I received one of these for Christmas, I wanted one so I could start growing cacti alongside my 1.5 y/o Joshua trees. Less than 2 weeks after planting my cacti have started to sprout, I'll see how they grow up over time.
As a 48 year old kid (grin), I found it simple to set up & plant. If you do any research about cacti & succulents, you'll know that you need some decent sunlight for them to grow. I have a nice southern facing window at work, so even with the cold of the upper mid-west, there's still enough light for them to sprout.
I didn't plant all of the seeds, roughly 1/2 of each pack of seeds (9 of the 17 cacti, and 11 of the 22 succulents). My plan is to let these grow until spring, transplant them all into new pots, and then use the terrarium to start & grow the remaining seeds. Those I plan on leaving grow inside supplied plastic terrarium. The ones I transplant will go into some unglazed pots (recommended for cacti).
Why am I doing it this way? No reason really, just experimenting. Same as I've done with my Joshua trees, different pots, trimming them differently, water a little differently.. a completely non-scientific experiment to see what works better for growing them. Perhaps one day I'll take whatever I have growing on a road trip to the Mojave & transplant them all there. Until then, it's something to grow at work.

If you follow the instructions this works great. Almost all the seeds sprouted with in about 7-8 days. Very easy to set up. I have tons of little cactus and succulents growing in my little mounds. Make sure you cover the succulents with a couple of stones and press them down lightly and they will sprout as well.
