real microphone, not just a plastic dome with a hole in it. It is like a real professional metal microphone top, and the band around the metal mesh is plastic. For 12.99, great buy.

I recently went to a 3 year old's birthday party. She had requested a microphone, and she received several. However, this one is her favorite as it is easy to hold for little hands, and the microphone really works. She loves the tunes it comes with as she dances to most of the tunes. The only thing that would make this better would be an auto-shutoff after 10 minutes of no usage. The 3 year old has learned how to turn it off regularly now.
