I bought the Leapster (triangle version) for my 4 year old son for his birthday, and he absolutley LOVES it. He also has the V-Smile game system for the TV, and the graphics are so much better with the Leapster. The only reason I gave 3 stars was the system stopped working after about 3 weeks. It would work some of the time, but the touch screen parts of the game began to stop working. I took it back to the local Toys R Us, and got him the rectangle version, after remebering another parent had the same issue. So far, so good. A set of batteries lasted him about 3 weeks, and that was him playing EVERY day. I was able to find the charging system at Walmart for .

I purchaesd the silver Leapster [triangular] one about 3 years ago. My son was younger then and the only problem I had was after about 8 months, the pixels were dead in several sports -he was only 5 so he wasn't exactly gentle with the screen.
I had to ship mine back and received a refund of the s/h as well as getting the brand-new one. Free s/h -It has been well over 2 years and no problems with the new one....
I think that its better for ages 6 and up because they can be gentler...!!
We have all the up-to-date video game systems, etc -including Gameboy -but this one is by far my favorite -it has tons of games and teaches a lot..!! It re-enforces skills they are learning, we well as practicing fine motor skills, in preparation for writing...
This model I think was the best one they came out with -the newer leapster -[not lmax] is smaller -weighs less, but in my opinion is probably cheaper made....
I just purchased another one of this shaped leapsters for my second son.....

We got the Leapster for my 6 year old boy instead of a gameboy.
We are so glad we did. He is learning spelling, letters, and even some math. It's also a must for our trips especially in the car where now he has something to keep him busy! Sturdy, it takes lots of abuse. We got rechargable batteries since they run out quickly...

Santa gave my five year old his Leapster for Christmas in 2005 and I had to purchase one for his sister's three year old birthday as she wanted to have her own. Even thought she was only three there was a lot for her work and play with. Make sure you pay attention to the ages listed on the cartridges so you get the ones that work best for the age of your child(ren). I have most of the Kindergarten and First Grade cartridges and they are well worth the money spent!! Both my kids learn alot from the educational "games". I am very happy with the time they spend on them especially in the car, at the doctor's office, etc. It really keeps their attention when I need to be absolutely sure they are quiet and sitting in one place and they love what they are learning (learning should be underlined as it is much better than those hand held video games that do not teach them anything!). My son loves to sing the vowel song from the Letter Factory cartridge and my daughter enjoys working with Mr. Paint and Mrs. Brush, the princesses and Dora. Highly recommend this item!

the leapster itself was great. My son just turned two and he plays with it for hours. He has thrown it A LOT butit is still holding up well. The only thing is the batteries go FAST so get the charger. Also, when i ordered it the screen cover was broken. I never returned it because i figured he would break it anyway.
