We got this kit for our nice for her birthday. The packaging says its for 8+, but I think kids as young as 6 could get a lot of enjoyment out of it (with some help from mom and dad).

The bits and packaging don't do the product justice as they're so minimalist (which is very cool looking). The real value is all the crafting that can be done with the bits. the kit it self has some nice examples, but if you go to their website, you'll see hundreds more examples submitted by kids.

My Nice and her brother had created a super bubble blower (made bubbles as big as her torso) and a doorbell which got much mandated use if we wanted to enter the kitchen thereafter.

I now have easy gifts in which to help spoil my niece and nephew as their now favorite uncle is sure to supply them with the occasional bit from here on out, helping to keep my two burgeoning engineers well stocked.

The price point is high, for sure, but after you see the depth of actives available, it works itself out. Very comparable to Legos in this respect, and we all know those arn't cheap!

These kits are fabulous. The Premium Kit is well worth the extra over the Basic. We made the bubble blower first and the kids had a great time experimenting with all the different devices for turning the fan on and off. There are endless possibilities for creating and crafting. The instructions in the box are a fun start, but the kids really take off and make some really amazing things on their own from there. Make sure to check out the website for more project ideas.

My 6 year old was able to figure out which bits to put together and completely understood the concept. He needed some help with some of the crafting (cutting the hole out of the plastic cup for example) of course. Our 4 year old could even put together a circuit on her own.

Only 4 stars since the price is high.

We wrote the following regarding the Little Bits Base Kit: Whether or not your child likes science, they'll probably enjoy this toy. The various parts snap together easily and intuitively in countless combinations, bringing instant gratification and accomplishment. Dig, or rather snap, further, and the combinations begin to reveal the nature of energy, process, system, and cause and effect. Those more crafty out there can easily combine their combinations with boxes and whatnot to create inventions of their own. Really, a brilliant contemporary to the wire and spring electronics kits from our childhood.

The Premium Kit builds upon the Base Kit principles and components with unique circuits and additional copies of previous circuits. Both kits easily stand alone in exploration and challenge but naturally work together for larger projects. We've only scratched the surface of possibility.

I can't see this being an all-day, full-time use toy, but I do see it as being one a child will return to often. Additionally, the longevity in age range has huge potential. This isn't a toy one would quickly leave with age.

All in all, if the bill doesn't scare you away, these are really fantastic. In a different light, repeated purchases of lesser expensive toys over the life of a toy like this will probably end up emptying your pockets more.

When I got my LittleBits Kit two friends were visiting, we were all curious about our new toys, we started by looking online for project ideas, they have a whole bunch at littlebits.cc. We ended up building different projects for 4 hours. We came up with tons of ideas, you can even mix these project with your Lego sets, adding a real motion activated LED light to your house build with LEGO bricks, AWESOMENESS. Pricey yeah but I love it, totally worth it. Gave it only 4 stars in durability because we broke the plastic screw driver on the first day.
