Given the better performance of this net, I'd now rate it three stars. I also wouldn't hesitate to order from American Educational again after experiencing their commitment to quality customer service!
(original review follows): We've purchased quite a few insect nets over the past few years for our son. He certainly puts them through a workout, using them to catch everything from butterflies to snakes to frogs. I picked this net for him based on price and for features like the adjustable handle. Unfortunately, this net did not meet even the lowest possible standards. We got the net mid-April, and as of the end of June, the net is broken and completely unusable. The sad part is, my son barely even used this net. He took it on maybe three outings and never actually caught anything. First, the adjustable handle got stuck in the shortest position. Not even the help of a wrench could loosen it. Then, the metal ring refused to stay locked in place. Finally, the metal part holding the ring to the handle simply snapped. Not from rough use, or even gentle use! I would not recommend this net to anyone at all. We once had bamboo nets from the dollar store that lasted an entire summer and held up to much more abuse than this net!

I love how portable this net is; it folds up to fit quite nicely in a bag or backpack. However, the net is a tad bit long and tends to squash larger butterflies if you catch them with it, so I tied the mesh together about 1/3 of the way up to create a larger pocket for them. Fairly good quality as long as you're not super rough with it, great value for the price!Best Deals for American Educational Nylon Insect Net with 14" Ring
The handle and the net are suppose to be screw together. The net had male threads and the handle had female. The problem is that they weren't the same threads. The two of them simply would not assemble together. I got a refund for the product.Honest reviews on American Educational Nylon Insect Net with 14" Ring
I was searching for two butterfly nets that I could reduce the size so I can put them in my luggage to bring in vacation. They did the job, but broke really fast. More like a kid's toy. Will not buy those again.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for American Educational Nylon Insect Net with 14" Ring
I purchased this last year to catch butterflies with my daughter. It works well for that the long net makes it easy to capture the butterfly in the net without letting it escape after being scooped in. You simply twist your wrist after capturing the butterfly, folding the net over the ring so that it is closed. It is not particularly rugged (none that I have seen so far are), so I would not recommend it for small children. If you're not slamming it into the ground and things (like a child will), it holds up just fine. For older children and adults, it works great.
