Perfect buy for my 2 year old son. He loves speeding around with this car all around our house. He sings along with the songs and really likes to fix speedy when he breaks down with the drivers that are a wrench and a screwdriver. The hood popped off but luckily it just snaps right back in. Cool. Love a durable toy.

I decided to get LeapFrog's Fix & Learn Speedy for my son's first birthday out of a semi-selfish desire to foster a love of the mechanical in him. I was thrilled to see all the parts on Speedy, & the interaction between the car & little mechanic. If only real cars had big smiles & would cheerfully announce what the heck is wrong with them!

Although his birthday is a little over a month away, when Speedy arrived I gave him a test drive with my son to see if he enjoyed him. He is younger than the recommended 18 months, so didn't do much more than chew on the screwdriver & watch Mommy work all the parts & push Speedy around a bit. But, he enjoyed that much, so I declare it a hit! I was surprised that Speedy is quite a sizable toy, around a foot long & five inches or so tall. He feels quite sturdy & ready to crash a bit. I was concerned the hood would be flimsy, but the hinges are reassuringly weighty & pose no pinching threat. I'm sure he can be slung around by the hood without it coming apart. There are no stickers to be rubbed off either. Once again, LeapFrog has very kindly included a volume/on/off switch, which is a must in this day & age of noisy toys. And, although its located on the side of the toy (why don't they put them out of sight?), it does not stick out so much that a young child will immediately figure out what it does, or worse, assume its part of the fun!

Speedy has a lot of parts to fix with the two included tools, a screwdriver & wrench (which double as racers when in the seat). When you lift or lower the hood he states 'open', & 'close'. He has three modes of play with the hood closed, he races around with your little one's help, his buttons activate fun sounds & he sings songs. At the end, a clattering noise plays & Speedy gives your kid the alert that something needs fixed. This is great, as it re-enforces the fact that cars are constantly breaking down (it leaves out the money sink aspect, however)! In the open hood mode, kids can fiddle with the many parts more directly, with encouragement from Speedy & identifying shapes & parts, with some fun phrases. The third mode is to press his license plate for a few songs about counting, a jazzy alphabet song & phrases.

Speedy's educational value is a little minimal, to be less than glowing. The main focus is on shapes (ie, 'turn my hexagon bolt!' & a little on color ('turn an orange wheel'). The alphabet & counting song are great, but not likely to be played since you have to press the license plate, which isn't exactly visible compared to all the neat parts. A better option might be to have a sensor where the tools/drivers sit. Also, as another reviewer pointed out, some of the parts don't apply to a new car, or just don't make sense. One gripe of mine, is a phrase 'righty tighty, lefty loosey!' that plays when you turn the hexagon bolt. This would be great to teach left & right (a difficult concept for many kids), if it were used in context. But, its said no matter what direction you turn it. And, my most minor gripe the dipstick doesn't do much besides make a funny noise, unless Speedy directs you to fix it. I almost thought it arrived broken, before conceding that its just one of the not-so-interactive parts.

Overall, I really like Speedy. He's a unique toy in educational toys, even if his parts aren't true to life of a real car. All his parts are easy to work for little hands, & there's so many ways to play with him, solo or with a friend!

My 2yr old toddler got his finger pinched real hard between the hood and the blue piece next to the engine! Not cool at all. This car is going on the shelf until he is older.

ETA: I've decided to remove the hood to make the toy safer for my son to play with. I will replace it when he is older and more in control of his motor skills.

ETA: Since removing the hood, we've had no other issues with the car. In fact, it's one of my son's (who is 3 yrs old now) favorite toys. So I'm upgrading my rating to 3 stars.

My son received this as a Christmas gift, and it's SO COOL! I'd never seen any toys similar to this one, and I immediately liked the uniqueness. The car will "drive" for awhile (you push it) and talk/sing while it goes. Then after a short bit it will "break" and the child has to listen to and follow instructions as to how to fix it. Awesome! We haven't had it long, so I can't say much about the durability, but it seems to be well-made; doesn't feel chincey or cheap. My 4.5 yr old has no trouble listening to the directions and fixing it quickly. My 2.5 yr old (for whom it was actually a gift) has to try a little harder, but he loves it too and usually does manage to get it right. My boys are relatively advanced, so I'd say the perfect age for this would probably be around 3. Our 15 month old likes the colors, lights, and music, but doesn't try to "fix" it yet of course. Overall, if you have a young boy or girl who is engineering-minded, this toy is a GREAT alternative to all the same-ole, same-ole junk out there. Well worth the money!
