I've picked up both the ST-TMP and ST-TWOK versions of this phaser from Art Asylum. Both are very similar, but I actually prefer this one. Yes, the "metal" finish of the TWOK version makes it seem a bit more "real" (very nicely done by AA) but in reality you wouldn't want a weapon to have its grip made from bare metal (sweaty hands and all that) and a porous, ceramic finish just makes more sense overall. That's what the TMP design was supposed to be, and as such, it looks quite nice. The additional color is also nice, and I prefer the smooth trigger on the TMP version to the TWOK's "glued on button."
The sound and light effects are the same on both... and since we never saw them used in TMP, this is all taken from TWOK (and a few TNG episodes where the prop got re-used). Overall, this is the best TMP-style phaser prop out there, bar none. My only complaint, really, is with the strip of metalized tape on either side, which isn't particularly impressive (I'd have preferred an actual strip of metal) but it IS a "toy" after all, so that's really just quibbling.
Overall... this phaser (a) makes good design sense, (b) looks really good, and (c) is robust enough and flexible enough to be FUN. What more can you ask for?

The phaser from the first two Star Trek movies has been the one missing from everyone's collection and it has now been released.It is a little light weight, but it does have nice sounds and lights. It has multiple setting; Stun, Kill & Disintegrate and you can set it on overload as well. And while not seen on camera but like the TV version in the original series, you can remove the smaller phaser type 1 from the handle and with all the same FX.
And my personal favorite touch, when you replace the phaser type 1, there are magnets that pull it into place and you get a really nice "lock & load" sound.

I received the TOS MP Phaser on time and couldn't wait to operate it. The lights and sound effects are terrific and add much to the look of the prop. I also liked the "lock n load" sound effect and the firmness of how the T1 and T2 go together. I agree with other reviews that it would be great if the red LED's in the front would light brighter. Great fun!Honest reviews on Star Trek: The Motion Picture Exclusive Phaser Replica
What can I say. This is one of the best prop reproductions I have ever seen from an inexpensive "toy".I highly recommend purchasing one ( or more). The Wrath of Khan phaser is also an excellent reproduction. Diamond Select has done a superb job! I hope they produce a STTMP wrist communicator next.
A+++++++++++++
